It’s really a safety and law enforcement issue.” In addition to replacing the sesquicentennial plates, DMV will also replace other standard auto plates that have red letters, as they, too, are showing their age. The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators recommends license plates with white backgrounds and black letters or numbers. This provides the most contrast and is considered optimal. Holders of plates being replaced will receive new plates over the next 14 months, starting in August. Dead crow tests positive for West Nile WASHBURN COUNTY - The Washburn County Health Department reported this week that a dead crow found in the county on Wednesday, Aug. 21, has tested positive for West Nile virus. This is the first bird that test positive for the virus in the county since surveillance for the mosquito-borne virus began on May 1. “The positive bird means that residents of Washburn County need to be more vigilant in their personal protective measures to prevent mosquito bites,” Jerri Pederson, health officer/ public health supervisor, said. West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds. “Washburn County residents should be aware of West Nile virus and take some simple steps to protect themselves against mosquito bites,” Pederson said. “The West Nile virus seems to be here to stay, so the best way to avoid the disease is to reduce exposure to and eliminate breeding

grounds for mosquitoes.” The majority of people, 80 percent, who are infected with the virus do not get sick. Those who do become ill usually experience mild symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle ache, rash and fatigue. Less than 1 percent of people infected with the virus will get seriously ill. The Washburn County Health Department recommends limiting time spent outside at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active; applying insect repellent; making sure windows and door screens are in good repair, changing the water in birdbaths and pet dishes at least every three days, turning over wheelbarrows, wading pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs, trimming tall grass and weeds, and landscaping to prevent water from pooling in lowlying areas. For more information go to dhs.wisconsin.gov and search “west nile.” - with information from the Washburn County Health Dept.
