I
’m Menachem Weis - that’s with one “s” only. I was born in the Windy City, Chicago. When I married my wife Chaya, I headed out west to settle in her hometown, Los Angeles. A great place for a great start.
We explored the palm lined avenues, discussed the future and admired the striking homes. We would compare the differences between Chicago and LA. Sometimes, I would even allow myself to dream of moving back to the heartlands of America. My wife and I both had satisfying jobs and earned enough to begin building our money nest. As our account grew, our home and hearts felt emptier. We waited for a child to fill our sunny apartment with living light. Nine years passed. Until Didi shined in. Didi, our daughter, is named after my mother who passed away of cancer. Her Hebrew name is Adina and her official name is Edith. Didi is her own combination. That should tell you enough about her. With her smile and big girl ideas, our home was bright. When I relaxed after a fulfilling day, I’d pat myself on my back (metaphorically). Things felt under control and safe. I’ll get straight to the story, though. Leukemia. That’s what my life centers around. When Didi was one-and-a-half, she developed a high temperature which didn’t letup even after a few days. We visited the pediatrician. Dr. O’Brian smiled at Didi as the stethoscope tickled her skin. We watched him squeeze Didi’s stomach and his smile settled into a tight line. My wife and I looked at each other, our lips
When life gives you Lemons... becoming tight too. Didi shattered the silence with a loud stubborn cry. From the pediatrician’s office we set out to Children’s Hospital for blood work. I searched my memory for the stories my friends recounted; how pediatricians would send them to the hospital for a teething baby. This was probably not serious either. One at a time, blood droplets dripped into the tube and the countdown for results began. We paced the hallways. I counted the tiles; my wife’s stroking on Didi’s hair became more aggressive as one minute brought another.
in the honey. The closest shul was far away; I couldn’t leave Didi alone. “You have to adapt. This is the situation now and this is what it calls for.” I was talking to myself. As these thoughts went through my mind, the Rabbi from a shul walked in with a shofar in hand and asked if I wanted to hear. Of course I did. As our journey progressed, a gentle pattern emerged, only there for those who wanted to see it. It was Hashem saying, “It seems impossible, but I’ll make it possible.”
After some time the doctor walked into our room. He studied Didi for a few moments, his eyes washed over my wife and me.
We waited nine long years for Didi.
“I’m sorry,” he said, “it’s leukemia.”
And then leukemia.
It was as if the biggest person I’ve ever seen just knocked me to the ground and blew the winds out of me. He was standing with one foot on the ground, the other on my neck, watching me gasp for breath. I’ve never felt so powerless. So helpless. So unprotected.
Nine long days.
I knew what cancer was. I knew how this disease grabs hold and takes a toll on a body. I’d seen that happen to my mother. Now, the doctor says the same monster has grabbed hold of Didi, my mother’s namesake. How will her journey be different?
New reality
One-and-a-half years of blissful reality.
A new reality. It was right after Rosh Hashanah, an ironic time to begin our new way of life. Once a week we packed a bag with food, hope and diapers, with prayers, toys and fear. I would fasten Didi in her car seat; we clicked the seat belts on ourselves and followed the blue “H” signs to an exhausting day of treatment. The day always began with a height and weight check. Then the ‘huggie’ – a kid friendly blood pressure cuff was strapped around her wrist and a thermometer stuck underneath her arm to measure her temperature. I was glad for the consistency.
After Didi was diagnosed we spent nine days in the hospital waiting for the doctors to choose a course of action.
From there we walked to the procedure suite. Decorated like a jungle, it was dubbed the jungle room. Didi learnt very quickly to hate this room despite its camouflage.
The new year, Rosh Hashanah, found me in the children’s ward. I resigned to the fact that this year my Yom Tov would not be spent the ideal way. I gave up on hearing the shofar, the intense davening and the joy of re-dipping Didi’s apple
When the doctors outlined her course for treatment, they operated on Didi to insert a port under her skin. Also known as a central IV, the port allowed for easy and painless access to blood vessels. Unlike what people think,

And then I wondered whether it’s harder to be in pain or to watch your child in pain. Then I would remind myself that this is our new reality; I learned to stop fighting the situation and accept our routine, the pain and the hospital smell. Chaya dropped her job to be with Didi. Until now our insurance was covered through her employer. But even after she gave it up we continued to pay our premiums -out of our pockets- so that Didi could get the best medical care.
Diagnosis of the Heart The first months after Didi was diagnosed were intense. We davened hard, we made sure we did everything right, and that we explored all options.
And what made things bearable was the flexibility of the human heart. It fascinates me how when we find any similarity to another, our hearts form an immediate bond; be it that we both deal with cancer, be it that we share a familial connection or be it that we are both Yidden. I had 40 messages on my voicemail and an overflowing inbox right when Didi was diagnosed. People called to let us know they are here if we need them or if we don’t. A few months into treatment, my brother- inlaw, Tuvye from New York, called me. From his “hello” I could hear he was excited about something. “Listen Menachem. I met this guy, Yoeli Brill, he’s amazing. You have to give him a call,” Tuvye told me. “What is this about?” “It’s about Didi. I’ll send you his number.” “Why would I call just someone I’ve never met?” “Trust me. Give him a call.” I got Mr. Brill’s number, I procrastinated a bit though. Why share my private life with someone who’s almost 3000 miles away? Then the curious part of me surfaced and I figured nothing too bad can come from sharing a struggle with a fellow Yid.
“Huh?” “How much is it out of your pocket? We’ll pay it for you.” Didi’s face came looming in my mind, her bald head and pale skin. Then her face receded and broke out in a feature- transforming smile. Mi keamcha Yisroel. They’re literally here for you. •

I wanted to thank you for all the wonderful things you have done for me so I decided to have a bake sale and lemonade stand this past Sunday to raise money for RCCS. My mommy and daddy will be sending a donation online but enclosed is a $25.00 check from one of my customers. Didi - Age 4
I dialed his number and introduced myself. “We’re here for you.” Mr. Brill’s voice came through the line. What? He must be strange.
When the doctor broke the news to us, I said to her, “Look, I have many questions, some of them I’m not even aware of, but there are two things I trust in. I trust in G-d and I trust in you.” And even when there were times where the fear would make me quiver and the unknown made us immobile, we tried to live by that dictum.
“What do you mean?”
Didi’s diagnosis was a hard punch. You lie beaten to the ground, the world brimming above your disillusioned eyes; you see faces and the sky, the powerful and weak, the child and adult - all

Every week, Didi would get a dosage of chemo through the ‘tubies’ of her port. Every other week, chemotherapy was followed by a spinal tap. Didi was given some medication to make her numb and drowsy. The nurses would roll her up in a ball so her spine would protrude. All I wanted then was to roll up under my cover and shut the world out. But Chaya and I would hold Didi’s hands and soothe her so that she knew that we’re with her. A needle was inserted to remove some fluid for testing and to administer medication into her spine. If Didi squirmed, the process would be drawn out. I would hold my breath until the needle was out. It was eternity.
