By Christa Crittendon, Nick Kendall, Abi Evitts, Staff Writers Featuring local businesses that contribute to our community and invest in the future of our students.

Great Ambitions: School of Cosmetology, located in the Plaza of Mayfield, contributed to the Graves County High School Eagle’s Eye newspaper staff by purchasing ads and donating to our program. We would like to show our appreciation for our supporters, for we would not be able to have this opportunity without the support of local businesses like Great Ambitions. Owner Amanda Morris has worked day and night to build her business from the ground up. She works hard for her business to meet the needs of Mayfield’s beauty desire. “Whether you want a new career as a cosmetologist, an esthetician, nail technician, or a jr instructor, we’ll guide and encourage while helping you develop the necessary skills to realize your dreams.

Morris expresses that Great Ambitions contributes to the community, “by making Mayfield feel beautiful in their own enhanced beauty with a budget friendly price.” With prom right around the corner, GCHS’ Eagle’s Eye encourages you to visit the School of Cosmetology to prep. From makeup to face masks and hair coloring to fake nails, Great Ambitions is the place to go at a price friendly to everyone.

Carr’s Steak House has been an advertising sponsor for the GCHS Eagle’s Eye for several years. Carr’s was recently named the National Restaurant Association’s Neighbor Award Winner. Carr’s contributes to our community in a variety of ways by helping schools and others with fundraisers. During football season on Monday nights, the GCHS football club assists Carr’s and receives 10% of what they make that night. Carr’s Steak House also has an event called “Make a Bowl,” where people come in and pay to make these beautiful bowls. They are then filled with food and given to the less fortunate. Carr’s Steak House loves helping out the community and our local schools, and we truly appreciate that. Pictured: Kerri Walker (GC), Carr’s Employee Adrian Sherrill, and Arriona Curtis (GC).

The newspaper is sponsored by multiple businesses through the county, and we would like to thank you for helping support our school. Owner, Donnie Walker tells us more behind why he chose to support our school, “I’ve purchased ads for the past few years, and I’ve never been disappointed with it. I found this a great way to get my business name out, and helping to get more customers.” Walker then tells a little more about his occupation: “We try our best to please every person we have worked for, and if we don’t meet their expectations then we’re more than welcome to help again. We’ve helped provide paper for the schools, and help provide when lumber is needed. By the amount of recognition I’ve receive by placing an ad in the paper, it’s shown me that this is one of the easiest and most beneficial ways to expand my business.” Thank you for sponsoring our paper.

If you’ve ever been through Mayfield, you’ve immediately notice the abundance of small shops and local businesses that scatter the Pearl of the Purchase. They provide insight to the character and charm of our small town. Gilliam Thompson Furniture has been a staple to the Mayfield area for 59 years. Opened in 1959 by Mr. Gilliam Thompson, the company has prioritized comm -unity and family based values. Their focus on maintaining a personal relationship with their customer base has helped them to earn a steady reputation as the most popular furniture store in the area. In an interview with members of Gilliam Thompson staff, they discussed how the sense of community in the area is what not only keeps the business running, but what makes the business worth running in the first place. Owner Phil Thompson said, “It’s (Mayfield) home, y’know? It’s more of a family oriented atmosphere, more so than bigger cities. It’s local, everybody knows everybody. It’s a good place and a good reason to do business here.” On behalf of the entirety of the GCHS Eagles Eye Staff, we would like to thank Gilliam Thompson for their endless support of both the local school districts and the city of Mayfield. GCHS Eagles Eye is sending a big “Thank you” to the Graves County Public Library for its generous sponsorship of GCHS Eagle’s Eye. Dina Shwinn, Director of the Public Library, says they were excited for the opportunity to help our public school because they “think it’s very important to support the community, especially the schools and kids. We want to attract kids of all ages to the library. I think your school newspaper is a great way to do that.” Not only does the public library strive to help public schools and kids of all ages, they also aim to help underprivileged families and adults gain access to free education and information. The library provides the public with “free access to many things people could potentially not have at home, like the internet,” Shwinn says. The library also provides programs like “Hoopla” and “KY Libraries Unbound” which give those who have library cards access to Ebooks, music, movies, etc. We have an online educational program on a wide range of subjects in which each course lasts 6 weeks.

The Public Library helps educate the public, aimed toward people who might otherwise not be able to gain access to educational materials. In a time when it is becoming easier for those who can afford internet to gain information, and harder for people in poverty to access education, we want to thank the public library for playing a vital role in our community.
