Alec McClain, a senior at Graves County, will be recognized for his community service efforts at the FBLA national conference on June 29- July 2 in Anaheim, California. To receive this award the recipient must complete 50, 200, and then 500 hours of community service throughout his or her high school career. In the summer, McClain assisted teachers and worked back to school night at Central Elementa-

A select few Graves County High School students have received this prestigous award in the past. McClain isn’t doing this for the award or recognition, however. “I’m very excited that I had the opportunity to give so much to others and work to improve my community.” McClain is one of the eighty qualifiers in the United States to receive this achievement.

Possible school calendar changes Mackenzie Bell Staff Writer
Graves County High School has had many changes this year, with new floors and music playing constantly in the bathrooms being a prime example. However, the Kentucky Senate has passed legislation that offers an incentive to school districts to voluntarily push back the start of the school year to late August. Under the terms of the bill that passed, districts that don’t resume classes at least until the Monday closest to Aug. 26 would not have to meet the state’s 170-day requirement. The schools’ would still have to meet the 1,062-hour requirement. Matthew Madding, the principal of Graves County High School, had an opinion on the matter. “I think...if all the other schools in the district switched over to that, then we’d have to as well.” Principal Madding said. When questioned about the breaks students receive, (fall, spring, Christmas, and summer) Mad-

the Graves County School District typically receives, the ending date could be pushed back even further. Whether you are for or against the new bill, the end goal is still the same. Each student will progress through each year, regardless of the time frame it happens in.

Graves County High School hosts 2017 prom fashion show
Abigail Evitts Staff Writer Anne’s Bridals put on this year’s GCHS prom fashion show in order to bring awareness to their wide variety of elegant dresses not only for prom, but for a 15th birthday celebration of Latin American roots known as a Quinceañera. Students modeled the dresses and were escorted by the guy of their choice, whether
a boyfriend or a classmate. Classes who brought a dollar per person were able to watch the show that was put on twice, once during first block and again in second block. The prom fashion show wasn’t all serious, participants in drama, choir, leadership, and more helped the show appeal to the whole audience. Tanner McAlpin and Preston Puckett announced the names and specialty dresses as the models came out. The boys also put on a surprise comedy bit that sent the audience into uncontrollable laughter.

O P I N I O N
Health benifits found from fashion statement Savannah Morales Staff Writer Back in 2015-2016, the public had discovered that a certain piercing has relieved migraines and anxiety of those who suffered from them. This piercing is called a daith piercing. The daith piercing is located on the curved, inner cartilage of the ear that goes through a pressure (or acupuncture) point. When the person feels a migraine or anxiety coming on, all they have to do is lightly wiggle, tap, or move the piercing and it will miraculously go away. Many people have vowed that this piercing has done miraculous things for them, but many have been skeptical including myself. Chronic migraines are genetically passed through my family and I have unfortunately inherit them. I have suffered from chronic migraines since the beginning
When most people think of Valentines Day they think of love. When I think of Valentines Day I think of loneliness. Valentines is just another day of the year that all the single people are forced to see couples being all lovey dovey, just a little more than they normal are. In my opinion, the only good thing about Valentines Day is all the chocolate that goes on sale the day after. Valentines is just another holiday that’s marketed by companies in order to raise their profits and have people convinced that they have to buy their significant other something in order to
in a second. Another former student of GCHS also has the daith piercing. According to April Boyd, “The piercing helped a lot with my headaches. It helped a little with my anxiety. I wasn’t having as bad of panic attacks after getting the piercing. I recommend the piercing for anyone with migraines and anxiety. It works differently for people, but it still helps.” Overall, I recommend the daith piercing to anyone who is willing to try it. However, I must remind everyone that this piercing may not work for some people, so if you dislike piercings I would not recommend it. To those who want to do, but are afraid that it will not help, you will never known until you try.

What’s with the boombox backpacks? Valencia Thron Staff Writer Okay, I get it. Everybody wants to stand out and be cool. Especially in a school like this. Some change their hair, others where all black and chain, and most just decide to act out. However there is one group of people that I failed to mention: The dreadful kids with the backpack speakers. Like I said, I understand wanting to stand out and be cool. I definitely get that. But blaring music out of
your speakers walking down the middle of the hallways is not the way to do it. Not only is it loud and disruptive, but people are trying to get to class. Seriously, we only have five minutes. We just want to walk peacefully and calmly to a class we’ve probably been dreading all day. And before you say, “Well maybe the music can cheer you up.” It can’t. We’re teenagers, we have our own earbuds (which these people should be using.). If we wanted to escape our problems lis-
tening to music, we can do it ourselves. Thanks for the offer, though. Also, it’s five minutes. Not to mention these “backpack speaker kids” are usually the ones who clog up the hallways, effectively making people late to class. I’m pretty sure “I got stuck in the hallway because some kid was blaring Black Beatles and wouldn’t move” isn’t an acceptable excuse. What’s worse is when people get agitated when you ask them to turn off their music. The
Elizabeth Rhea Staff Writer There is not much of a barrier on what technology has been able to accomplish. Mental health has been gradually arising since 2014. What if technology could help? Technology that would remind you to take care of yourself? To help with everyday task and emotional situations. Well the reason for this article is a popular Otome game, Mystic Messenger. Now, not many people will understand, so I will explain. This is not a dating sim. To begin, there are six characters are fully developed with personalities and different quirks. Jumin Han is a business man that is utterly obsessed with cats. Zen is a popular musician and actor that is slightly narcissistic. Lucile, nicknamed 707, is a hacker that is very mainstream. Yoosung is a childish gamer in college who hasn’t really found what he wants to do with his life. A man who goes by V, runs the charity company after his girlfriend passed away. Then there is the only girl, Jaehee Kang, Jumin’s assistant that is very reserved. These characters
constantly remind you to eat and take care of yourself. The player normally gets very attached to the characters which is arguably bad/good for your health. As you play through, the game’s story line is revealed. It starts as a user getting a message from an Unknown contact who gives you directions to an apartment. When you enter the apartment you start talking to the 6 characters online. As the user you get recruited to join RFA, Rika’s Fundraising Association. The user’s main objective is to email back guest for a big fundraising party. I have depression and anxiety, I’ve had the app for 6 days. Mentally, you make connections with the six characters they give you. I’ve gotten happier every time the app sends me a text through the characters. You get a feeling of being cared for when they ask if you’ve eaten yet. If you tell them you haven’t eaten they tell you to eat soon and take care of yourself. They remind you to take it easy. They even call you to make sure you’re okay. If the app was developed into a self
help app for all sexes it would change the world. I believe if one app that’s more catered to girls can change the outlook of thousands of users, I could only imagine if they purposely try. It would be the most positive impact in all ages lives. The point being, what if someone harnessed this technology and used it for phycological help? The person could create their own character with constant reminders to eat, encouragement, medicine, and can form a healthy relationship to become a better person. Potentially the user could even pick from multiple different voices. There could be thousands of characters that could easily shape to the individuals personality. Your personal self help app. It could help with anxiety, depression, suicide, and multiple other mental conditions. Can this really help?
Do apps have the potential to help those with mental health issues?

of 2014 and anxiety since February of 2015. I have had severely painful migraines since then. I have been prescribed every medication created for migraines, but none have worked whatsoever. However, since the beginning of the school year they have become increasingly worse and affected my school life, so I decided to try this piercing out. I have had the piercing for a full week now and the results have been incredible. I have not have a single migraine or anxiety attack since then. To be more specific, I have been keeping track and so far in one week it has prevented 20 migraines and 2 anxiety attacks. When I went into the (very sanitary) piercing and tattoo shop, I had a severe migraine, but as soon as the needle was through my ear it went away
prove their love for them. Valentines shouldn’t be a holiday that focuses on couples; it should be a holiday that focuses on love in general. Whether that’s love between couples, family, or friends. usual response is, “You know you like it.” No. I don’t want to hear Juju on that Beat or Trap Queen assaulting my eardrums while I’m just trying to go to chemistry. Please don’t be one of those people and save a high schooler’s sanity: just stick with earbuds.

Streaming Vs. Cable Mackenzie Bell and Lexi Cope Staff writer With the rise in popularity of streaming sites, cable networks are getting a run for their money. Most streaming sites cost from around $7.99 to $11.99 while cable can cost as much as $100 monthly. Not only does streaming cost less, but there’s little-to-no waiting time between episodes. This divide has also strained the relationship between companies like Netflix and cable networks. The cable networks are becoming more reluctant to share programs with streaming sites. However, it isn’t too much of a problem because original streaming content is doing exceptionally well, so much so that it wouldn’t be surprising if these companies could keep afloat just on that content alone. Primarily, Netflix leads the stream-
ing sites but other competitors such as Hulu and Amazon Prime Video are on the rise. Netflix has produced a bevy of hit shows such as Orange Is The New Black (receiving an 8.3 out of 10 stars from Imdb. com) and Jessica Jones (receiving a very similar score of 8.2), and is projected to spend 6 billion dollars
in production of original content in 2017, according to cnbc.com. Given that these streaming sites abide by different rules than public television, there is also more creative freedom in producing an original series as opposed to cable. For example, in episode one of season one of Black Mirror (a Netflix original
series) the main character does unspeakable things to an animal. On cable television, most networks would not showcase that on air. It doesn’t stop there. Censoring of swear words is nonexistent as well, staying true to the script. If you’re going to choose between streaming and cable you’re going to be missing out on something, whether it be original shows or the news. There is always going to be defining differences because the companies’ product is based on viewer response. Cable networks provide weekly episodes and they broadcast the local news as well as national news. Streaming creates new subject matter in today’s entertainment industry. But the bottom line is, you’re bound to find something you’ll like.
Anticipated Albums of The Year Cory Mouser Opinion Editor
Every year more and more music is released and new artist emerge and still our hearts. The music scene is a diverse pool of creative minds. Here is a list of 2 of my favorite artists and their highly anticipated upcoming releases. 1. Zara Larsson (So Good)- So Good is the international debut album by Zara Larsson which will be released on March 17 via Epic Records and TEN Music Group. The reason this album is on my list of anticipated albums is because of how many producers Zara has worked with. At the beginning of her teasing this album she said each song will be produced by a different producer. Another reason is because of how diverse the sound of the album should be. Zara has said in a interview that the album lays in the wide spectrum of pop music with dance-y high energy songs to ballads to songs with trap influenced beats and anything in between.
2. Noah Cyrus (NC17)- NC-17 is the highly anticipated album, due later this year, by American singer-songwriter, and sister of Miley Cyrus, Noah Cyrus. As of now, the only taste of the album that we have got is her debut single Make Me (Cry) and an acoustic version of an unreleased song titled Almost Famous. Make Me (Cry) is a quirky soulful ballad.
Top Movies To Watch When You’re Single
Cassandra Kyle Entertainment Editor
While Valentines Day is finally over, not everyone got to spend it with the love of their life. Some of us got to spend it being single and lonely at home. The only good things about Valentine’s Day for singles is all the discount candy you can buy the day after and not having to deal with crowded places. If you plan on being single for next years Valentines or just need something to make you be happy about being single, here are a few movies for you. Heathers is an amazing movie to watch at anytime. Need a reason to be glad that you’re single, this is the movie for you. The movie follows Veronica, a member of the schools most popular group the Heathers despite not agreeing with anything they do. Veronica and her new boyfriend, J.D., accidently kill the group leader and make it look like a suicide. But soon Veronica realizes that J.D. is killing people he doesn’t like on purpose and making it look like suicides. While Veronica faces off with the new group leader of the Heathers, she is also trying to stop J.D. before any more killings happen. While The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement does end with a happy ending and everyone finding love, it also shows that you don’t have to be romantically involved with some one to be happy. The movie follows Mia as she is still in the process of accepting that she is a princess. After graduating college and returning to Genovia, Mia is informed that she must marry within the next month in order to become Queen. Mia’s top suitor, Nicholas Devereaux, is initially only after the crown but after realizing he loves her he quits pursuing her. Mia ends up engaged to Andrew Jacoby, but things between her and Nicholas progress and they both end up falling for each other. On the day of her wedding she calls off the wedding and is granted permission to become Queen without being married. How To Be Single is a movie about four very different women and their journeys with love. The summary of the movie, as said by IMDb, is “There’s a right way to be single, a wrong way to be single, and then...there’s Alice. And Robin. Lucy. Meg. Tom. David. New York City is full of lonely hearts seeking the right match, be it a love connection, a hook-up, or something in the middle. And somewhere between the teasing texts and one-night stands, what these unmarrieds all have in common is the need to learn how to be single in a world filled with ever-evolving definitions of love. Sleeping around in the city that never sleeps was never so much fun.” Blue Valentine is a movie more about falling out of love with someone rather than falling in love. The movie follows the lives of married couple Dean and Cindy as they go from falling in love with each other, to fighting and being unhappy, to finally divorcing. “Dean Pereira and Cindy Heller Pereira are a young, working class married couple - Dean currently working as a painter, and Cindy working as a nurse in a medical clinic - with a young daughter named Frankie. Despite their relatively tender ages, they are both ravaged by the life they’ve eked out together and by the experiences they’ve had leading into their marriage. Dean, a high school drop out, comes from a broken home, where he never really had a mother figure. He never saw himself getting married or having a family despite falling in love at first sight with Cindy. He doesn’t have any professional ambition beyond his current work - which he enjoys since he feels he can knock off a beer at 8 o’clock in the morning without it affecting his work - although Cindy believes he has so much more potential in life. Cindy also comes from a dysfunctional family, with her own mother and father not setting an example of a harmonious married or family life. One of her previous serious relationships was with Bobby Ontario, that relationship which has a profound affect on many aspects of her marriage to Dean. Dean and Cindy head off on an overnight getaway together without Frankie, the getaway which may provide a clearer picture if their marriage can survive its many issues,” is the plot summary of the movie on IMDb’s website. Frozen is a movie that shows that true love isn’t limited to romantic love. It shows that true love can be between family and that you don’t need a man to feel loved. The movie also shows that it takes more than a day to know you’re in love with someone and that having feelings for someone can sometimes get you nearly killed. “Anna, a fearless optimist, sets off on an epic journey - teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven - to find her sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom. From the outside Anna’s sister, Elsa looks poised, regal and reserved, but in reality, she lives in fear as she wrestles with a mighty secret-she was born with the power to create ice and snow. It’s a beautiful ability, but also extremely dangerous. Haunted by the moment her magic nearly killed her younger sister Anna, Elsa has isolated herself, spending every waking minute trying to suppress her growing powers. Her mounting emotions trigger the magic, accidentally setting off an eternal winter that she can’t stop. She fears she’s becoming a monster and that no one, not even her sister, can help her,” is how the movie summary reads on IMDb.
