12TH ANNUAL LA QUINTA HOT ROD & CUSTOM CAR SHOW

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE By: Douglas Motz GCV La Quinta Chamber Chairman What a great start the City of La Quinta had for the month of January! First Thursdays, Full moon/midnight hikes, Coffee with the Cops, Community Workshop, Unveiling of the Charles Schulz Exhibit at the La Quinta Museum, Putt Putt and Pancakes and of course The 59th annual CareerBuilder Challenge! Did you know that La Quinta Country Club has been a co-host for the past 53 years of this tournament? The CareerBuilder Challenge Concert Series which featured Huey Lewis and The News and The Goo Goo Doll was a HUGE success to so many fans from across our valley. Speaking of golf, Tradition Country Club honored Arnold Palmer, at the unveiling of a statue of “The King” outside their clubhouse, where Mr. Palmer had his Desert Home. What an honor for Tradition Golf Club as well as the City of La Quinta to be able to house one of three of these statues as a tribute to Mr. Palmer. We kick off February with the 12th Annual La Quinta Hot Rod and Custom Car Show on February 3rd, 2018 in partnership with The Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce, the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce and the City of La Quinta. This FREE event is held at La Quinta Community Park located at 77-865 Avenida Montezuma, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. With February being the Month of Love, we have just what you need in La Quinta for your Valentine from a “Staycation” at one of our resorts/hotels to dining or shopping. As I write these articles and do my research as to “What’s Happening” in La Quinta, I am amazed at how much our city has to offer. Be sure to check out our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/CityOfLaQuinta/ to see what future events we have coming up! WHAT’S IN SEASON THIS SPRING Submitted by: Andie Hubka

With Spring comes nature’s bounty of colorful fruits and vegetables that will be gracing our tables. Our neighboring farms are busy pruning, weeding and watching the calendar in preparation for the impending spring harvest, the largest crop of the year for many farms here in the Coachella Valley. We are fortunate to have one of the greatest agricultural areas in Southern California right here in our own backyard – so let’s focus on choosing some of the season’s top fruits and veggies that can be found locally – perfect for spring’s kitchen explorations. Citrus is always in season here! You can be sure that all those naval orange, tangerine, Meyer lemon and Grapefruit trees will keep giving well into April. To Make the most of all that gorgeous citrus fruit, zest and juice them into a large pitcher and then freeze small amounts of the zest/juice mixture in plastic baggies. Pull one out once a week and you can grab a quick splash of citrus goodness all summer, when your trees are bare. Cauliflower is next to bloom in our local farms, with both traditional white and heirloom purple varieties cropping up along the roads in Indio and Thermal. Cut the cauliflower into florets, toss with olive oil and salt and pepper and roast at 400 degrees until caramelized and tender for a truly scrumptious spring side dish. Adventurous cooks turn roasted florets into soup, or bread and fry them (our most popular dish at Cork & Fork ) and serve with a dipping sauce. Probably the biggest treat of the season are the super sweet, juicy ripe strawberries we all look forward to each year – soon at their absolute peak, and perfect for salads and desserts. In our cooking classes we feature strawberry recipes all season long! The ripest ones have no white on their “shoulders”, and the best specimens should have bright green leaves and will not be ruddy or bruised. When you bring them home, store them in a cool dry place on your kitchen counter. Refrigeration will kill the flavor – so buy only what you will use in 3 to 4 days. And don’t wash them until you are ready to eat them.

In addition, be on the lookout for green beans, all varieties of beets, raspberries, cucumbers and of course spring onions. Several varieties of greens abound this time of year – most notably mustard, kale , and of course spinach. Simply grab what looks lovely at our local farmers markets each week – then use the internet as a resource to find recipes to compliment your markets finds. Remember – keep it simple and the fresh local produce you buy will shine with minimal preparation. RICHARD R. OLIPHANT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL JOINS RANKS AT DESERT SANDS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT In a unanimous vote, the Desert Sands Unified School District Board of Education recently voted to name the new elementary school after local developer and philanthropist Richard R. Oliphant. The new school will open in time for the 20182019 school year, replacing Dwight Eisenhower Elementary School. Following the vote, Oliphant said, “I am flabbergasted to think a school will be named after me. I can remember President Ford saying to me, as we dedicated a school to him in Indian Wells, that one of the greatest pleasures derived from being President is having schools named after you. I never made President, but now I know what he meant.”

Oliphant and his wife Jan have lived in the Coachella Valley for over 50 years. A longtime supporter of education, Oliphant was one of a group of local residents directly responsible for establishing the Palm Desert campus of CSU San Bernardino. In recognition of this effort, Dick was awarded an honorary doctorate. As part of this commitment to education, he established the Desert Sands School Building Corporation and has served as president since its inception. He has served on the Indian Wells City Council, including eight years as mayor, and was one of the founders of the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership (CVEP). Following the vote, Gary Tomak, incoming DSUSD board president, commented, “The children of this valley may not know who Richard Oliphant is, but this is a wonderful opportunity to teach them about the history of our community.” DSUSD is home to almost 29,000 students and 2,700 employees. It provides outstanding education at 34 schools. For more information, contact Mary Perry at the numbers above.

5 WORK CONVERSATIONS YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE OVER EMAIL Submitted by: Kristen Bahler

You probably know not to talk smack about your boss when he’s in earshot, but email isn’t quite as intuitive. “Emails live forever, and you don’t want to go on record saying something that could haunt you later,” says career coach Denise Dudley. We asked Dudley and a handful of other career experts to name their top five biggest office email no-nos:

Gossip Even if the person you’re emailing isn’t a blabbermouth, there’s no telling who’s looking over her shoulder. Performance Unless you’re drafting a performance report to HR, don’t talk about how people are doing their jobs — even if it’s complimentary. Sarcasm doesn’t translate well through email, so when you lob a note to your boss that says “our new intern sure is punctual,” it’s hard to tell if you’re being earnest. Unsolicited advice “Making unsolicited suggestions is not recommended, “Murphy says. “However, if you ask them in writing if they would like suggestions or feedback, then you’re in a safer place.” Criticism “Email should never be used to offer personal attacks, impugn others, or take issue with the company,” says Tim Cole, CEO of The Compass Alliance. If you’re going to reprimand someone or air a grievance, “push for an inperson meeting,” says Chris Hallberg, author of The Business Sergeant’s Field Manual. Sensitive topics Any conversation HR will want to regulate needs to happen in person. “It’s best to have more difficult conversations like performance reviews, asking for a raise, or talking out issues with a co-worker faceto-face.” says Dennis Collins, senior director of marketing at West Corporation’s Unified Communication division. 10 | GCVCC.ORG

HASSLE INSURANCE Submitted by: Carrie Babij

Imagine driving up to your home and finding everything gone: house, furnishing, computers, files, safe…maybe even your wallet. The good news: if you have enough insurance from a quality carrier, you’re likely to eventually get all your possessions replaced. The bad news: unless you’ve done some effective personal disaster recovery planning, your next year will be a nightmare of administrative hassle. For example, imagine the warm reception you’ll get from your bank when you explain you’ve lost your ID, account number, and password, but would like access to your account immediately.

To view and download the free Vital Data Map, visit our blog post on “Hassle Insurance” at http://desertinsurancesolutions.com/hassle-insurance/. The Vital Data Map is also a great estate planning tool. After all, you don’t want to stick those you care most about with the hassle of unraveling a maze of contacts, accounts, and passwords. Carrie Babij is President of Desert Insurance Solutions in La Quinta, and has more than 25 years’ experience with high net worth personal and commercial lines of insurance. For more information, contact Carrie at carrie@desertinsurancesolutions. com.

The solution is the Vital Data Map, or what I call “hassle insurance,” and it’s free. The Vital Data Map helps you organize and record: Account names, numbers, passwords Important documents Advisor names and contact information Records and videos of personal property Technology back-up It will take a few hours now, but will save endless hours in the future. You populate it with copies of your documents in a three-ring binder along with a CD or flash drive of your hard drive back-up and video of your possessions. Store it offsite in a safe deposit box or in a sealed container with a trusted family member or friend. GREATER COACHELLA VALLEY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE | 11

WHY CAN’T THEY JUST TALK TO ME? Submitted by: Linnea G. Van Kirk

This is without a doubt the most common question I hear from parents of tweens and teens. You go from being part of every detail of your child’s life to feeling totally shut out. While there is no magic formula, here are some tips that might help: 1) Avoid the “Talk Block” - Be aware of how your non-verbal cues like heavy sighs and off-hand, sarcastic statements might be putting them off. 2) Be a Part of Their World – Take the time to learn about the music they listen to, the shows they watch, and the YouTube videos they obsess about. 3) Make Them the Expert – Ask them for help with something they know about, like apps or bluetooth speakers. Everyone likes to feel useful. 4) Give Them Space – No one likes being pounced on right after they get home, especially kids. 5) “What” not “Why” - Try starting your questions using ‘what” instead of “why,” and you might get better results. 6) Avoid the ‘Door Slammers” - Do your best to avoid questions that have an easy “yes” or “no” answer. 7) Put Down Your Phone – No explanation needed, I hope. 8) Multitask – Kids are more likely to talk during an activity. 9) It’s Me, not You – Everyone responds better to statements that start with “I” instead of “you.” Try saying, “I really get upset when....” instead of, “You make me so mad when...” 10) Work on Yourself – “My parents never listen to me”might seem hyperbolic, but it never hurts to make sure your listening skills are up to par. GOLF CART PROGRAM CITY MANAGER’S MESSAGE By: Frank J. Spevacek, La Quinta City Manager 2018 is now in full swing, and here at City Hall we’re working harder than ever to make La Quinta the best it can be. As always, we’re here to serve our community and the citizens who make it the vibrant place it is today. The ideas and opinions of the people of La Quinta served an important role last month during the 2018 LQ Community Workshop. On January 13th, dozens of local participants joined the City Council and staff at the Wellness Center to discuss this year’s theme: “This Is How We Do It – Processes and procedures of Public Policy on a local level”. Keynote speaker, Dean Peter Peterson of Pepperdine University, spoke about public engagement and residents provided their ideas regarding 2018 projects, how Measure G funds will be allocated, and receive updates on exciting development projects. Looking ahead, this month will see some exciting events in our fair city. The first ever Toast to LQ – a wine, music, and cultural arts event – will take place on February 9th from 6-9 p.m. at the La Quinta Museum. Enjoy live jazz, sample exceptional wines from Fess Parker Winery & Vineyard, indulge in hors d’oeuvres, tour the museum, and learn more about La Quinta history. The tickets are only $20 ($30 for a pair) and include six wine tastings as well as the hors d’oeuvres. For more information and to buy tickets, visit toast2lq. eventbrite.com In celebration of Black History Month, the Wellness Center will host “2 That Transformed History: Althea Gibson & Wilma Rudolph” on February 21st, 6-8:30 p.m. This free event will include accomplished musical performers, guest speakers, and a documentary that highlights the impressive contributions of these amazing women to black history. The City of La Quinta wishes you a wonderful February and thanks you for your many contributions that make our city such a marvelous place to call home. It’s an honor to serve you!

The City of La Quinta promotes wellness and active living activities with beautiful desert backdrops to hiking trails, bicycling, tennis, pickle-ball, and world-class golf courses. The city has also instituted a Golf Cart Program for licensing to reduce its footprint on roadways and clean air while providing an alternate method of travel around our much slower mixed use residential village neighborhoods. Our residents and visitors alike welcome this slower, more relaxed method of travel. However would like the City to share some of the rules, and regulations to make the trip pleasant for all: • • • • • • • • •

A permit is required with a permit decal displayed on the right rear fender of the golf cart. A driver’s license and proof of insurance are required. Golf carts are limited to daytime operation and on approved streets 1 hr. before sunrise and up to 1 hr. after sunset. Golf carts can only travel on designed Golf Cart Routes, streets with golf cart signs, and streets designed for 25 MPH or less. Golf carts cannot travel on sidewalks. Some sidewalks are identified by sign as Shared Sidewalks for pedestrians and bicycles. Golf carts must have noted equipment advertised on the City’s website. La Quinta will only permit golf carts with 2 seats, and will not issue a permit to a 4 seat golf cart. Permits cost $20.00 for a 2 year license, and golf cart owner(s) can apply online at www.la-quinta.org or at City Hall. Brochures with maps for permitted golf cart travel are also available on the City’s website.

HEATING SAFETY There is something about the winter months and curling up with a good book by the fireplace. But did you know that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths? With a few simple safety tips and precautions you can prevent most heating fires from happening. be warm and safe this winter! • Keep anything that can burn at least three-feet (one metre) away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater. • Have a three-foot (one metre) “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters. • Never use your oven to heat your home. • Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes • and manufacturer’s instructions.

• • • • •

Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters. Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home. Test smoke alarms at least once a month.

HEATING EQUIPMENT SMARTS • Install wood burning stoves following manufacturer’s instructions or have a professional do the installation. All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. • Install and maintain CO alarms to avoid the risk of CO poisoning. If you smell gas in your gas heater, do do not light the appliance. Leave the home immediately and call your local fire department or gas company. FACT Half of home heating fires are reported during the months of December, January, and February.

BICYCLE COLLISIONS Ever since the City of La Quinta starting tracking collisions using its Crossroads Software, the City staff has been aware of the need to implement improvements to reduce the frequency of collisions involving bicyclists. In 2015, the City recognized a trend in rapidly rising bicycle collisions and began a major effort to implement the following countermeasures to reduce bicycle collisions on public streets maintained by the City: Restriping Streets: As part of pavement resurfacing projects, on-street bike lanes were provided where they did not previously exist. This was done through narrowing travel lane widths to 10 or 11 feet in order to reduce traffic speeds and provide sufficient pavement to stripe on-street bicycle lanes. The minimum width of the bike lanes are 6 feet as measured from the face of curb. A good example is Eisenhower Drive depicted in the picture.

Video Detection Loops: The City has been gradually changing detection at the 55 traffic signals it maintains from in ground inductance loops to video cameras. As part of that process, detection for bicycles has been provided on all approaches were an on-street striped bike lane is provided. Bike Legends: Bicycle legends with green colored backgrounds were striped on the approaches of all signalized intersections to provide guidance to bicyclists as to where they should position themselves to be detected and travel through signalized intersections. This improvement has been identified as a best practice in a recent article published by the Institute of Transportation Engineers. A good example is shown in the picture.

Green Paint in High Conflict Areas: In areas where bicycles were anticipated to weave or merge with motorized vehicles, green paint was used to heighten awareness of both drivers and bicyclists to the potential for conflicts. A good example is Eisenhower Drive depicted in the picture. Table 1, which provides a summary of the total number of bicycle collisions in the City of La Quinta by calendar year, shows a sharp decline in the number of bicycle collisions in 2016-2017 during a period of time when traffic volumes were increasing along many of the major traffic corridors in the City and the numbers of fatal and injury collisions throughout the United States were increasing significantly. JELMBERG TEAM SALES SKYROCKET TO $60 MILLION IN 2017 SPONSORED CONTENT The Jelmberg Team has announced their highest grossing year ever with over $60 million in residential home sales. These impressive numbers were achieved via a clear marketing plan, including a large expansion in new branding initiatives, internet advertising, the introduction of a new self-produced publication, and traditional real estate promotions. Breaking down the $60 million in sales into monthly numbers shows which months the team yielded the most closed sales. Not surprisingly, the best month for closing was in April of 2017, where the Jelmberg Team closed over $9.5 in home sales. What is surprising, however, is that the June sales numbers reached over $7.2 million.

The comedy is about two old friends - Eddie, a retired Water and Power worker and Arnie, a retired teacher. Eddie has a joke for every occasion. Arnie has a factoid to drop into every conversation. Their wives, Gracie and Norma, have arranged a dinner party for just the four of them. But unknown to Eddie and Arnie , the women have something else in mind. Gracie is tired of Eddie’s jokes and Norma has heard too many facts about too many things. The women suggest that they can liven up their lives by seeing if the grass is truly greener in the other person’s house. They decide to switch partners, becoming swinging seniors…or do they?

10 TIPS FOR STRESS-LESS PARENTING Submitted by: Randy George

All parents get overwhelmed; this is something everyone agrees on. Through life experience, people come up with their own ways to manage stress, but everyone can use a tip or two! Here are 10 strategies to help with the stresses of parenting. 1. Take time to do something for yourself everyday like exercise, stretching, or reading. Self-Care allows you to reset and be ready to face challenges. 2. When feeling overwhelmed, arrange for some outside help. 3. Having a sense of humor will help when things don’t go as planned. Remember, no one is a perfect parent or has a perfect child. 4. Accept that children make mistakes, are inconsistent, and act thoughtlessly. 5. Count to 10 before reacting when angry. This is simple, but it works. This helps to avoid overreacting. 6. Ease tension with human touch. This can be accomplished by giving a hug, holding hands, or simply giving a pat on the back. 7. Listen and show value in the conversations between parent and child. Good communication can prevent conflict and stress. 8. Schedule and follow through with family fun and fitness. Laughter and physical activity reduce stress while strengthening family bonds. 9. Share with your friends not only the concerns about parenting, but also the joys. Just hearing other parents share some of the same concerns and joys can take the pressure off. 10. Learn how children mature so expectations are realistic. If you would like more information, please contact Randy George from Oak Grove in the Desert at (661) 303-8512.

LA QUINTA ARTS FESTIVAL® – 36 YEARS AND AS VIBRANT AS EVER

March 1-4, 2018

With an unprecedented 36% of first-time exhibiting artists, La Quinta Arts Festival® has raised the bar in attracting new creative talent. Hailing from 35 U.S. states as well as Canada, this year’s 220 artists will showcase neverbefore-seen works in every fine art and craft category. Heading this impressive roster is first-time exhibitor Debra Steidel, (Wimberley, TX), whose work has been shown in art galleries across the United States and United Kingdom. Steidel will be making her debut as one of the 2018 Featured Artists. After years of hearing about the reputation of La Quinta Arts Festival® from fellow artists around the country, she is thrilled to participate. Steidel will showcase her fine art porcelain vessels with hand-sculpted, glass lids. New to the Festival’s printmaking category is artist Pop Zhao, one of the most accomplished artists to emerge from China in recent decades. An honor graduate from the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, Zhao was the Beijing Olympics opening artist, creating an 8 mile-long artwork on the Great Wall of China. DO YOU EXFOLIATE? Submitted by: Mary Kay- Elisa Steffan

Skin care, especially exfoliation, becomes extremely important in our dry desert environment. When it’s cold and windy out, we run our heaters which in turn dries out our skin and causes us to accumulate dry dead skin cells. But what can you do to combat this seasonal issue? Exfoliation is the removal of the oldest dead skin cells on the skin’s outermost surface, which is called the epidermis. Exfoliating reveals a smooth, glowing, and radiant skin. There are two ways exfoliation can be achieved: mechanically and chemically. Mechanical exfoliants include scrubs, brushes, sugar, or salt crystals. Chemical exfoliants contain alpha hydroxy acid, glycolic acid, or other acid peels that exfoliate a little deeper. It is important for one to exfoliate two times a week, three if you are oilier. This prepares your skin for maximum penetration of your serums, such as Vitamin C - which stimulates the collagen production in your skin - or hyaluronic acid - which plumps your skin and fills out fine lines and wrinkles. Follow your exfoliation regimen by a skin smoothing moisturizer with SPF 30. Exfoliating is the best way to a radiant and younger looking skin. You will see results after one use. You will love this ritual. It makes a HUGE difference.
