THE HISTORY OF NEERLANDIA -URK
Neerlandia-Urk is a family business based in the well-known fishing village of Urk in the Netherlands. This former island is the fish center of Europe for many years. In 1972, the two brothers Herman and Albert Romkes started their own fish processing company. A hardworking mentality and their language skills enabled them to build an internationally oriented company. It started with the export of fresh fish from the North Sea. Fish that had been caught by local fishermen. In the first 30 years, the core activity was manually filleting the fresh fish from the North Sea. Meanwhile, the next generation entered the business and expanded further. Nevertheless, Neerlandia-Urk also went through difficult times. Above all, the family is grateful for how it all went and sees it as a blessing from God.
IN-HOUSE PRODUCTION
All products have been produced in-house by Neerlandia-Urk since inception of the business. It has been one of the leading fish processing companies in Urk for almost half a century. Over 200 employees are dedicated to the processing and supply of fish.
In 2000, Neerlandia-Urk moved to new premises with an ultramodern fish processing facility with its own deepfreeze installation and storage of deep-frozen products. Much fish is filleted by hand by competent professionals who have grown up with fish. Besides North Sea fish, Neerlandia-Urk also processes a large volume of salmon, as well as fish caught in the North Atlantic Ocean around Greenland and Canada and the Bering Sea of Alaska. Neerlandia-Urk has direct contacts with the producers there. Most products are transported to our clients all over the world, like the United States, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Scandinavia, within 48 hours.

We sourche for products which are fully traceable when it comes to the importation of fish too. Our overseas partners also use sustainable, MSC-certified fisheries.
Neerlandia-Urk has partnered with the Z300 ‘Sola Gratia’ fishing vessel. This ship is used for various forms of sustainable fishing, fly shooting in winter and twin-rigging in the summer period.

ALASKA
FLATFISH
Neerlandia-Urk has started to import flatfish directly from the United States since December 2021. Currently, there are major stock shortages due to the stagnation in traditional seafood supplies. Therefore, the processing of rock sole, yellowfin sole, Alaska plaice etc., will be started. There is already great interest and a large number of applications.
Neerlandia’s product range will initially consist of American flatfish species caught in the Pacific Ocean. The catch area FAO 67 near Alaska.
The freezing of Pacific flatfish takes place directly on board the American trawlers. After the catch, the fish is immediately frozen and packed in transport boxes, so that it retains the highest possible quality.
The big advantage is that the ship can continue fishing until the hold is full. With greater distances and stormy weather conditions in Alaska, this is economically advantageous and above all sustainable.
The product range consists of:
YELLOWFIN SOLE (Limanda aspera)
This Pacific species of dab is comparable to Dutch dab from the North Sea in terms of flavour and structure. The quality, however, is slightly lower than that of North Sea fish. All Yellowfin sole is MSC certified.
ALASKA PLAICE (Pleuronectes quadrituberculatus)
This Pacific plaice species is comparable to Dutch plaice from the North Sea in terms of structure. However, the quality and taste is slightly lower compared to the variety from the North Sea. All Alaske plaice is MSC certified.
ROCKSOLE (Lepidopsetta bilineata)
It has a mild flavour and a firm texture. The name sole is somewhat confusing as it is a type of plaice. In Germany it is known as Pacific plaice and in Italy as Pacific flounder. All rocksole is MSC certified.
