CLEAN ENERGY FOR BUSINESSES:

Commercial Roll Out Underway for the Clean Power Alliance

Clean Power Alliance (CPA), Southern California’s new locally-operated clean energy provider has enrolled commercial customers across 28 additional communities (27 cities and unincorporated Ventura County) since May 2019. Conejo Valley area cities being served by CPA include Agoura Hills, Thousand Oaks, and Calabasas, with Westlake Village joining in 2020. Business customers in these areas are now receiving clean energy purchased by Clean Power Alliance that has higher renewable content and is competitively-priced with Southern California Edison (SCE). SCE will continue to deliver power, send utility bills, and be responsible for resolving any electricity service issues. Each participating City or County’s elected officials voted to join Clean Power Alliance and chose a default rate tier from one of CPA’s three rate tiers. These tiers include: 36% Lean Power (a 1-2% bill savings), 50% Clean Power (equal to Edison base rates), and 100% Green Power (7-9% higher than Edison base rates). Clean Power Alliance’s board is comprised of an elected official from each community who voted to join the Joint Powers Agency.

We are excited that our local businesses can now obtain higher renewable content at competitive rates. This phase of Clean Power Alliance’s service launch will serve 116,000 new business, industrial, and agricultural customers. Per California law, enrollment into Clean Power Alliance is automatic and customers will receive four informational notices from Clean Power Alliance in the mail. Two notices were sent before May of 2019 and two afterwards, advising businesses of their choices and their community’s chosen default rate option. Individual commercial customers will be able to opt up, down, or out (and return to SCE) at any time once they receive a pre-enrollment notice in the mail, through Clean Power Alliance’s website or customer service call center: www.cleanpoweralliance. org or 888-585-3788. For reference, below is a chart referencing the default tier that the cities of Agoura Hills and Thousand Oaks have chosen as well as their opt-out rates. CPA Cities & Countries

One helpful tool business owners will be able to use to compare their rates is Clean Power Alliance’s online bill calculator. The tool allows customers to input their SCE account number and rate schedule to see how their bill would fare under each Clean Power Alliance tier versus under SCE’s rates. It is available at cleanpoweralliance.org/compare. This phase of commercial enrollment follows the enrollment in February 2019 of over 900,000 residential customers from

all of Clean Power Alliance’s 31 communities. Clean Power Alliance’s previous enrollment included over 30,000 businesses in unincorporated Los Angeles County and the Cities of Rolling Hills Estates and South Pasadena in 2018. To date, over 97% of eligible Clean Power Alliance customers have chosen to remain with Clean Power Alliance. “Clean Power Alliance offers more choice and competitively priced clean energy to our commercial customers, many of whom have their own sustainability targets,” said Ted Bardacke, Executive Director, Clean Power Alliance. “We’re excited to bring competition to the electricity market in a way that will foster innovation and allow us to meet the state’s climate goals ahead of schedule with customer needs in mind.”

Customers who choose to opt up to the 100% Green Power plan (or retain if they belong to a community with a 100% Green Power default tier) will also

Clean Power Alliance staff are already proactively presenting about the value of the service and rates their agency will provide to commercial customers and local Chambers of Commerce, including the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce in April. Customers requesting or receiving individual business presentations will receive a detailed commercial customer focused packet that includes the different rates and incentives available to them. “Part of our vision of regional emission reduction means serving our local larger commercial customers with tailored programming, such as special recognition of

our business leaders who have stepped up and committed to 100% Green Power,” said Diana Mahmud, Councilwoman of South Pasadena and Board Chair, Clean Power Alliance. “As local elected officials, we’re excited to offer a range of energy products that offer greater greenhouse gas emission reductions at competitive rates.”

Clean Power Alliance is also busy acquiring and negotiating new energy generation facilities. In early 2019, the competitively priced, Kern County based Voyager wind turbine project started serving customers. The annual Request for Offers (RFO) for long term energy contracts is currently underway, with an initial shortlist of bidders proposing diverse projects, from solar, to hydroelectric, to battery storage projects. Bidders had to provide competitively priced projects that also met high environmental and equity criteria. The final bids will then go before Clean Power Alliance’s board for approval in late Spring. Long term contracts allow Clean Power Alliance to obtain less expensive renewable energy and maintain its competitive rates.

who was a member of many chambers, the CEO of your Chamber for 10 years, and as 2019 Chair of the Chambers of

Barbara Counties, I know from personal experience, the impact a chamber of commerce can make on a business

community. There are approximately

7,000 Chambers nationwide, each one different but each with the same true

north: to help businesses prosper and communities thrive.

As business people, the Western Association of Chamber Executives (I serve on their Board) wanted to take a deep

dive into the data as to how our business

communities see us, what they want from us and how we’re measuring up. There

are many ways to define success, but the strategic principles we live by inspired us to hire an independent company,

BrandBirth, to gather the most essential information directly from the people of

the business communities we serve. We wanted to know for sure that our work is correctly aligned with the reality of today’s business world and coursecorrect where necessary.

The study included quantitative, qualitative and secondary research across a broad demographic spectrum and when all the feedback was sorted, three common themes emerged high above all the others:

1. Chambers of Commerce are described as being the primary Catalyst for business growth, the Convener for leaders and influencers and the Champion for stronger communities.

2. The Chamber brand pillars were further described as having a unique collection of skill sets that are not often united all together anywhere else. These pillars are: Depth of knowledge, Unimpeachable Trust, Universal Respect, Advocate for Business and a Pillar of the Community. 3. The Chamber brand values were overwhelmingly described as serving as a trusted convener & connector for the business realm and the community at large, operating with a results-driven focus, serving as a proven hub of information within the business community, being a proud defender of business values and most important, in my opinion, striving to foster a culture of collaboration and collegiality in our community. The people surveyed, representing thousands of jobs, went on to say that

Chambers are a catalyst for growth within the local business community, but that growth also shows in larger ways: not only as a creator of jobs but as a partner in growing the businesses and business leaders who create the jobs that strengthen our communities.

The Chamber brand promise reflects our fervently held belief that the health of the business community and the health of the larger community in which it lives are inextricable. Our work - providing the tools that businesses need to succeed - is central to the success of the community as a whole.

At your Chamber, we further believe that Chambers are inclusive by nature and that our best work comes by helping to find solutions no matter where a business is on its journey. In my role as CEO, I’m privileged to be asked to speak with students of all ages and one of the things I always tell them is that, no matter where your career takes you, find that Chamber of the Commerce (and the local library!) and join them. It will connect you to people you wouldn’t meet otherwise, provide real – world experiences and solutions and it will also ensure that you are part of something bigger.

WITH ROB DE GEUS CONEJOVIEW: We are very excited to have you as the new City Manager of Westlake Village. Tell us a little bit about your career journey that brought you to the Conejo Valley. ROB DE GEUS: Prior to accepting this position, I was the Deputy City Manager for the City of Palo Alto where I worked for the past 19 years. As Deputy City Manager, I was responsible for the external facing departments including: Fire, Police, Office of Emergency Services, Office of Transportation, Planning and Community Environment, Libraries, and Community Services. Prior to that position, I served as the Director of Community Services in Palo Alto, one of the largest departments in the city, where I managed an extensive network of parks, trails and open space, recreation and arts services, and facilities; an aspect of life that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve learned is incredibly important in the Conejo Valley. A few of my passions and areas I intend to focus on include the Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economic health and vitality, community engagement, public-private partnerships, environmental sustainability, and community health and wellness. CV WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS POSITION? RD As City Manager, I have a unique opportunity to work with a diverse group of people ranging from elected officials, professional staff, non-profit and private sectors, county and regional partners and residents. The work is largely about building and

strengthening community and supporting the high quality of life residents and visitors enjoy; for me that’s why I’m involved in public service. CV WHAT ABOUT WESTLAKE VILLAGE MADE YOU CHOOSE IT OVER OTHER TOWNS IN CALIFORNIA OR ELSEWHERE? RD In searching for a City Manager position, I was looking for a city and a community with similar values to mine. The more I got to know Westlake Village, the more I knew this would be a good fit. Specifically, the sense of community and pride residents have for their city, the well-maintained parks, streets and facilities, the family friendly focus of the community and the fiscally responsible foresight are just a few of the qualities that I found compelling. CV WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE CITY IN THE NEAR FUTURE AND DOWN THE ROAD? RD My number one goal is to get to know the community, to listen and learn what residents and the City Council really care about. In addition, public safety and emergency preparedness are high priorities, as are fiscal health and a sustainable budget, public engagement and communications; these are all important focus areas for me and the City Council this year. CV WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES THAT YOU THINK WESTLAKE VILLAGE WILL FACE? RD Managing change that all cities experience will be one of the biggest challenges. Residents appreciate the quality of life they experience today, therefore any change in areas such as housing, emerging technologies, business, traffic and transportation amongst others will need to be considered very carefully, planned well and managed closely in partnership with the community in order to strike the right balance. I am committed to bringing people together to help find the best path forward for the community. CV WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF WORKING IN CITY GOVERNMENT THAT PEOPLE PROBABLY DON’T KNOW? RD First and foremost, it’s an honor and a privilege to participate in the democratic process of government. I strive to act

in the best interests of residents for the long term and at times, it can be difficult to find community consensus as perspectives and interests vary. That said, this is also one of the most rewarding parts of the job, helping communities work together to find solutions to the issues we face. CV WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL LIFE THAT YOU WOULD CARE TO SHARE? RD I was born and raised in Australia and I return to visit family once a year. In April, the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce hosted Roberto Martinez, a Google National Trainer and Digital Coach in partnership with Google to bring our business community a Grow with Google Workshop. At this workshop, business owners and professionals came together to learn more about reaching customers with Google My Business as well as how to expand their businesses across multiple devices and how to advertise online using the tools provided by Google. This article outlines some key takeaways from this workshop as well some starting tips to improve your business’s online visibility and capitalize on those shifting consumer behaviors.

As a business, you know that it is imperative to have things like your contact information, address, and hours on your business profile, but one thing that often gets overlooked is simply keeping your basic information updated. For example, do you have special hours during holidays? Add those in! Do you have a cool space to show off? Use pictures to captivate your audience and tell a story! When using pictures, make sure they are ones that matter and give depth.

With a business profile, there are multiple ways you can engage your customers including: sharing updates, directly communicating with text messages, or managing customer reviews. If you are a business that schedules regular appointments, it may be beneficial to have a text-message system set up through GoogleMyBusiness. By doing so, a customer can have the option to message you directly and you can respond to inquiries right from your cell phone. Google also allows users who have visited your business to leave reviews about your business. In some cases, a user may submit a review that does not necessarily reflect a positive experience. One suggestion in how to handle this type of feedback is to engage directly with that customer where they left their review and suggest having a conversation offline. A key point to remember when managing your engagement with customers is that you want to humanize your business and make sure that your message addresses the concerns that your customer is writing about.

Search engine marketing is an umbrella term that involves making your business more visible both through paid and unpaid efforts online. When you search for a Google term online, sometimes you will see a group of paid advertisements related to what you searched. Although you can pay to have advertising show up based on related search terms, you could also opt to market towards your target demographic by using Google Analytics to strategically place advertisements on related webpages. Who is your ideal audience? How will you reach them? How many clicks does it take your customer to get what they want? Knowing the answer to these questions will be crucial to how you’ll operate your business online because it will determine what type of outreach will be most cost-effective. Identify what makes your business unique, build on those qualities, and tailor your media to reflect that on all platforms. A great way to begin optimizing the way people reach your business is self-assessment. Try searching for your business on different platforms such as mobile, computer, and tablet and assess how long it takes for you to get the service you want on those platforms. Are you a business that requires forms to be filled out? Make sure it is easy to fill out those forms and that it is directed to the person responsible for receiving them. If it takes more than 5 clicks for your customer to get the information they need on a mobile device or computer, then you could potentially be losing out on customers who chose your competition because they are more easily accessible and provide a more friendly user-experience. This plays a large role on how your business shows up on Google searches as well.

Google Analytics is a free, powerful web analytics tool that identifies how your visitors found your site, and what they did once they got there. It can also measure the effectiveness of online and offline marketing campaigns allowing you to promote your business in a more cost-effective manner.

During our workshop, Roberto also explained that Google’s algorithms are able to determine ‘higher quality’ webpages, in turn placing those higher up on the search results. A high-quality webpage (in this case) would be a webpage that has high visit duration, has multiple links outside of its own website that lead back to a landing page (backlinks), and utilizes keywords that are relevant to the customers search terms. When setting up your advertisements and marketing campaigns, Google allows you to enter about 100 keywords that are attached to those campaigns that help it gain relevance to search terms. One thing you could do to gain a competitive edge when entering keywords…use your competitions name as a keyword!
