Few programs can lose four starters from a record-setting 34-win team – including NBA Draft selections Dion Waiters (sixth), Fab Melo (22nd) and Kris Joseph (51st), as well as senior Scoop Jardine – and boast a deep and talented roster that can repeat (at least) its Elite Eight run from 2011-12. Syracuse is one of those programs. Now in his 37th season and poised to reach the 900-victory milestone during the Chevrolet Gotham Classic, head coach Jim Boeheim welcomes back a pair of talented seniors in guard Brandon Triche and forward James Southerland as well as a bevy of players who are ready to lead the Orange to their fifth consecutive season with at least 27 victories. Proficient at either backcourt position, Triche (9.4 ppg) has started every game of his career and finished second on the team with 42 three-point field goals a year ago. Michael CarterWilliams (2.7 ppg) displayed great potential last season and the former McDonald’s All-American is poised for a breakout sophomore campaign. Trevor Cooney, a 6-4 sophomore, is a dangerous long-range shooter who took a redshirt in 2011-12 and will be a valuable asset off the bench. Southerland (6.8 ppg) is a matchup nightmare for opponents at 6-8 and amassed 37 field goals from beyond the arc and 34 blocked shots last season. Look for Southerland and junior forward C.J. Fair (8.5 ppg) to be more aggressive on the offensive end in 2012-13. Fair finished second on the team in rebounding (5.4 rpg) and added 40 steals while making nine starts a year ago. Junior center Baye Moussa Keita (2.3 ppg) ranked second on the team with 35 blocked shots in 2011-12 while shooting a blistering 71.1 percent (32-of-45) over 35 games. Forward Rakeem Christmas (2.8 ppg) made 35 starts as a freshman last season and averaged 5.3 rebounds in four NCAA Tournament contests. The Syracuse frontcourt will be further bolstered by the addition of freshman forwards Jerami Grant and DaJuan Coleman. The 6-8 Grant starred at DeMatha Catholic (Md.) and his long wingspan should be an ideal fit for Boeheim’s zone defense. The 6-9 Coleman earned McDonald’s All-America distinction after playing at nearby Jamesville-DeWitt High School and should be a significant addition on the glass and in the low post.

NBA RAID: Syracuse had three players taken in the 2012 NBA Draft for the third time in program history and first time since 1986. Dion Waiters entered his name in the draft following his sophomore campaign and was selected sixth overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Center Fab Melo, who also played two seasons, was taken 22nd overall by the Boston Celtics. The Celtics went Orange again in the second round, selecting forward Kris Joseph with the 51st overall pick. STRONG BLOODLINES: Freshman Jerami Grant is blessed with strong basketball bloodlines. His father, Harvey Grant, was an NBA performer and his uncle, Horace Grant, won NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. Jerami’s brother, Jerian, is a junior on the Notre Dame squad. Another older brother, Jerai, played at Clemson. MODEL OF CONSISTENCY: Syracuse has posted 42 consecutive winning seasons, the longest active streak among Division I programs. Under Jim Boeheim, the Orange have amassed at least 20 victories in each of the last 15 seasons. Syracuse is coming off a programbest 34-3 campaign in which it held the No. 1 ranking in the national polls for six weeks, the longest period ever in program annals.

Success. That is what Temple’s eight returning letterwinners have enjoyed since their arrival on campus. The Owls have won 101 games over the past four seasons, and are one of 13 schools that have earned berths in each of the past five NCAA Tournaments. Despite the loss of their starting senior backcourt of Juan Fernandez and Ramone Moore, as well as the inside presence of graduate student center Micheal Eric, there is no reason to think that the 2012-13 Owls squad will experience anything else as they embark on their final season in the Atlantic 10 before moving on to the Big East in 2013-14. Senior Khalif Wyatt is the A-10’s leading returning scorer (17.1 ppg) and averaged 3.3 assists and 2.2 steals a year ago. The 6-4 guard ranked third on the team in three-point field goals made (53) and amassed 12 performances with 20 or more points. Seventh-year head coach Fran Dunphy has no shortage of options in the backcourt to help fill the void with the departures of Fernandez and Moore. Will Cummings (1.4 ppg) appeared in 21 games a year ago and the point guard is poised for a breakout sophomore season. T.J. DiLeo (2.9 ppg), a 6-3 graduate student, has improved steadily and is a lockdown perimeter defender with tremendous court awareness. Dalton Pepper played two seasons at West Virginia and averaged 3.5 points and 10.1 minutes over 62 games. The Owls’ frontcourt returns a trio of experienced players in seniors Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson and Scootie Randall and sophomore Anthony Lee. Hollis-Jefferson (9.3 ppg) is team’s top returning rebounder (6.6 rpg) and entered his final season ranked 11th in program annals in field goal percentage (52.2 percent). After sitting out the 2011-12 season due to a knee injury, the 6-6 Randall is healthy and gives the Owls another lockdown defender and a threat from long range. Randall (10.7 ppg) averaged 4.7 rebounds in 2010-11 with 45 three-point field goals en route to being named the league’s Most Improved Player. Lee (5.0 ppg) started 17 games as a freshman last season and averaged 5.2 rebounds and compiled 38 blocked shots while displaying tremendous potential.

A summer transfer from Boston University, 6-9 Jake O’Brien scored 1,020 points and grabbed 444 rebounds in his three seasons with the Terriers. He averaged double figures in scoring each season and sat out the 2011-12 campaign due to a foot injury. The Owls could boast Dunphy’s deepest roster since arriving on Broad Street after adding a trio of talented freshmen in guard Quenton DeCosey and forwards Daniel Dingle and Devontae Watson. LEADING THE WAY: After seeing limited minutes as a freshman, Temple guard Khalif Wyatt has flourished over the past two seasons and is poised to be one of the top senior guards in the nation. Wyatt entered 2012-13 with 114 steals and ranks sixth in program history with a three-point shooting percentage of 39.1 (101-of-258). WINNING WAYS: Temple is one of just 13 programs nationally to advance to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last five seasons and entered the 2012-13 season trailing only Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, and Syracuse in alltime victories. FRIENDLY CONFINES: Temple will play a program-record 17 games at the Liacouras Center in 2012-13. The Owls entered the season having won 36 of their last 38 games at their on-campus venue.

Despite the loss of two starters from last year’s 22-win team that captured the Horizon League crown and the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 1999, optimism is high around the Detroit program with the return of dynamic guard Ray McCallum. The 6-3 junior earned first-team all-conference and Horizon League Tournament MVP honors after averaging 15.4 points and 4.0 assists a year ago. The junior, who is the son of head coach Ray McCallum, led the Titans in steals (57) and 20-point performances (10) and knocked down 30 field goals from beyond the arc in 2011-12. Joining McCallum in the backcourt is junior Jason Calliste (10.2 ppg), a starter in 34 contests last season. Calliste led the team in three-point field goals (56), registered 40 steals, and scored in double figures in 15 of the team’s final 20 games a year ago. Guard P.J. Boutte (0.8 ppg) appeared in 34 games as a freshman in 2011-12 and gained valuable experience while averaging 7.6 minutes per game. Detroit turns to a pair of seniors to anchor its frontcourt in 2012-13 with the return of Doug Anderson (9.2 ppg) and Nick Minnerath (12.0 ppg). The 6-6 Anderson averaged 4.6 rebounds and shot 52.2 percent (119-of-228) from the field while making 31 starts. Minnerath, a 6-9 forward, averaged 11.2 points and 4.8 rebounds in 2010-11 but appeared in only five games last season before sustaining a season-ending injury. Junior Evan Bruinsma (4.1 ppg), who will provide depth in the frontcourt, grabbed 2.5 rebounds per game last season while seeing action in all 36 games. Fifth-year head coach Ray McCallum is counting on a group of talented newcomers that consists of three freshmen and three transfers to provide an immediate boost in 2012-13. Versatile forward Juwan Howard, Jr. averaged 9.3 points and 4.0 rebounds at Western Michigan as a freshman in 2010-11 and is expected to earn a starting position in the Titans’ frontcourt. Junior college transfers Ugochukwu Njoku and Olumide Solanke stand 6-10 and 6-11, respectively, and will provide size and experience off the bench. Guards Gabriel Dos Santos and Anton Wilson will see significant minutes, while 6-4 Tome Ivezaj rounds out the talented freshman class.

With the ball in McCallum’s hands and the combination of sharpshooters and experienced forwards returning to the fold, Detroit is poised to defend its Horizon League title and return to the NCAA Tournament. HIGH PERCENTAGE PLAYS: Forward Doug Anderson led Detroit and ranked ninth in the Horizon League in field goal percentage (52.2 percent) in 2011-12. The 6-6 senior recorded a dunk on 58 of his 119 field goals made and attempted just 18 shots from beyond the arc. BIG PLAY RAY: Junior guard Ray McCallum became the program’s first student-athlete to earn first-team All-Horizon League honors since 2003 after averaging 15.4 points in 2011-12. McCallum scored 20 or more points on 10 different occasions last season and entered the 2012-13 campaign with 304 assists and 111 steals in 69 career games. He was selected as the Horizon League’s Preseason Player of the Year and was among 50 players named to the 2012-13 John R. Wooden Award Watch List.

Chevrolet Gotham Classic Looks To Make Its Mark The newest early season event on the college basketball schedule is the Chevrolet Gotham Classic. And the inaugural field ensures the event will be a memorable one. The Challenge Round pits two of the most storied programs in college basketball history. Nationally-ranked Syracuse and Temple are ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, among the nation’s winningest programs. In addition, the two coaches – Jim Boeheim and Fran Dunphy – have combined for over 1,300 wins between them. The two schools will do battle on Dec. 22 at The World’s Most Famous Arena. If you haven’t been to Madison Square Garden in the past two years, you owe it to yourself to do so as the Garden has been transformed into one of the most modern and state-of-the art facilities in the world after the second phase of a three-phase, threeyear, $1 billion renovation. ESPN2 will be on hand to air this event. The Orange and Owls will host three games at home as part of the Chevrolet Gotham Classic. Each will entertain Detroit, Canisius, and Alcorn State. Those three teams will also host a game of their own, with Alcorn State entertaining Detroit on Dec. 19, Canisius hosting Alcorn State on Dec. 27, and Detroit home against Canisius on Dec. 30. The Chevrolet Gotham Classic promises to make its mark on the college basketball landscape.

Tournament Preview DETROIT The Titans went 22-14 and won the Horizon League championship last season. Detroit is coming off its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 1999. Head coach Ray McCallum’s squad is led by his dynamic backcourt of junior Ray McCallum, who led the Titans in scoring (21.2 ppg) and assists (3.7) through November, and senior Jason Calliste, who netted 11.0 ppg through the same time period. Senior Doug Anderson posted 12.8 points and a teamhigh 7.2 rebounds a game heading into December.

SYRACUSE The Orange are coming off their eighth NCAA Elite 8 appearance in 2011-12 and their 35th NCAA Tournament appearance. Under Hall of Fame head coach Jim Boeheim, Syracuse has gone to the postseason 35 times in 36 years. Last year the Orange won a school record 34 games and earned the Big East regular season championship. Two starters return from that team. Senior guard Brandon Triche netted 15.6 ppg heading into December while junior forward C.J. Fair added 11.6 ppg. Senior James Southerland was the Orange’s leading scorer in November with an average of 19.2 ppg.

With 390 career wins and eight 20-win seasons on his coaching resume, Jim Baron assumes the reins at Canisius. The senior backcourt of Harold Washington (17.2 ppg in November) and Alshwan Hymes (6.8 ppg) highlights a team which returns four starters and five of its top six scorers from a year ago. In fact, the Golden Griffins return nearly 80 percent of last year’s offense. Four transfers, led by Baron’s son, Billy (team-best 17.8 ppg, 6.0 apg in November), add to an already deep team.

ALCORN STATE Second-year head coach Luther Riley continues to rebuild the Braves’ program. Last year Alcorn State registered a six-win improvement from the previous season as the Braves posted 10 victories. This year’s team is paced by a trio of guards – senior Anthony Nieves (10.3 ppg through November), junior Anthony Evans (team-high 13.1 ppg), and sophomore newcomer LeAntwan Luckett (13.0 ppg), who is one of six newcomers on the team.

TEMPLE Temple earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the 30th time in 2011-12, compiling a 24-8 record and winning the Atlantic 10 regular season championship. In his six previous seasons at Temple, head coach Fran Dunphy has taken the Owls to the NCAA Tournament five times. The Owls return two starters from last year’s squad, led by senior guard Khalif Wyatt, who tallied 15.6 ppg and a team-best 5.0 apg through November. Senior forward Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson put up November averages of 9.0 points and 5.6 rebounds a game. Senior Scottie Randle, who sat out last year, led the Owls in scoring (15.8) and rebounding (7.2) heading into December.

Overview The inaugural Chevrolet Gotham Classic features two of the winningest programs in college basketball history, a team that went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time this century, and two teams looking to get back to their winning ways. There are plenty of story lines in this event. Let’s start with Syracuse, which has won more games than all but four programs in the history of college basketball. Its coach, Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim, looks to win his 900th game during the Chevrolet Gotham Classic, achieving a milestone only two other coaches have reached at the Division I level (Krzyzewski & Knight). Boeheim, who led the Orange to a perfect record entering December despite losing four players from last year’s 34-3 team, began at Syracuse as an undergraduate 50 years ago and will guide the Orange into the Atlantic Coast Conference next season. Then you have Temple, which ranks right behind Syracuse on that all-time wins list. The Owls will join the Big East Conference next year after returning for football in 2012. Their coach, Fran Dunphy, has won over 400 games and has returned Temple to its lofty perch in the college basketball world. Like Syracuse, Temple entered December with an unblemished record, despite the graduation of three starters. Alcorn State is under the direction of second year coach Luther Riley. After winning 10 games last year, Riley has brought in six new players to help return the SWAC championship trophy to Alcorn for the first time since 2002. Canisius is now headed by veteran head coach Jim Baron, who inherits a talented team that underachieved last season. As a matter of fact, the Golden Griffins entered December one win shy of matching their total of all of last season. Detroit rounds out the field and looks to return to the NCAA Tournament fresh off a Horizon League championship in 2011-12. Head coach Ray McCallum will rely on his son, Ray, who is one of 50 players on the preseason Wooden Award Watch List.

The arrival of a new head coach with a reputation for resuscitating programs through hard work and discipline, along with the addition of four talented transfers – including the coach’s son – should have Canisius back in contention for a MAAC title and erase the memory of last season’s five-win campaign. Jim Baron was named the program’s new head coach on April 2, bringing with him 390 wins and 11 postseason appearances in a 25-year career that has seen him lead programs at St. Francis (Pa.), St. Bonaventure, and Rhode Island. Baron was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year four times and guided URI to six 20-win seasons over the last 11 years. The Griffs welcome back three starters and six letterwinners from a year ago, including senior guard Harold Washington (17.0 ppg). Washington ranked fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in scoring and scored in double figures in 26 of the team’s 30 games in 2011-12. Classmate Alshwan Hymes (15.4 ppg) has unlimited shooting range and enters the season ranked third in program history with 175 career three-point field goals. The frontcourt returns a pair of experienced forwards who have displayed a knack for rebounding in junior Chris Manhertz (7.0 ppg) and sophomore Josiah Heath (4.5 ppg).

The rugged 6-6 Manhertz ranked fifth in the MAAC in rebounding (7.4 rpg) while starting all 30 games. He also led the Griffs with four double-double performances. Heath made 19 starts as a freshman in 2011-12, averaged 6.0 rebounds and registered at least three blocked shots on three different occasions. Baron will benefit from the services of four transfers this season, one of which is his son Billy, who received a clearance waiver from the NCAA that allows him to play immediately after he transferred to Canisius in July. Billy averaged 13.0 points (which included five performances of at least 20 points) and 4.4 rebounds per game as a sophomore last season at Rhode Island. Senior guard Isaac Sosa was a three-year letterwinner at Central Florida and averaged 8.8 points a game over 96 career games. He also had 190 field goals from beyond the arc before heading to Canisius. Freddy Asprilla, a 6-10 senior, averaged 4.9 points and 4.9 rebounds in 2010-11 at Kansas State. Junior center Jordan Heath, the older brother of Josiah, averaged 14.2 points and 7.2 rebounds in 2010-11 at nearby NAIA program Roberts Wesleyan and led the team to the NCAA Final Four. HIT THE GROUND RUNNING: Guard Harold Washington led Canisius in scoring with an average of 17.0 points per game and scored 20 or more points 10 times, the most by a Griff since the 1995-96 campaign. The former junior college transfer closed out his first season with the program in 2011-12 as the first studentathlete since 1977-78 to score more than 500 points in his first year as a member of the Blue & Gold. BOMBS AWAY: Senior guard Alshwan Hymes established a program record with 84 field goals from beyond the arc last season while leading the MAAC in three-point field goals per game (2.8 pg.). Hymes entered the 2012-13 campaign just 25 threepointers shy of becoming the second player in program annals to knocked down 200 career three-point field goals. FAMILY AFFAIR: Junior guard Billy Baron is the son of first-year head coach Jim Baron, while the Canisius frontcourt consists of brothers Jordan and Josiah Heath. All three players are expected to be major contributors in 2012-13.

Now in his second year at Alcorn State, head coach Luther Riley relies on a deep and experienced roster that enjoyed a six-win improvement in 2011-12. With a challenging non-conference slate, the Braves will be tested as they embark on Southwestern Athletic Conference competition after the New Year in hopes of achieving their goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament. The backcourt is the strength of the team in 2012-13 and leading the way is senior guard Anthony Nieves (10.7 ppg). Nieves led the Braves in scoring in four of the 14 games he played in last season while adding 15 steals. Martrevious Sanders, a 5-11 senior, averaged 4.3 points a year ago and is an adept distributor of the ball who provides valuable experience running the Braves’ offense. After sitting out last season, sophomore guard LeAntwan Luckett should make an immediate impact and could be the team’s most talented player after being ranked among the nation’s top 50 high school seniors by both ESPN and Rivals in 2010-11. Junior Anthony Evans is the Braves’ top perimeter defender and an adept three-point shooter who could see his role in the offense expand. Anchoring the frontcourt are seniors Ian Francis and Michael Starks. The 6-8 Francis (6.4 ppg) started 20 games last season and averaged 5.4 rebounds while shooting 50 percent (72-of-144) from the field. Starks (3.9 ppg), a rugged 230-lb forward, led the team in blocked shots (34) a year ago while hauling down an average of 3.8 rebounds per game. Josh Nicholas, a 7-0 junior who played at Wallace State (Ala.) Community College in 2011-12, and 6-10 junior Stephane Raquil from Southern Shreveport (La.) Community College will both push for significant minutes in the low post.

Riley also welcomes a large and talented rookie class with the arrivals of six freshmen to the Alcorn State campus: guards Devonte Hampton, Tyrel Hunt, Terrance Birdie, Larry Johnson, and Clint Nwosuh, and forward Jamaal Hester. Each is expected to make an impact and improve the depth and athleticism of the roster.

Luther Riley Head Coach second season 10-20 overall (one year)

YOUNG & OLD: Alcorn State’s 2012-13 roster has an intriguing blend of youth and experience. Second-year head coach Luther Riley welcomes back six seniors, including guard Anthony Nieves, who averaged 10.7 ppg a year ago. The Braves’ roster also features six freshmen who the staff believes will push for immediate playing time and give the program a very bright future. MAKING HIS MARK: In his first season at Alcorn State in 2011-12, Riley led the Braves to a six-win improvement primarily due to an improved defensive effort. Alcorn State limited its opponents to just 32.7 percent (171-of-523) shooting from three-point range and held 12 of its opponents to 60 points or less, including Texas A&M and Nebraska. NO EASY ROAD: The Braves will be challenged by a non-conference slate that includes just four home games prior to their league opener on Jan. 2. Alcorn State will enjoy the comforts of home in January, however, with five games at the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex. The Braves posted a 7-5 home mark in 2011-12.

And A New Era Dawns... Last year work commenced on the three-year, historic Transformation of Madison Square Garden. The comprehensive, top-to-bottom Transformation will provide a significantly enhanced experience for customers, athletes, entertainers, suite holders, and marketing partners, from the first row to the last. The project involves over 2.6 million man hours of union labor, the equivalent of at least 1,300 full-time jobs, creating as many as 3,700 union construction jobs. It will also restore The Garden’s iconic ceiling and pay homage to the building’s storied history. Below is a look at the threephase Transformation of Madison Square Garden:

Mark Messier, Cup in hand, wiping out 54 years of frustration…Sinatra in The Main Event...Ali and Frazier in The Fight...The Dunk...Patrick Ewing slam-dunking the Knicks into the Finals...LJ’s four-pointer…The Stones and The Dead and The King and The Pope... It could all only happen in one place...Not a mere building but a state of mind...The greatest of the great in sports, arts and entertainment, summed up in three words...Madison Square Garden...The World’s Most Famous Arena... Beginnings The current Garden - located between 31st and 33rd Streets and Seventh and Eighth Avenues on Manhattan’s West Side - is the fourth building (third site) to be named Madison Square Garden. Garden I was located at Madison Square: 26th Street and Madison Avenue. It was originally opened in 1874 (at a cost of $35,000) by the legendary P.T. Barnum as “Barnum’s Monster Classical and Geological Hippodrome.” However, it was soon renamed “Gilmore’s Garden” when the lease was auctioned off to bandmaster Patrick S. Gilmore (the term “Garden” was used often during this period to denote a place of public gathering and entertainment). The building, which had 28-foot walls without a roof, hosted a varied schedule of social and fraternal meetings, flower shows, and commercial exhibitions. When Gilmore’s lease expired in 1878, it was picked up briefly by W. M. Tileson. The following year, William Vanderbilt of the New York Central Railroad assumed control of the facility and officially renamed it “Madison Square Garden” on May 31, 1879. Featuring a

sports and entertainment program that stressed such events as boxing and the National Horse Show, Garden I stood until its demolition in 1889. Garden II was constructed on the site of Garden I, opening on June 16, 1890, at a cost of $1.5 million. It contained an 8,000-seat main arena, 1,500-seat concert hall, 1,200-seat theatre, and the world’s largest indoor swimming pool. The Spanish Renaissance-style structure was topped by its most famous feature: a 32-story tower and roof garden atop which stood Augustus Saint-Gauden’s gold statue of Diana, Goddess of the Hunt. Stanford White, the renowned architect who designed Garden II, also figured in its most famous - and infamous - event. On the night of Jun. 25, 1906, White was gunned down in the Garden’s rooftop garden by Pittsburgh millionaire Harry Thaw, allegedly in revenge for White’s long-standing affair with Thaw’s wife, showgirl Evelyn Nesbit. The White-Thaw-Nesbit love triangle was ultimately immortalized in the 1955 film The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing - starring Ray Milland as White and Joan Collins as Nesbit - and in the recent best-seller American Eve by Paula Uruburu (Riverhead Books, 2008). Nesbit died in obscurity in California at age 81 in 1967. Garden II hosted a sporting card heavy with boxing, wrestling, six-day bicycle races, and horse shows, along with national events such as the 1924 Democratic National Convention, a marathon that lasted through 16 days and 103 ballots. Movie buffs will recall that in Orson Welles’ 1941 classic Citizen Kane, Charles Foster Kane’s acceptance of the 1916 New York gubernatorial nomination takes place at Garden II (although, obviously, it wasn’t actually filmed there). Madison Square Garden Garden II closed with a boxing card on May 5, 1925, followed by a mournful eulogy by ring announcer Joe Humphreys: “Farewell to thee, o temple of fistiana. Farewell to thee, o sweet Miss Diana...” The New York Life Insurance Building (51 Madison Avenue) occupies the former site of Gardens I and II, while Diana found a new home at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Garden III - the “Old Garden” - was built in just 249 days at 49th Street and Eighth Avenue under the watchful eyes of promoter Tex Rickard and architect Thomas Lamb. The fabled 18,000seat arena, built at a cost of $5.6 million, opened with a six-day bicycle race on Nov. 24, 1925, and for 43 years was America’s premier sports and entertainment showplace. Ironically, Rickard did not live to see the blossoming of Garden III, suffering a fatal appendicitis attack on Jan. 6, 1929.

Garden III - “Old Garden” Anyone who ever set foot in the Old Garden remembers its unforgettable atmosphere...the sky-high balcony...the haze from decades of cigarette smoke...the main lobby, a schmoozer’s paradise...the marquee...G.O. Cards...the organ (played first by Gladys Goodding, later by Virginia Thomas)...the unmistakable voice of John Condon...the Nedick’s and Adam Hats stores that flanked the main entrance... Sports - especially hockey, basketball, boxing and track - would be the lifeblood of the Old Garden. But it also hosted entertainment extravaganzas ranging from the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and the Gene Autry Rodeo to star-studded spectacles like Mike Todd’s 1957 anniversary party for his film Around the World in 80 Days and President John F. Kennedy’s May 19, 1962 birthday party, which featured Marilyn Monroe’s breathless version of “Happy Birthday.” On the screen, the Garden provided the inspiration, and title, for the 1932 Paramount epic Madison Square Garden, starring Jack Oakie and ZaSu Pitts, as well as the on-location backdrop for the harrowing final reel of John Frankenheimer’s 1962 classic, The Manchurian Candidate.

The last event ever was the Westminster Dog Show, over Feb. 12-13, 1968. After the Old Garden was demolished, the site was used for years as a Kinney parking lot. The Worldwide Plaza office/ apartment complex, which opened in 1989, now occupies the site. On Nov. 3, 1960, Garden president Irving Mitchell Felt announced plans for a new Madison Square Garden - Garden IV - to eventually be built at 33rd Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, atop Pennsylvania Station. Prospective sites for a New Garden had been discussed throughout the mid- and late-‘50s, especially the area at Columbus Circle which would eventually house the New York Coliseum and, ultimately, the Time Warner Center. Then the Garden Corporation obtained the coveted “air rights” above Penn Station from the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1961. The Railroad had entertained the idea of selling Penn Station’s air rights as far back as 1951, when faced with a $72 million deficit. In 1955, Railroad president James Symes and famed real estate developer William Zeckendorf signed an agreement to option the Station’s air rights for an industrial-commercial “Palace of Progress,” with a new, renovated Penn Station below street level. When the project fell through, the Railroad sold the air rights to the Garden Corporation. Above-ground demolition of Penn Station began on Oct. 28, 1963, with new concrete poured starting on May 1, 1964. Garden IV opened as a glittering sports and entertainment showplace, with its distinctive circular, cable-suspended roof above the 19,000-seat arena, its 5,000-seat Felt Forum, 48-lane Bowling Center, 500-seat cinema, Hall of Fame Club, National Art Museum of Sport, 50,000-square foot Exposition Rotunda, and 29-story office building (Two Penn Plaza) attached by a pedestrian mall. The first element of the New Garden complex to open its doors was the Bowling Center, on Oct. 30, 1967. On Nov. 26, 1967, the Felt Forum opened with a performance of the Welsh and Scots Guards. The “New Garden” itself officially opened on Feb. 11, 1968, when Bob Hope and Bing Crosby hosted “The Night of the Century,” a starstudded salute to the USO.

The College Basketball Invitational (CBI) is a postseason tournament event comprised of a 16-team field and hosted at on-campus arenas throughout the country. The CBI is a single-elimination tournament, up until the Championship Series. The Championship Series is a best-of-three series. The CBI provides a meaningful opportunity for teams that are deserving of a postseason experience.

The All-American Championship features the nation’s top high school boys basketball seniors and juniors, providing avid fans of college basketball the chance to see the next generation of All-Americans in person. Annually held at the site of the Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, the 2013 All-American Championship will take place in Atlanta on April 7. Participants are selected by a national panel of high school basketball experts and teams are divided by region - North, South, East, and West.
