Family Owned for Over 30 Years

In 1987, a young man surprised his wife with a pickup truck as she stood on the stoop with their two small boys.

Naturally she asked, “What is this, honey?” Smiling his signature grin he replied, “Our delivery truck for the new mattress store I’m opening.” A testament to their love and trust, she only blinked once in disbelief before committing to this new adventure. Since then, their family business has not only grown but has thrived, and this December they celebrated their 32nd anniversary.

“Customer service is the core of what we do, and the heart and soul of who we are as a company” says Fred Kunke, The Sleep Shoppe’s Founder and Owner. In fact, we strongly believe that is a huge part of the reason why we were voted Ventura County’s #1 mattress store for the last 21 years in a row in the

Ventura County Star. I am so grateful and appreciative for that.”

The Sleep Shoppe is dedicated to working closely with their customers to evaluate their body type and sleep history. In addition to their own expertise, all of the showrooms are equipped with a scientifically advanced system called

bedMATCH developed by The Sleep to Live Institute. It runs a diagnostic measuring of your body and identifies the optimal postural support and pressure relief. With these results, it is both easy and fun to find the perfect mattress to meet their client’s specific needs and desires.

Kunke says that the most fulfilling part of his job is watching customers come in trusting him to find the right mattress for every milestone. “Newlyweds come in to find their first bed together, then come back to find the right crib mattress when they are expecting their first baby. Parents come looking for beds as their children grow and go off to college, and then those young people come in to find beds for their aging parents. We provide beds for our customer’s loved ones at every age and every stage of their lives.”

It’s not surprising for a family man like Fred that when asked what his greatest accomplishment in business is, he immediately turns to his own family. “My son Jonathan has worked side by side with me for the past 14 years, and that has been such a blessing,” Fred says. “I think of every member of our Sleep Shoppe team as family, but I didn’t think when I started this that we actually would be a real family business all these years later.”

The Sleep Shoppe has come a long way since that starry-eyed boy bought his first pick-up truck and opened his first tiny storefront. Thirty-two years later, they are still serving their community with three locations all under the same family ownership. It is easy to see their passion, and to get swept up in their love of what they do. It’s no wonder their slogan is “Shop The Sleep Shoppe and You’ll Be Waking Up Happy”.
