The great sages of Klal Yisroel have expounded greatly about the special power of saying “Asher Yatzar” with concentration and devotion. Through this incredible prayer, we can merit full recoveries from illnesses and a long, healthy life. Many stories are related about individuals who experienced astounding salvations in the merit of strengthening their concentration when reciting this blessing. Holy works relate that this auspicious prayer also helps healthy people remain in good health, with no need to ever even visit a doctor or take any form of medication. (Seder Hayom, Kavanas Habrachos)
In the holy Zohar (Eikev 271:2) it is stated that only a blessing which someone answers “Amen” to is considered a “complete blessing”. In order to merit a complete recovery and a healthy life, it is certain that we must be careful to ensure that our blessings should be complete, by having someone respond “Amen” to them.

In the almost 5 years I’ve been here, that title had taken on new meaning with each and every case. If I had to nail it down to one line, I am the grease man; the person who keeps the department running as one fluid unit, enabling our remarkable team of patient advocates, guardians and representatives to carry out their full promise.
So do you get to see the inner workings of daily cases? Absolutely. I get involved personally, and also have a front seat to the inhuman feats our team pulls off on a regular basis. From medical advisory to insurance coordination to facility collaboration, I am amazed anew each time a patient comes through our doors.
This is no easy job. What drew you to the
RCCS battleground? You’re right! This is one of the toughest jobs I know. Some days I feel like I’m carrying the life of the patient’s entire family in my hands… and I am terrified of doing anything less than every last thing in my power. The truth is that my relationship with RCCS began as a recipient. About 10 years ago, when a close family member was diagnosed, I was thrust into the tumult along with the rest of the family. As she went through the lengthy treatment and insurance battle, I came in direct contact with the very same people who are now part of my team. I was simply stunned to amazement by what these selfless RCCS employees were doing. RCCS’s impact rippled across patient, family and all other involved parties. At a time when life was literally turned upside down, when our family was assaulted by a heap of completely foreign clinical terminology, RCCS stepped in to remove the financial burden, offer invaluable guidance, fight things out with the insurance company, and orchestrate a lifesaving medical performance on a national scale.
When did you know you were meant for RCCS? Five years after that saga, RCCS approached me. Though I had seen the
one case up close, this was still a new world and frightening prospect. But my heart said I was meant for this. I had previously been involved with other organizations focused on helping others, and I knew saving lives was the ultimate form of assistance. I also felt indebted to RCCS, and was more than inspired by their people. So I jumped into the deep end…
What does your daily workload look like? Like a whirlwind? (smiles) Since RCCS believes in doing things quietly for the sake of confidentiality and patient dignity, few people realize the scope of our efforts. For instance, I oversee offices in both the US and Israel, which effectively operate as two separate organizations with two fully independent sets of needs, networks, doctors, patients and insurance carriers. The field of cancer treatment is also changing at a rapid pace which demands that my team and I execute on so many great things we are known for—while investing in the latest and greatest findings that may offer patients a better chance at life. In all cases, our goal is to help each patient access
the best treatment for their particular disease. That entails a combination of our four cornerstone services: Insurance Premium Services RCCS’s primary mission is to help patients navigate the complicated maze of insurance and subsidises the hefty cost of insurance premiums. Insurance Advocacy RCCS expedites authorizations, overturns denials and fights with insurance companies to get approved.
With a lot of hands-on advocacy, guidance and support, we ensure the patient and their caregivers are on the same page throughout this impossible journey.
Was there a specific case that moved you recently? That’s a difficult question to answer. Just take any patient under suspicion of cancer, and you soon realize that even the best prognosis is an upheaval of the life the family knew. It always means that life suddenly hits the brakes, and the road ahead looks completely unfamiliar. But if you want to know what recent story brought me tears of joy, that I can answer.
Medical Subsidy Grants The health ramifications are enough to sink any average family, and the financial struggle only exacerbates the sense of helplessness. RCCS provides medical subsidy grants for out of network doctors, deductibles and other unpaid medical balances.
A young man was diagnosed with lung cancer 6 months ago. He was about to have surgery performed by a local doctor, and contacted RCCS for our proverbial ‘blessing’. After reviewing his records we were not confident that this case would do best with immediate surgery; we felt that other forms of treatment prior to surgery would make the surgery less invasive and most importantly offer a better chance at survival.
Medical Direction I wish nothing more than for the world to know nothing of cancer. But when a diagnosis hits, that lack of knowledge throws patients and their families into despair. Our job is to be in the know. All year long, morning to night, our team researches, reviews and verifies all the doctors and institutions that are part of the cancer-treatment community.
To get the case reviewed by another doctor, we needed to get the actual biopsy over to his pathology lab. The patient didn’t have the right coverage for that process to begin immediately... So while working on getting the correct insurance coverage in place, RCCS - through our medical subsidies grant facilitated the full treatment so that it can begin immediately.
It wasn’t easy by any means. We worked on the case right through the night, got the biopsy transferred to the new lab, and expedited an appointment with the doctor. Once he began treatment, we coordinated with his family to handle all the surrounding needs, including transportation, family support, monthly insurance payments and more. It fills my heart with joy to sit here and tell you that the patient completed treatment successfully and had surgery right before Rosh Hashanah. He called me just last night with the news that his postsurgery review came back clean! What chasdei Hashem!
I was simply stunned... what these selfless RCCS employees were doing. With a win like that, do you call it a day? Do you hang up the phone and go to bed? Never! There is no such a thing as time off for our team. While usual diagnoses take time—it begins with a medical suspicion and goes through a confirmation process—some cancer cases are a matter of life and death.
One case that comes to mind is a boy at summer camp who was sent to the emergency room on Friday afternoon. It looked like pneumonia, so they did a workup…which showed some out-of-range counts. The family called into the RCCS 24-hour emergency hotline, and we sprang into action with only hours to the zman. We got in touch with the doctors and arrived at a serious suspicion of acute leukemia. This needs instant testing in an expert institution. So we contacted one of the world’s leading experts in AML and got the records over to her. As soon as she confirmed our suspicions, we began working on a transfer. The patient’s lungs were in bad condition and he needed a respirator. We secured an ICU bed available and lined up the right medical team to coordinate with the hospital team. We worked straight into Shabbos and throughout Friday night. By Shabbos morning he was transferred. By Motzei Shabbos the tests came back, and the boy started the proper treatment plan immediately. It is now over a year since, and the child is out of this disease and doing phenomenally well. And all thanks to the instant response and tireless devotion of the remarkable people I am fortunate enough to call my colleagues.
