This modernization project will be completed in phases and be completed while school activities are in session. The first two phases of the project, including the renovation of the existing administration building, two classroom buildings, and the food services building were completed this past summer. The exterior building components and various site work remains in progress along with the next phase of the project, which includes the construction of a new science classroom building and the renovation of another classroom wing. The overall modernization project will be completed in summer of 2018.

RENOVATION UPDATE PART 2 Submitted by: Patrick Cisneros, Director Facilities Services and Mary Perry, Public Information Officer

While the four projects detailed in the last update are the most extensive, work is always underway at the district’s soon-to-be 35 schools. Outdoor maintenance takes place on a daily basis and classroom enhancements continue to put Desert Sands Unified School District in the forefront of 21st century teaching and learning.

The last Desert Sands Unified School District (DSUSD) update article provided information on two elementary schools. In Part II of the update, we take a look at two secondary school revitalization projects. Work on Indio High School, one of the oldest schools in DSUSD, was planned as a multi-phase project of 300,000 square feet, including eight new buildings, new pool facilities, and new baseball and softball fields. Phase I began in June 2011, with demolition of old buildings following the relocation of classrooms to portable structures on property lent to the district by the City of Indio. Rough grading and the updating of underground utilities was complete and construction of new buildings began in June 2012. This new construction included the gymnasium, the science classroom building, administration building, and performing arts center. All of the buildings are state-of-the-art education facilities. With the exception of the performing arts center, these buildings were completed in December 2014, with students occupying the buildings after winter break. The performing arts center was opened in June 2015. Phase 2 of the Indio High School project began in January 2015 and was completed in December 2016. Phase 2 included a new library, food service building, arts building, career technical education building, and a general education classroom building. Phase 3 began in July 2017 and will be completed in early 2018. This phase consists of the reconstruction of the baseball and softball fields. Phase 3 will be the final phase of the overall modernization project at this site. The La Quinta Middle School project is funded with allocations from Measure KK passed in November 2014. This exciting project includes a new campus entry giving the site a renewed appearance. All buildings on this campus will include a complete modernization. All classroom improvements include upgraded technology standards. The new state-ofthe-art science building with outdoor learning space gives a new home to the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) program on campus, along with support spaces, such as maker spaces and art classrooms. This project includes an updated library and media center. A new fitness center is incorporated into this project and will give students a space for indoor activities to support the ongoing health and wellness program on campus. The existing administration building will also be renovated and reorganized to support a single point of entry and to provide secured access onto the campus.

HOW TO PREVENT FALSE ALARMS Submitted by: DK Systems

You have an alarm system to keep you and your loved ones safe. When your system reports an alarm, emergency services are dispatched. Because false alarms take first responders away from actual emergencies, many cities assess fines for false alarms. They can also lead neighbors ignoring your alarm.

APRILLL LLLL

The vast majority of false alarms are due to human error, so here are some tips to prevent them:

CIVICCCENTERRPARK KKKKKKCALLEETAMPICOO LAAQUINTAAACAAAAAA

· Know how to arm/disarm your alarm system. · Provide guests/employees with training to operate the alarm system, making special arrangements for service personal/technicians. · Know how to cancel an alarm. · Know the phone number for the central station, and remember your pass code with them. · The central station will call the contact list, so keep your contact information current. · Use pet-friendly devices or limit pet access to certain areas. · Watch for objects near motion detectors. · Replace batteries in wireless devices. · If re-entering the premise, don’t assume the exit delay is long enough, disarm the system. · Dust your devices. · Purchase a quality system installed by professionals - misaligned sensors, technical issues, and poorly made devices can contribute to false alarms. · The main battery in an alarm system will typically last five years. Routine maintenance can ensure the equipment is working properly and help prevent false alarms from occurring.

LA QUINTA ARTS FESTIVAL® ACHIEVES #1 NATIONAL RANKING Eisenhower

La Quinta Arts Festival® has been designated as the #1 Fine Art Show in the Nation by the prestigious Art Fair SourceBook in 2018, the definitive guide to the best juried arts and craft fairs in the United States. “La Quinta Arts Festival® is the best of the best,” stated Greg Lawler, Publisher of the Art Fair Source Book. “Top sales numbers, along with the quality of the experience earns La Quinta a well-deserved number one national ranking — and all in THE most beautiful setting for an art fair anywhere!”

IS HERE

Eisenhower Urgent Care

Food poisoning. Bad sprain. Cactus needles. Having us nearby can help you feel better already.

How do you get to be the #1 Fine Art Festival in the Nation? La Quinta Arts Foundation President/CEO Christi Salamone responds, “Over 35 years of hard work striving to optimally showcase the nation’s finest artists and their magnificent work. It takes a stunning venue, an army of dedicated volunteers, and the art patrons who return annually to appreciate and purchase art.”

LIFE HAPPENS. And not always at the most convenient time. That’s where Eisenhower Urgent Care comes in. With locations in Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, and La Quinta, we provide expert care on a walk-in basis. Not sure whether to visit our Emergency Department or Urgent Care? Download our handy fact sheet at emc.org/urgenttips.

In 1982, with the backdrop of the majestic Santa Rosa Mountains as their inspiration, a small group of civic leaders envisioned that the newly formed City of La Quinta could become the cultural and artistic center of the Coachella Valley. The key step to realizing that dream transpired that same year with the creation of La Quinta Arts Foundation, whose first task was to launch an annual arts festival in a village-like atmosphere that would attract working artisans and visitors to this quiet desert community. The following March, 50 artists, including celebrity artist, Red Skelton, along with 1,476 people attended the first “Celebration of the Arts.” Deemed an immediate success at its debut, La Quinta Arts Foundation’s first public art show quickly evolved to become “La Quinta Arts Festival,” La Quinta’s premier annual event. La Quinta Arts Festival® has since grown from its humble beginnings, now presenting 220 artists to more than 20,000 patrons. La Quinta Arts Festival® 2017 set an all-time record for art sales, exceeding $3.2 million. It is no wonder the event is high on the radar of artists from across the United States and the world seeking the ultimate opportunity to exhibit their work. It is clear that the founding fathers’ original vision to entice artists and residents to La Quinta has come to pass. The flagship program for the nonprofit La Quinta Arts Foundation, proceeds from La Quinta Arts Festival® have funded $1.3 million dollars in visual art college scholarships to Coachella Valley students.

WHAT NEW CHILDREN’S HEALTH SERVICES WILL MEAN FOR THE COACHELLA VALLEY

locally

enjoyed.

Submitted by: Richard H. Hart Health care is a hot topic nationwide — we all need it, but unfortunately not everyone has access to it, which is why Loma Linda University Children’s Health is eager to open its doors in the Coachella Valley in 2018. More so now than ever as the need for health care in the area is rapidly increasing. Indio Outpatient Clinic There are nearly 100,000 children under the age of 17 living in the Coachella Valley, all of whom require — at the very least — annual well checks, vaccinations and dental care. However, 11 percent of the valley’s children have not seen a health care provider in the past year, mostly because of long wait times or limited access. To get around this, families are forced to commute beyond their neighborhoods to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital and other facilities so that their children and infants suffering from the common cold to rare health conditions can get the care they require. Over the past decade, Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital received more than 17,000 inpatient and outpatient visits from the Coachella Valley.

49-499 EISENHOWER DRIVE, LA QUINTA | 760.564.7600 | OPENTABLE.COM

The need for adequate and accessible health care is imperative. At Loma Linda University Children’s Health, we believe that one of the keys to healing is meeting the specific health needs of the communities that we serve. We take this challenge very seriously. Our investment in pediatric health care for Coachella’s tiniest lives can lead to a significant impact on the region’s ability to grow and have a boundless future. • • • • • •

The development of our new outpatient facility, located in downtown Indio, is scheduled to open in early 2018. It will accommodate as many as 60,000 visits each year for conditions that are prevalent in the Coachella Valley. Common conditions include asthma, which has been diagnosed in nearly 13,000 kids, and obesity, with has been diagnosed in nearly half of the pediatric population, according to the 2016 HARC Coachella Valley Community Health Survey.

Full-Service, Small Animal Veterinary Hospital Comprehensive Medical, Surgical & Dental Care Preventative Care • Nutrition Consultants Animal Rehabilitation with Underwater Treadmill Behavioral Consultations • Boarding • Grooming Regenerative Medicine • Exotic Pets Welcome

We will also team up with our partner, Social Action Community Health System (SACHS), to offer families comprehensive primary and urgent care regardless of insurance coverage. More than one-third of Coachella Valley children live in homes that fall at or below the Federal Poverty Line. With a growing population of children, the Coachella Valley requires many more physicians to provide the superior level of care these children need and deserve. This new outpatient facility will help to fill this dramatic need by adding primary and specialty care from a top children’s hospital right in your own back yard. We look forward to bringing hope through healing to the kids and their families with these new offerings and Loma Linda University Children’s Health – Indio. —Richard H. 2018 CAREERBUILDER CHALLENGE OFFERS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Attention all golf, music, and food and wine fans – get ready for the 2018 CareerBuilder Challenge, the desert’s annual PGA TOUR event, coming to La Quinta, January 17-21. This year is all about the fan experience; with the addition of new hospitality options and an after play concert series – no upgraded tickets needed! In addition to five days of world class golf featuring some of the top players on the PGA TOUR, all fans will enjoy three on-course food and beverage venues on the final three holes of the Stadium course at PGA WEST, including the VONS Fan Pavilion, Casamigos Club 17, and Michelob Ultra Beers Fore Birdies. All Friday and Saturday ticketed fans will be admitted to the CareerBuilder Challenge Concert Series presented by H.N. and Francis C. Berger Foundation. Huey Lewis and the News performs Friday, and Goo Goo Dolls on Saturday. Concerts start at approximately 4:30 p.m. on the Stadium Course driving range. Daily tickets are only $30, and a weekly badge is $75. The CareerBuilder Challenge officially began in 1960, when a group of country club VIPs created the Palm Springs Golf Classic. Arnold Palmer was the first champion, bringing instant excitement and credibility to this newly formed event. The Palm Springs Golf Classic attracted the biggest celebrities of the day to play in the tournament’s proam, including Bing Crosby, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Frank Sinatra, and Bob Hope. Desert Classic Charities, the organization that operated the event, made charitable giving an integral part of the event. In 1965, Bob Hope lent his name to the Classic, and teamed up with former President Dwight Eisenhower to build a hospital in the desert through funds raised from the tournament. Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage became “the hospital that golf built.” Celebrities and sports stars continued to be a part of the event for the next several decades. In 1995, history was made when sitting President Bill Clinton teed it up with Presidents George Bush and Gerald Ford during the tournament’s opening round, attracting 25,000 spectators. In 2016, CareerBuilder became the title sponsor of this nearly 60-year old event. Today, Golf Hall of Famer and 42time PGA TOUR champion Phil Mickelson is the tournament ambassador and two-time winner of the CareerBuilder Challenge. The CareerBuilder Challenge continues the important mission of raising charitable dollars through the event’s beneficiary, Desert Classic Charities, with over $59 million donated to local non-profits since 1960. GOLF INJURIES: WHY DO THEY HAPPEN? HOW TO FIX THEM! Submitted by: Michael K Butler

Golfers spend 4 days a week playing, hours watching golf shows, and weeks reading books to hit the ball a few extra yards. You can do all of the above, but if you can’t rotate, keep your swing plane, or bend over without losing your balance, none of it will help! Eventually, the body breaks down, and injuries will follow. As a result of having poor posture, tight hips, and a weak lower back, most golfers bend from the lower back instead of their hips. If you aren’t bending correctly, then you won’t rotate, leading to back problems. Stretching the hips, neck, shoulders, and spine on a regular basis will help. An effective exercise is to place a 7 iron behind your back; as you bend forward, don’t allow the iron to leave your spine. Wrist and Elbow overuse injuries like tendonitis, tenosynovitis, and wrist sprains can be prevented by working on your swing plane, flexibility, and grip strength. Golfers who don’t finish to the target aren’t rotating enough. This can result in spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal cord. Bending backwards while standing or experiencing difficulty walking are possible signs of stenosis. Again, working on your flexibility and technique are crucial if you are experiencing these problems. If you are getting tingling down your leg, referred to as sciatica, you should see your physician. Treatment for these injuries involves working with a physical therapist who understands golf biomechanics or an Active Release Practitioner. POSTER ARTIST ANNOUNCED FOR 36TH LA QUINTA ARTS FESTIVAL – MARCH 1-4, 2018

Over the past decade she has developed a unique, minimalist technique of placing impasto paint strokes without layering, which she has coined “OpenImpressionism”. She transforms these landscapes into abstract mosaics of color and texture, her impasto application of paint lending a sculptural effect to her art.

La Quinta Arts Foundation is delighted to announce the selection of Erin Hanson as the Official Poster Artist for the 36th annual La Quinta Arts Festival. Erin’s selected artwork, a landscape oil painting of the Santa Rosa Mountains, pays tribute to our beautiful host City of La Quinta. Her vibrant style, brings a fresh, dramatic look at our unique desert landscape while capturing its essence. Inspired by rock climbing and the southern California desert, she has spent almost a decade painting the dramatic scenery of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. “I love to capture the moments when early morning light peeks through and lights everything up in sherbets, lavenders and ice cream colors,” said Erin. “I want others to experience the drama and excitement of the landscape like I do.” Erin began painting as a young girl, voraciously learning oils, acrylics, watercolor, pen and ink, pastels, and life drawing from accomplished art instructors. She received her first painting commission requests at age ten, and by age twelve, she was employed by a mural studio after school, learning the techniques of acrylics on

Being preapproved also puts you in a better position in a competitive market because it shows you have your finances in order. What is amortization?

FREQUENTLY ASKED MORTGAGE QUESTIONS Submitted by: Jeff Fishbein

Does the term “amortization” leave you perplexed? Are you unsure how preapproval differs from prequalification? If so, you’re not alone. Here are some mortgage basics to help you become more familiar with the process. What’s the difference between prequalification and preapproval? Getting prequalified is often the first step when searching for a home. You supply basic financial information, such as your income, assets and debts, and the lender then provides a preliminary estimate of the amount for which you may qualify.

Amortization is the process of paying off a home loan’s principal and interest over time within a consistent, planned repayment schedule. In the beginning, a large portion of each payment goes toward interest, but as the loan matures, larger amounts go toward paying down the principal. What types of loans are there? Fixed and adjustable rate mortgages operate as their respective names imply. The former has a rate that stays the same for the life of the loan. The latter’s rate may start low, but it can increase after a predetermined period or depending on market conditions. Government-guaranteed mortgages include FHA and VA loans. These are usually easier to qualify for and typically require lower down payments than other types of loans. SURVIVE A SALES TAX AUDIT IN 3 STEPS Submitted by: Samantha Lopez, Accountant

It’s a five-letter word that can send chills down your spine: audit. But an audit doesn’t have to be a disaster that derails your business. Understanding why and when sales tax audits happen – and what to expect when they do – is the best way to weather the storm when your company is chosen. If you have been selected for a sales tax audit, you’ll likely find out through a letter that explains the terms of the audit, requests a call or a meeting, and includes a preliminary list of requested documents. Here are three tips for making it through the process in one piece. 1. Submit Thorough Documentation Providing clear and complete information is of primary importance. Ledgers that the auditor might want to review include: Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, General Ledger, and Federal Income Tax Returns. 2. Hire A Professional Navigating the rules, regulations, and mountains of paperwork that come with any audit is no easy task. Hiring a trustworthy tax professional to oversee each stage of the audit could make all the difference. 3. Plan For Future Audits Whatever the outcome, the next step is to do everything you can to avoid – or simplify – any future audits. Osborne Rincon CPAs has helped hundreds of businesses successfully navigate the audit process. Students filled the performing arts center for a lecture by Dr. Scherger, who reminded the students that they are studying to be a part of an occupation that truly needs them. Medicine, especially the study of nutrition and health, is a growing field and professionals are needed in all areas from doctors to lab technicians.

HANS ACADEMY NOVEMBER EVENTS

The message was clear: “Don’t poison your body.” He spoke of addictions, including sugar, and reminded students that the human body is designed to be active. Dr. Scherger will remain a part of the advisory board to assist Jason and Lourdes with the HANS Academy. Additional speakers on nutrition and preventative methods are scheduled for later in the year to add to the more than a dozen healthcare professionals who have spoken to the students since September.

November was a busy month at Indio High School’s HANS Academy (Health and Nutritional Services). Part of the IHS CTE (career technical education) program, HANS provides specialized health career training for over 200 students, 10% of the school’s student body. Dedicated to the concept of wellness in addition to health care, teachers Jason Tate and Lourdes Flores provide not only classroom instruction but also continued opportunities for students to participate in the real world of the health profession. In November, HANS Academy students had the opportunity to take a CPR/ AED BLS class, become HIPAA Certified, participate in a “farmers market” with FIND Food Bank, and welcome Eisenhower Hospital’s Vice President of Primary Care Dr. Joseph Scherger.

4 TIPS FOR CHOOSING YOUR MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT

March 1-4, 2018

Submitted by: Randy Foulds

When you are approaching your 65th birthday, it seems like the junk mail will never end. You can choose to read through all the Medicare plan advertising pieces, or ignore them. You can ask your friends what plan they have, you can research online, but the final decision is still yours to make. Here is what I think you should keep in mind. Plan level benefits are standardized by Medicare. F plans offer the most complete coverage. With Medicare parts A and B, plus a supplemental F plan, you have full coverage of all Medicare approved expenses. But this might be over insurance for some people in which case, a G plan or N plan might be better. In exchange for a lower premium, you give up coverage of some expenses, but those costs are fixed and predictable. Once enrolled, you can always change your Medicare supplement if you can pass medical underwriting. In other words, your health history will be screened, and you could be denied. Each year on your birthday though, you have 30 days to change your plan to a similar plan, or a plan with fewer benefits. Because of this, we advise that you start with the most coverage you can afford, and downgrade later if the premiums get too high. Once you choose your level of coverage, you need to pick which insurer to enroll with. I suggest considering the following 4 factors in choosing your Medicare supplement insurer. • How long have they done business in California? You want them to have a solid history in our state. • Are there rates reasonable? They may not be the lowest, but should be lower than the average. • How stable are their rates, year to year? Large increases in the past might suggest future rate hikes. • And finally, how good is their customer and broker support? Your broker or agent should be able to get them on the phone easily to resolve billing, enrollment and benefit issues. This varies widely from one insurer to another and can also change year to year. And you should also be able to call your insurer and get timely answers.

Remember, you don’t have to be concerned about whether your doctor is in network or not. Any provider in the country that accepts Medicare assignment must also accept your Medicare supplement. In most cases, they will bill Medicare directly, then Medicare coordinates the benefits with your supplement. No HMO or PPO provider networks to worry about.
