As the Palm Springs International Film Festival continues to grow, its expansion to La Quinta marks an exciting chapter in its legacy. With the Palm Springs ShortFest set to return in June, the festival’s commitment to nurturing talent and promoting cross-cultural awareness remains stronger than ever.
The Palm Springs International Film Society is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization whose mission is to cultivate and promote the art and science of film through education and cross-cultural awareness. The Film Society produces the Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) and Film Awards every January and Palm Springs ShortFest in June. In addition to curating the best in international cinema, PSIFF’s Film Awards has come to be known as the first stop on the campaign trail for the Academy Awards®, and our Oscar®-qualifying ShortFest is the largest short film festival and market in North America. Our festivals, year-round member screenings and educational programs manifest our organization’s mission by nurturing and encouraging new filmmaking talent, honoring the great masters of world cinema, and expanding audience horizons. The City of Palm Springs is the title sponsor of both festivals. The Film Awards are presented by Silvercrest, and sponsored by Entertainment Tonight.

A popular event during the season that draws hundreds to Old Town La Quinta is Art on Main Street where about 60 artists, most of them local, exhibit and sell their work – a mix of paintings, photographs, jewelry, textiles, woodwork and mixed-media.
An inviting atmosphere, unbeatable views of the surrounding mountains, and unique, locally-owned shops and restaurants are among the draws for artists and event-goers who can enjoy the sounds of local musician Sergio Villegas while strolling the street, talking with artists and shopping for a special piece for themselves or as a gift.
Art on Main Street has a “local, friendly, California feeling,” event organizer Shelley Glickstein said.
Art on Main Street is put on by Old Town La Quinta with the City of La Quinta as presenting sponsor.
“The art show is also a dog parade,” Glickstein said laughing. “There’s like as many doodles as there are artists. It’s a neighborhood kind of feeling because the admission and parking are free with live music (performed by) Sergio Villegas, which people really enjoy.”
It draws more than 100 artists per season with about 60 per show.
Art on Main Street is a great way to introduce people to Old Town La Quinta where most restaurants have expanded outdoor dining.
“People enjoy the patios and just being able to sit down for a drink or (a meal),” she said.
Art on Main Street, now in its ninth season, is held on select Saturdays from November through March, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Each event features about 60 local and Southern California artists with a couple from Arizona. About a dozen artists are La Quinta residents who regularly have booths, Glickstein said.
Among them is Robert Weil, a mixedmedia artist whose paintings of cafés and other scenes include people and pets. “It’s fun. It’s whimsical and it’s cheerful,” Glickstein said of Weil’s artwork. “One of his favorite subjects is people with animals. So, when people buy his prints, there are so many animal lovers there walking their dog that now he customizes them.”
“He takes a picture of their dog at the show and then redoes the piece as a custom piece. He can put their cat in it too,” she said, if the customer gives him a photo.
Weil has had a booth at the event for several years, starting when it was Art Under the Umbrellas and continuing when it became Art on Main Street. Among the notable collectors of his work
are Dick Van Dyke, Diana Ross, Jerry Seinfeld, Frank Sinatra, Jack Lemmon and Ray Liotta.
About six years ago he made La Quinta his home, moving here after the house he was renting in Malibu was destroyed in the Woolsey Fire.
Growing up in Los Angeles, Weir said he would often come to Palm Springs with his family, liked it and always thought of making the desert his home one day.
“I like it for the simplicity, for the clarity and for the amount of traffic compared to L.A.,” he said, laughing.
He keeps showing at Art on Main Street for a variety of reasons.
“First, it’s a freebie. People don’t have to pay to be there. So, that’s a big plus,” he said.
“The atmosphere, because it’s a street and it’s a charming street, has an entirely different kind of a flavor than an art show,” he said.
In an art show there are so many different things to see and always a slight distance between the viewer and the artist, whereas Art on Main Street makes everyone easily accessible – the artists and the audience, he said.
“I find it more satisfying and the energy, of course, is better because it’s a smaller, constrained area while the park shows are much more spread out,” Weil said. The dog art would not have been a possibility in the larger events in the park where dogs aren’t allowed.
“The amount of dogs on Main Street is like its own show. There are endless amounts of variations of dogs and that’s how this began. It was from a customer looking at my stuff and liking it” and asking he could put her dog into one of his paintings.
“The interesting thing about it is that it gives the viewer a chance to become a participant in the work because now they’re becoming an art director,” he said. They can select the image they like from about 150 he has done and as long as it’s an appropriate combination of a dog in a specific image visually, anything is possible.
“Some people are very creative about it and some just see right away an image I have there at the show which has a dog in it and say, ‘That’s the image I want,’ which is usually how it happens,” he said. He also does cats and customers need only supply a photo.
Paintings that are cheerful and fun are an expression of Weil’s personality. He has done serious paintings but doesn’t enjoy it, he said.
“I think maybe the closest reason I could give you for why my stuff looks the way it does is it would be like telling a joke. The narrative would have some kind of humor to it,” he said.
Art was something Weil enjoyed from an early age. He didn’t like school and had a hard time with academics.
“What I liked was fooling around, drawing, just having a good time visually with certain things,” he said.
La Quinta artists also showing this season:
• Garrison Wayne – Canvas In the Garden
• Kathy Caldwell – Gold & Silver Jewelry
• Cheryl Kamolz – Textiles, quilted pillows & wall art

Utility conflicts are resolved, and work on the road approaches for the west side of the all-weather bridge on Dune Palms Road, including the reopening of Corporate Center Drive and buttoning up of work within the channel, continues as the $25 million project nears completion.
It is expected that the bridge will be finished in late February or early March.
The east side of the bridge was completed in April 2024 and opened for two-way traffic.
Construction of the City’s last north/ south bridge over the stormwater channel started in January 2023.
When Hilary pounded the Coachella Valley on August 20, 2023, delivering more than 3 inches of rain to La Quinta,
it wiped out the bypass road built to keep Dune Palms Road open over the wash during bridge construction.
Hilary was followed by another major storm on September 1, 2023, and for the public’s safety rather than reconstruct the bypass road, delaying construction and adding to the cost of the bridge, the City opted to keep Dune Palms Road closed at the wash until the east side of the bridge was finished.
The City was approved for $17.65 million in Highway Bridge Program funds (HBP) administered through Caltrans. The City initially advanced the project $14 million from reserve funds and is now being reimbursed with HBP funds.
The Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) committed $7.26 million to the bridge construction with the
City responsible for a non-reimbursable funding share of $932,987.
At completion, the bridge will be 480 feet long and about 86 feet wide and will include:
• Four vehicle lanes, two in each direction
• Two 8-foot-wide bike/cart paths, one in each direction.
• Two 6-foot-wide sidewalks, one in each direction.
• A 9-foot-8-inch raised center median.
Check www.laquintaca.gov/dunepalms to watch construction via livestream and for project updates.
