CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE By: Douglas Motz GCV La Quinta Chamber Chairman Even though it’s still officially winter, it sure has felt like spring! I hope you have taken advantage of all the outdoor events we had in February while enjoying this beautiful weather. One of the biggest events in February was our 12th Annual La Quinta Hot Rod and Custom Car Show held on February 3rd. This year’s show celebrated the 65th anniversary of the Corvette and our Mayor’s Choice was the 1957 Chevy Corvette! I want to take this time to thank Chairperson Randy Foulds as well as the chamber staff and volunteers for making this such a fantastic event. Save the Date for the next big event, the 36th Annual La Quinta Arts Festival from March 1-4, 2018, hosted by the La Quinta Arts Foundation. Did you know it is the top ranked fine art festival in the nation? Our GEM of a city has so much art and culture to offer. For more information, check out the Art & Culture page of the city’s website: http://www.playinlaquinta. com/Arts-Culture We’d love for you to join The Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce for their Third Annual Golf Tournament March 29, 2018 at Heritage Palms Country Club in Indio. Wilkin has a personal connection to Caleo Bay, as her mother Marilyn suffers from Alzheimer’s and receives care there. Following seven months of challenges at another community, Marilyn was relocated to Caleo Bay in May 2017. Wilkin recognizes the unique perspective she has at this moment in life, wearing both hats simultaneously. “For me senior care is a personal passion, an opportunity to provide care with a purpose. Knowing the heartache that families go through, I truly appreciate the hard work of exceptional teams in a challenging situation and believe it is a privilege to assist families just like my own!” Ronda Wilkin’s long career in healthcare includes serving as an Executive Director and Regional Director for Sunrise Senior Living and Marketing Director with Pacifica Senior Living. DREAM VACATIONS Submitted by: The Leidner Group

How many of you look forward to your tax refund, but don’t remember what you did with last year’s? What if this year you take your family on a vacation to remember? Be it be an ocean or river cruise, a fabulous land tour, or an all-inclusive resort, I guarantee you will remember it for a lifetime – and so will your family! Now let’s think about where to go. Interested in an ocean cruise? There are many different cruise lines; the least expensive is a Carnival cruise accessed via the Port of Los Angeles. Or try Princess, cruising to Hawaii and the other islands. Those avoiding ocean cruises are big fans of river cruises, which are mostly in Europe. They’re a great way to see Europe for the first time or again in a different light. Shore excursions immerse you in the ports of call, whether by a relaxing city tour or a more active bicycle trip around town. Try AMAWaterways, Uniworld or Viking. Myriad land tour companies offer trips abroad – Abound Travel, Globus, Trafalgar – and to national parks, a great way to see our own beautiful United States. Imagine being able to eat as much as you like at any restaurant. How about golfing, waterskiing, or jet skiing anytime you’d like? Then consider an all-inclusive like Sandals or Beaches. Now that you’ve had a chance to think about it, where would you like to invest your tax return? Stop in to our office and let us help you book your Dream Vacation!

WHEN YOUR LOVED ONE WITH DEMENTIA RESISTS CARE Service and Community Consultant for Custom Care Solutions and President, Board of Directors of Alzheimer’s Coachella Valley. Family members caring for dementia patients have unique challenges, especially when your loved one is resistant. Understanding some of the reasons why this may happen can provide some insight into how to strategize a successful care plan. Put yourself in the place of the patient. For years, they have been taking care of their own personal needs, but now all of a sudden they cannot. How they perceive things is changing, too. Finding the right words to describe how they are feeling may be difficult as well, adding to their frustration. Here are some tips to aid with resistant patients:

WHY DOES MY NONPROFIT NEED “SPECIAL EVENTS INSURANCE”? Submitted by: Douglas Motz/Motz Insurance Agency

In a society with so many lawsuits, it’s best to protect yourself from worstcase scenarios. Special Event Insurance provides protection in the event a volunteer, guest, or participant injures themselves or property damage is caused to a third-party’s property. If your nonprofit is targeted by a lawsuit and it doesn’t have adequate funds to pay for its defense, judgments, or settlements, your directors and officers will be paying the costs. Special Event Insurance covers any damages your nonprofit could be ordered to pay in court. Special events and fundraisers play a significant role in a nonprofit organization’s annual fundraising goals, but they come with great liabilities. Most often, these fundraisers and additional events are not included in the liability insurance coverage purchased by most nonprofit organizations. Any vendors or contractors you hire should provide evidence of current coverage for general liability and workers’ compensation. Consider 12 | GCVCC.ORG

1) Get into a routine, and stay with it. This helps makes life seem a less confusing. 2) Try to understand what is bothering them. If the shower seems frightening, maybe a sponge bath would be more appropriate that day. 3) Allow more time for all activities. Even simple communications will start to take longer. 4) Try calming music and a quiet environment so there is less chance of stimulation. 5) Try to keep your emotions in check. Even body language can be picked up by a patient. If caregiving becomes a burden, understand that you may not be able to be the sole caregiver for your loved one. There are options and you shouldn’t feel guilty using them. Organizations like Alzheimer’s Coachella Valley can offer support groups and helpful programs, and in-home care agencies can help you get the rest you need. Gooo NEWS:

When I go to the gym, I notice how most people go about their workouts, aimlessly moving from machine to machine. Instead, develop a plan to achieve a specific goal, such as running your first marathon in 6 months. Once you have a goal in mind, it’s time to set up your workout plan. It is always best to consult a qualified trainer, especially if you are lost. The following are some helpful guidelines to follow!

• If losing weight is your goal, use low weight and high repetitions. Rest periods should be no longer than 30 seconds. Burst training, another popular method, is done with a Rower, Elliptical, Sled, Bike, or Treadmill. This is done in bursts of 30 seconds of high intensity followed by a recovery of 1 minute. • If getting stronger is your goal, use moderate to heavy weight of low repetitions and at least 1.5 minutes of rest between sets. You can alternate days between upper and lower body, or workout the entire body, but have a rest day in between. • If you have orthopedic issues and need to get back into shape, consult your physical therapist first so that they can communicate with your trainer about which program is best for you. • If you prefer to workout alone, remember safety first. Don’t underestimate the weights by lifting too much, and watch your form. Never bend from your back or rotate to one side while in a flexed position, as this could cause a back injury. Much of Stacy’s work is also dedicated to photographing pets. Seeing them larger than life in print brings endless joy to families and couples. She also donates her time to Guide Dogs Of The Desert, photographing clients with their newly received guide dogs who open up a whole new world of possibility. Considered the leading expert in the Coachella Valley for personal and business branding photography, Stacy goes beyond the headshot in photographing commercial clients. She can help your business by improving its image online and in print. Other deductions have also been slashed, including educator expenses that exceed the initial $250 deduction and required expenses for our first responders and service employees - such as dues, range expenses, vanpool and uniform maintenance. In addition, taxpayers who pay fees for the management of their portfolio will also lose out on future deductions. Several other expenses – such as investment expenses, union dues, tax preparation fees, safe deposit box fees and more – have simply gone away.

PLAN NOW, SAVE LATER: TIPS FOR SURVIVING THE 2018 TAX CHANGES Submitted by: Mary Barnett, Enrolled Agent, Osborne Rincon CPAs

Affected taxpayers will need to rethink the way these expenses are handled with their employers or within their larger financial plan. If these changes will impact you, it is imperative that you plan for 2018. Talk to your CPA or tax advisor about what you can do to minimize the tax impact for 2018. Your tax professional will be able to help you plan your 2018 tax liability, considering the loss of these business deductions. Taking the time to prepare for 2018 will help you make solid decisions, such as investing more in a retirement account, increasing your federal withholding, making estimated tax payments, or even talking to your employers to see if they might be interested in partnering with you on covering business-related expenses. (Remember, all of the expenses incurred while conducting business can be fully deductible by the employer.)

They say that nothing certain in life except death and taxes, but that doesn’t quite hold true for 2018. The massive GOP tax cut will finally go into effect and cause major changes, but with a little bit of planning you can come out on top.

Above all, communication is vital, and minimizing tax within the limits of the law is important. Keeping your hard-earned money in your pocket helps everyone, and working together and partnering with your tax professional will help you achieve your goals.

One of the biggest shifts is the loss of unreimbursed business expenses. Previously, taxpayers could deduct unreimbursed business expenses: auto expenses, travel, lodging, supplies, mandatory continuing education and training, and more. Under the new tax plan, those deductions are no longer possible.

If you are injured at work, you are entitled to benefits under the California Workers’ Compensation System. Here’s what you need to know: • Report any injury immediately to your employer. • There are different types of injuries. Some result from a specific incident, while others show symptoms over a period of time. It is of great benefit to obtain a free professional consultation by a licensed attorney who is familiar with the Workers’ Compensation System. • The benefits you could be entitled to may include medical treatment, temporary disability, permanent disability, supplemental job displacement benefits, and/or death benefits. • It costs you no direct out of pocket money to be represented in a work injury case. The attorney only gets paid at the end of the case if they get you recovery, with a standard percentage fee of 15%. • You cannot legally be fired or discriminated against for reporting a work injury or filing a claim for a work injury. • Once an injury is reported, your employer must give you a claim form within one working day. You will complete and sign it, keeping a copy for yourself. Every symptom should be included on the form, no matter how minor. You are then sent by your employer for treatment. ARTS EDUCATION AND THE LA QUINTA ART ASSOCIATION As a child, Arts and Crafts time always seemed to trigger an intense state of attention and wonder. When I joined the La Quinta Art’s Association, I advocated that providing assistance for the delivery of Art education in our local classrooms would encourage our youth to pursue creative endeavors. This outreach led me to discover that the need surpassed “encouragement”, and the extent of its worth continues to reveal itself. Children face challenges like the rest of us need productive ways to express themselves. Art maintains a therapeutic potency and the potential to provide an outlet for healing. Facilitating discussions about art, and potentially providing an array of materials for the discovery of creative skills, will further the ability of the children to partake in their imaginative intelligences. Creative processes evoke resourcefulness from an early age. The need to manipulate mediums, and employ different techniques, illuminate art’s tendency to summon and build problem-solving abilities and confidence. The use of paintbrushes, crayons, and pencils not only activate and develop small muscles, but also enhance hand-eye coordination. Art is a means by which we connect to each other humans and to our history. As a visual, instinctive language, continuing to cross communicative barriers, it is displayed in nearly every aspect of our working lives. The displacement of Fine and Performing Arts budgets is bound to have a long-term psychological impact on our children. The aim of limiting the negative effects is a noble one.

THE RIGHT EDGE While you may have personal preferences, the functionality of a serrated blade versus a straight-edged blade really depends on what you’re using it for. The best analogy would be having the right tool for the right job. So here are some tips for choosing the right knife for the job. Straight-Edge A straight-edged blade looks exactly how it sounds: straight. The great thing about straight-edged blades is that it is typically extremely keen and pointed. This sharpness allows for better precision and control over the knife. It’s also ideal for anything that requires chopping. Serrated Edge Edges with fine-protruding teeth are serrated. Unlike the straight-edged blade, serrated blades are less precise and tend to rip and tear your food. They are fantastic for slice cuts, which require you to drag the edge of the the blade back and forth over the object to cut it. For example, items like bread and tomatoes are best cut with a serrated knife. A disadvantage, however, is that serrated edges cannot be sharpened. Double-D (double durable) Edge The Double-D edge has three distinct cutting edges that cut food, whether you are moving forward, backward, or straight down. Double-D edges can be factory sharpened, unlike a serrated edge. The Double-D edge uses the tips along the blade to protect the small cutting edges so that the blade stays sharp

HIPAA COMPLIANCE OVERVIEW What is HIPAA? The Health Information Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 and the HITECH Act of 2009. HIPAA has three rules: Privacy Rule, Security Rule, and the Omnibus Final Rule. These rules apply to all healthcare providers who bill electronically as well as the health plans that pay for medical treatment. HIPAA also applies to many businesses and payers that work with healthcare providers who may come into contact with patient information. It also covers patient rights and penalties for data breaches.

81581 Hwy 111 Indio 68100 Ramon Rd. Cathedral City

What does HIPAA protect? The Privacy Rule protects patient health information, which includes an identifier, plus any information regarding treatment or diagnosis of the patient, or health care payment information.

Enjoy life at the top

The Security Rule protects ePHI from loss or unauthorized access. The first requirement of the security rule is a risk assessment. This must be done annually to identify HIPAA compliance vulnerabilities within an organization. The next step is Risk management, which identifies how you eliminate the risk, avoid the risk, or minimize the effect of the risk. The Omnibus Final Rule increased HIPAA enforcement, defines data breaches, and requires business associates to sign an HIPAA compliance agreement. What is the IT Solution providers role in all of this? First, our own company must be compliant. This means conducting Annual Risk Assessments, having HIPAA specific policies and procedures in place and a workforce trained in HIPAA compliance, and delivering HIPAA compliant services to our clients We also assist clients with their compliance needs, including annual risk assessments and reviewing policies and procedures.

BENIGN SKIN GROWTHS

PLAY BALL, LA QUINTA! YOUTH SPORTS • Boys & Girls, 7 – 14 years old • March – April 2018 session will feature INDOOR SOCCER • Learn sportsmanship, integrity, and respect • Monday & Wednesday nights, 5:30 – 7 p.m. at Colonel Paige Middle School* * Kids do not need to be a student at Colonel Paige Middle School to participate.

Of course, we’d all prefer our skin be a smooth, unblemished surface, but unfortunately aberrations do occur. Two of the more common skin conditions that crop up are seborrheic keratosis and skin tags. Here’s a guide to help you recognize these benign skin growths. Sign of the times As you move through your middle age years and beyond, chances are you’ll develop a seborrheic keratoses or two. Some look like a wart, others resemble dabs of brown candle wax.. Seborrheic keratoses can pop up anywhere on your skin, but most often, you’ll see them on the chest, back, head, or neck. Although it’s possible to develop just one, frequently they appear in clusters. If you’re troubled by their appearance, there are a number of treatments available. Unwelcome tagalong There’s a good chance you have or have had a skin tag – egg-shaped growths attached to a fleshy stalk. It’s estimated that almost half of adults have at least one of these harmless growths. They tend to appear in the body’s creases and folds, such as the neck, armpits, groin and eyelids. Usually small in size, skin tags aren’t painful, but they can be annoying. Removal can be accomplished by freezing them off using liquid nitrogen, through electrodessication, which employs an electrical current., or having them neatly excised.

ADULT SPORTS • Co-ed and Men’s Softball Leagues • Leagues run year-round in 8-week sessions – sign up now for the next one!

Remember, unusual skin growths do warrant examination. However, there is no real cause for alarm should either of the above conditions arise. For more information, contact Dr. Timothy Jochen, board certified dermatologist and founder of Contour Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center, at (760) 423-4000 or visit www.contourderm.com . 10 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE RENTING YOUR HOME Submitted by: Randy George

1. City License and Permit: Check with the local city office regarding the current vacation rental ordinances and required forms. Verify the city is issuing new vacation rental permits and that the home can be permitted. 2. HOA Restrictions: If your home is located inside an HOA, check the CC&R’s to verify that short term rentals are permitted. 3. Vacation Rental Insurance: It’s different from regular homeowners insurance; make sure to cover your home appropriately.

4. Tax: Check with your accountant to see what requirements or suggestions he or she may have. 5. Think about Amenities: Guests want to stay at a vacation rental with amenities they do not have at home. In our area the most sought after amenities are private pools/spas, a fire pit, golf putting area, video games, and flat screen TVs. 6. Deep Cleaning: Consider hiring professionals to do a thorough cleaning of your vacation rental. Add mattress protectors to all your beds, and consider adding pillow tops. 7. Touch-ups: You might not need to paint the entire house, just the most used and/or visible areas (living room, entryway, and kitchen). 8. Add Visual Interest: An inexpensive option is to frame some scenic photographs of our beautiful desert or iconic local locations. 9. Upgrade Linens. Vacationers love large, soft towels and comfy linens. Sheets that are 400 thread count or higher are softer and tend to last longer. 10. No Bar Soap. Instead, opt for some refillable pumps. They’re not as messy, and you won’t have to constantly replace partially used bars. For other tips contact Palm Springs Vacation Homes at 760-608-8400.
