CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE By: Douglas Motz GCV La Quinta Chamber Chairman It’s time to mark your calendars and get ready for our Holiday Season of activities the City of La Quinta has to offer. There’s no better way to kick off the Holiday Season than to come to the City of La Quinta’s Christmas Tree Lighting on December 1 at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited, so bring your family and friends to Civic Center Park for this family fun-filled and free event. Have you checked out First Thursdays in Old Town La Quinta? On the first Thursday of every month, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. now through May 3rd, you can enjoy live music on Main Street, dine al fresco, shop, experience olive oil and wine tastings, trunk shows, and more! Parking and admission are free. You can find more information on what’s happening in La Quinta at www. playinlaquinta.com. I want to take this time to thank each and every one of our Veterans for the service that you have given to our great country and for the service that you continue to provide. While we sing songs of joy with family and friends at holiday parties, they are working long hours, counting on one another to protect their backs. Their sacrifice is made even greater during this time away from their loved ones. It is because of your sacrifices that we are able to enjoy our freedoms. I say simply to our heroes – the men and women of our armed forces, “Thank You” for all you have done and continue to do for me, my family, my friends, community, and our country. The holiday season is a wonderful time for us to remember the friends and citizens of our GEM, the City of La Quinta, who help our businesses and make our jobs a pleasure all year long. The City of La Quinta and the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce would not be the city it is without your continued support. So, we’d like to take this moment to say thank you and send our best wishes to you and your families. May your Holiday Season and the New Year be filled with much joy, happiness, and success. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year! Douglas Motz Douglas Motz is the owner of Douglas Motz Insurance Agency and can be reached at 760-200-0270 or www. DougMotz.com 6 | GCVCC.ORG

This modernization project will be completed in phases and be completed while school activities are in session. The first two phases of the project, including the renovation of the existing administration building, two classroom buildings, and the food services building were completed this past summer. The exterior building components and various site work remains in progress along with the next phase of the project, which includes the construction of a new science classroom building and the renovation of another classroom wing. The overall modernization project will be completed in summer of 2018.

RENOVATION UPDATE PART 2 Submitted by: Patrick Cisneros, Director Facilities Services and Mary Perry, Public Information Officer

While the four projects detailed in the last update are the most extensive, work is always underway at the district’s soon-to-be 35 schools. Outdoor maintenance takes place on a daily basis and classroom enhancements continue to put Desert Sands Unified School District in the forefront of 21st century teaching and learning.

The last Desert Sands Unified School District (DSUSD) update article provided information on two elementary schools. In Part II of the update, we take a look at two secondary school revitalization projects. Work on Indio High School, one of the oldest schools in DSUSD, was planned as a multi-phase project of 300,000 square feet, including eight new buildings, new pool facilities, and new baseball and softball fields. Phase I began in June 2011, with demolition of old buildings following the relocation of classrooms to portable structures on property lent to the district by the City of Indio. Rough grading and the updating of underground utilities was complete and construction of new buildings began in June 2012. This new construction included the gymnasium, the science classroom building, administration building, and performing arts center. All of the buildings are state-of-the-art education facilities. With the exception of the performing arts center, these buildings were completed in December 2014, with students occupying the buildings after winter break. The performing arts center was opened in June 2015. Phase 2 of the Indio High School project began in January 2015 and was completed in December 2016. Phase 2 included a new library, food service building, arts building, career technical education building, and a general education classroom building. Phase 3 began in July 2017 and will be completed in early 2018. This phase consists of the reconstruction of the baseball and softball fields. Phase 3 will be the final phase of the overall modernization project at this site. The La Quinta Middle School project is funded with allocations from Measure KK passed in November 2014. This exciting project includes a new campus entry giving the site a renewed appearance. All buildings on this campus will include a complete modernization. All classroom improvements include upgraded technology standards. The new state-ofthe-art science building with outdoor learning space gives a new home to the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) program on campus, along with support spaces, such as maker spaces and art classrooms. This project includes an updated library and media center. A new fitness center is incorporated into this project and will give students a space for indoor activities to support the ongoing health and wellness program on campus. The existing administration building will also be renovated and reorganized to support a single point of entry and to provide secured access onto the campus.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS ESSENTIALS Submitted by: Jeff Fishbein

Emergency situations such as fire, extreme weather, and power outages can happen without warning. By taking the time to prepare for a possible disaster now, you and your family will be equipped to handle a crisis if one ever occurs. Fire Escape Route and Meeting Spot It can take a mere five minutes for a fire to engulf your entire home. This is one reason having an escape plan is so important. Include at least two exit routes in your plan in case one is blocked, and designate a safe location for everyone in your household to meet. Identifying a secondary location outside your neighborhood is good to have in the event it’s not safe to return or you’re asked to evacuate. List of Emergency Contacts Make laminated cards with a list of important phone numbers for each family member. This might include contact information for the local authorities and emergency services, as well as your nearest relatives. Home Safety Items Be prepared in case an emergency does occur by having these home safety items: Fire Extinguisher -- Keep one on each floor, and check them annually to make sure they’re functioning properly. First-Aid Kit -- Store it in a central location, such as the kitchen, and make sure everyone knows where it is. Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors -- Install detectors in each room and test them once a month. Use long-life lithium batteries to cut back on replacements. Food and Water -- Put together a three-day supply of nonperishable foods and at least three gallons of water for each member of your household. There’s often very little time to react in a crisis. But with a little planning and prep work, you can be well-equipped and ready to respond accordingly. Jeff Fishbein is a REALTOR with the desert’s leading Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. Holiday Celebration! IT’S BACK! - AND IT’S NOT YOUR MOTHER’S WALLPAPER Submitted by: Ev Levin Gerisch, elg design

Now that wallcoverings are easier to remove and offered in a dizzying array of options, interior designers are hot to recommend it. For many of us, papered walls are the stuff of nightmares and a decorating taboo. Haunting memories of in-your-face flower-power prints of the ‘70s and chintz-and-stripes over-saturation of the ’80s—and the money and tedious hours spent remediating such once-fashionable forays—even design pros shied away from wallpaper. Every homeowner I have worked with has wanted to remove their dated wallpaper. The cost and hassle of removing and installing it has factored into the marketability of houses with wallpaper adornment. Watersoluble adhesives have supplanted oil-based pastes, making for easier paper removal and installation that’s kinder to walls and pocketbooks. Wallpaper’s return is in part a backlash to the tonal grays-whites-neutrals since the new millennial and overfilled California bohemian style. New wallcoverings act like furniture and create a unique touch that requires less ‘stuff’ occupy the space.

Offering more drama than paint, it’s a fun way to transform a room and reflect your personal style without breaking the bank. Think of it as contemporary art for the masses. A stunning wallpaper may be just what you need to pull a room together - whether it be an accent wall, tucked between the cabinets of a built-in, on the back wall of bookcases, on the ceiling, or on every wall in the room. Today’s popular papers are vastly different from the old school. The prints are dramatically oversize and sometimes whimsical, ranging from runwayinspired patterns to animals and characters. The colors are richer, the fabrics are textured and sometimes three-dimensional. And, thanks to advances in digital printing, the images have a life-like sharpness. An interior decorator or designer can make choosing placement and choice of wallpaper a less daunting task. Ev Levin Gerisch, IDS, is designer/owner of eco-conscious elg design since 2007. ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE UPCOMING COLLEGE SCHOOL YEAR?

LIFE HAPPENS. And not always at the most convenient time. That’s where Eisenhower Urgent Care comes in. With locations in Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, and La Quinta, we provide expert care on a walk-in basis. Not sure whether to visit our Emergency Department or Urgent Care? Download our handy fact sheet at emc.org/urgenttips.

Preparing for the upcoming school year starts with the filing of the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The big change this year is that the FAFSA can now be submitted on October 1st for the 20182019 college school year. In prior years, the submission was January 1st. Previously, you needed to estimate your income and assets for the current year and use that information on the submission of the FAFSA. This year, you need to use your 2016 tax returns instead of estimating 2017 income. This new system makes it harder to reposition assets prior to the end of the year in hopes of decreasing expected family contribution, which represents what you can afford to pay to send your student to college in the next year.

For more information, call 760-834-3593.

Palm Springs ~ Rancho Mirage ~ La Quinta

There are techniques that can be utilized to lower your expected family contribution, therefore lowering the amount you will pay out-of-pocket.

We make your home the star.

During discussions with parents over the years, many demonstrated no planning on how they are going to pay for college. With the cost of education going up 7-8% each year, it is very challenging to determine ways to pay for college without a solid financial plan. Knowing how the financial aid system works and how to effectively file the FAFSA is key to increasing financial aid. The key to college planning is twofold: 1. Knowing the ins and outs of filing the FAFSA. Our company has spent 14 years helping our clients to maximize the amount of aid they receive. 2. Starting a financial college plan early. The earlier you start planning and implementing that plan, the easier it is to pay for college. When is the best time to plan for college? When you think about starting a family. Those of you that have young children will benefit greatly by starting a college plan now! There are many solutions to funding college; however, it shouldn’t infringe on your retirement planning. The two should go hand-in-hand. The greatest gift that you can give your family this holiday season is a free, no obligation consultation. At that time, we can discuss your own individual situation. For the past 15 years, Educational Funding Solutions has been helping families to affordably send their students to college without sacrificing their retirement. STAY FIT (even through the holidays)

DOING CRUNCHES MIGHT GET YOU OFF COURSE Submitted by: Michael K Butler, co-owner of Kinetix Health and Performance Center There is an ongoing fitness craze of having six-pack abdominals. Most infomercials focus on having a ripped mid-section. While this might be aesthetically pleasing to the eyes, it typically is not very functional. Even though this article is for golfers, the average fitness buff might find this of interest. What actually happens during crunches is that the origin of that muscle and the insertion move closer to one another causing a contraction, but what goes on during that time is very crucial to the success of your movement. A large percentage of the population find it difficult to perform sit ups correctly. What I often see in gyms are over utilized cervical and hip flexors, arching of the back, and a rhythm that would give the roadrunner a run for his money. Plus, it appears obvious that they were not educated on which abdominal muscles they were working. The most underutilized and neglected abdominal muscle in the human body is the transverses abdominus. It is the main stabilizer of the lower back, and serves to increase intra-abdominal pressure, which in turn stabilizes the spine during load. Yet, most people do not know how to activate it. The rectus abdominus, which serves to flex the trunk, is over utilized in comparison to the lower abdominals, and contributes to the gorilla like forward flexed position that you see walking around in the gym. This becomes very important for the golfer, since the game is played in a forward flexed position. Doing crunches only adds to the upper versus lower abdominal muscle imbalances. The emphasis needs to be placed on recruitment of the lower abdominals to increase spinal stability, and this is performed by doing lower abdominal coordination exercises. For the golfer who participates in a golf conditioning program, he or she will learn how to develop a functioning abdominal unit, which in turn will help performance and reduce the chances for back injury. Michael K. Butler B.A.; P.T.A.; CSCS*D; RSCC*D; NMT; PES; TPI Fitness Golf Instructor level II, and C.H.E.K. golf biomechanic specialist. enjoyed. “TIS THE SEASON”…INSURING YOUR NEW CHRISTMAS/HOLIDAY GIFTS Submitted by: Douglas Motz, Douglas Motz Insurance Agency

During the holidays, homes are filled with Christmas gifts, which can make a home more attractive to criminals. Be sure to keep your gifts out of view from the outdoors and keep windows and doors locked. You may not have opened your Christmas gifts yet, but if you receive something that is of value, such as a new computer, gaming systems or perhaps an engagement ring, you might want to think about insuring it in case the unthinkable happens. A few tips: • Soon after you finish unwrapping your Christmas gifts, you should take stock of what you own and how it’s insured. •

Regular homeowner’s insurance policies cover your personal property, both in and out of the home. You may need extra coverage added to your current policy since jewelry and other expensive items are only covered up to a certain amount. A rider or an endorsement allows the policy holder to increase the claim limit of a specific category.

Certain gifts of value have limits on how much they can be insured. Many policies will only pay about $1,000 for theft of jewelry. So, if your engagement ring cost $5,000, your insurance policy isn’t even going to put a dent in replacing it. Many homeowners’ insurance policies put a dollar-amount cap on certain categories of property. So, even if you have a large amount of personal property coverage on your homeowner’s policy, you might have a “sub-limit” of $2,000 for jewelry. In that case, a new pair of diamond earrings, combined with an engagement ring, might push the value of the jewelry above the limit. (Even replacement-cost policies have sub-limits for certain types of property, such as furs and jewelry.)

Be sure to ask your insurance agent or company what your current insurance policy covers. Clarify if it is enough to cover all of the new gifts in your home and if necessary, modify the policy.

If you’re unsure whether you have the proper coverage for your new items, be sure to contact your insurance agent. Douglas Motz is the owner of Douglas Motz Insurance Agency and he can be reached at 760-200-0270 or www.DougMotz.com. License #0F00702. 12 | GCVCC.ORG

CITY MANAGER’S MESSAGE By: Frank J. Spevacek, La Quinta City Manager We are in the midst of the joyous Holiday season and I’d like to thank our generous residents, visitors, businesses and staff for their hard work and efforts throughout the year to make La Quinta the “gem” that it truly is. May your holidays be a wonderful occasion filled with family and friends and know that your City is preparing for a productive and fruitful 2018. The City is thrilled to present various events throughout the month to help us get into the holiday spirit. Starting out the month on December 3rd, an Art Studio Tour will be held at 10 a.m. at the La Quinta Museum. This self-guided tour will be full of captivating exhibits and tour maps will be available for purchase at the Museum. The City of La Quinta Open House will take place on December 5th at 5 p.m. and this will be a great opportunity to come and visit with staff and city council. Be sure not to miss the Casita Lighting at the La Quinta Museum on December 7th at 6 p.m. with the lighting of the historic casita located in front of the museum. Enjoy the sounds of Mariachi Los Palmeros, hot chocolate and other holiday treats. This event is free. On October 7th, the City Council approved a permit to relocate SilverRock golf course clubhouse operations to a 3,886-square foot temporary facility next to the golf driving range to make room for construction of the Montage and Pendry hotels and permanent golf clubhouse. A temporary entrance to the clubhouse will be constructed from Avenue 52, east of the current SilverRock entryway. City staff has been working to enhance the landscaping around La Quinta; the first project is complete. The Miles Avenue Median Landscape Project was completed on November 7th. The improvements feature the “Desert Oasis” landscape palette, using hardscape textures with minimal planting to create an aesthetically pleasing environment with lower, long-term maintenance and regulate costs, along with entrance lighting and wall cleaning to complete the renovation effort. The next project is the Acacia Landscape Project which will run until March 26, 2018. The City of La Quinta wishes you a wonderful holiday season and we are thrilled for the opportunity to work with each and every one of you in 2018!

HOLIDAY MESSAGE FROM LQPD This Holiday season, don’t let the spirit of giving lull you into giving burglars, muggers and pickpockets a better chance to do their dirty work. Crooks love the holidays because it gives them the opportunity to commit crime. Here are some tips on how to shop safely: *Stay alert and be aware of what’s going on around you. *Park in a well-lighted space, and be sure to lock the car, close the window, and hide shopping bags and gifts in the trunk. *Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; pay with credit cards whenever possible. *Deter pickpockets and purse-snatchers. Don’t overburden yourself with packages. Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry your purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put your wallet in an inside coat or front pant pocket. *Shopping with kids? Teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard if you get separated. *If shopping online, track deliveries and confirm delivery has occurred. You can sign up for email notifications to track your packages. *If you know a family member or neighbor will be home, ask them to pick up the packages as soon as they are delivered. *Switch delivery location to work where it can be received by someone and not left on the porch.

WALK THE ROCK SilverRock continues the popular Walk the Rock program this season. Golfers are able to walk and play golf starting at 2:30 p.m.. La Quinta Residents with valid La Quinta Resident Cards will pay $20 and juniors (under the age of 17) will pay $10. Non La Quinta Residents will pay $40. Please contact the golf shop for reservations or questions. 760-777-8884. GRILL AT SIVLERROCK The SilverRock grill is open for breakfast and lunch daily with breakfast being served all day from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Happy Hour from 3 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day. On a Saturday morning, over a dozen volunteers showed up at a La Quinta residence with supplies donated by Lowes and a roll-off dumpster provided by Burrtec. The group worked tirelessly to trim away shrubs covering half of the driveway, weeds throughout the yard, as well as overgrown trees and bushes. The work resulted in the property being left in a tidy attractive condition and fire hazards being eliminated. The resident was very appreciative, especially because her disability and lack of funds had kept her from keeping the yard up herself.

SOUTHWEST CHURCH COMMUNITY PROVIDING A LENDING HAND During this busy holiday season, City of La Quinta’s Code Department would like to take a moment to recognize a group of volunteers that are sharing their time, skills and gifts with others. Early this year, Mr. Wilfredo Real, aka “Wiffy”, Southwest Church’s Outreach Director contacted the City of La Quinta Code Compliance staff with an offer to help residents with properties that have become a bit run down. In February, Wiffy approached Code staff and explained Southwest Church’s desire to help La Quinta residents in need of property maintenance assistance. Code staff was quickly able to connect a resident with Wiffy and volunteers.

In October, Wiffy and his wonderful crew of volunteers were again at a local residence providing the type of work that many older or disabled people cannot do anymore. This time, the group removed a dead tree (stump and all), trimmed another tree that covered almost the entire front yard, painted the front of the dwelling, added address numbers, porch lights, replaced the security screen door, removed weeds and added some ground cover. Once more, Southwest Church volunteers transformed another property, and most importantly helped an elderly resident be safe at home. The Code Compliance Department is extremely appreciative of Southwest Church for their outreach and help to La Quinta residents. Their efforts help to beautify properties, provides a more pleasing and safer place for our residents to live and they are a prime example of why this community is a great place to live in.

La Quinta Fire Department would like to help you and your loved ones stay safe this holiday season. According to NFPA statistics, house fires are more likely during the holidays, due to decorations, candles and holiday cooking. Here are some facts:

Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant.

Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn.

One-fifth (20%) of the home decoration fires occurred in December.

Candles started 38% of home decoration structure fires.

Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.

The top three days for home candle fires were Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Christmas Eve.

Test your smoke alarms and tell guests about your home fire escape plan.

Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve.

Keep children and pets away from lit candles

Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop

Remind smokers to keep their smoking materials with them so young children do not touch them

In nearly half (45%) of the fires, a decoration was too close to a heat source such as a candle or equipment.

Cooking equipment was involved in 18% of home decoration fires. This can happen when a decoration is left on or too close to a stove or other cooking equipment.

To prevent a fire, please follow these tips:

to 150 (grape) and 180 (prune) per eight-ounce cup. Vegetable juices have fewer calories. Ounce for ounce, fruit juice has more calories than whole fruit, because its sugars are concentrated. Since juices are less filling than whole fruit, it’s easy to drink a lot of calories.

FRUIT JUICE 5 SURPRISING FACTS Submitted by: Sip Coffee House & Juice Bar 1. Are All Juices Equally Nutritious? Some juices have more nutrients than others. Orange juice is rich in vitamin C, folate, potassium and phytochemicals called flavonoids. Juices with deeper color (i.e., pink vs. white grapefruit juice) tend to have more carotenoids and other antioxidants. Even nutrient-poor apple and white grape juice contain potentially beneficial phytochemicals. If the whole fruit is used, or the juice is pulpy, the juice will provide some fiber. Vegetable juices are also good choices, but canned and bottled tomato and vegetable juice blends are high in sodium. 2. How Many Calories Does Juice Have? Calories in fruit juice range from 100 (grapefruit) and 110 (orange juice) 24 | GCVCC.ORG

3. What About Juice “Drinks”? Anything called juice “drink,” “beverage,” “punch,” “-ade,” or “cocktail,” is typically fruit juice, water and lots of sugar (usually high-fructose corn syrup) – high-calorie junk food with little actual fruit juice. For example, a “tropical punch” may be only 10% juice. Look for juices labeled “100% fruit juice” (or close to it). 4. Are Fortified Juices Worthwhile? Juices fortified with calcium and vitamin D are a good way to get these much-needed bone nutrients, especially for people who don’t consume a lot of dairy foods. One cup typically has as much calcium and vitamin D as a cup of milk. Sterol-fortified orange juice (e.g. Minute Maid’s Heart Wise) may help lower LDL cholesterol. Don’t pay a premium for juices with added vitamin E and C, B vitamins, zinc and herbs – there’s no evidence they will protect your heart, boost immunity or have any other health benefits. 5. Is Juice from Concentrate Nutritious? It has similar amounts of nutrients as fresh. Frozen juice concentrate is also economical and its packaging less wasteful than cartons or bottles. All juices lose some nutrients after opening though. Once you reconstitute frozen juice concentrate, store it in a tightly closed container below 40 degrees to protect the vitamin C and other nutrients and drink it within one week. Purchase ready-to-drink orange juice 3-4 weeks before the expiration date and use it within a week of opening.

FACIAL PEELS Facial peels involve the application of substances such as chemicals to exfoliate damaged skin. Facial peels can benefit the appearance of your facial skin. The peels slough off the top layer of skin, revealing newer, more youthful skin. Going through a facial peel has some risks but are beneficial. The results you get from a facial peel depend on the depth of the peel and the concentration of the chemicals applied. Superficial Facial Peel A superficial facial peel causes the top layer of your skin to peel off. It does not penetrate deep into your skin or dermis, but rather affects only the epidermal or outer layer of facial skin. Superficial peels are often referred to as lunchtime peels because they don’t take up a lot of your time and you can return to your normal activities right after. According to “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Cosmetic Surgery,” superficial facial peels help make your skin smoother and more refreshed. The book also states that superficial peels such as those using alpha-hydroxy acid reduce fine wrinkles, and improve the texture of skin, skin tone, and the skin color. Medium Facial Peel A medium facial peel affects the epidermis and the upper layer of the dermis. It causes skin on these layers of your body to peel off. It penetrates your skin deeper than a superficial peel and requires some time off work for healing. According to “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Beautiful Skin,” medium facial peels can be used to treat precancerous spots, shallow scars, crow’s feet around your eyes, fine to moderate wrinkles, and darker brown spots on your skin. Deep Facial Peels Phenol, a chemical agent, can be used for a deep facial peel. This type of peel results in the peeling off of your epidermis and penetrates the two layers of your dermis. According to “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Beautiful Skin,” deep facial peels require a longer recovery time, involve more pain, and have a greater risk of complications. They cannot be used on darker skin types due to the risk of hypo-pigmentation or bleaching. Deep facial peels are used to treat deep facial wrinkles, severe sun damage, severe skin discoloration, and deep acne scars. At Oshita Skin Care, we’re professionally certified in TSA and Jesner peels, so give us a call to discuss and schedule a facial peel at 760-972-6236.

PLAN AHEAD! 5 EASY WAYS TO SPARE YOUR STAFF THE PAIN OF AUDIT SEASON Submitted by: Monica, Osborne Rincon CPAs

Financial audits can be incredibly disruptive to your business. At Osborne Rincon CPAs, we understand and know how to make it less painful. Every good auditor should be able to anticipate client needs and frustrations. With some careful planning, the auditor can relieve much of the pressure. There are some things that clients can do themselves to prepare for audits. Taking the time to lay the groundwork ahead of the auditors’ arrival will make the audit go as smoothly as possible. Of course, there will be different challenges each year, but advance preparation can help prevent issues. 1. Debrief on the prior year audit – Meet with the auditor well in advance and have an honest conversation about what went well and what did not during the previous engagement. Listen to what is said and be candid with feedback.

2. Obtain the request list – Auditors have standard lists of items they need each year. Ask them to send it early so you have time to ask questions. The list should include a description of the items needed and the date the information is due. Use it as a planning tool to map out the information in a timely manner. When necessary, communicate unrealistic request dates to the audit team. 3. Write down your processes – If you have written narratives, update them. Providing the process description to the auditor in advance enables them to ask better questions and save time on staff interviews. 4. Review the prior year management comment letter – Your auditor likely gave you a letter with recommendations for internal controls based on the prior year’s audit. Improvements or changes based on the letter should be included in your updated process narratives. 5. Review employee vacations – If key financial employees will be on vacation, do not schedule fieldwork around that time. If auditors cannot obtain the information they need, your audit can drag on. About: Monica graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 2009. She received her Master’s in Accountancy from Texas A&M Commerce in 2016. She spent seven years in the assurance practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP in LA. Contact: If you are in need of a financial audit, Osborne Rincon CPAs can help. Our staff looks forward to serving you. For more information, call 760-777-9805.
