Climate Week North East A full week of fun, inspiring and interesting events, running between 15th- 24th March 2019, designed to raise awareness of climate change but, more importantly, show what we can all do to make a difference and reduce our carbon footprint in a fun way. The events provide knowledge and inspiration for everyone to take small (and big) steps in the fight against climate changestarting with the free Green Family Fun Day in Hazlehead Park on Saturday 16th March and culminating with Earth Day at Aberdeen Science Centre on Sunday 24th March. From tours of community renewable projects, cooking demonstrations to guided ranger walks and bike rides, films, plays, and talks,Climate Week North East is designed to showcase the inspiring action happening here in the North East and demonstrate what each of us can do to help.

We want to showcase the wonderful projects going on in your community, be it a zero waste café, school growing project, reuse and upcycling initiative or any other carbon reducing, living sustainably project. We want to enable you to tell your story and inspire others to make a difference in their life.

As Alison Stuart, Director of Aberdeen Climate Action, says: “There are so many amazing sustainability projects going on here in the north east and it is community action driving them. Climate Week is a fantastic opportunity to showcase those projects, gain recognition for the wonderful work they do and inspire others to create their own projects, help in the existing ones or simply make a change in the way they live their lives. All of us can do something to help reduce climate change. It is easy to take small steps that all build into making a big difference (and save us money). These steps can be as small as changing your home power supply to renewable, growing your own veg and eating less meat, reusing and recycling, using your car less and getting a hybrid or electric car to starting up your own community project or company with the reduction of carbon emissions as an outcome. There are lots we all can do. ”

My lovely mother is going to be celebrating a milestone birthday this month. Quite exciting as we - the ladies of the family - are going in to see Calendar Girls the Musical - super excited! We’ve taken the opportunity to book a table at Poldinos for a lovely pre-theatre meal and maybe pop a bottle of fizz - it would only be right!

What about giving our competition a try [see centre pages] there are three pairs of tickets up for grabs to see A Midsummer Night’s Dream - now that does look good - fab poster.

Having celebrated her tenth year in business last summer Elaine at Junction Arts has made a very difficult decision to close the shop and take a different path. I have been very lucky to have Elaine market Junction through the gazette for all those years - very sad to see her go, but we do wish her well in her new venture. Do pop along and support her until the end of March though!

There are a few new businesses dipping their toe in the water - how about trying some singing lessons, a new diet, tutoring, a new hair cut or a fab facial.

Have you heard of them?

The Golden Games is a festival of FREE sport and activity for older adults held in Aberdeen every June. The Games started in 2011 with 5 activities and 80 participants and in 2018 it had 89 activities held over 10 days with 425 participants!

Some of the activities on offer during the 2018 games included pickleball, tennis, a number of health walks, introduction to the gym, shooting and there was even a dance flashmob!

Regardless of your age or fitness level, there is something for you at the Games. Even our Care Homes get involved in the Care Home Pentathlon.

Meet Sylvia, she is one of the Golden Games Ambassadors.

Sylvia Wood (70) was medically retired at 65 years and following recovery from an operation, she heard about a health walk running as part of the Golden Games and decided to go.

She very much enjoyed the walk and heard that regular health walks were to start in the Bridge of Don area where she lives, so she decided to go to these.

The following year, Sylvia decided to try a few more activities which were held at the Sports Village and she enjoyed these so much she decided to take out an “Evergreens” membership which is a membership for sports and activities held in the Sports Village for older adults. She attended the Evergreens exercise class and the Zumba class, both of which were busy classes (of up to 100!) and had a range of older people with all different abilities.

One thing leads to another and Sylvia now also has a membership with Sport Aberdeen which allows her to join in the activities she enjoys in any of the City’s Sport Aberdeen venues.

Sylvia’s week comprises of various aqua classes across the city, a weekly health walk and a steady steps class at Westburn Outdoor Centre.

The Golden Games was the catalyst for this change in Sylvia’s lifestyle and Sylvia is a real inspiration to many others. Sylvia suffers from lymphedema following treatment for cancer in 2006 and finds the exercise she does helps her to retain her strength, flexibility and gives her energy. Importantly though, Sylvia talks about the social benefits she gets from her active lifestyle. The groups she attends gives her contact with people she wouldn’t otherwise have.

They have social outings, have built friendships and are very supportive of each other.

Sylvia became a Golden Games Ambassador and along with others, helps to encourage people to give the Games a try. Sylvia and the other Ambassadors are around during the games to greet people and ensure people feel welcome.

Sylvia won the “Pearl Mitchell Trophy” at the 2017 Golden Games. This is an award given to a person during the games who is seen to be an inspiration to others and is voted for by the participants of the games. So not only has Sylvia been brave enough to take steps to battle her way back to health, she also inspires others to do the same.

The Ambassadors will do everything they can to help you and ITS FREE! Aberdonians love a freebie! There are things on offer you could tick off your bucket list. It’s so much fun and we all need fun in our lives.

The 2019 Golden Games are running from 5th- 14th June. Bookings are made via the box office who will have an online brochure listing activities, times and venues.

The brochures will also be available in libraries, sports venues, GP Practices, Community Centres and other locations across the city in the run up to the Games.

Be SMART in 2019 Most resolutions fail because they are too vague. Make your 2019 resoultions SMART. Specific - Rather than, ‘I will lose weight,’ say, ‘I will lose 7lbs by the end of January by cutting out deserts, and walking a mile a day.’

Measurable - What does your success look like?

Is it a 15lb weight-loss by the end of March? Is it fitting into a size 12 dresss? An effective goal is easy to visualise.

Attainable - By all means be ambitious; aiming to save £2500 during 2019 for your dream holiday in 2020 is fine, but make sure you can break down the goal into attainable steps which can be achieved in a shorter time frame.

Can you save £200 per month from your current income? If not can you pick up some bar work or sell some possessions on eBay. Maybe you could save £100 per month over two years and take your dream holiday in 2021. Now your target is attainable.

Realistic - If your goal is to win X Factor but you couldn’t hold a tune in a bucket it’s time for a reality check. If you are 100lbs over your ideal weight, you are never going to be a size ten for your beach holiday in July. But realistic doesn’t just mean ‘able to atttain’, it means ‘willing to attain.’ If you want to retrain as a nurse, will you put in the hours of study and take a pay cut while you’re doing that?

Time-limited - Set a goal. Research shows that three months is good as it’s short enough to see the end-point, and long enough for significant change. Whether it’s passing your driving test, or shedding a stone or two before your wedding day; three months is a good timeframe.

5-HTP Supplements and Mental Health 5-HTP has become a more popular supplement lately. It’s made from tryptophan, which your body converts into serotonin. Get Active to Fight Parkinson’s Disease!

Exercise is medicine for people with Parkinson’s Disease. Recent evidence shows that treating people as soon as possible after diagnosis is very effective in improving quality of life, mobility and confidence. However it also has the potential to slow progression of the condition. This is something that, at present, no traditional medication can offer.

What is Parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson disease affects around 1 in 500 people in the UK with the average onset of the condition at 50 years old. It affects a part of the brain called the substania nigra.

Because of nerve cell loss this area it is not able to produce enough of the chemical dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for regulating movement in the body.

How might it affect me?

To begin with symptoms may be very mild.

This is a great time to start exercising. Over time, common physical symptoms include tremor, slow movements and stiff, inflexible muscles. This can affect many aspects of daily life and may lead to a shuffling walking pattern, flexed posture, reduced balance or reduced function in an arm or hand.

What can I do about it?

Get active as early as you can! See an exercise professional such as a neuro physiotherapist with experience of treating PD. You need to learn what type of exercise to do and develop good, sustainable habits.

You also need to ensure you are on an optimal dose of medication so make sure you see your Consultant, GP or PD Nurse

about this. Being on the right medication can help you get the most benefit out of your exercise sessions so this is really important.

Exercise - what is the evidence?

Research has proven that directed physical activity can improve walking ability, hand dexterity, balance, speed of movements and overall fitness levels. One study also found that a specific exercise programme not only reduced symptoms but also indicated that the progression of the disease had slowed down reducing levels of medication required over time. This study also noted that a sedentary lifestyle worsened those symptoms that effect Parkinson disease suffers which then lead to other symptoms such as depression and fatigue.

What is Neurological Physiotherapy or “Neuro Physio”?

Neuro Physio's are experts in treating clients with neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s, and have a clear understanding on how Parkinson’s affects people. Treatment is focused on the individual; to improve their capabilities and to maximise their functional abilities.

Hot on the heels of their acclaimed pantomime, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, at Aberdeen Arts Centre, Aberdeen based, Ten Feet Tall Theatre are back in production for their next show, the wonderful Shakespeare comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Again partnering with the Arts Centre, this production of, probably people’s favourite Shakespeare comedy, promises to again carry the company’s “Made in Aberdeen” stamp of quality.

Hair Today No, it’s not ‘Just a haircut!’

Have you ever marked a life event by changing your hairstyle? Did you regret it, or did you feel free? Many people, most of them women, use haircuts as a marker for change.

In films the main character often undergoes a makeover as a metaphor for the dramatic changes they undergo in the movie: Sandy in Grease, and Julia Roberts’ character in Pretty Woman are just two of them. Before the makeover things were bad; after the makeover things are good. Simples. Or is it? In real life hairdressers bear witness to this scenario frequently. We may not tell them directly, but often they will sense we’re on a mission to create a new improved version of ourselves; or a quick way to shed the past and move on.

But dramatic hairstyle changes while in the midst of a life crisis can prove ill-advised. Sometimes we’re not really after a new hairstyle, more a whole new life. And as satisfying as it is to leave a salon with a completely new look, we need to remember that our hair might look different, but our problems will remain the same. We will still feel just as bad about our husband running off with our best friend, we’ll just be doing it with shorter hair! During a divorce, a bereavement or a health crisis we will experience a maelstrom of emotions: and one-minute chopping all our hair off will feel like the best decision in the world, but the next minute, when we look in the mirror and see a total stranger staring back at us it might feel terrifying.

Yet hair is an important aspect of how we express who we are and how we would like to be seen.

Changing our hair is one of the easiest ways to send a signal to the world that we have changed.

It can be a great tool to help us shed an outgrown ‘self’. My friend shed her shoulder-length blonde hair for a pixie crop shortly after she gave birth to twins. She felt she needed freedom from her hair care routine, so she could spend more time with her babies. For her it was freeing to be able to wake, shower and be ready to go in minutes. I had my tousled waist-length hair cut to a chic bob when I started my first proper job in journalism.

I felt like I needed to create a bit of distance between ‘student me’ and ‘professional me’. Like the caterpillar shedding the chrysalis I was ready to be someone new and the har salon was my chrysalis of choice.

Tray-baked Chicken with Root Vegetables Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour Serves 4 Ingredients 1 small celeriac, peeled and cut into 2½ cm/1in chunks 1 small swede, peeled and cut into 2½ cm/1in chunks 2 large sweet potatoes, scrubbed and cut into 2½ cm/1in chunks 2 medium parsnips, scrubbed and quartered lengthways 2 large garlic cloves, thinly sliced olive oil ½ tsp cumin seeds a few sprigs of sage 8 chicken thighs or drumsticks (skin on) Method Preheat the oven to 200C / gas 6 / fan 180C. Put the chunks of celeriac, swede, sweet potato, parsnips and garlic in a large roasting tin. Sprinkle liberally with the olive oil and cumin, and season well with salt and pepper. Toss the vegetables together so they are lightly coated in oil. Put in the oven

towards the top and roast for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, lightly oil then season the chicken skins, and lay a couple of sage leaves over each thigh or drumstick.

Remove the roasting pan from the oven and turn the vegetables over. Lay the chicken pieces on top. Roast for 30- 35 minutes more, until the vegetables are tender, and the chicken skin is nice and crispy. Serve with creamy mash and lightly cooked Savoy cabbage.

In the run-up to Valentine’s Day someone always asks me what they should buy for the gardener in their life.

It’s a tricky question to answer. Many people think we must like cut flowers, but actually I’m not keen and most gardeners I know aren’t either. We have gardens full of the things after all, and we tend to prefer our plants living and breathing in their natural environment, rather than imported from abroad and wrapped in cellophane.

and breathability I can recommend a proper Gore-Tex pair...sheer luxury. Mine remain the favourite Valentine gift my husband ever bought me. He knows how to romance a woman!

A proper long-necked watering can, with a brass rose will also earn you Valentine brownie points. Bigger isn’t necessarily better though unless your Valentine boasts big biceps! Watering cans are heavy when full. I find 3-4 litres is about the right size.

A bunch of long-stemmed red roses will set you back at least £40 and they might last a few days. For a similar price you can buy the gardener in your life Felco secateurs (with Valentine red handles) and they’ll last forever. I know which I’d prefer.

I know would be delighted to receive one. The trug is a great gift but even better when filled with a few gardening goodies such as packets of seed, water retaining granules, plant food etc.

You could add some hand tools too, such as a trowel and a fork. Make sure they are stainless steel and have long handles for ease of use.

And insulated mug or a good flask will always warm the heart of your Valentine because hot drinks don’t remain hot for long outside, even on a warm day.

Finally, don’t forget gardening vouchers.

Often us gardeners spot the perfect plant or gardening accessory when we’re strapped for cash, so vouchers are a perfect gift to save for a rainy day...and gardeners love rainy days, Valentine’s or not.

Why not join Mannofield Church Hillwalking Club on a wide range of walks, ranging from the easy to the more demanding? Our walks are from March to October, travelling by coach. We will also have a week-end away in Aberfeldy, by car. Many of the Cults Church Hillwalking Group also walk with us.

Our first few walks are: Saturday 30th March – St Combs – Fraserburgh Distance 7 miles, about 3.5 hours.

Saturday 27th April – Clachnaben Distance 6.3 miles, ascent 200m, about 3.75 hours or Distance 7.25 miles, ascent 600m, about 4.75hrs.

Saturday 25th May – Glen Esk – Falls of Unich via Loch Lee or via Cairn Caidloch and Falls of Damff Distance 7.8 miles, ascent 500m, about 5 hours or Distance 11.7 miles, ascent about 750m, about 6.75 hours.

Week-end away 15th & 16th June – Aberfeldy Saturday 29th June – Tomintoul – Ailnack Gorge Distance 7 miles, ascent 220m, about 3.75 hours or Distance 9.5 miles, ascent 300m, about 5.5 hours. Meal in Tomintoul.
