DIVISION III: Photography

Color Wheel

Class 1 Deep Blue Sea Color 4 Entries

A horizontal image of a body of water. An image that must be printed on canvas that is hand-stretched on a wood frame. The image must be printed on canvas, then wrapped on a 1.5” wooden stretcher frame. Please contact division chair for questions.

This is an educational component of the show designed to inform the public about the dangers of microplastics in our oceans and other bodies of water. We hope to show how people can help the environment and “heal” our waters by employing a few minor changes in their daily lives. Class 2 Paint the Town Red Color 4 Entries

An image taken at night using creative techniques. Requires a 4” x 6” of the original image or composite, if more than one image, to be hung next to the entry after judging.

Creative techniques: The use of manipulation or alteration in any stage of the photographic process to achieve an effect significantly different from the original photograph. All representational images in a manipulated or creative technique photo must be the work of the photographer. Non-representational enhancements such as the addition of purchased textures are allowed.

A color splash image featuring spring. Plant material required.

Color Splash: (spot color, selective color) is the selective use of color(s) in an otherwise gray scale image. It is not a monochrome.

Class 4 In Graphic Color Color 4 Entries

An image incorporating an architectural or design element found at the Contemporary Arts Museum campus. Plant material not required.

Class 5 Absence of Color Black & White 4 Entries

A black and white image depicting a scene in nature. Plant material required.

Note: Photography has a registration form and an entry form. Entry form is to be submitted with the entry attached to the photograph. Forms are located on pages 38 and 40.

Guidelines Chasing Rainbows

1. Please carefully read and follow the GCA Rules, General Information and the Timetable for Exhibitors.

2. Registration opens to GCH members on September 20, 2021 and to all other GCA club members on October 4, 2021. Registration forms should be emailed/mailed to Wendy Askew at texaskew2@aol.com, 4150 Southwestern St., Houston, Texas 77005 by January 24, 2022.

Entries will be accepted in the order postmarked or time-stamped.

Entrants will be notified by the division chair of their inclusion in classes.

3. Classes 2 and 3 have an entry fee of $20, payable by check to The

Garden Club of Houston, due at time of registration.

4. Exhibitors are permitted only one exhibit in each class, but may enter more than one class. All participants must be listed on the entry card.

5. Mounts will be provided to the exhibitor upon registration.

6. If forced to withdraw, the exhibitor must notify the division chair and find a substitute unless there is a waiting list for the class. Mounts, if provided, must be returned to the division chair immediately following the show.

7. All plant material used must be dried - this includes flowers, foliage, seeds, pods, nuts (in or out of shells), vegetables, twigs, vines, reeds, etc. Only plant material, mechanics and their surface treatments (i.e. paints, nail polishes, varnishes, waxes, etc.) are permitted. Artificial, endangered, and locally invasive plant material may not be used.

8. Figural forms must be assembled or judiciously carved by the exhibitor.

Any plant material may be cut, incised or shaped to enhance artistic effect.
