My Opinion (1) Not new. Invented around mid '90s. Smartphones gave QR codes potential: Everyone can scan the codes themselves. Business card application: Very appealing. Can scan and store many cards, fast.
My Opinion (2) Advertising application. No need for large flyers => cheaper ad's Faster connection from ad to e-shop. Curiosity acts as attracting factor. Part numbering application. Stores more than simple UPC code. Less spacious. Items can be stored with their names rather than numbers that refer to names.
