LOS ROBLES CELEBRATES 50 YEARS HEALTH SYSTEM IN THE COMMUNITY O
n November 12th, 1968, Los Robles Regional Medical Center opened its doors to the community. Originally, a $10 million dollar project, Los Robles boasted 225-beds and was the largest private hospital in the state of California at the time. The hospital was staffed with approximately 500 employees and 100 physicians. The day before the hospital opening, a crowd turned out for the dedication of the hospital and developers received congratulatory messages from then President-elect Richard Nixon and then Governor Ronald Reagan.
In 1969, shortly after its opening, Los Robles completed the first heart catheterization in Ventura County, followed by the first open heart surgery performed in the county in 1970. Since then, Los Robles Regional Medical Center has continued to be a healthcare pioneer in the region.
“I am confident that Los Robles Hospital, now and in the years ahead, will stand forth as a symbol of service to the ill and afflicted, thereby giving new dimension to our nation’s highest standards of patient care and treatment,” Richard Nixon provided.
Initially dubbed an “ultra-modern” hospital, Los Robles’ vision upon opening was “to grow with the great family of communities which it serves.” Los Robles has certainly grown to meet the needs of our community and continues to expand its service offerings to provide the care that the community deserves.
In 1969, shortly after its opening, Los Robles completed the first heart catheterization in Ventura County, followed by the first open heart surgery performed in the county in 1970. Since then, Los Robles Regional Medical Center has continued to be a healthcare pioneer in the region.
The newly renovated Los Robles Rehabilitation Hospital has expanded to accommodate 40 beds—doubling the number of patients it serves—and has added a suite of other services to ensure patients receive the highest level of care.

FALL 2018
Today, Los Robles is a licensed 382-bed hospital with over 1,600 employees, 600 physicians on its medical staff, and over 700 volunteers. Los Robles has also expanded to offer offsite services such as Thousand Oaks Surgical Hospital, Los Robles Imaging Center in Moorpark, The Center for Advanced Wound Healing, The Cardiovascular Institute of Los Robles, and the recently renovated Los Robles Rehabilitation Hospital.
Delivering around 500 babies in 1968, Los Robles now averages more than 2,000 births annually. The Birthing Center at Los Robles includes the latest medical technology, spacious birthing suites, mother-baby suites and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The NICU provides an extra level of comfort to expecting parents, knowing that Los Robles can provide prompt care for newborns that require specialized treatment. The Orthopedics and Spine Center at Los Robles provides advanced care to patients with bone and joint conditions. The Total Joint Program at Los Robles replaces over 900 hips and knees a year. The program has exceeded national standards by achieving Gold Seal of Approval Certification from The Joint Commission for these procedures. No stranger to firsts, Los Robles was the first Ventura County hospital to receive a three-year full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).
"We remain intently focused on meeting the ever-changing health needs of our great community." -Natalie Mussi
President and CEO of Los Robles Health System
Los Robles offers the latest in treatment options and has a multidisciplinary team of medical oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists and reconstructive surgeons. They also have a Nurse Navigator program to provide personalized navigation and support through survivorship. In 2016, The Medical Center opened The Center for Advanced Wound Healing, equipped with two hyperbaric treatment chambers, and offering specialized treatment for chronic or non-healing wounds. With over 6.7 million Americans living with chronic wounds, The Center for Advanced Wound Healing aims to prevent amputations and promote mobility and healing. When it comes to emergency care, Los Robles is in a class of its own, as one of the only hospitals to offer treatment in Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Los Robles has the only Level II Trauma Center in eastern Ventura County, and is the only hospital certified by both counties as a STEMI-designated heart attack center. These designations mean that the hospital is equipped to provide specialized and experienced multidisciplinary treatment to patients suffering from traumatic injuries. Working in conjunction with an EMS team, patients are immediately treated by a trauma team to ensure care is initiated as soon as possible. Being a STEMI-designated center means that when paramedics identify heart attack patients through a field electrocardiogram (EKG), they will bring those patients directly
to Los Robles. This designation reflects the Medical Center’s commitment to meeting the guidelines of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association to achieve a “medical contact to balloon time” of 90 minutes or less — referring to the interval between contact with paramedics outside the hospital and the opening of a blocked artery with an angioplasty balloon. Los Robles Regional Medical Center is also the only hospital in the county to be a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center. Comprehensive Stroke Centers are the most clinically advanced and best-equipped hospitals in a given geographical area that can treat any kind of stroke or stroke complication. To achieve this certification, hospitals must meet rigorous clinical and safety requirements set forth by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and other agencies. In addition to the myriad of services offered at the Los Robles campuses, the Health System also participates in over 80 community events annually, attended by over 20,000 community members. Los Robles has been a champion of community education, training thousands of community members in critical life-saving techniques such as bystander CPR, and the importance of recognizing a stroke, to name a few. The Health System’s commitment to excellence is evidenced by the many accreditations, accolades, and community involvement activities that enable Los Robles to provide high-quality, compassionate care to the Conejo Valley and beyond. The last 50 years of achievement have been a testament to the steadfast dedication of the staff, physicians, volunteers, and the community to realize the medical center’s vision, set during its founding. “We are thankful for the tremendous support of the community, which has enabled Los Robles Health System to be a healthcare leader in the region. We remain intently focused on meeting the ever-changing health needs of our great community,” said Natalie Mussi, President and CEO of Los Robles Health System.

Branding Insights Tips to Grow Your Business Brand in 2018 By Matthew Midura Whether you own a small business or work for a Fortune 500 company, your brand matters. Touching nearly every aspect of an organization’s purpose, direction, and product offering, branding is so much more than just a company’s logo or color palette. Branding is the cultivation and management of your company’s identity and reputation, which are built on the organization’s mission, values, vision, and promise to your customers. Successful companies have learned that branding is more about developing community through a brand experience based on these tenets than about creating clever emblems and taglines. As brand management becomes more vital to the success of any organization, here are five tips that will help strengthen your corporate brand in 2018.
Tip #1 Create a Brand Constitution. Take the time to establish a framework that outlines the values and beliefs of your organization. While it may sound trivial, most small businesses don’t take the time to do this. A brand constitution explores your brand purpose, core values, brand personality and brand promise. Your business process, products, promotions and experiences should be influenced by the elements defined in this mission-critical document.
Tip #4 Extend Your Visibility and Reach
Through Partnerships.
Partnerships can provide unique opportunities to strengthen and grow your brand. They fundamentally change both organizations by offering something the other does not. They combine to create new value or define a new category in the market. The best partnerships create new value or define a new category in the marketplace, offering brands the chance to gain new visibility, reach new audiences, or enter new markets.
Tip #2 Map Your Customer Journey. Think about the brands you most commonly purchase or patronize. What sets those brands apart? Why do you continually come back? More often than not, you return to these brands because of your personal experience engaging with the brand. Ultimately, strong brands create loyalty through a consistent, unified experience. Help your company ensure success by examining the touch points for your customers. Define the common experiences and expectations your customers should expect in working with you or buying your products.
Tip #5 Take Advantage of All Your
Chamber’s Benefits.
Finally, don’t forget to leverage your Chamber. Our oneof-a-kind business community is complemented by one of the largest and most competitive Chambers of Commerce in the western United States. Join a networking group or committee to build your community and take advantage of the growing list of marketing and visibility opportunities available to all members. Engage. Connect. Thrive!
Tip #3 Simplify Your Messaging. Branding is about storytelling. Think of your communications as potential opportunities to infuse key brand messages and positioning into your outreach. Consider focusing your company messaging on three topics: your momentum story, industry trends and customer needs. Your momentum story helps build community and support for your mission and vision. Speaking to trends in your industry will help build brand relevance and depth. Build connections with your community through messaging about your company’s ability to meet their unmet needs.

A Better Beginning For Every Birth & Every Family Holding your breath as your pregnancy test turns positive. Adjusting to unusual cravings, aversions, and sensations. Feeling that first kick from inside your belly. Holding your baby for the first time. Having a baby is an experience unlike any other and no two experiences are identical. Heather Bruhn, a local birth doula and founder of Birch Family Birth Services, has a passion for serving women, children, and families. She began to make the transition into doula work after the birth of her second child in 2014, after realizing how little non-judgmental support there is for new mothers. She believes that birth is an intimate, transformative process that not only results in the birth of a baby, but also the birth of a family. At Birch Family Birth Services, a bright team of birth professionals assist with all things pregnancy, birth, and baby in a warm and inviting space located in the outdoor courtyard of The Oaks shopping center. They offer classes, workshops and services to support families through the prenatal and postpartum period.
Prenatal Support To help new parents prepare for their upcoming arrival, Birch offers comprehensive childbirth education classes, baby care & breastfeeding, baby wearing, and car seat safety classes. They also hold Prenatal Yoga classes and Core and Pelvic Floor Workshops to help women safely exercise during pregnancy.
Birth Support Birth doulas are trained professionals who provide emotional, informational, and physical support for woman throughout their pregnancy and childbirth. Although many people may associate doulas with home birth or unmediated birth, a doula is for every woman, regardless of her birth preferences.
Studies have shown that women who are attended by doulas have: •
Shorter labors with fewer complications • Less negative feelings about their childbirth experience • A reduced need for pitocin, vacuum/forceps deliveries or cesareans • Fewer requests for pain medications or epidurals (Source: www.dona.org)
Postpartum Services Once the baby arrives, Birch hosts a free breastfeeding support group every Friday morning that puts mothers in the hands of a certified lactation counselor. Additional breastfeeding support outside of this group is also available via lactation consultants. A postpartum depression & anxiety group leads new mothers through postpartum wellness and seeks to undo the isolation that they can often experience. Other postpartum services included: newborn care specialists, postpartum doulas and car seat technicians. For new moms looking to ease back into fitness, they can choose from an array of classes including: Postpartum Yoga, Mommy and Me Pilates, and Postpartum Core and Pelvic Floor Workshops. All Birch team members adhere to the highest professional standards and join their clients on their pregnancy or parenting journeys and walk alongside them with unbiased, encouraging support. They believe that each family should be given the choice to birth and parent in the way that is best for them.

The Digital Money Era: Blockchain, Bitcoin and Cryptocurrencies 101
with Alon Goren You’ve heard about Bitcoin, Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies: on the news, on Facebook and from your random family members and friends who talk about it as if it’s simple, easy to understand or part of everyday life. To be honest, some may think that’s pretty annoying. Disclaimer: I am one of those annoying people. I am a founder of Crypto Invest Summit (CIS), one of the largest cryptocurrency and blockchain conferences in the world. We’re headquartered right here in the Conejo Valley at Hub101 in Westlake Village and hold our events at the Los Angeles Convention Center. CIS is the first mainstream conference focused on educating the public about blockchain, cryptocurrencies and investing in them. For this world changing technology to actually change the world, the world will have to at least know about it, let alone embrace it. We attract thousands of attendees from around the world and we invite the top technologists and investors to speak alongside celebrity investors like Marcus Lemonis from the CNBC show, The Profit and Robert Herjavec from Shark Tank.

FALL 2018
So, Bitcoin. What’s so special about this magic internet money?
OK, this is interesting technology, but why are people telling me to invest?
A lot. But most doesn’t matter to you and me right now in the context of this article. Here’s what you need to know: Truly digital money has been created. It’s easy to transact transparently and can be tracked fairly easily as well. After a transaction occurs, there is no way to modify the transaction through creative accounting and you can send bitcoin directly from yourself to another person without an intermediary (no banks). Your wallet is your bank and you have a record of every single transaction (on the blockchain!).
Bitcoin was not built to be an investment. It was built to be a currency or store of value. But that said, the surge in interest in bitcoin and the space in general has caused its value to rise significantly. If you bought bitcoin on 1/1/2017 and sold it on 1/1/2018, you could have turned $100 into over $1,400. That kind of run creates a ton of buzz and retail markets tend to chase returns, so you saw an influx of people treat it as a short-term investment opportunity. Most of those people were too late to the party and got burned.
OK, Blockchain. I’ve heard people talk about that. What is it?
So should I invest?
When I said that every bitcoin transaction is stored and tracked somewhere, that is the blockchain. It’s basically a database that can’t be changed. Different people and companies are creating their own versions of blockchains with unique features for various use-cases and industries. In many ways it is a vastly superior way to store data, but it’s also resource intensive and not the most efficient and fast way to store data if it’s not necessary for your business. If you’re a business where data is extremely important, you should explore what you could do using blockchain technology. And this is not some fringe startup thing. IBM employs more blockchain developers and engineers than anyone else in the world.
I personally don’t think that you should think of Bitcoin as an investment. Just like I don’t think you should hide a ton of cash under your mattress. That said, I think everyone should have some bitcoin and everyone should learn about other cryptocurrencies, tokens and how people are using this technology to apply to securities (Security Tokens) to make them more efficient and accessible. Security Tokens represent shares of stock in a company or allow you to own a tiny fraction of a piece of real estate; great ways to play in this space while also being tied to an asset you may be more used to dealing with. Tokens? Like at an arcade? Well, essentially, yes. The idea of a “utility token” was created to give users of a product or piece of technology access and/or
ownership of that technology. This idea essentially stemmed from the concept of allowing the general public to own and participate in the economics of a technology ecosystem. Essentially, people asked the question, “what if the people paid for, owned and got paid by a system like the internet?” …And this crypto economy was born. There are now thousands of companies and products who have created their own token economies that you can participate in. So what’s next? What should I do? This industry is still in its diapers, it’s still brand new and it is still the wild west. No matter what anybody tells you, they have no idea what the future will bring. Just like the early days of ecommerce, people are sending money to deals that are too good to be true and getting burned. You have to be careful. That said, I am clearly all-in and believe this technology has the future to change the world for the better. I’m an idealistic punk rocker who believes in creating a world where everyone has equal access to opportunities and this industry, in my opinion,
has the power to create that world. So, should you invest your time and energy into learning everything you can about this space? YES. Should you put your life savings into the crypto market? Absolutely not. In part of your journey to learn about this new exciting space, I would suggest getting an app like ABRA or Coinbase on your phone and loading a meaningful, but SMALL amount of money into it. Say, the amount you spend a month on coffee or junk-food. Assume it’s gone. Spread it around between bitcoin and some other tokens/coins. Open that app a few times a day. Get a little obsessed. Watch it grow, watch it fall and start reading why. In about 2-3 weeks, you’ll probably be one of the top experts about bitcoin and crypto in your inner circle. You’ll get to be that annoying person. You’re welcome. :-) Alon Goren is a highly respected speaker and entrepreneur who is the founder of five startups. He has been featured in many local and national media publications including: The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Entrepreneur and The Washington Post.

with Mayors Andy Fox, Bill Koehler and Mark Rutherford With all three of you retiring from your city councils in November – what will you miss the most? FOX: As I think about the last 24 years on council and another term on the planning commission I’m actually ready to retire. I have enjoyed serving the community over the years and believe that we were able to accomplish many good things and make a positive difference in our City. Adding to our Open Space inventory, strong fiscal management policies, managed growth through Measure E and a community that is still consistently one of the safest in the nation, Thousand Oaks is a great place to live and raise a family. KOEHLER: The relationships that I have had the pleasure of developing over my 12 years on the Planning Commission and 13 years on the City Council. I will miss our city's tremendous staff that have become family to me. I will also miss taking part in the shaping of the next chapter of our city's growth. RUTHERFORD: Working with the city staff and finding creative solutions to resolve issues that make Westlake Village such a unique place to live.

FALL 2018
What were the top priority projects at your cities when first elected to council?
Can you share something that people may not know about you?
FOX: Concerns about over development. That’s why I authored Measure E. I’m very proud that after twenty plus years our quality of life and infrastructure have been maintained at an extremely high level in part due to the success of Measure E.
FOX: In my 20’s I was a Beatlemania guy. I played John Lennon. I played all the instruments and sang the vocal parts of John in the Beatles. At my daughter Susie’s wedding for the Father Daughter dance I recorded “In My Life” and we danced to it. Until the end when the DJ announced it was me singing the guests thought it was the Beatles. It was pretty cool.
KOEHLER: Certainly the most controversial would have been stopping the development of a private school that the county had approved just outside the eastern portion of our city. Not only would this have created a negative impact upon the rural character of our Old Agoura neighborhood, but also a financial burden upon our city. The other priority was the development of a master specific plan for the development of a town center which we named Agoura Village. RUTHERFORD: Building and opening of our City Hall and Library, developing passive and active parks (Foxfield, Westlake Village Community Park, dog park) and diversifing the city’s revenue sources.
KOEHLER: When I moved to Agoura Hills, I had no ambition to get involved in local politics. I joined our homeowners association at the urging of a few homeowners, and then was appointed to our city's Planning Commission by Denis Weber, a fellow Morrison Ranch homeowner. I certainly didn’t consider myself as someone with political aspirations. Looking back, to all the people who pushed me or helped me along this path, I thank you. RUTHERFORD: Love flying single engine planes, sailing/boating and dune buggying. My wife and I love to travel and I collect water from all over the world.
Mayor Andy Fox (Thousand Oaks), Mayor Mark Rutherford (Westlake Village), Mayor Bill Koehler (Agoura Hills)
The kids sailing academy at the Westlake Yacht Club is such a unique activity for local residents, what are other “hidden gems” in your cities that residents might not know about? KOEHLER: The Night at the Adobe which takes place the Friday night before the start of Reyes Adobe Days is a chance to get out and meet old friends, meet new residents, enjoy food and beverage provided by our local businesses, all while listening to good music in a unique historical setting. RUTHERFORD: The Westlake Village 4th of July Parade has twice as many participants in it than those who vote in general elections; the view of the Conejo Valley from the Westlake Village Community Park gazebo is fantastic; and the TGIF and summer events at the Civic Center and Berniece Bennett Park are enjoyable evenings along with a ride on the Westlake Village Trolley any summer/holiday weekend.
What is your favorite project you have been a part of during your time on the council? FOX: Mediation of Mobil Home Rent Control Ordinance, Cal Lutheran Master Plan, Measure E, Western Plateau Preservation Plan and Automatic Defibrillators in Public Buildings. KOEHLER: Each project has had elements that I have enjoyed, but the project that excited me the most was being a part in developing a plan for Agoura Village. My biggest regret in leav-
ing the Council at this time is that we still have not seen development within the Village. RUTHERFORD: I can’t say I have a favorite project, but the Westlake Village Community Park project was on my agenda when I first ran in 1997. It was clearly the largest, most complex and creative project that I worked on while on the Council.
What’s one personal “wish list” business for your city? FOX: The Los Angeles Rams KOEHLER: For the Los Angeles Rams to make Agoura Hills their permanent corporate headquarters. I would also love to see a Cupids hotdog stand in Agoura Hills. If you haven’t had a Cupids hotdog, you would be in for a real treat.
Andy- What would a perfect evening in the new “Downtown Thousand Oaks” look like to you? FOX: Letitia and I joining 2-3 other couples for dinner, then maybe a comedy show or live music. After, coffee and dessert. All in walking distance. Park the car and enjoy multiple options for dining and entertainment, and of course Al Adam picks up the tab!
Mark - People just love their pets….I’m sure the new dog park in Westlake Village will be very popular among residents - do you have any dogs yourself that will get to enjoy the new facility? RUTHERFORD: Yes, my daughter has a morkie-poo named Kenna.
RUTHERFORD: A good large sporting goods store.
What do you think will be the biggest change in your city over the next 20 years?
Bill – Agoura Hills is “the gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains” – do you have any favorite trails in the area?
FOX: Thousand Oaks will replace Green Bay as “Title Town USA”. The Oaks Mall. Thousand Oaks Blvd. Everyone who is currently on the City Council. My golf handicap.
KOEHLER: I must confess that I don’t do much hiking these days, but if you have ever taken Latigo Canyon to the beach, the views along the way are truly awesome.
KOEHLER: Hopefully the development of an Agoura Village that will give our city a place to gather, and will be friendly to the environment. RUTHERFORD: I truly hope there will not be any big changes. There are always small tweaks and adjustments but I believe most everyone loves Westlake Village the way it is, including me. ConejoView

How OrangeTwist Is Disrupting the Aesthetic Treatment Industry OrangeTwist, Southern California’s premier aesthetics treatment spa, offers an experience unlike any center of its kind—specializing in noninvasive procedures in a relaxed, boutique setting. There’s no longer any secrecy around receiving beauty maintenance treatments. More men and women than ever are incorporating aesthetic services into their regular health and beauty routines, just as they would a visit to the hair salon or dentist. “Our focus on customer safety, comfort and natural-looking results have earned us a loyal, enthusiastic clientele, and we’re so delighted to be able to serve the community of Westlake Village,” says Clint Carnell, Founder and Chairman. OrangeTwist provides DualSculpting, which offers more permanent fat removal in less time. Other products and services include HydraFacial, Forever Young IPL/BBL, BOTOX Cosmetic, Ultherapy, Clear + Brilliant, Juvederm XC, ZO Skin Health, Alastin Skincare and Dysport.
Offering Revolutionary CoolSculpting Treatments
“Our focus on customer safety, comfort and natural-looking results has earned us a loyal, enthusiastic clientele, and we’re so delighted to be able to serve the community of Westlake Village.” -Clint Carnell, Founder & Chairman
The spa is also Southern California’s go-to place for CoolSculpting. This treatment for stubborn fat freezes the cells and eliminates them naturally over the course of one to three months, so the best time to start is well before you need it. And while you may see other places offering a similar service, it’s critically important to find a center that has a well-trained staff who specialize in CoolSculpting—not all offices are equal when it comes to assessing patients and using the applicators. The OrangeTwist staff has undergone thousands of hours of rigorous training in the art and science of CoolSculpting. OrangeTwist also has the most up-to-date equipment in the world, which virtually eliminates any discomfort or bruising that sometimes occurs with older machines. The ideal candidate for CoolSculpting is someone with a few extra inches of stubborn fat they’d like to get rid of without surgery or downtime. It’s for people who don’t want to spend a lot of time in a treatment room but who want impressive, permanent results. It’s not for the obese or someone who wants to lose a lot of weight. Weight loss involves the shrinking of fat cells; CoolSculpting removes them. The skin recedes naturally, so there are no loose folds or any reason for a tummy tuck after the treatment. Each treatment targets 20% to 25% of the fat.
While there’s no replacement for a lifestyle that includes exercise and a healthy diet, CoolSculpting can help take care of areas most resistant to fat reduction. If the client gains weight after the procedure, it can end up in untreated areas such as the breasts, bottom, arms or back. “We’re excited to get to know more of our Westlake Village neighbors. Whether you’re looking for maintenance or major improvements in your skin and body, our team of experts is on board and ready to help you find the very best custom solution,” says Denise Keeler, Chief Operating Officer.

RAVE
Executive Profilee
Dr. Stefan Cosentino
Hospitality and Tourism Program Director/Assistant Professor, California Lutheran University
California is the heart of the billion dollar tourism industry. The need for employees specifically trained for this demanding, diverse and lucrative career encouraged California Lutheran University to add Hospitality and Tourism Management to their curriculum, continuing CLU’s stellar record of launching market-ready, purpose-driven graduates with every tool for success at their fingertips. After a thorough recruitment process, Cal Lutheran chose Dr. Stefan Cosentino to lead this cutting edge program.
Please tell us about your background.
What are your 4-year goals for this program?
I have worked for 12 years in the hospitality industry prior to pursuing a PhD and entering academia. Primarily in marketing roles for companies such as Walt Disney World, Walgreens Health Initiatives (PBM) and Wyndham Vacation Resorts. My early hospitality or service roles included frontline food & beverage operations and retail management. After finishing my degree at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, I relocated to Hong Kong to work at a hospitality school developing relationships with hospitality employers for student intern and graduate placement in addition to instructing courses.
Simply that all Hospitality and Tourism majors graduating in four years have been placed with or have committed to working in a leadership position for a hospitality employer prior to graduation. If we are able to achieve that then we have been successful in developing the desired knowledge, skills and abilities that employers are looking for. The program provides students a business degree with a hospitality focus, so even if a graduate pursues a non-hospitality role the program and university have developed a well-rounded student.
What is it about this new position at California Lutheran University that made you want to take it? Three primary reasons: the opportunity and challenge to build and implement a hospitality program, the incredibly engaged students and experienced faculty I met during the interview process.
What is the biggest misconception about the hospitality industry? That career opportunities are limited and vocational in nature. The hospitality and tourism industry is very dynamic in the sectors that make up the industry including: lodging, food & beverage, MICE (meeting, incentives, conferencing & exhibitions), cruise, travel, and destination or district marketing organizations. There is the
“The program provides students a business degree with a hospitality focus.
18 | ConejoView
FALL 2018
same need for well-rounded managers to work at hospitality firms as in other industries to oversee operations, marketing, finance, and product development. These are rewarding roles with generally great benefits if you like to travel.
Why should students take this program when they can hire in at the entry level in almost any hotel or venue? The learning outcomes for the hospitality curriculum are centered around developing the required knowledge and competencies for graduates to take on managerial roles in the industry. This curriculum is also aligned with learning outcomes at liberal arts institutions like Cal Lutheran aimed at strengthening creative and critical thinking, communication, leadership and quantitative literacy. Having frontline experience at an operational level is essential for every manager, so students will also be required to perform these roles in their area of choice or through rotational internships specifically developed for our students. Like any other employer, hospitality firms look to place talent that are a right fit for the role. Several hospitality firms have higher expectations for the interpersonal skills an entry-level employee must possess, so I do not agree they will hire almost anyone.
What challenges are the biggest for the hospitality industry? Several articles already written may commonly list tech-
nological advances, changing consumer preferences, and more recently security as challenges for the hospitality industry. Consistent in all these articles though is the shortage of experienced or trained labor. Changing expectations of frontline staff is also a challenge if managers are not engaging employees to prevent or reduce turnover. I believe one of the main factors contributing to the development of this hospitality program was the opportunity to enhance the talent pool of trained hospitality professionals in the area.
Where do the best opportunities lie for students who complete this degree? Management training programs with lodging chains, restaurant groups, events management, and travel related businesses. It is really up to the student about what inspires them and what they demonstrate a passion for. From prior experience, some will choose fast-paced operational roles where others pursue discipline-focused roles that support operations in roles such as marketing and human resources.
What is the best experience you’ve had working in the hospitality industry? When I was part of a team from Walt Disney World Florida working in Anaheim for the opening of Disney’s California Adventure theme park. Our role was to enhance media coverage of the park’s opening by coordinating Disney executive interviews with the various radio or broad-
Dr. Cosentino with future hospitality professionals at the Chinese University of Hong Kong cast partners staged around the park. Those were very long and sometimes challenging days, but the team and leadership skills strengthened through the experience was priceless. In general contributing to the successful opening of a theme park product, resort or restaurant for various firms has always been a very memorable experience.
What do you expect will be the most enjoyable part of your new role? Connecting employers with students who have demonstrated a passion for the industry. While CLU’s career services job site will host internships and job postings, students will have several opportunities to network with hiring managers through classroom projects or special courses developed with employers offering unique experiential learning opportunities.
Who are your heroes? My dad of course. Professionally speaking though individuals I do follow are TV personalities related to business and hospitality, Marcus Lemonis and Anthony Melchiorri. I appreciate the way they respect
the individuals they work with while being consistent in processes employed for evaluating and growing businesses.
Do you have a favorite book about business and/or the hospitality industry? Although dated, a book I often refer back to even in classes sometimes is The GE Way by Jack Welch. It offers approaches used to create business solutions covering various management topics from human resource management to negotiations.
Where is your favorite place to travel? Working in the hospitalityrelated roles has given me opportunities to travel a lot within the United States and Asia. While living and working in Hong Kong was fantastic, I would like to visit countries or cities in that region I did not get a chance to that have a rich and diverse culture. Preferably with only a backpack. Currently though my travel interests lie in experiencing the great destinations in the Greater Conejo Valley and Ventura County. ConejoView

Business Profile
UNCLE AF’S
INTERNATIONAL SANDWICHES By: Sara Luu
Uncle Af’s is a family owned business, created by a father and son specializing in European inspired sandwiches that offer a unique palette of flavors to the Conejo Valley. Only the highest quality ingredients are used to craft their menu offerings, including: butcher-quality meats, organic produce, natural cheeses, chef-designed signature sauces and toasted artisan bread.
What’s in a name? While growing up, Ben’s friends would call his father “Uncle Af” as a term of endearment. When it was time to name the business, “Uncle Af’s” was the most meaningful name that came to mind. It supported the philosophy of a business for the old neighborhood and the mission to serve the community. Anyone that comes in is family and is treated that way. Guests should not be surprised when walking in to be warmly greeted and immediately offered a drink just as you would at your family or friend’s.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. One of Ben’s first and major influences was his grandmother who introduced him to the culinary arts as a child. She taught him to cook and from there ignited a passion and the dream of becoming a chef. He started studying the culinary arts at the age of 13 and worked at several restaurants over the years honing his skills. His father who worked in the restaurant industry for over 20 years was instrumental in guiding Ben to become the youngest restaurant owner in Agoura Hills at the age of 21. Ben was honored as a 40 Under Forty in 2018 by the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce.
A Taste of Europe Uncle Af’s vision was to introduce the uninspired eater to the flavors of Europe while still incorporating familiar American flavors. Their craft sandwiches go beyond flavor, offering fresh and healthy options. Some popular menu items include: the Chicken Burrata (#7) made with chicken breast, avocado, tomatoes, Burrata cheese and homemade pesto on the ciabatta pan bread or the Vegetarian (#3) with sautéed mushrooms & spinach, avocados, black olives, goat cheese and garlic aioli on ciabatta panini bread. The bread is baked fresh every day and everything is cooked per order with sauces created by Ben to reflect the unique flavors found in Europe.
5-Star Yelp Rating and more The Yelpers have spoken and have crowned this neighborhood gem as a 5-Star eatery. A visit on their Yelp page displays glowing reviews from hundreds of enthusiastic customers. In addition, they have won the distinction of being named an award-winning “Budget Friendly Southern California” caterer. As a catering company acclaimed for its excellence and affordable menu, they promise to be well planned and organized from start to finish and deliver delicious and plentiful, award winning food. Their experienced staff will work closely and be able to match any budget and any size event throughout Southern California, from 10 to 1,000 guests.

Q&A
met his
Soul
Q&A with Lance Sterling Owner, The Canyon in Agoura Hills
Tell us about your background. I was born in Woodstock, NY and went to college at the University of Arizona. I worked my way through college at the Wildcat House (the predecessor to House of Blues) in Tucson, AZ.
Please tell us about your career prior to the Canyon. I started at Grad II, Inc., with The Wildcat House (Tucson), Devil House (Tempe) and The Graduate (San Luis Obispo). In 1987 I moved on to Loews Hotels, as the Food & Beverage Director for three properties, the Vantana Canyon, The Anatol Texas and Santa Monica. Then, in 1993 I joined the House of Blues. I was brought in to pull the organization out of bankruptcy and once I succeeded in that, I was charged with growing the company. We expanded from two venues to nine. It was during my tenure at HOB when I met my wife Caryn, who was VP of Sales & Marketing. HOB gave us 60 days to renovate the Atlanta Baptist Tabernacle building into a music venue, so it would be open in
22 | ConejoView
FALL 2018
time for the 1996 Olympics, and we did it! A short while later, HOB lost interest in the venue and we took it over ourselves, revamped it, and renamed it The Tabernacle. Subsequently, it was named by both Rolling Stone and USA Today as one of the best venues in the United States.
What was your original vision for The Canyon? How has it changed over the years? I first envisioned The Canyon as a supper club. We’ve expanded the number of concerts to about 4 per week and we’ve developed a more extensive appetizer and dinner menus since we first opened. Of course, the most obvious way we’ve changed is by opening new venues. Currently, we have The Canyon Santa Clarita and The Rose in Pasadena, along with producing concerts at The Saban in Beverly Hills and The Libbey Bowl in Ojai. By the end of 2018, we will be opening The Canyon Inland Empire with additional plans for new venues in Santa Ana, Temecula, Sacramento, Bakersfield and Escondido.
“We pride ourselves on the openers we book and in helping them to grow their careers.” How do you see the Canyon growing over the next few years? Our goal is to break the back of the monopolistic behavior of the major concert companies, like AEG and Live Nation. Those companies block artists from performing at all of the independents and all of the city-owned venues that are not under their control. It’s ironic that these two mega companies are currently suing each other over the same monopolistic behavior that they invented in the concert industry.
How do you choose and book your artists? We research the history on bands that we book and then once a band does well for us, we rebook them again every year. We also get suggestions from our patrons, many of whom are die-hard music fans. We take their suggestions to heart and in many cases track those performers down. That’s how we first booked artists like Dave Davies from The Kinks, Ben Harper, and Jack Johnson.
Which artists have you been most excited to book? Styx, Pat Benatar and Stone Temple Pilots.
Has there been an artist who “got away?" Someone you’d love to book but haven’t been able to, yet? Vince Neil form Motley Crue is one of my favorites. I’d love to have him play our venues. That reminds me; I’m going to put in an offer and try to book him!
If you’re buying the ticket, who do you most love to see in concert? The Tubes. It was actually Fee Waybill who first got me into this business.
How has your industry changed in the last 10 years? Monopolistic behavior has gone rampant. Independents have been wiped off the face of the concert business with the rise of the mega companies. It is best analogized by equating Live Nation and AEG to the major television networks. Like American Idol gets to decide who is talented, Live Nation and AEG get to decide who plays where. There is a huge drought over the past ten years of major artists who do not have 360 deals with one of these two companies. They have starved the industry of quality performing acts, much like in the ‘60’s when the advent of studio bands generated the bulk of record sales. Currently, if a band can’t fill a 20,000-seat venue they have no value to the major companies. Becoming a great performer is something that has to be done in front of audiences at independent venues, not on stadium stages, a la Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. Bands need to grow organically, not be anointed super stars because they signed a 360 deal with Live Nation or AEG.
Who are some of your heroes? Isaac Tigrett, who was the original founder of House of Blues, is my true mentor and to this day I still don’t know whether he likes me. John Thacker, who ran Lowes Hotels, taught me now to integrate into corporations where they couldn’t identify that I was a corporate anarchist. Howard Kaufman, who was a giant as an artist manager in the music industry. I cherish the breakfasts I had with him over the years; he kept me on the straight and narrow and always had an original perspective on what we were up to. And of course, if you’re in the music business you have to respect Irving Azoff and the fact that he’s had a target on his back for as long as I’ve known of him and he still rises above it all.
Which emerging artists are you paying attention to right now? Opening bands mean so much to us. Many bands that have gone the organic route and are famous because of their hard work and their ability to perform live were originally booked as openers at our venues, among them: Imagine Dragons, Hoobastank, They Might Be Giants, and Panic At the Disco. We pride ourselves on the openers we book and in helping them to grow their careers. Some that we expect great things from would be: The Sound of Ghosts, Sitting on Stacy, LoveGhost, Goodnight Kiss, Savannah Burrows, and Bleu Stroud.

Top 5 Information Technology Questions for Businesses 1
How can businesses keep their network safe from outside intrusion and internal threats? With traditional wired networks, it is extremely difficult for someone to steal an internet connection, but Wi-Fi capabilities have made it easy for just about anyone to use the internet on practically any type of device. Wireless signals can pose a significant problem when others are able to access your internet, which may even be in a neighboring building. One way to be sure that your network is safe from any outside or internal threats is to change your password often. Businesses should always have two separate Wi-Fi names for their network (ex. Joes Coffee WIFI/ Joes Coffee Public WIFI). This step will ensure that an outsider who wants to be connected to your network, can connect only to your guest network. Both Wi-Fi networks should also be password protected to ensure that anyone you do not want on the Wi-Fi will not be able to access it. Picking an effective password is tricky, but it can protect you from potential hackers. Some basic guidelines for choosing a password are as follows: use special characters (ex. ?,!,%,$,&), make your password 8-10 characters in length and do not include your personal or business name.
2
In the event of an emergency or security breach, is my data being safely backed up? According to FEMA, 43 percent of small businesses never reopen their doors after a catastrophic data loss. The good news is you can be proactive about this threat to your business with a backup cloud service, such as Carbonite. This type of service can ensure you will be able to recover your most important files, though it cannot recover the entire system in the wake of a natural disaster. For less than $50 a month, you can choose when and how many of your files are backed up, safeguarding your business.

3
When was the last time that the latest software patches have been applied to my network? Although it makes sense to update your system, doing so without having the proper knowledge can be costly. Your software may not be compatible with the newest upgrade, causing something simple to take a significantly longer time to accomplish. You want to avoid being the “test run” for the new software patches that come out, so having your technician automatically push out updates isn’t always the best strategy. Talk to your tech team about the right time to proceed with updates to the system. They should have a provider (such as LabTech) who tests patches before sending them. This will ensure that you are current on the latest software that is right for your system, and that things will run smoothly.
Should my company have a disaster recovery plan? If so, how often is it reviewed and updated?
4
Making sure that your data is backed up in a cloud-based system during a major disaster is vital to safeguard that your business remains up and running. StorageCraft is a disaster recovery cloud system that will make sure your business will survive anything. StorageCraft is able to take a virtual screen shot of your server and you are able to dictate the number of times your data is captured throughout the day. In the midst of a disaster, you are able to virtually “spin up your servers and continue with business as usual.
Should my company have a disaster recovery plan? If so, how often is it reviewed and updated?
5
Having an IT company that can tell you the health of every computer in your business is something every business owner should have. A trusted IT partner can provide peace of mind allow you to focus on the other aspects of running your business. LabTech software tells your IT company everything it needs to know to keep your server and your business thriving. Many IT companies partner with companies like LabTech to monitor their customers’ networks and servers as well as deploy applications and patches.

In addition to monetary needs, sometimes it is that simple understanding ear, that shoulder to cry on, or that parent who understands what you are going through that is the true gift. #BBFKiddos. www.bumblebeefoundation.org
Conejo Community Outreach Conejo Community Outreach (CCO) is a 100 percent volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) corporation, founded by local moms. The organization aims to connect local generosity with local need for support by hosting a variety of community fundraising events that directly give back to individuals and families in Conejo Valley. Earlier this year, the nonprofit launched its diaper bank, a free resource which provides local residents in need with diapers, wipes, and — in emergency cases — formula. CCO believes that communities gain strength when all residents are appropriately clothed and fed. In addition to its year-round diaper bank, CCO also hosts an annual Thanksgiving event, providing Thanksgiving Day meals to families in Conejo Valley. www.conejocommunityoutreach.com
Conejo Schools Foundation The Conejo Schools Foundation (CSF) is an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to continuously improving and enriching learning opportunities for all Conejo Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) students. Named a California Non-Profit of the Year for 2017, the CSF serves as a bridge between the community and our CVSUD schools. CSF matches community interests with needs of their students and educators, bringing opportunities including: The All- District Music Festival, Parent Education Workshops, Cash 4 Conejo Classrooms Grant Program, Parents Making a Difference Conference, Cycles for Success Program, GetAhead Program, TEDxConejo and TEDxYouth, Teacher Professional Development opportunities and naming opportunities. www.conejoschools.org

Manna Conejo Valley Food Bank Celebrating its 47th year of service, Manna has been the conduit between a caring community and families who need food assistance; they will continue to do so at an even greater level once their new facility is complete. More than 280,000 pounds of food is donated each year to help stock Manna’s pantry. Partnerships with grocers and bakeries, community and backyard gardens, and Food Forward provide all the perishable foods for Manna to distribute to families in need. Individual and recurring funding, either by check or on-line, supports refrigeration for perishable foods and the truck used to pick up food donations. Manna’s pantry is open three days a week to distribute food (Tuesday: 10a.m.-3p.m.; Thursday: 10a.m.-4p.m.; Saturday: 10a.m.-1p.m.) and six days a week to receive food donations. www.mannaconejo.org
My Stuff Bags Foundation The My Stuff Bags Foundation provides duffels of new belongings, comfort and psychological first aid to thousands of children across the United States each year who must be rescued from abuse, neglect, domestic violence, and homelessness. These children often enter foster care and crisis shelters with nothing of their own. Headquartered in Westlake Village, their volunteer center annually hosts over 2,000 volunteers who sort donations and “stuff” approximately 20,000 My Stuff Bags per year. There are a variety of opportunities for local community members, groups and corporations to help by donating time, money or the many items that fill the Bags. www.mystuffbags.org
Santa Monica Mountains Fund The Santa Monica Mountains Fund, based in Thousand Oaks, is the official nonprofit supporting the National Park Service in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. As such, the Fund supports wildlife research for mountain lions and other animals, nature education and trail maintenance. Last year, the Fund helped bring nearly 20,000 4th graders from Title 1 schools to the park for a day of ranger-led adventure. The Fund also jointly manages the SAMO Youth program employing 22 youth from underserved communities for an eight week mentoring program in the mountains. The Fund reaches out to local communities offering information about how to be a good nature neighbor to all the wildlife with which we share this beautiful community. www.samofund.org
Many Mansions Many Mansions provides well-managed, affordable housing to low-income residents of Ventura County and its surrounding communities. By providing housing and life-enriching services to those most in need, they aim to break the cycle of poverty and remove the barriers that prevent members of our community from having a basic need met—a roof over their head. In addition to providing housing, the life-enriching services are crucial to their residents since many do not have the resources or transportation to seek out other support in the community. Many Mansions’ annual fundraising event, Bowls of Hope on November 4, 2018 at CLU, is designed to spread awareness about the need for affordable housing and help fund these residential service programs. www.manymansions.org
