Holidays I do hope that you’ve had a lovely break and are gearing up for the children going back to school, the young adults going off to college and uni or even getting themselves a full-time job.

My three are all working and Richard is hoping for early retirement - in his dreams I say!!! But we have been thinking what will the pension pot look like and will we cope!

For those that don’t have those worries then why not kick off with an afternoon par-tea to celebrate the kids going back or just a nice time with some friends at the Village Hotel.

Why not pop to Cults and have a look at Scott Gilmour and Sonya Angus for some inspiration. Whilst your in Cults then maybe the Festival will tempt you, there is plenty for all the family.

The University are again seeking some willing volunteers to help with their studies and to be “pretend” patients for the young doctors! Do you have some time available?

If you are needing help to clear your head then a spot of hypnotherapy with Sam or engaging with some mindfulness. Lots of clubs and classes to get you out and about.

Try some art at Inchgarth Community Centre or Northern Arts Club.

Why Self Care is a Necessity, Not a Luxury A dwindling smartphone battery is often a massive source of stress but how many of us show the same concern for our own energy reserves?

Too often, we put self care at the very bottom of our priority list and this can lead to burnout. Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside The Rotary Club of Aderdeen Deeside meets each Wednesday at the Cults Hotel but draws its membership from across Aberdeen City and into Aberdeenshire. Some of its more recent activities are shown below.

Art Evening, Marcliffe at Pitfodels Sun 26th May This year’s event, “Bold and Beautiful”, featured Flowers in Watercolour by artist Susie Hunt, founder of the North East Open Studios (NEOS) and making her debut at the Art Evening. Susie is a painter and painting tutor working with predominantly waterbased media.

The Charity Art Event has been running for over 16 years based at The Marcliffe Hotel & Spa, Aberdeen, thanks to the continued kind generosity of Mr. Stewart Spence. During the evening Susie entertained and engaged with the audience, welcoming questions as she developed two paintings which were projected continuously onto a very large back-projection display screen using a high-quality colour CCTV system for all to see. These were auctioned at the end of the evening with all proceeds going to charity.

Further examples of the Susie’s work were also on sale in the gallery. 240 tickets were sold and including the proceeds from two raffles close to £5,000 was raised. This has been divided between SensationALL, the MS Society and Rotary Charities.

Partners Night 29th May 2019 Members and partners met at the Harbour Board Visitor Centre on Greyhope Rd. Torry where our host & speaker was Javier Baron, Community Officer from the main contracting company Dragados. The display within the Centre uses video, pictures, quizzes, and floor pictures to show the public details of what will be an exciting new venture in the City.

Cruise holidays from Aberdeen will start in mid 2020.

After the presentation the company adjourned to the Sand Dollar Restaurant for an excellent supper of either fish pie or chicken curry Kids Out, Craibstone, 12th June The 17 Clubs Rotary of Aberdeen and surrounding area, gave 496 special needs primary school children a fun day out with numerous activities. These included Horses, football, bouncy castles, face painting, police car, fire engine, owls, small animals, rope bridges, climbing wall, snacks, lunch and two magicians all culmulating with a disco.

Despite the dreary weather the children had a wonderful time. We are indebted to all the helpers who made this such a great day for the children which happened to be our 25th anniversary.

Ongoing Residents will be aware that statues have appeared at various locations around Aberdeen as part of the Oor Wullie’s Big Bucket Trail to raise awareness for children’s hospital charities. RCAD along with other local Rotary Clubs have sponsored the statue placed at the fountain at Duthie Park.

Bean Good study The UK is a major producer of broad beans in the world and is an important pulse crop for our economy, agriculture and nutrition. During milling the outer skin of the broad bean is removed (the hull), and this is an underutilised secondary product which is similar to wheat bran and rich in fibre and nutrients.

The Life List No Place Like It

Leaving home to share a house or flat is one of life’s milestones – even for those boomerang children.

It’s a yearning for independence and the reason why so much bedding and towelling disappears on their way out. Give them a notepad too, because there’s a lot to learn…

Writing your name on your food doesn’t magically protect it. But it does let housemates know whose food they’re eating.

Nothing can stop you getting that terrible tattoo now, except your better judgement!

You’ll understand why friends always like to hold wild parties at someone else’s house. Naturally, you’ll appreciate this the morning afterwards.

It’s not like Friends at all, unless there’s an

episode where everyone is broke and depressed with only tomato paste and dry crackers for breakfast.

Carpets and upholstery can be very unforgiving.

Agreeing the cleaning rota, when no one has any intention of sticking to it after the first week, is a form of secondary karma. Enjoy your pigsty!

It’s okay to be embarrassed about where you live, but not how you live.

16 August to 7 September 2019 Each year’s Festival programme is an exciting mix of activities to tempt residents into getting out and about or trying something new. Some events are one-offs and others have been running for a number of years (some since the first Festival back in 1975!).

We are grateful to the groups, clubs and small businesses who provide the Festival events free of charge. If you enjoy the event, please consider donating, joining and / or supporting these organisations in the longer term to help maintain our thriving community.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of one of our longest-standing events – the Calligraphy Exhibition. On show will be a representation of work throughout the years as well as projects undertaken this past session. This is to be surrounded by local garden flowers arranged by a team from the Cults Church.

We are delighted to welcome the Newton Dee Folk Festival into this year’s programme. The Folk Club meet in the evening every two months. This is their 5th 2-day Festival and we are delighted to make it part of the MBC Festival programme this year. There is no cost to attend during the day (the evening concert costs £6). You can enjoy Folk Music in its widest sense - traditional folk music, music from around the world, contemporary folk, flamenco, a bit of blues, country, bluegrass, bagpipes, jazz and whatever people are enthusiastic to share with others. Please go along and support them and pop into the Newton Dee Café while there!

This year’s programme also features a talk and demonstration by Elaine Lindsay from Something Corny.

Elaine is a member of the Guild of Straw Craftsmen and she blends traditional with contemporary designs to create accessories which have been featured nationally and internationally. She will present images of completed work followed by refreshments and a demonstration. Places are limited at this event – please contact Marjory if you would like to purchase a ticket.

Deeside Local Food Festival The Mixing Bowl is delighted to present the 5th Deeside Local Food Festival at Cults Academy, Quarry Road, on Sunday 15th September. The doors open at 11am and you are guaranteed to receive a warm, traditional Scottish welcome.

The festival is an annual one-day event that celebrates and showcases the very best handcrafted food and drink produced in our local area. The produce market will offer 55 stalls of tantalizingly tasty treats to tempt the most discerning foodie and provide a great opportunity to meet producers, sample and buy the incredible food on offer. You will be wowed by the huge variety available and we challenge you to leave with an empty shopping bag!

The ever-popular Street Food Cafe will be set up in the playground with a mouthwatering selection of lunch food to choose from with live music provided by local young musicians.

Some of the North East’s finest chefs will present interactive cooking demonstrations at the Marquee Stage and fish cookery demos at the Seafood Stage. Alternatively, drop in to the Food and Drink Talks to uncover the inside stories and to feel the passion that drives and inspires the producers.

For all those gin-lovers, look out for the ginblending workshops and remember to book early. The session will teach you about various botanicals, and allow you to create your own personally blended bottle of gin.

Kids will have a lot of fun too. They can attend the Children’s Afternoon Tea Workshop to make scones and cakes that they can take away to share with friends and family. Booking is essential. There will also be fun foodie activities, face painting and sports for the kids to enjoy.

Pop the date in your diary and round up your friends. Why not park at the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa overflow car park then take our shuttle bus up to the school? If you plan to park near the school please do come early.

The Deeside Local Food Festival is a perfect opportunity for the local community to come together and enjoy a family day out whilst supporting local businesses. Arches and arbours are available in a range of materials, with wood and metal being the most popular, both of which I find fit in with my gardening style. In these materials you can transform them with wood stains or paints to a bright blue, rich red or any colour you fancy!

Add Some Vertical Interest Whatever the size or shape of your garden, it will benefit from having some height added to it – and what better way to do this than with an arch or arbour? And, of course, any vertical structure you install in your garden makes for a new planting opportunity too…

Position an arbour to overlook a good view or attractive part of the garden and you instantly create a fabulous place to sit and relax.

An arch or an arbour can divide your garden into one or more rooms, a trick that makes your garden seem larger and more interesting.

Chosen carefully, arches and arbours are good looking and a feature in their own right, and if you clothe them with climbers you are adding to their appeal.

Plus, those climbers with the added ingredient of scent, like some of the rambling or

climbing roses, or honeysuckle or jasmine, can totally transform the whole garden with their wafting perfume.

Any vertical structure you install in your garden makes for a new planting opportunity The area around an arbour in a sunny spot with fairly freedraining soil can be planted with lavenders, so you can enjoy both the way it looks and the perfume and aromatic leaves after a stressful day.

In sunny positions, plant thymes or camomile as a lawn on the approach to your archway or arbour; a fantastic aroma will be released when your feet gently

An arch or an arbour can be constructed from scratch, but there is a wide range of ready-made arbours and kits for both arches and arbours available. If you choose wood, do ensure that it is a wood which is either naturally going to resist decay – western red cedar or a hardwood such as oak would be my preference, followed by Douglas fir or larch. Alternatively you can choose a softwood which has been tanalised or pressure-treated with a wood preservative, which will usually be somewhat cheaper.

By choosing a wooden arch, perhaps with a rounded top and trellis up the sides, you ensure a really good planting space, and this more rustic look fits well in an informal garden. Many wooden arches are relatively inexpensive and easy to install.

Would you like to help train the Doctors and Health Care Professionals of the future?

We are currently recruiting enthusiastic volunteers (Patient Partners) to give a little of their time to act as ‘Teaching Patients’, to assist medical, dental and other health professional students improve their communication and examination skills.

What does a Patient Partner do and why?

Patient Partners are members of the public who assist in practice and learning sessions by being available to speak to and be examined by our students. Patient Partners are used during student examinations too.

There is no prior training or experience necessary to be selected to join the programme, all we ask is that a Patient Partner be willing to help, be reliable and most importantly have a good sense of humour!

There are two areas in which Patient Partners assist: Communication: Patient Partners role play a health problem from a scenario (short description of symptoms and how they have been affecting you, as well as a social and medical history) so that students can practise interviewing patients away from the hustle and bustle of a busy hospital ward. No acting experience is required.

Examination: Patient Partners select the examinations. Patient Partners are examined for different types of non-invasive procedures/ examinations (for example, the taking of a blood pressure, listening to a patient’s lungs or having joints examined/put through normal movements).

Some Patient Partners are involved with both communication and physical examination sessions.

Watching and naming your thoughts and feelings: “Mindfulness isn’t about making these thoughts go away, but rather about seeing them as mental events,” says Dr Williams.

“Imagine standing at a bus station and seeing ‘thought buses’ coming and going without having to get on them and be taken away. This can be very hard at first, but with gentle persistence it is possible.”

Why Doctors are prescribing Mindfulness

Mindfulness has gone from buzzword to a therapy increasingly prescribed by doctors. So what’s it all about?

Mindfulness is…

• Increasing your awareness of what’s going on inside and outside yourself in a particular moment—both physical sensations and emotions.

• Stopping to really notice what you’re thinking and feeling and what sparked these thoughts and emotions.

How it can help Today, many of us rush through our days, reacting ‘off the cuff’ and missing opportunities to take a breath and appreciate what’s around us. Mindfulness means taking a step back to examine what’s going on rather than just reacting.

“It’s about allowing ourselves to see the present moment clearly. When we do that, it can positively change the way we see ourselves and our lives,” says Professor Mark Williams, former director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre,

By becoming more aware of your thoughts and feelings, you can recognise signs of stress and anxiety earlier and begin

to see patterns, recognising those that aren’t helpful. This can make it easier to prevent them overwhelming you or leading you into a spiral of negative emotions or actions that make the situation worse.

Mindfulness is increasingly recommended by doctors for mental health

We can all benefit from mindfulness, but it’s now officially recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to prevent depression in people who’ve had three or more bouts, and is increasingly recommended by doctors for helping with chronic conditions or pain, as well as stress, anxiety or depression.

There’s emerging evidence that it can ease insomnia, too.

Practising Mindfulness The NHS recommends:

Noticing the everyday and trying something new: notice the details of what’s going on around you and try a different seat or going somewhere new for lunch to see things in a new way.

Identify them. “That’s my worry about my Dad’s health.”

“I’m stressed because I’ve got a really busy week.” By being aware of your fears and concerns, you’re more likely to recognise when you’re letting them grow disproportionately to the thing they’re about.

Freeing yourself from the past and future: realising that worries about the past or future can dominate, stopping you from enjoying the now.

If you realise you’ve been reliving or pre-living negative experiences for several minutes, take a moment to focus yourself in the present, appreciating the day and the moment you’re living now.

Taking time out: ideally having more formal, longer mindfulness sessions, focusing on your breathing and your body and bringing your attention back whenever your mind wanders. This could be at home or while travelling.

Find the time and place most convenient and helpful for you.
