NEWCASTLE Interview with “New Black Shades’’ How did you find out about GBOB? From TV Musical influences? Red Hot Chilli Peppers, John Butler, ACDC

The first of the 2012 GBOB Heats fired up this year in Newcastle. The competition took place at the Great Northern Hotel where local bands gathered to show their musical skills. New Black Shades, the winners of the night, are a group of fresh talent worth keeping an eye out for! Tortoise Head Platoon put on a strong performance to take out second place.

What are you looking forward to from now? Playing and travelling How did you form and how long have you been together? Through friendship, and now we’ve been together as a band for 5 months. How did you find the local Heat? Fun! We enjoyed the experience!

WARRNAMBOOL GBOB arrived at Warrnambool this year for a exciting Heat at The Loft. A large crowd came to the live music competition to show their support for the bands. From acoustic songs to tunes with some cracking heavy riffs, the variety of the live music was immense. The winners of the night were Michele’s Velocity, five boys from the local area who really revelled in their victory!

Interview with “Michelle’s Velocity” How did you find out about GBOB? Contacted by phone Musical influences? Beatles, Linkin Park, Red Hot Chili Peppers What are you looking forward to from now? Success with the group, and getting a chance in the Finals to win those awesome Cuck Taylors that are up for grabs!! And the camera! How did the band form and how long have they been together? Through High School. It’s been 2 years...time flies!!! How did you find the local Heat? We loved it...enjoyed the experience...awesome!

MELBOURNE Interview with “Blackbirds� How did you find out about GBOB? Through an email. Musical Influences? Eagles, Beatles. How would you describe your sound? Passion, energetic, original.

The competition went wild in Melbourne with the GBOB Heat being held at the Elephant and Wheelbarrow, St Kilda. Local bands of all genres and ages stood up on stage to rock out live music to a full room of music fans. The vibrant, fiddle-playing band, Blackbirds, came out on top, with runners up The Blazing Enfields, and The Essentials also progressing through to the Victorian Final, which will be held later in the year.

What are you looking forward to most in the competition? Excitement, being part of the event. How did you find the local Heat? Good bands, fun and professional.

SYDNEY Interview with “Kaato” How did you find out about GBOB? Through an email Musical Influences? David bowie, Anberlin, Guns N Roses How would you describe your sound? A new and original form of rock, our music is undescribable! What are you looking forward to most in the competition? Getting to perform on stage in front of so many people. We just love being on stage. How did you form and how long have you been together? We’ve been together for a year now…we met at school before forming the band so we’ve been close for a long time.

The Valve Bar & Venue was a fantastic choice for this year’s Sydney GBOB Heat. Judges for the night included Steve Flack (Australian Guitar Magazine) and Tony Hogan (The Zips), who have both supported the music industry for many years. The event was a smash, with Kaato winning the Heat, and Archaic Revival placing second.

How did you find the local heat? Such an amazing experience, as well as getting to meet bands in our area.
