t may be hard to imagine in a world that’s evolving as fast as ours that anything is still being done the same way as it was 80 years ago, but when it comes to most commercial buildings and spaces, that is the case.

The reality is few work environments promote wellness, a positive environment or cultivate productivity. “Today’s office is a wasteland. It saps vitality, blocks talent, frustrates accomplishment,” said industrial designer Robert Propst. Job satisfaction and productivity is directly linked to key factors such as lighting, indoor air-quality, privacy, noise level and aesthetics. While we all speculate how things like medicine, transportation, and technology will evolve, we at Pacific Office Interiors are dreaming of the future nexus of architecture and impact. How will wellness, sustainability, and the need for personal connections impact technology and design? The Buffalo Organization for Social and Technological Innovation cited major features such as acoustic privacy (audible and visual), support for meetings and collaborative spaces, sufficient storage, distraction-free workspaces and the accommodation of technology as having the greatest positive impacts for both the individual and the team. The cloud, the internet of things, the great untethering, all promise to give us the freedom to work where and how we want. On the heels of technology are new and revolutionary tools for communication. How we share information is evolving at breakneck speed. This can be seen through chat, text, emoji, video and social networking. Tools such as email, not too long ago revolutionary, are slow and cumbersome compared with today’s fastest and most flexible solutions. One thing is certain, the ways of communication are changing and those who don’t adapt will be left behind.

ConejoView: What connects you most to the Conejo Valley?

CV: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Scott Harris: I moved to the Conejo Valley in ’79 when I married a “local” girl, Randi Medvedev. We took a 6-month trip and visited all 48 continental states to decide where we wanted to live. At the end of the trip, we decided that Thomas Wolfe was wrong and “You can go home again.”

SH: Define your own success and then live it. Christopher Morley wrote, “There is only one success…to be able to spend your life in your own way.” I first read that in an October 1982 issue of National Geographic. It was as close as I’ve ever come to an epiphany.

CV: You run a very successful marketing company; why did you choose this field? SH: I took a college job selling advertising and fell in love with the marketing world. I started Mustang Marketing under the mistaken impression I would be able to control my own time. CV: When hiring, what are the “must-have” qualities you look for? SH: An ability to get along with people. A willingness to work hard. I love having someone on our staff overhear a conversation, jump up and say “I can do that for you.” You find enough people with those qualities and you’ll have a successful business.

CV: You are a true convener in the Conejo, whether it’s breakfasts, music jams or guest speakers at your home. Why? SH: I have long felt blessed by the people in my life and from all walks of life. I am fortunate to be able to spend time with them; sometimes that experience is enhanced by bringing a variety of people together. CV: Your new book was just published; please tell us about it. SH: It’s my first novel: Coyote Courage. A lifelong fan of western novels, I finally decided to write one. It appears people are enjoying the book, which is flattering. I plan on publishing six additional books in 2017.

CV: You’re a musician, a lover of nature and our country. Can you tell us about pursuing those passions? SH: Music has been a blessing in my life. I play in a blues band, harmonica and guitar. I can see why people spend their entire lives chasing careers in music. As for nature and the country, Randi and I have been to all 50 states and almost all of the 59 National Parks. CV: Is there anything I haven’t asked that you’d like to add? SH: This seems like the perfect place to say thank you. As I enter my 60th year, getting closer to the finish line than the starting line, I find myself reflecting more than I used to. I still shake my head in disbelief at how incredibly fortunate I have been and how much of that comes right here, from the heart and soul, of Conejo Valley. Conejo Valley Tourism: More Revenue for Our Local Cities By Adam Haverstock Conejo Valley is a nice, quiet place to live. That’s the reason residents choose this area: low crime rates, excellent schools and good quality of life. What many people don’t realize is that there is a large team of community leaders from many organizations that work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep this place nice and quiet. From the public safety staff, to the business community, to the civic leaders there are many people doing a lot of work to make sure it seems there isn’t much going on at all. One great example of this is the Conejo Valley Tourism Improvement District (CVTID). You haven’t heard of it? You’re not alone. Unless you happen to run a hotel or work in economic development in one of our local cities you probably are completely unaware of its existence. This organization, a collaboration of local hotels, attractions, cities and partners, is a year-round effort to bring visitors to Conejo Valley. These visitors stay in our hotels, shop in our stores and eat at our restaurants – paying taxes all along the way. It’s a great way for Conejo Valley cities to increase the tax base without raising taxes on residents.

Idea Conception The idea of tourism districts is not unique to Conejo Valley. There are also tourism districts in Simi Valley, Camarillo, Oxnard, Ventura, Santa Clarita and pretty much any other community you have ever been to in California. In fact, there are close to 100 tourism districts in California as of this writing. If you have ever seen an advertisement or website for “Visit Name-a-City” that is a tourism district. They have been around a long time in major tourism destinations like San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The CVTID was formed in 2013. The process required petitioning of a majority of the local hotels followed by approval of local city councils. The group was organized into a board of directors made up of hotels, the Chamber of Commerce, local cities, local attractions and partners. Together the group oversees marketing efforts to potential visitors.

Why visit the Conejo Valley? You might have been asking this question since you started reading this article. The Conejo Valley has developed a reputation as a nice, quiet place to raise a family. Who would want to spend their vacation here? Honestly, the number one driver of tourism to Conejo Valley isn’t vacations. It’s business travel. The Conejo Valley business community is fortunate to be the home of the headquarters of many major US companies. These include Amgen, Shire (formerly Baxter Healthcare), Dole Packaged Foods, Pleasant Holidays, the Los Angeles Rams and Easton to name a few. These companies utilize local hotels to house employees and partners who engage in business with them.

Other Types of Travelers Besides business travel, there are other types of groups we work to attract to the Conejo Valley. In fact, the CVTID works to attract five different types of travelers: business, weddings, sports, outdoor adventure and leisure. With each specific type of traveler, we use a different technique to reach them. For instance, we determined that weddings are a huge driver of travel to the Conejo Valley. With the slow-growth laws that have been in place since the 1990s, we are lucky enough to have beautiful scenic hillsides that have led the way for many great outdoor wedding venues such as Calamigos Ranch and Lobo Castle. In order to increase our wedding business we started with the basics. Our website at Conejo.com/ Weddings has a list of venues, hotels, vendors and many other things brides and wedding planners may need to plan a wedding. Secondly, we developed a targeted online marketing campaign that brings the brides-to-be to our website and

shows them all of the resources we offer. Finally, we send staff from our tourism district to bridal shows in Los Angeles and Orange Counties to meet with brides directly and tell them about the 30 beautiful wedding venues in Conejo Valley.

Tourism Marketing is working You can hardly notice it as a local resident or business owner, but the results of our tourism efforts have shown that we have been very successful. There are two ways that a hotel can measure its success: occupancy (how full the hotel is) and room rate (how much you charge for a room). The CVTID has seen strong growth on both of these categories. According to Smith Travel Research, who tracks data on hotel occupancy and room rates, Conejo Valley occupancy was 81.8 percent, which is 6.7 percent growth compared to a year before. Also, the average hotel room rate in Conejo Valley was $132.32 in 2016, compared to $118.83 for the prior year. Local cities are also seeing the increase in tax revenue. The cities of Thousand Oaks and Agoura Hills who participate in the Tourism District charge a tax for each night a person stays in a hotel. The City of Thousand Oaks collected $3,918,372 in transient occupancy tax during the 2014-2015 budget year – the most recent on record. That is an increase of 11.04 percent over the prior year. That money, which costs the local taxpayers nothing to generate, can be used to repave roads, support public services, or whatever else the local government decides it needs. The story is similar in Agoura Hills. During the 2014-2015 budget year Agoura Hills collected $2,244,728 in transient occupancy tax, an increase of 5.33 percent over the previous year. CV: What are some challenges you’ve faced?

Angel Robertson: I am a lifetime resident of Thousand Oaks and am proud to call the Conejo Valley my home.

AR: One of the challenges I faced early on was ﬁring a couple of employees who I considered friends. I held the value and importance of integrity above the risk of losing them as friends. I stayed strong and did the right thing, but it was a challenge that I learned from.

CV: Bill Dallas, founder of Dallas Capital, refers to you as his boss; how did you became General Manager of this diverse company at such a young age? AR: Wow, I would like to know how/why. God? Fate? It was one of the biggest blessings to meet Bill Dallas at a young age. He had just relocated his business from Northern California. I was referred to him by my youth pastor to babysit. In 2003, Bill was looking for an executive assistant; I learned on the job how to handle all the diﬀerent aspects of Dallas Capital. This is, and continues to be, an amazing journey. CV: What qualities did Bill Dallas saw in you that made him conﬁdent of your success? AR: I would like to think Bill saw my positive, get it done attitude and resourcefulness as key qualities that would help me to become a strong business partner and manager for his team. Bill serves from the heart and I feel that I’ve done my best to do so as well.

CV: When you hire someone, what are the must-have qualities you look for? AR: Integrity, passion, team player, sense of humor, loyalty, someone who wants to make a diﬀerence. CV: Who are your heroes? Why? AR: My parents, Suzi and Wayne. They adopted me when I was days old from Mexico and raised me in the most beautiful city. I’m so thankful that they have always been so supportive and taught me to do my best. I can’t imagine what my life would be without them. My Dad passed away when I was 18 years old and I told him how grateful and thankful I was for everything. My Mom is my best friend and because of the unbelievable woman she is, I am the woman I am today. CV: What are you most proud of? AR: I’m most proud of staying true to my values. While growing up I’ve been fortunate to have had many mentors and friends who have helped me on my path. I’ve always welcomed their wisdom but continued to listen to my heart and intuition. CV: What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? AR: Find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life. People spend so much of their life at work; I’m so grateful I’m on a superb team and love what I do.

FIVE CYBERSECURITY CHALLENGES FOR YOUR SMALL BUSINESS AND HOW TO OVERCOME THEM By Ash Sobhe, CEO, R6S

Do you know what a phisher is? It’s a fake website that looks very close to a well-known real website. For example, someone could create a fake website for Wells Fargo that used a capital “I” instead of the lowercase “L” in the web address. These two letters look exactly the same if you type them into a URL search bar, which means the average person wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the two URLs and would be unintentionally giving the fake website their username and password when they try to access their online bank accounts. Finding out about all the common phishing hacks out there is the first step to protecting yourself.

Are you prepared for a hack? What if your clients’ data is breached? Do you know what the latest hacks and scams are?

Why do some companies get hacked or tracked over others? Is it because they’re an e-commerce company that collects credit card information from customers? Is it a company or entity that houses sensitive information on political figures or celebrities? Is it because they’re a bank or a credit union that has access to people’s money? Yes, the likelihood of companies like the ones above getting their emails, websites or servers hacked is higher than if you’re a small advertising company without an e-commerce option. Assessing if your company is vulnerable to a cybersecurity threat is the first step to figuring out how to meet cybersecurity challenges head on.

2. Responsibility

Some small businesses are now responsible for their own cybersecurity needs. In the past if a business got hacked the business owner would not be held liable for any data that was breached through the hack. This is no longer the case, clients can now sue businesses that get hacked for being negligent with their cybersecurity protocol and the FTC can also place consequences on companies for getting hacked. This means that business owners now have to be even more vigilant with their cybersecurity 16 | ConejoView

When your server is vulnerable to hacks, hackers can get into your back-end and change information on your website. The organization Anonymous is famous for this. They change hate-fueled websites to reflect the opposite instead. While the intent of Anonymous is noble, the intent of most hackers who do this isn’t. Hackers can change links on your website to redirect to a different, unauthorized payment system, or alter copy and details on your company website to change the meaning of your mission or vision.

5. It’s All About Email

Phishing scams are rampant and hackers are waiting for the right opportunity to send out an email to make money. Phishers can create a fake email address that looks very similar to a person or company’s real address. Alternatively, a hacker can hack into vulnerable email servers and send these emails directly from the person’s email address. Hacking into emails is a huge advantage for hackers because not only can they use your email to solicit money from contacts but they can also access bank account information and passwords stored in your email address.

So what you can do to protect yourself and prevent your private data from being breached?

Here are a few solutions: 1. Knowledge is Power

The first step to making sure your business is protected from threats is to find out what these threats are, what exactly can be done to protect you from these threats as well as eliminate threats should they penetrate your defenses. Start by looking for keywords online and peek-in on what security professionals are talking about. Begin by looking at broad terms and then narrow it down to focus on your specific area. This will help you plug-into the latest APT, data breaches, software updates and more.

2. The Importance of Collaboration

If you have a cybersecurity department or provider, you must understand that cybersecurity in general is all about collaboration. If you put in the work to study common hacks and are able to identify where your company needs the most protection, your cybersecurity solution will be able to better provide that protection.

3. Studying Everyday Data

Making sure your company data is looked at everyday by cybersecurity experts can ensure that if a breach does occur, the discrepancy will stand out and be caught in time. Staying vigilant and having a plan in case your security is breached will help your company meet growing cybersecurity challenges in the long run. With the beginning of every New Year, comes new state laws. So far, 2017 has been a year of change with Governor Jerry Brown signing 898 new California Laws, two of which have become law without his signature. Here are a few of the new laws we think will affect most California residents and businesses.

Marijuana was Legalized

Cellphones are off limits while driving

Minimum wage keeps going up

With the passage of Proposition 64, California voters have legalized the use of marijuana for adults aged 21 and older. A person may only do so in private places (like their residence, not at work or in public) and can possess up to 28 grams of marijuana. Marijuana dispensaries will not be able to obtain license to sell marijuana until 2018.

California Legislators passed Assembly Bill 1785, which makes it an infraction to touch your phone while operating your car. It doesn’t matter if you are talking, texting, Facebooking, googling or nothing at all – holding your phone in your car is a crime.

Legislators passed a step program for minimum wage in 2016. The legislation calls for an increase to $10.50 for 2017, $11.00 in 2018 and an additional $1.00 each year until it caps out at $15 per hour in 2022. As a compromise to limit the impact on smaller businesses, the raises are delayed by 1 year if your company employs less than 26 people.

Businesses are still allowed to require a drug-free workplace. This means they can still test for marijuana before hiring someone, or can fire someone for being high on marijuana at work (much like being drunk at work), so long as they do not have a prescription for marijuana. It’s also unclear if the federal government will commence enforcement of federal drug laws in states where marijuana has been legalized, like California. 22 | ConejoView

There is one exception: in order to accommodate applications that provide directions like Waze or Google Maps, you are allowed one swipe or one tap to activate or deactivate a feature. All phones must be properly mounted onto the vehicles dashboard or windshield so that it doesn’t hinder your view of the road and you don’t have to reach over your center console to swipe it.

You find new passion in making Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite snack food, popcorn, into a thriving and upbeat retail store. That is exactly what Alden and Barbara Sheets did in 2014. After being President of some of the biggest names in sports clothing such as FILA, Puma and K-Swiss, Alden found that he no longer wanted to be involved in the corporate world. He and his wife have always loved popcorn and noticed a trend toward healthier snack foods. They spent months researching popcorn stores and found that there was a lack of them in the LA/Ventura County area. Non-Profit “My son was moody since he was a baby. By elementary school, his behavior at home was disruptive and disheartening on a daily basis. He was evaluated by several therapists over the years. No one said anything about mental illness. I was told that since he had friends and did well in school, nothing was wrong. Not until his 12th grade year, when problems surfaced at school and he fell into a major depression, did a diagnosis of bipolar disorder even get suggested.

his is not an uncommon scenario. One in five Americans, children included, live with a mental illness. There is help. There is hope. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is the largest grassroots organization in the United States that advocates for services for persons with mental illness and their family members. NAMI Ventura County, a non-profit 501(c)(3), is our local affiliate located in Camarillo. The purpose of NAMI is to advocate for and provide support and crisis resources to those affected by neurological disorders including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, major depression, borderline personality disorder, OCD, panic disorder, severe anxiety disorder and co-occurring brain disorders and addictive disorders. Our services to the community include: crisis outreach, consumer and family support services, sharing and education, families helping families, community awareness building and collaboration and advocacy.

Education: Parents and Teachers as Allies is designed for teachers, administrators and other staff members to learn about the early warning signs of mental illness in children and adolescents and how they can access resources for students they are concerned about. Ending the Silence teaches high school students about the early warning signs of mental illness as well as educates them about the importance of erasing the stigma associated with mental illness in our society.

The Friends in the Lobby program is offered at both Hillmont and Vista Del Mar inpatient psychiatric hospitals. NAMI has tables in the lobbies of these sites where resources, guidance, and support are offered to persons coming to see family members or friends who have been admitted. These volunteers have had family members or friends at inpatient hospitals and they are well aware of the challenges associated with having a loved one who needs inpatient treatment. Some of the volunteers have lived experience of being hospitalized.

Advocacy:

In Our Own Voice is presented to college students and other community members by people who have made tremendous progress in their own recovery from mental illness. This is a powerful anti-stigma tool to change hearts, minds, and attitudes about mental illness and an opportunity for people diagnosed with a mental illness to gain self-confidence, self-esteem, and income while serving as role models for the community.

Support: NAMI offers many support groups and classes at multiple locations in Ventura County in both English and Spanish. These groups are facilitated by trained volunteers. Connections is a support group for persons who have a mental health diagnosis. This group meets twice a month and is facilitated by a person who has a mental health diagnosis. Family-to-Family is a 12-session class for family members or friends of people who are affected by serious mental illness and teach them how to best support them. The course was written by experienced family member and mental health professionals, and is taught by family members who have completed the course and are specially trained to teach the course to others. Provider Education Program is a 5-session class designed to assist people who work in the treatment field or a related field such as residential care givers, R.N.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, homeless rehabilitation and job counselors etc. Attendees learn more about how to work with persons with mental illness and what resources are available in Ventura County. Peer-to-Peer is a 10-session class co-taught by two people with mental illness who are well grounded in their recovery. This class is for people who are on a good path towards recovery who can learn new techniques to stay focused on their efforts.

NAMI Ventura County advocates with local legislators for proposed bills that will increase services for persons with mental illness. Staff members and volunteers attend meetings throughout the county to discuss treatment services. NAMI also advocates for housing for persons with mental illness. This type of housing is in short supply in our county. NAMI depends on the efforts of volunteers to teach classes, facilitate support groups, and help with special events that are held each year. There is never any charge for any NAMI services and that is possible largely because of the annual NAMI Walk fundraising event that takes place on the first Saturday in May. The walk raises awareness about mental health issues and helps erase the stigma associated with mental illness. The 2017 Walk will be held at the Ventura Beach Promenade on May 6 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. contact NAMI Ventura County if you are interested in becoming an event sponsor or would like to participate in a Walk team.
