From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free. You ever wonder what really happens under apartheid occupation. Here is more information on the Israeli occupation and how it affects the global food system. The problem is Israel, the injustices and crimes they commit everyday. To future generations and the food system native to the land. This paper falls under a few categories war/ political instability, climate change, lack of resources and many more. I chose to write about this topic because so many people don’t know what is happening in Palestinian land occupied by Israel. This is to educate those who do not know. I have spent many years learning about the topic. This paper is to shine light on the problem that is Israel. The state of Israel is a threat to global food system for 3 reasons. The first being it is changing the environment of the land by growing plants that are not native to the land. This is causing the climate and the land itself to change faster than it's supposed too. For every non-native plant that’s growing on the land it changes the air and exposes it to more CO2. The ppm which is part per million, usually used when talking about CO2. The CO2 ppm for Palestine has raised ever since the state of Israel was created. The second reason being, when the Israeli government builds military bases and buildings on fields were food grew, the producers and consumers are more limited to what they can buy and sell. It is more harder for the producers to bounce back from this bust. Is it also leaving the land contaminated from the building, so the future generations can’t grow crops. The third reason is the Israeli government are killing off future producers, farmers and consumers. 95% of water is not drinkable and that is only in Palestinian land. 45% of Palestinians are unemployed and the ones that do have jobs are getting underpaid. Over 2 million were denied movement to another country or to the fields they own. 46% of children suffer from acute anemia. Over 50% express no point to live and over 50% can’t get an education because the schools were closed down, or too far away, and unsafe to attend. That’s what the apartheid state of Israel does to the future generation, they are one of the biggest threats to the food system. The lines of Jewish settlements and the Apartheid wall is similar to the enclosure done in England and Wales. Prior to the enclosures done in England, England labeled land as “common” or “waste” or not in use. The monarchy in England passed the enclosure act, drew lines and broke the land up and gave it to the wealthy, leaving the “poor” without land, and causing a migration the America’s. In the late 1940’s Israel started breaking up land and making Jewish settlements, forcing people who owned the land without a home, land or sustainability. Leaving them to migrate west, to countries like Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia and America. In Empires of Food state “treasuries continue to subsidize irrigated olive groves in Syria and Palestine, while olive groves in Europe sank into wilderness.” In Palestine and some land in Syria occupied by Israel, olive trees that are native to the land get up rooted and switched out for non-native trees. Causing the environment to change and leaving the people limited one more food source. Israel ships the olive trees to Europe for trade, when olive trees were transported to Europe it also changed the environment and what could grow next to those olive trees. It also hurts the people who cultivated them where they’re native, for four reasons. Being one less food resource, limited jobs, environmental change, and cultural displacement.
In England they encouraged poor people to travel to the “new world” and settle there. In Israel you see something similar according. In the late 1800’s European countries showed hate towards the native Jewish population, forcing some of the population to leave the land because of hate crimes. The British helped European Jews migrate to the Middle East and helped them colonize Palestine, for a few reasons. At the time the British were colonizing India and needed a middle point for weapons and other supplies. Till this day Britain and America station military bases in Palestinian land illegally occupied by Israel, by doing that Britain, America and other European dominated countries are closer to the Middle East. There is many ways we can learn from history, one being not to colonize other countries or people. We seen what it can do people and their futures. If the apartheid state of Israel never happened Palestinians economy would be bombing, I know this because Palestinian agriculture was very strong and well thought out, their methods were seen copied all over the Middle East, Asia and Africa for growing chickpeas, olives and many more. Palestine produced many crafts and products for the Middle East and Asia. Such as dresses, pots, and many other things. “Due to difficult economic situation and restrictions on movement and access, trade with the EU is very limited” says European Commission. In many other cases you see these types of things happening, the UN can easily stop apartheid states like Israel from happening and causing the world to miss out on opportunities and methods Palestinian people have to offer. The big picture problem is the State of Israel. The apartheid state is a problem because it enslaves people that are native to the land which are Palestinians. The apartheid causes displacements physically, emotionally and culturally. In the UN’s sustainable development goals they state “No poverty, Zero hunger, Good health and Well being, Quality education, Clean water, Affordable energy, Decent work and Economic growth, and etc.” The apartheid state of Israel does not work toward these goals. Three things we can do to change that is knocking down the apartheid wall, allowing Palestinians to come back in the land they’re native too, and for the state of Israel to pay reparations to the Palestinian people, and homes, business that were destroyed by the Israel Offense forces (IOF). You can help stop the siege on Gaza, the illegal occupation over Palestine, I hope you learned something new about the problem which is Israel. Next time you talk about this issue you know a little bit more and hopefully inform other.
