HANCOCK In 1990, an Alabama kid made a big splash in Garden City. But before that, the nation’s top high school prospect, signed with Jerry Tarkanian and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. That’s when fate intervened. Hancock failed to qualify through the NCAA Clearinghouse, meaning he had to take his talents elsewhere. That led him instead to enroll at Garden City Community College, where he could officially become eligible to transfer to another university after completing his coursework. Hancock wasted no time getting adjusted to the Jayhawk Conference, averaging 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals per game as a freshman, earning his third straight Parade All-American selection, while landing on the JUCO All-American third team. As a sophomore, Hancock was even better, bumping his average to nearly 22 points and 12 rebounds per game. He turned heads with his 37-point, 14-rebound, 10 assist triple double vs. Barton. And by season’s end, Hancock was named the 1991-92 NJCAA Player of the Year. Four-year schools took notice, and following his sophomore campaign, Hancock transferred to the University of Kansas. In 1993, the junior helped the Jayhawks capture the Big Eight regular-season crown, earning the second seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks dominated, making it all the way to the Final Four before falling to North Carolina. After the ‘93 season, Hancock left Kansas, eventually transferring to Indiana State. But he never played there, and instead, spent a season overseas before being taken by the Charlotte Hornets in the second round of the 1994 NBA Draft. Hancock spent four years in the NBA, playing for the Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks, Atlanta Hakws and San Antonio Spurs. Hancock still holds the Garden City program record for most points scored over two seasons (1,180).

BUSTER STRENGTH GARDEN CITY IS THE ONLY PROGRAM IN THE JAYHAWK CONFERENCE THAT HAS A FULLTIME STRENGTH COACH. ENDURANCE AND POWER BUILDS RESULTS
Bill Morosco enters his first sesaon as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Garden City Community College. He spent the previous two seasons at Independence, turning around a program that had suffered four losing seasons in a five-year span. During his inaugural campaign, the Pirates won 23 games, their most victories in a single season since 2011. The following year, his squad knocked off eventual National Champion Coffeyville.
“Whenever you takeover a program, there is a dddd lengthy list of things you have to do quickly. However, nothing is more important than establishing your culture. And I believe that is something that we have attacked. I’m very proud of the way our young men have embraced our culture. They are very unselfish and compete with everything they have. -Garden City Head Coach Bill Morosco

PRESEASON
NOTEBOOK .5 seconds is all most fans will remember about April 7, 2021. Jaduhkiss Soto, who was inexplicably fouled shooting a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the Broncbusters’ Region VI semifinal showdown with Barton County, sank three free throws to give Garden City an 80-79 advantage. But after a timeout, Head Coach Cole Dewey instructed Mo Diarra to guard the baseline. What ensued will go down as one of the craziest finishes in recent memory. Jaheim Holden purposely undercut the Broncbusters’ star post, who tried to push through the dummy screen only to be called for a personal foul. Holden sprinted to the other end, knocked down two freebies, and just like that, Garden City’s season was over. “That was totally on me,” Dewey said after the game. “Our guys won this one, and I lost it for them.” Those precious moments are the ones most people remember. But the sight of Garden City walking off the floor that night was eerie; as if a cloud of black
smoke filled the air of an already tumultuous season. It was not only the end of the Broncbusters’ postseason run, but the end of Dewey’s tenure as Head Coach. Less than a month later, Dewey accepted an assistant job at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, leaving the program searching for a new head coach for the second straight season. But administration already had an idea of who they wanted. “Bill Morosco was one of the guys who we looked at when we hired Cole,” Vice President of Athletics, Colin Lamb said. “What he did at Independence was remarkable, and his teams were always competitive.” On May 12, the school made it official, nabbing one of the best young coaches in the business. “The school, the community, and the people, really impressed me,” Morosco said during his introductory press conference. “During my last two years in the Jayhawk, I have always been impressed with the Garden City campus and the
community it draws from. I’m also impressed with Dr. Ruda and Vice President, Colin Lamb. The 31-year old had already nagivated through the turbulent Jayhawk Conference, guiding Independence to a 23-9 record in 2019-their most wins in nearly a decade. The following season, the Pirates took down eventual National Champion Coffeyville. “This program will be team-oriented,” Morosco added. “We usually have four or five different guys scoring in double figures. We prefer a collection of individuals.” While Morosco recruited a fantastic class, his biggest accomplishment was luring Diarra into coming back for another season. The sophomore, who spent the summer in Paris, made his return over the summer, providing an already solid lineup with a massive boost in the post. “Mo can be that special player,” Morosco explained. “It has to be consistent, but he can rebound and stretch the floor.” Diarra’s freshman campaign was met with plenty of inconsistency. Still, he averaged 8.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, posting six double-doubles and finishing fourth in the conference in boards. “Our goal for Mo is to average 20 rebounds per game,” Morosco stated. “Can that happen all the time? Probably not. But, when he can be that type of force, he can be a very special player.” Now back on campus, Diarra has the attention of Power-5 and mid-major schools across the country. And he’s joined by a fantastic group that could have the Broncbusters right in the mix of a competitive conference race.

The team
Diarra is one of the main core players returning from last year’s region semifinal squad. Playing alongside him is point guard June Lewis and forward Riny Lual, who joined Diarra after last season on Corey Bryant’s soccer team. Garden City also added some length at the guard position, signing Josh Nwankwo, a 6-7 marksman from Oklahoma City who was named the offensive player of the year in the Big 8 Conference as a senior. He averaged 20 points, seven rebounds, and 2.5 assists while shooting 50 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the line, leading Putnam City North to a state title.
N O T E B O O K
The early marquee matchup on the second-half of the schedule happens at home on Jan. 12 when Butler comes to town. Three days later, the Broncbusters travel to the Sports Arena to play Hutch. “There is no doubt that the KJCCC is the
Then there’s Heru Bligen, a Division-I transfer from Longwood University who averaged 6.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists last season. A 4.0 student, Bligen could be one of Morosco’s best all-around recruits. His backcourt mate is Tone Hunter, a 6-1 point guard from Las Vegas, NV whose silky-smooth jumper and high basketball I.Q. gives Morosco a perfect 1-2 punch at the guard spot.
The schedule
Morosco has a couple of tricky games to navigate during the non-conference portion of the schedule, including a road matchup at Frank Phillips on Nov. 9 and a back-to-back games vs. Labette and Neosho in Dodge City on Nov. 12 and 13. But the real fun begins on Nov. 17 in Great Bend, where the Broncbusters begin Jayhawk play in the same gym where their season came to an end back in April. That’s followed up with a showdown with defending National Champion Coffeyville at Conestoga Arena on Nov. 20. It does not get much easier from there with road dates at Morosco’s old stomping grounds Independence on Nov. 27 and at Dodge City on Dec. 4. The Conquistadors were ranked 10th in the preseason polls. They close out the first-semester schedule vs. Seward, Northwest Tech, and Cowley.
premiere basketball conference in Junior College,” Morosco said. “Hall of Fame coaches, outstanding institutions committed to athletic success, unbelievable talent and athleticism, rabid fan bases, hostile home court advantages and lengthy conference travel, this league is second to none. Anyone who wins this conference will be more than preprared to compete for a National Championship.”
The Jayhawk Conference
The league also looks a little different in 2021-22. Steve Eck resigned at Hutch, giving way to Tommy DeSalme, who guided Cowley to the National Championship Game in the spring. In Great Bend, Jeremy Coombs left Neosho to replace Craig Fletchall, who stepped down after nearly two decades at Barton. And in Arkansas City, Donnie Jackson was hired to replace DeSalme after winning 183 games in eight seasons at Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa.

ill Morosco begins his first year as the Head Coach at Garden City Community College.
Morosco brings a wealth of experience to the sidelines. He has coached at three NCAA Division I programs – Presbyterian College, The Citadel and UC Davis, coached a Top-25 Division II program at Barry University and helped lead NJCAA member Eastern Florida State College to the Division I National Tournament Final Four, finishing 3rd in the nation. He comes to Garden City after spending the last two years as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Independence Community College in the KJCCC East.
In his two years at ICC Coach Morosco completed a total face lift of the Pirates Men’s Basketball Program amassing a total record of 36-19 (.655), 23-16 (.590) in KJCCC, and 12-4 (.750) against KJCCC West opponents. Morosco also overhauled the talent level at ICC sending 8 players to the Division I level, including 5 All-Conference players, 2 All-Region VI players, and 1 NJCAA All-American. In a COVID-19 shortened 2020-21 season Morosco again established the Pirates as one of the toughest outs in the KJCCC going 14-9 including a thrilling 70-67 over eventual National Champion Coffeyville CC who was 13-0 and ranked #2 in the NJCAA at the time. In his first year, Morosco led the Pirates to an overall record of 23-9 matching the highest win total for the program since the 2010-11 season and advancing to the Region VI Quarterfinals in Dodge City, KS. Pirate standouts Demetric Horton, Jaden McClanahan and Sam’I Roe would all go on to receive All-Conference Honors. Morosco supercharged the ICC offense averaging 91 points per game while boasting six different Pirates who averaged double figures. The Pirates also reestablished their pipeline to the NCAA Division I level sending six Pirates to the highest level of college basketball. Academically, the Pirates were also a success in Morosco’s first year, finishing with a team GPA of 3.1.

At Barry University, Morosco served as the staff’s only full time assistant where he led the program in recruiting, player development, scouting and game planning. Morosco’s tutelage proved invaluable as the Buccaneers reached as high as #12 in the National Division II rankings, finished 4th in the Sunshine State Conference and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament. Morosco was also greatly influential in the development of Daniel Mortensen and Tylan Birts who were awarded 2nd-Team All SSC Conference and SSC All-Newcomer team, respectively. Morosco helped lead the Buccaneers to an 18-11 record, building an identity around hardnosed defense. The Bucs held opponents to an impressive 39 percent shooting in 2018-19. The Bucs ranked first in the Sunshine State Conference in that category and 15th nationally. Barry also held opponents to 32 percent shooting behind-the-arc, topping the conference ranks and finishing 23rd in the in the country. For his efforts, Morosco has become highly respected from his peers and was ranked the #2 Division II Assistant Coach in the Southeast. The ranking panel described Morosco as: “He has already worked, DI, DII, and JUCO. At the JUCO level, He helped lead EFSC to their best winning percentage in program history, a national third place ranking, and the NJCAA Final Four. They led the nation in rebounding margin, second in FG% defense. ‘They’ being the numerous players he developed to all-conference status.” Prior to Barry University, Morosco coached at Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne, FL. He helped lead the Titans to a 30-5 season, the best winning percentage in program history. EFSC finished third in the nation after reaching the NJCAA Final Four. The Titans led the nation in rebounding margin and were second in field goal percentage defense. They put six players on the all-conference team, including four on the first team. Ahmed Ali was named the conference player of the year.

obby Naubert enters his first season as an assistant coach for Garden City. He comes to Kansas after spending the last year at Iowa Western Community College where he served as the staff’s only full-time assistant. His program responsibilities included recruiting, player development, scouting, game planning, and player academics. During his one year, Naubert helped to guide the Reivers to a 4th place finish in the ICCAC. Naubert was instrumental in developing two All-Region players Roland McCoy and Dewayne Vass. Noteworthy was his prominence in academic guidance as the team established a new team standard with a GPA of 3.38; good enough to finish 6th nationally with 6 NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Previously, before joining the staff, Naubert was in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan where he served as Central Michigan’s men’s basketball program as the Director of Basketball Operations since September of 2018. PRESEASON
NOTEBOOK Ashton McCorry never envisioned herself going to a Junior College. Raised in Wichita, KS, she was coached by her father, Evan, who runs Next Level Eclipse. She played volleyball, soccer, and basketball at a prestigious private school and always excelled both on the floor and in the classroom. She was named a Kansas Coach’s Association All-Star and made the All-State second team as a senior. But things have a funny way of working themselves out. After graduating from high school in 2018, she signed to play basketball at Pittsburg State where she redshirted her first season. With the 2019-20 campaign basically being wiped away, McCorry finally got her chance last year, suiting up in 28 games-averaging just under three points and three rebounds. But she never reached her potential, thanks to a multitude of injuries that forced her to rethink her future. “There were times where it was very frustrating,” she said. “Injuries take a toll, and that’s where I was at Pitt State.”
McCorry decided to transfer out and really wasn’t sure where her basketball future would take her. In stepped Antwain Scales, who knew McCorry better than anyone. During his time at Wichita South, a program he guided to four straight 6A state titles, he was more infamously known for the game plans he designed to shut down McCorry. And they worked, every single time. “We hated playing them because he knew the perfect game plan to stop me,” McCorry added. “He knew every move I was going to make before I made it.” Once McCorry left Pittsburg State, Scales got a phone call. He knew Evan and Becky, Ashton’s mother, and he offered their daughter a chance to play at Garden City. There was also a local connection being that Becky had family that lived in Southwest Kansas. The deal was done shortly after that. “He (Scales) wants the best for his players,” McCorry said. “He is hard on us, but
we know he cares. We know he is trying to push us to new heights. Did I ever see myself coming to a Junior College? No. But, I need to make the most of this opportunity.” McCorry is one of a handful of new players joining this year’s squad. Derryana Cobbins, an honor roll student and firstteam Ark Valley Chisholm Trail Selection at Derby, who averaged 8.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game as a senior, inked a National Letter of Intent over the summer. She helped lead the Panthers to a pair of substate titles, which included a 21-2 finish during the 2019-20 season. That incredible campaign happened right in the middle of the global pandemic, which eventually forced officials with the Kansas High School Activities Association to cancel the state tournament. To add more shooting, Scales signed Jersey Mayfield, who was the Valedictorian at National Christian Academy in Fort Washington, MD. where she averaged over 20 points per game. He also added Dayshawna Carter, a 5-6 guard out of South Shore High School in Brooklyn, NY. The freshman, who began her basketball career in New York City before moving to Brooklyn for her final two prep seasons, led the Vikings to a 22-2 record during the 2019-20 season, which included a pair of playoff victories over Francis Lewis and Summit Academy. Scales then worked on his front line, bolstering his depth with local product Keyhana Turner, a stretch four with the ability to shoot and work in the post. Sprinkle in Desiree Smith, a 6-2 freshman from Fayetteville, NC. whose brother, Dennis was a first-round pick of the Dallas Mavericks in 2017 who now plays for the Portland Trail Blazers, and Garden City has the potential to be as versatile as anyone.

Smith was a rebounding machine in high school, averaging a double-double both her junior and senior seasons at Trinity Christian. As an 11th grader, she tallied 10.4 points and 11.8 boards, leading the Crusaders to a 22-3 mark. “I have tremendous passion and energy for the game of basketball,” Scales said. “Those are the key elements for building success. Educating, training, and developing young players for sports and life are truly the dynamics of why we are driven to succeed.”

team. She posted three double-doubles. “We return five players from last year’s team,” Scales explained. “Their positive energy and enthusiasm is infectious to our new players, which makes a great learning environment and culture for
Those new players join an already strong core. Kealani Neves, an All-Jayhawk West honorable mention last season who averaged 8.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, scored in double figures eight times including a season-best 20 points in a 56-52 loss to Hutchinson on March 6. That same game, she drilled a career-high five 3’s. Handling the point-guard duties will be Alexis Smith, the transfer from Colby, who played in 21 games off the bench for Scales during the 2020-21 campaign. She posted a season-high eight points vs. Allen on Feb. 20. Up front, Donetria McGee, who enters her third season in Garden City, was one of the most consistent players during the abbreviated spring schedule. The 2019-20 conference defensive player of the year, started 22 games and averaged 9.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. She reached double figures 10 times including a 20-point outing on opening night vs. Cowley, a dramatic 7170 victory in Arkansas City. Also back is Britney Mapang, another Colby transfer who is arguably one of Scales’ best defensive players. Justis Odom, who recently signed with Texas A&M Corpus Christi, is back to man the middle. The sophomore started all 21 games in the spring, averaging 7.4 points and 6.8 rebounds, landing on the All-Jayhawk West
what we are building here at Garden City.” In addition to his recruiting efforts, Scales overhauled his coaching staff, bringing in former Wyoming player Daley Handy, who played for her father at Maize High School, and Junior College veteran, Brad Zinn. Zinn spent last season at Salem University and before that was the recruiting coordinator at Highland, helping lead the Scotties to an 80-10 overall record with a third-place finish in the NJCAA Tournament. “Our new coaching staff has quickly made a positive impact in every phase of our program,” Scales said. “Coach Zinn and Coach Handy have instantly connected with our players. Our players have a tremendous respect for our coaches and the positive learning platform that they provide.” And that staff will be challenged right off

That’s followed up with a home date with Coffeyville and a trip to Independence, a national tournament qualifier from last season and one of the favorites to win the conference. They will face off with Landon Steele and Dodge City on Dec. 4 and close out the first semester on Monday, Dec. 13 at Cowley. “I am excited for this upcoming season,” Scales mentioned. “Although we made an immediate impact in Region 6 of the Jayhawk conference, our goal is winning a national championship. With the results from last season our mentality has been unfinished business. We strive to make Garden City one of the top women’s basketball programs in the country. We have an extremely talented team with the ability to be playing our best basketball in March.”

Scales’ resume is impressive to say the least. He spent seven illustrious seasons as the Head Girls Coach at Wichita South High School. There, he turned a program that had won just two games in three seasons prior to his arrival, into an absolute juggernaut. He compiled a record of 152-18 (.894) while leading the Titans to four straight 6A state championships-becoming the first program in history to accomplish that feat. During that stretch, Wichita South won 53 straight games before that streak ended in the 2017 state quarterfinals with a loss to Wichita West. Much to the surprise of many, Scales left Wichita South following the 2017 campaign to take the reigns at Colby Community College. The Trojans finished 5-26 in 2017-2018 and won only three games the year before that. They
[ 79 ]
lost 23 straight contests in 2016-2017 while dropping 27 straight conference games. In his first season, Colby finished 8-22. But in year two, the Trojans turned a major corner, winning 19 games while posting a winning record for the first time since 2006. They began the year 11-1, their best start since 2003-2004 under Tom Stephens. Scales originally signed to play football at Garden City back in the mid 90’s under Bob Larson before leaving to go back to Wichita. During his high school, Scales won state titles playing for Steve Eck at Wichita South before transferring to Wichita Heights to close out his prep career.

Before taking on the lead roll, Ruda served as the interim President since the summer of 2018. Dr. Ruda has been a part of Garden City Community College for more than two decades, most recently serving as the vice president of instruction and student services. He began his tenure as a counselor before being named Director of Counseling in 2003. From there, Dr. Ruda held numerous leadership roles on campus including Athletic Director. Dr. Ruda is also very active in our Southwest Kansas community, where he volunteers on the United School District 363 Holcomb school board and the Board of the Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce. He participates in the Garden City Rotary Club and sits as an exofficio member of the Garden City Community College Endowment Association Board. Dr. Ruda completed his Doctorate in Community College Leadership through the Rouche Graduate Center at National American University in 2018. He also earned a Master of Science in Counseling and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, both at Fort Hays State University.
Dr. Ruda and his wife, Amanda, have three daughters in middle and high school—Madi, Nicole, and Malia, all of whom attend school in Holcomb. When Dr. Ruda entered the Presidential role at Garden City Community College, he brought with him a renewed focus on student-centered and value driven decision making at the faculty, staff, and administrative levels. Dr. Ruda himself exemplifies the “BroncBUSTER” values, as they are called on campus. He is a servant leader, is a very relatable individual, and his passion for student success permeates the entire campus at GCCC.
