All Green Star rating tools include a 'Waste Management’ credit which aims to encourage and reward management practices that minimise the amount of construction and demolition waste from base building and/or interior fitout works that is disposed to landfill.
Stakeholder feedback collected from users of the Green Star rating system and from the waste management sector has highlighted a number of shortcomings in the existing ‘Waste Management’ credit. These include criticism around the emphasis on recycling rates, and the verification of reporting mechanism in the industry. As a result, the GBCA proposes to both:
introduce a revised credit that more holistically addresses construction and demolition waste; and
improve waste management practices through the introduction of operational and reporting criteria for the waste industry.
