PGA TOUR’s Charity of the Year Named for The American Express® 2025 Tournament
Story by: GCVCC Staff
In a year of extraordinary achievements, The Ophelia Project has been named the PGA TOUR’s 2024 Charity of the Year, a significant honor that underscores its transformative impact on young girls in the Coachella Valley. The recognition comes as The American Express®, one of the PGA TOUR’s premier events, prepares for its 66th edition in January 2025, with commitments from a stellar roster of players including Xander Schauffele, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, and rising 17-year-old talent Blades Brown.
The Ophelia Project, a mentoring initiative under the John F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation, provides invaluable support, education, and mentorship to 400-500 girls annually in grades 8 through 12. This comprehensive, five-year program equips participants with the tools they
need to graduate high school, pursue higher education, and embark on successful careers. Since its founding, more than 7,000 girls have completed the program, achieving an extraordinary 100% graduation rate.
“We are truly honored and overwhelmed with gratitude to be selected by the PGA TOUR as its Charity of the Year,” said Peter Sturgeon, President and CEO of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation. “This prestigious honor will enable us to provide vulnerable teenage girls in the Coachella Valley with the mentorship they need to achieve their dreams.”
In addition to generous donations from The American Express® tournament’s Impact Through Golf Foundation, The Ophelia Project will receive an additional $30,000 from the PGA TOUR. This funding will further expand the program’s
reach and enhance its resources for girls navigating the challenges of adolescence.
Impact Through Golf: A Legacy of Giving
The American Express®, a tournament known for its dual focus on worldclass golf and community impact, has long supported local nonprofits in the Coachella Valley. Since its inception in 1960, the event has contributed over $66 million to organizations focusing on education, health, family support, and youth development. In 2024, 16 charities, including The Ophelia Project, received funding from the tournament’s charitable arm.
Frank Marzano, Chairman of the Impact Through Golf Foundation, emphasized the importance of supporting organizations like The Ophelia Project. “When the Board and I met with some of

the young women The Ophelia Project has supported, we were moved by their stories of resilience and success. The national recognition of their work validates the program’s importance to our community.”
Adding to this momentum, Peter Sturgeon has also been selected to participate in the 2024 American Express Leadership Academy, an initiative for nonprofit leaders who are making a significant difference in their sectors. This opportunity positions The Ophelia Project to continue innovating and enhancing its services for years to come.
Schauffele, currently ranked No. 2 in the world, had a standout 2024 season, winning both the PGA Championship and the Open Championship. Known for his consistency, he boasts the longest active streak of consecutive cuts made on the PGA TOUR. Finau, a six-time PGA TOUR winner, remains a fan favorite with a series of top finishes, including a T3 at the
2024 U.S. Open. Fowler, a Southern California native and six-time PGA TOUR winner, brings a strong local connection and a storied career to the field.
Blades Brown, the 2024 Rolex Junior Player of the Year, is poised to make waves. Brown’s accolades include becoming the third player in history to earn medalist honors at both the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Junior, joining legendary names like Tiger Woods. His inclusion adds a layer of intrigue as fans watch the 17-year-old compete among the world’s best.
An All-Star Field Gears Up for The American Express® 2025
The excitement surrounding the tournament extends beyond its charitable contributions, with a dynamic player field promising an unforgettable event. Tournament Executive Director Pat McCabe announced commitments from top-ranked players Xander Schauffele, Tony Finau, and Rickie Fowler, along with young phenom Blades Brown, who will make his professional debut at the event.
Fans can expect not only thrilling golf but also a robust lineup of communitycentered activities. Daily tickets start at $60 and include admission to public venues and concerts featuring Little Big Town on Friday and Journey on Saturday.
American Express® Card Members receive a 20% discount on tickets, and children 15 and under can access the tournament grounds for free with a paid adult admission. Tickets are available at www.theamexgolf.com.
“With commitments from stars like Schauffele, Finau, and Fowler, alongside emerging talent like Brown, The American Express® promises to be a thrilling showcase of world-class golf,” said McCabe. “This mix of established veterans and rising stars highlights the depth and excitement of this year’s field.”
Event Details and Community Celebration
The 66th edition of The American Express® will take place from January 1619, 2025, at PGA WEST’s Pete Dye Stadium Course (host course) and Nicklaus Tournament Course, as well as La Quinta Country Club.
As the Coachella Valley gears up for one of its most anticipated annual events, The American Express® serves as a shining example of how sport can unite a community, inspire young talent, and drive lasting change. With The Ophelia Project receiving welldeserved recognition and support, and golf’s brightest stars ready to compete, the 2025 tournament promises to be a celebration of excellence—on and off the course.

A New Year’s resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western World but also found in the Eastern World, in which a person resolves to continue good practices, change an undesired trait or behavior, accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their behavior at the beginning of a calendar year. And who doesn’t like to commit to a good challenge, built to kick off the New Year just right? Just be sure you don’t set-yourself-up to fail! And we have found most of our personal goals fall into these three categories:
DARE TO CARE For a Sustainable Gem of the Desert
Story by: City of La Quinta Staff
Surrounded by some of the country’s most beautiful natural landscapes, built amid historic and striking architecture, La Quinta is a destination defined by its beauty – inside and out. A commitment to protecting that for generations to come
is one of the City’s Sacred Values.
La Quinta has long been a leader in recycling with near-100% participation by our businesses.
While our businesses and residents are committed to protecting our environment through recycling and energysaving efforts, we want our visitors to be equally engaged and understand why it is crucial.
To help, the City has launched a new campaign, “Dare to Care,” to educate and encourage visitors to the “Gem of the Desert” to do all they can to help protect our environment.
The goal of the campaign is to help bring awareness to reducing waste and making
sustainable living a part of everyday life. Visitors choose to come to La Quinta for the natural beauty and vibrant community.
“We know how much visitors love La Quinta and we want to make sure it stays incredible for generations to come.” said Marcie Graham, Marketing Manager for the City.
Helping the Environment, Encouraging Active Living
The City has taken steps to reduce its carbon footprint with roundabouts and road diets, and where possible converted turf to desert scape at parks, medians and buildings including City Hall.
In 2023 in La Quinta:
• 4,475.64 tons of organic materials were kept out of the landfill by residents.
• 4,520.25 tons of organics were kept from landfills by businesses.
• 3,142.76 tons of recyclables were diverted from the landfill by residents.
• 925.15 tons of recyclables were diverted from the landfill by businesses.
Last year, in six months, 350 residents participated in a free residential curbside household hazardous waste (HHW) collection service started by the City in partnership with Burrtec. La Quinta continues to work with Burrtec to expand awareness and participation.
As a Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) City, La Quinta offers a vast array of inviting reasons to get outdoors, soak up some sun and our gorgeous views.
For starters, there are hiking and biking trails for all levels of outdoor enthusiasts, along with more than 80 miles of designated bike lanes with CV Link nearing completion and construction soon to start on the Art & Music Line which will connect with Bear Creek Trail and CV Link.
Always Striving to Do More
The City is always striving to do more to preserve its natural assets for generations to come, which requires the help of all who live, do business and vacation in La Quinta.
La Quinta is dedicated to promoting green practices through programs that make sustainability a part of everyday life for both residents and visitors.
• Recycling Initiatives: We make recycling simple. From organic recycling programs to easy-to-use public recycling stations, every effort counts.
• Water Conservation: Join us in using water responsibly. Our landscaping and irrigation systems are designed with drought-tolerance in mind, and we encourage visitors to conserve water during their stay.
• Waste Reduction: Local businesses and residents are dedicated to reducing waste, and you can play your part by choosing reusable options and disposing of waste responsibly.
It doesn’t take a lot, but it does take a commitment to knowing and practicing the best choices for protecting the environment, from recycling to not leaving trash on the trails and not littering streets or parks. Opt to bike or walk to stores and restaurants rather than drive when possible.
By practicing sustainable habits while enjoying La Quinta’s outdoor adventures, world-class shopping and unforgettable dining, visitors join residents and businesses in helping to preserve this desert paradise.
“Whether you’re hiking our trails, teeing off on the green, or enjoying local cuisine, we encourage eco-friendly choices at every turn.”
Small Changes, Big Impact
For example, consider using reusable stainless steel or aluminum bottles for water rather than single-use plastic, not only are they better for the environment but they keep water colder longer which is a plus when hiking, biking or jogging in the desert.
When shopping or dining, look for participating businesses proudly displaying the “Dare to Care” logo and know that when you support them, you’re supporting sustainability.
Sustainable travel is all about making mindful choices, and those small choices add up.
When you bike rather than drive, recycle rather than toss, and choose eco-friendly options, you’re helping preserve the beauty of La Quinta for generations to come.
Check out our website, www.playinlaquinta.com/dare-to-care, for more information about our Dare to Care campaign.
We know recycling mandates in California and the City of La Quinta may differ from those our visitors follow in their hometowns. Find everything you need to know about recycling in La Quinta, including some FAQs, at the City’s website www.laquintaca.gov/recycle.
Dunkin’ Opens in La Quinta
Story by: GCVCC Staff
La Quinta is buzzing with excitement as Dunkin’ officially opened its doors on December 18th, 2024, bringing the beloved coffee and breakfast brand to the heart of this vibrant community. Located at 79670 Highway 111, the new Dunkin’ is set to become a go-to spot for residents and visitors alike, offering a modern twist on classic convenience.
What inspired Dunkin’ to choose La Quinta for its latest location? According to the team, it was the community’s unparalleled sense of care and connection. “While conducting our research and groundwork, we felt the greatest sense of care here compared to any other market,” a spokesperson shared. “We couldn’t resist the opportunity to be part of this community. Our goal is to add more value, love, and happiness to La Quinta.”
Dunkin’ is renowned for energizing mornings with its high-quality coffee, baked goods, and breakfast offerings. From signature donuts to sandwiches and wraps, there’s something for everyone— and that includes those with dietary restrictions. The La Quinta location is
proud to cater to gluten-free and vegan preferences, ensuring inclusivity in every bite. With the tagline “America Runs on Dunkin’,” this location promises to keep the community running on delicious, affordable energy.
The opening has also brought significant job opportunities to La Quinta, with around 40 positions created to build an enthusiastic, welcoming team. Dunkin’ invites locals to join its “energizing environment” and help serve smiles to every customer.
To celebrate its grand opening, Dunkin’ is pulling out all the stops. The first 100 customers will receive free coffee for a year, an irresistible incentive for early birds. Additionally, patrons can enjoy exclusive calendar coupons and samples of Dunkin’s best-loved products.
This state-of-the-art location is designed with the latest innovations to enhance convenience and sustainability. Whether you’re dining in, utilizing the drivethru, or ordering through Dunkin’s app, the experience promises to be fast, friendly, and seamless. The store also features kiosks for self-ordering and
offers delivery services, catering to busy lifestyles. Sustainability is a priority, too, with eco-friendly paper cups and an energy-efficient building design.
“Our goal is not just to add financial value to La Quinta, but also spiritual value,” the Dunkin’ team emphasized. “We want our coffee to be a gift that helps people do more, see more, and be more.”
Dunkin’ fans will also be delighted to find region-specific treats exclusive to California, adding a touch of local flavor to their menu. From classic favorites to new innovations, there’s plenty to explore at this fresh location.
Open daily from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m., Dunkin’ is ready to fuel the La Quinta community morning, noon, and night. For more information about the menu, promotions, or to place an order, visit www.dunkindonuts.com.

SAFETY
La Quinta’s Guide to Bike Safety and Enjoying the Trails
Story by: City of La Quinta Staff
The cooler winter months in the desert are inviting to people who want to be outdoors riding bikes, walking or hiking and the City of La Quinta wants to remind all to be bike safely, and be aware of your surroundings to avoid injuries.
La Quinta has about 80 miles of designated bike lanes, and one of the City’s most popular pathways is Bear Creek Trail. The trail is a 4.75-mile multiuse path for walking and biking, including e-bikes, that starts at the corner of Eisenhower Drive and Calle Tampico and travels south toward the Fred Wolff Nature Preserve and the Cove Oasis trailhead.
It is a multi-use path per the grant, received by the City for Bear Creek Trail, so electric bikes commonly known as e-bikes class 1 and 2 are permitted since they are considered regular bikes.
In some areas, e-bikes can go faster than non-motorized bicycles and riders are encouraged to be mindful of their speed, slow down and yell or sound a bell to alert walkers that you are coming.
Share the Road
The City encourages everyone using the roads to respect each other, share the road, and travel safely. On public streets, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as automobile drivers and are therefore subject to the same rules of the road.
• Obey all traffic signs and signals.
• Yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk.
• Go with the traffic flow. Ride on the right in the same direction as cars.
• Use the bike lane when traveling slower than traffic except when making a left turn, passing, avoiding hazardous conditions or where a right turn is authorized.
• Do not stop or park a bicycle on a bike path.
Bike Safety Tips
• Ride with both hands on the handlebars except when signaling a turn or stop.
• Stop and look left-right-left for traffic before entering a street.
• Stay alert – use your eyes to look for things that could make you fall, like potholes, pebbles or other road hazards.
• Stay alert – use your ears to listen for traffic. Don’t wear earphones while riding.
• Watch for parked cars and cars pulling out or into parking spaces or driveways.
• Check your equipment. Make sure your bike tires are properly inflated and that the brakes work.
