WE ARE GBCA

Established in 1891, we are the Philadelphia chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). We provide over 300 member companies with access to advocacy, networking opportunities, safety services, education and training programs. We proudly support and promote union commercial construction, and take strides toward advancing the industry with workforce development initiatives.

As one of America’s oldest trade associations, we advance commercial construction in the Philadelphia region by serving as a powerful voice and a critical resource.

OUR MISSION

General Building Contractors Association advances the union commercial construction industry by serving members as the leader in labor relations, education, advocacy, safety, and networking opportunities.
2 GBCA 2023 ANNUAL REPORT

BUILDING EXCELLENCE AT EVERY ANGLE

GBCA is the recognized leader of the Philadelphia region’s union commercial construction industry. Providing resources across all departments, we help guide the industry and keep our members informed, educated, and ready for any challenge. Together we achieved excellence at every angle in 2023.

Thanks to top commercial contractors, subcontractors, and industry partners, a devoted Board of Directors, and talented staff, GBCA continues to lead the advancement of union commercial construction in Greater Philadelphia. Drawing on a legacy more than 130 years strong, we advocate for the industry, help our members build their businesses, and serve as an indispensable resource for education, safety, professional development, and more.

Everything we do centers around setting our members — and our region — up for success. Our work throughout 2023 has had, and will continue to have, a measurable impact on our ability to do exactly that.

Commercial construction is one of many keys to positive change in our city. Communities flourish when spaces are developed, reimagined, or restored responsibly … and when the highest standards steer this work. What’s more, construction offers a tangible path to economic stability for those willing to put in the hard work to build familysustaining careers.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The first phase of GBCA’s three-year strategic plan was completed in 2023. As such, we have an even stronger foundation to build upon as we drive the industry forward and bring these career opportunities to more Philadelphians. Our efforts to date will also pay dividends in enabling us to work even more effectively with our union partners, further diversify our membership, and help contractors navigate shifts in the industry.

We recognize the world around us is changing. Now more than ever, we are committed to leading the way by using our collective strength to guide our members and do what’s best for our fellow Philadelphians.

4 GBCA 2023 ANNUAL REPORT

For GBCA, 2023 was marked by excellence in every regard. Thanks to the outstanding commitment and collaboration of our members, Board, and staff, we had another extremely productive year — the impact of which will be felt well into the future.

The caliber of craftsmanship embedded in the multitude of impressive projects our members brought to fruition in 2023 is truly awe-inspiring. This work not only supports the organizations, institutions, and individuals they were built for. It also raised the bar for construction across the board. Innovation in its many forms reached an all-time high, and our members’ track records demonstrate that safety remains our industry’s most important priority.

On the advocacy front, we fortified our strong and ever-growing presence at the local and state levels. We worked closely with Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration throughout the year, as well as Mayor Jim Kenney through the end of his term. We also built upon years of collaboration with the now Mayor Cherelle Parker and are eager

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO

to continue the work of promoting our industry’s interests as we steward development throughout the city.

To boost the industry’s talent pipeline in a major way, we kicked off efforts to educate 25,000 school-aged students about promising career opportunities in construction. At the same time, our Construction Leadership Council grew by more than 50 percent as the next generation of leaders step up to help drive us all forward.

These are just the highlights. I’m tremendously proud of everything we achieved together in 2023 and look forward to continuing this momentum as we build the future of our industry.
