“Gracious Gals Win; The Underestimated Strength of Kindness”

We’ll explore the roots of where this intrinsically false notion got started, how being nice is one of the most crucial business strengths today and explore ways to ensure our kindness is never mistaken for a lack of assertiveness

How mindfulness and self-compassion can strengthen our inner resources to manage stress

The Practice:

Whenever you are feeling stressed or discouraged, purposefully touch yourself gently, as you would reassure a friend. You might pat yourself on the shoulder, hold your own hand, use one hand to clasp or pat the opposite upper arm, put your hand over your heart, or if you are in a private space, hug yourself Silently say the three short phrases from this exercise, Mindful Self-Compassion Break

OhioHealth

·The first phrases is something like this “This is a moment of suffering I’m having a hard time right now ” This brings mindfulness to the present moment, a recognition of what is happening right now

·The second phrase is, “It is not abnormal to feel this way. This is part of being human. ”This widens our awareness into the recognition that suffering is part of the life of every person, every living being, without exception. ·The third phrase calls up kindness for yourself, using words you might use with a friend or a hurt child. “I’m here for you. I care about you.”

Brief guided self-compassion practices, including the self-compassion break, can be found in the Practices section on Dr Kristen Neff’s website, www self-compassion org

Reminding Yourself:

Post notes saying “MSC” or just “self-compassion” in several places where you will see them during the day: on your bathroom mirror, at the table where you eat breakfast, on the dashboard of your car, on your computer screen back home or at work, on your refrigerator door, or any place you might find yourself feeling overwhelmed and distressed.

Jennifer has over 30 years of diverse experience as a social worker. Prior to joining OhioHealth Employee Assistance & Mindfulness Program, Jennifer worked at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Adolescent Medicine for 11 years providing counseling and intervention for adolescents and young adults with substance use concerns. My passion is to educate and teach how Mindfulness can support individuals in their own health and well-being. Outside of work, Jennifer enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, reading, spending time in nature, hiking, kayaking and most water activities.

“Our Future Female Leaders” “Our Future Female Leaders”

Vickie Thompson-Sandy, CEO of The Buckeye Ranch, a local nonprofit that serves children, youth, and families facing trauma and mental health challenges, will share with you how Ohio’s youth, especially females, are faring with their own mental health and social emotional well-being

As leaders it is our responsibility to mentor and coach those who come behind us Specifically, as female leaders it is imperative that we empower and support other female leaders in our companies These leaders face challenges as primary caregivers in our community – especially when they are focused on the challenges that their children are facing

Learn how this impacts your own employees and their ability to perform and how you, as leaders can not only support your employees, but empower the future female employees in our community – today’s youth

About Vickie-Thompson Sandy About Vickie-Thompson Sandy

Coming from a family that taught possibility rather than limitation, Vickie Thompson-Sandy has built a career in health and human services and quickly ascended to leadership roles within the not for profit sector. As a leader in non-profit, Vickie has centered her work on children and their families believing that communities are healthier when children are able to reach their full potential and remain within their family of origin; having services focused on keeping children not only safe in their own home, but better off because the child welfare agency came alongside them

(248)-752-5875

In May 2019, Vickie joined The Buckeye Ranch in Grove City, as their first female President and CEO The Buckeye Ranch is a not-for-profit organization treating children who have experienced trauma and have behavioral health challenges As the fourth CEO in the 61 years of serving Ohio, The Buckeye Ranch has a robust continuum of services centered on three areas of focus –Child Welfare, Behavioral Health, and Educational Services. With multiple locations across Ohio, the agency serves almost 5,000 children annually through community-based services, day treatment, Transitional Aged Youth, child welfare services to kinship & foster care services, and residential treatment. In the first year in Ohio, Vickie has completed a strategic plan, reorganized three governance boards into one board of directors, and shifted the continuum of care structure to better integrate services for those served by The Buckeye Ranch. In 2023, she will lead a $35M campus expansion in Grove City in a partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
