So decision got made. We went for slate for the patios and lovely strong porcelain for the front paths it will be nice when we get around to laying it all. We also got some old tree stumps dug out - what a difference that has made - now to move the shed into the space - also added to the to do list.

Countesswells is the place to be. We’ve got a retirement sale, Gifted has opened it’s door to the public and very nice it looks too. If you are looking for a shop to let then this would be the perfect buzzing area for your new business. Pop into the Palm Court and try out their new menu. Thank you to all who recommended they use the gazette to spread the word - very much appreciated.

The Art Fair is back to it’s original venue of the Music Hall and it is now FREE to all. So do put that one in your diary.

Sight tests are about more than checking if you need glasses Seven Steps to Healthy Eyes According to the Royal National Institute for the Blind, around half of all sight loss in the UK is avoidable. National Eye Health Week (NEHW) is running from the 23rd to the 29th of September this year, reminding us of the importance of eye health and the vital role regular eye tests play. So how can you look after your eyes?

Keep alcohol consumption low Heavy alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing cataracts and early age-related macular degeneration (AMD). By causing deficiency of Vitamins B1 and A, it can also cause weakness or paralysis in the eye muscles, night blindness, corneal thinning or perforation, dryness, and even blindness.

Heavy drinkers (especially those who smoke) also run the risk of tobacco-alcohol amblyopia, a progressive optic neuropathy that typically causes bilateral, painless, visual impairment with loss of colour vision and a central visual field defect.

Excessive alcohol intake during pregnancy can cause foetal alcohol syndrome, resulting in ocular abnormalities in the baby (optic nerve development issues, eye coordination difficulties and drooping eyelids).

Both men and women should keep alcohol consumption under fourteen units a week. If you regularly drink this many units, ensure they’re spread out over at least three days.

Don’t smoke Aside from aging, smoking is the biggest risk factor for developing AMD, and smokers are far more likely to develop it than non-smokers. Smoking also increases your risk of developing cataracts.

Eat an eye-friendly diet Diet plays a highly significant role in eye health, particularly in the prevention of cataracts and AMD. Research indicates that eating just one portion of fish a week may reduce your AMD risk by up to 40%.

Important foods to include in your diet are: Cod, sardines, tuna, mackerel and salmon Green, leafy vegetables like spinach or kale, and broccoli Brightly-coloured fruit and vegetables such as corn, carrots, orange sweet peppers, oranges, blueberries, grapes and papaya Eggs Whole grains and avocados Garlic, onions, shallots and capers Soy Take regular exercise Lack of exercise contributes

significantly to several eye conditions, particularly amongst the over-60s. Exercise may reduce the risk of sight loss caused by narrowing or hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure and diabetes, and it’s linked to a reduced risk of glaucoma, cataracts and AMD. Maintain a healthy weight and do everything possible to avoid Type 2 Diabetes Maintaining a healthy weight helps preserve macular pigment density, which in turn can prevent AMD onset. Excess body weight has also been linked to glaucoma. Diabetes can cause diabetic retinopathy and (potentially) blindness.

Exercising and eating healthily can help you reduce your Type 2 Diabetes risk and maintain a healthy weight.

Protect your eyes from UV light UV light can damage your eyes just as it can damage your skin and it’s a risk factor for cataracts.

Never look at the sun directly and on bright days always wear sunglasses bearing the CE mark or the British Standard BS EN ISO 12312-1:2013, which indicates they offer adequate ultraviolet protection.

Have regular eye tests – even if you think your think your eyesight and health are fine Sight tests are about more than checking if you need glasses.

They can detect eye conditions you may be unaware of as yet, catching them at an early stage when treatment may be easier and sight loss potentially avoidable. Sight tests can also detect other health conditions, including high blood pressure and diabetes.

Everyone should have a sight test every two years, but you may need one more frequently if you’re over 40, of AfroCaribbean or Asian descent, or have a family history of eye conditions.

NHS eye tests are free for everyone in Scotland. If you’re in England, Northern Ireland or Wales you qualify for a free NHS sight test if you are: Aged under 16, aged 18 or under and in full-time education, or aged over 60.

Claiming benefit (i.e. Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Incomerelated Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit). If you are receiving Tax Credits or Universal Credit, you may also be entitled.

Diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma.

Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside The Rotary Club of Aderdeen Deeside meets each Wednesday at the Cults Hotel but draws its membership from across Aberdeen City and into Aberdeenshire. Some of its more recent activities are shown below.

Art Evening, Marcliffe at Pitfodels Sun 26th May This year’s event, “Bold and Beautiful”, featured Flowers in Watercolour by artist Susie Hunt, founder of the North East Open Studios (NEOS) and making her debut at the Art Evening. Susie is a painter and painting tutor working with predominantly waterbased media.

The Charity Art Event has been running for over 16 years based at The Marcliffe Hotel & Spa, Aberdeen, thanks to the continued kind generosity of Mr. Stewart Spence. During the evening Susie entertained and engaged with the audience, welcoming questions as she developed two paintings which were projected continuously onto a very large back-projection display screen using a high-quality colour CCTV system for all to see. These were auctioned at the end of the evening with all proceeds going to charity.

Further examples of the Susie’s work were also on sale in the gallery. 240 tickets were sold and including the proceeds from two raffles close to £5,000 was raised. This has been divided between SensationALL, the MS Society and Rotary Charities.

Partners Night 29th May 2019 Members and partners met at the Harbour Board Visitor Centre on Greyhope Rd. Torry where our host & speaker was Javier Baron, Community Officer from the main contracting company Dragados. The display within the Centre uses video, pictures, quizzes, and floor pictures to show the public details of what will be an exciting new venture in the City.

Cruise holidays from Aberdeen will start in mid 2020.

After the presentation the company adjourned to the Sand Dollar Restaurant for an excellent supper of either fish pie or chicken curry Kids Out, Craibstone, 12th June The 17 Clubs Rotary of Aberdeen and surrounding area, gave 496 special needs primary school children a fun day out with numerous activities. These included Horses, football, bouncy castles, face painting, police car, fire engine, owls, small animals, rope bridges, climbing wall, snacks, lunch and two magicians all culmulating with a disco.

Despite the dreary weather the children had a wonderful time. We are indebted to all the helpers who made this such a great day for the children which happened to be our 25th anniversary.

Ongoing Residents will be aware that statues have appeared at various locations around Aberdeen as part of the Oor Wullie’s Big Bucket Trail to raise awareness for children’s hospital charities. RCAD along with other local Rotary Clubs have sponsored the statue placed at the fountain at Duthie Park.

Going Green With the ground still warm from the summer sun and moisture levels in the soil increasing, September is the perfect time to create a new lawn.

Using grass seed is cheaper than buying turf, plus you can choose a suitable grass mixture and the lawn can be shaped without having to cut pieces of turf.

First, examine the site and calculate the total area to be seeded, then study the grass seed packs in your local garden centre. Your choice will be between various grades of utility lawn (usually containing some rye grass for toughness), finer lawns that need more care and mixtures suitable for partial shade.

It will be about three weeks before the seedlings emerge and then about ten weeks before the lawn can be cut, so bear this in mind when choosing your start time.

Remove all weeds (including roots), old grass and debris. Perennial weeds should be dug out or killed off with weedkiller – those containing glyphosate allow grass seed to be sown straight away.

Dig over and examine the area – ideally you want a light, free-draining loam that does not become too dry in summer, or waterlogged or compacted in winter. Add horticultural sand and some bulky organic matter to heavy soil to improve drainage, and dig plenty of well-rotted organic matter into light soil for better moisture retention.

Sowing too thinly encourages weeds; sowing too thickly means poor-quality seedlings that are less likely to thrive.

For most gardens hand sowing is perfect; for larger lawns borrowing or hiring a machine may be worthwhile. Sow the entire area with the lawn seed and lightly rake over a thin layer of soil to partially incorporate the seed into the soil.

Water regularly with a fine sprinkler or watering can. Use twigs or cane with taut cotton tied between them, or netting stretched taut, to deter birds.

Rake the soil repeatedly to achieve a level surface free from large stones, plant remains or other debris. Gauge the level by eye or use a system of pegs and a spirit level if necessary.

Choosing a window treatment

Curtains, blinds or even shutters – we look at how to choose the best window treatment options.

Window treatments are a key part of interior design, adding colour, pattern, texture and sophistication. They can correct a badly proportioned window, disguise an unattractive view, filter bright light and provide a visual link between inside and out.

Practicality comes first. Is the window overlooked? What does it look onto? Is it an unusual size or shape? Is there room for curtains? What is below the window? Is blackout necessary? Next, think about your home’s style and what else is in the room, to narrow down the options.

Curtains Colour, pattern, fabric weight and hanging style are important. Grander curtains tend to suit larger, period rooms, while simple curtains better suit modern properties.

Check the heading: usually, a tape (pulled to form either loose gathers or more formal pleats) is hooked onto curtain rings, but tab, tie, eyelet or hemmed tops are other choices.

Curtain poles come in a variety of materials, with simple or ornamental finials. Curtain track is sometimes better: it can be mounted on walls or ceilings, bent around bays, and needs less clearance.

Maximise natural light by fitting a pole or track wide enough to allow the curtains to be drawn away from the window.

Floor-length curtains are generally better than sill-length, though not if radiators, window seats or furnishings are in the way. Linings help curtains hang neatly and protect from fading, dirt and condensation.

Blackout linings are ideal for bedrooms, while thermal linings can be an effective insulator.

Blinds Blinds are great for modern homes, bathrooms, kitchens and smaller rooms.

Roller blinds are the most basic style, or choose roll-up versions tied with tape or ribbon. Roman blinds suit most rooms. Choose fabric that is mid-weight and not too textured, as blinds need to roll or fold easily. Consider combining more than one colour or pattern; perhaps a plain and a sheer fabric, to allow light through at the top of the window while giving privacy beneath. Plain blinds can be boosted with a good-looking pull or trim. For a dressier look, add curtains as well.

Shutters Shutters suit both old and new properties.

They are expensive but good at blocking sound and light, and can provide extra security. Both plain and louvred shutters offer privacy and light control, and can be left as natural wood or painted. They can be made in a variety of styles and fitted within a reveal or to fold back against the walls.

Why Self Care is a Necessity, Not a Luxury A dwindling smartphone battery is often a massive source of stress but how many of us show the same concern for our own energy reserves?

Bean Good study The UK is a major producer of broad beans in the world and is an important pulse crop for our economy, agriculture and nutrition. During milling the outer skin of the broad bean is removed (the hull), and this is an underutilised secondary product which is similar to wheat bran and rich in fibre and nutrients.

Deeside Local Food Festival The Mixing Bowl is delighted to present the 5th Deeside Local Food Festival at Cults Academy, Quarry Road, on Sunday 15th September. The doors open at 11am and you are guaranteed to receive a warm, traditional Scottish welcome.

The festival is an annual one-day event that celebrates and showcases the very best handcrafted food and drink produced in our local area. The produce market will offer 55 stalls of tantalizingly tasty treats to tempt the most discerning foodie and provide a great opportunity to meet producers, sample and buy the incredible food on offer. You will be wowed by the huge variety available and we challenge you to leave with an empty shopping bag!

The ever-popular Street Food Cafe will be set up in the playground with a mouthwatering selection of lunch food to choose from with live music provided by local young musicians.

Some of the North East’s finest chefs will present interactive cooking demonstrations at the Marquee Stage and fish cookery demos at the Seafood Stage. Alternatively, drop in to the Food and Drink Talks to uncover the inside stories and to feel the passion that drives and inspires the producers.

For all those gin-lovers, look out for the gin-blending workshops and remember to book early. The session will teach you about various botanicals, and allow you to create your own personally blended bottle of gin.

Kids will have a lot of fun too. They can attend the Children’s Afternoon Tea Workshop to make scones and cakes that they can take away to share with friends and family. Booking is essential. There will also be fun foodie activities, face painting and sports for the kids to enjoy.

Pop the date in your diary and round up your friends. Why not park at the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa overflow car park then take our shuttle bus up to the school? If you plan to park near the school please do come early.

Be a PATIENT PARTNER at the Suttie Centre

Would you like to help train the Doctors and Health Care Professionals of the future?

We are currently recruiting enthusiastic volunteers (Patient Partners) to give a little of their time to act as ‘Teaching Patients’, to assist medical, dental and other health professional students improve their communication and examination skills.

What does a Patient Partner do and why?

Patient Partners are members of the public who assist in practice and learning sessions by being available to speak to and be examined by our students. Patient Partners are used during student examinations too.

There is no prior training or experience necessary to be selected to join the programme, all we ask is that a Patient Partner be willing to help, be reliable and most importantly have a good sense of humour!

There are two areas in which Patient Partners assist: Communication: Patient Partners role play a health problem from a scenario (short description of symptoms and how they have been affecting you, as well as a social and medical history) so that students can practise interviewing patients away from the hustle and bustle of a busy hospital ward. No acting experience is required.

Examination: Patient Partners select the examinations. Patient Partners are examined for different types of non-invasive procedures/ examinations (for example, the taking of a blood pressure, listening to a patient’s lungs or having joints examined/put through normal movements).

Some Patient Partners are involved with both communication and physical examination sessions.
