As more consumers are choosing to shop local, it has greatly benefited our local businesses as well as the La Quinta economy. There’s no question that the “shop local” trend is on the rise. As a result, the majority of U.S. small businesses entered this year with stronger sales growth, improved profitability and positive hiring trends. This growth is allowing small business to quickly become the backbone of the local economy. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, employer firms with fewer than 100 workers employed 34.3% of private sector payrolls and those with less than 20 workers employed almost 20%. Our community is made up of 100’s of these small business - restaurants, grocery stores, and service related companies such as: pool and house cleaning, landscaping, property management and insurance companies; just to name a few. As I mentioned last month, the majority of these local businesses are now open year round to accommodate the needs of both the full time residents as well as our transient snow-bird visitor population. The Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce and the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce is made up of over 1,200 local businesses, most of which fall into this small business category. In support of these local employers; Saturday, November 26th, we will recognize Small Business Saturday. Akin to Black Friday or Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers to shop small, local brick and mortar stores rather than patronizing big box retail and e-commerce stores. With 100’s of these businesses located right here in La Quinta, I would encourage you to not only participate and shop on Small Business Saturday, but to shop small and local for all of your holiday shopping needs.

BUSINESS PROFILE: LA QUINTA BREWING CO. Submitted by: GCVCC Staff

La Quinta Brewing Co invites beer connoisseurs, new friends and frequent flyers to visit the Old Town Taproom where you will find a full line up of beer and limited releases not available in stores. Prefer growlers to bottles? Don’t worry about it, you can fill a growler or two with your favorite beer (bring your own or buy one on location). Prefer wine or cider? The crew at the taproom still has you covered. They will insist on giving you tastings of what they have on tap that might be close to your palette before pouring you a glass of vino, because they are passionate beer lovers and might just find you a new favorite drink. Beer might by the draw, but the Taproom also offers a plethora of games to play, TVs to watch sports, special events and live music. Follow them on social media for updates, more details and inspiring posts to help get you to 5 o’clock. Food is not always available, but taproom team members encourage you to bring food in or have it delivered—they are also available to help you eat it should you order too much! Lacy E. says, “By far my favorite microbrewery, the taproom is always lively and staff is very friendly. My favorite beers are 1) Bourbon Barrel Aged Koffi Porter because it has hints of vanilla and coffee), 2) SandStorm, a double IPA with tastes of citrus and pine, and 3) Indian Canyon IPA, which is my go-to on summer days here in the desert.”

You will find La Quinta Brewing Co to be proud supports of local events throughout the desert. Whether it’s hosting fundraisers at the taproom or sponsoring community events, they strive to bring locals and desert visitor’s superior craft beer with a fun, resort, style vibe uniquely found here in the desert. Old Town Taproom is located right in the heart of Old Town at 78065 Main Street, #100. They are open Sunday through Thursday, from Noon to 10:00 pm and Friday & Saturday, from Noon to Midnight. www.laquintabrewing.com | @LaQuintaBrewing

BEST BEVERAGE SPOTS IN LQ Submitted by: GCVCC Staff Salude—Prost—Santé—Cheers! Throughout history, people have clanked together their glasses for numerous reasons. Some think the sound of glasses clanking would scare away evil spirits; others are wishing each other well, toasting to good health or simply expressing joy at being together. La Quinta is the premier playground for active living where everyone has access to world-class golf courses, resort escapes, boutique shops, national retailers, endless dining options and a great selection of locations for you to get any drink your heart may desire. Happy Hour Looking for a great deal on bites and drinks? Whether you are looking for the 19th hole or for the perfect place to enjoy a drink after a long day (or week) of work—happy hour might be the right fit for you. Many restaurants in La Quinta offer Happy Hour menus, but a few restaurants offer their guest more than an hour. Stuft Pizza has earned a reputation throughout the Coachella Valley for quality pizza, appetizers, entrees, and drinks. Guests can enjoy draft beers, house wines, and Stuft Sangria from 3:00 to 6:00 pm every day throughout the entire restaurant. When ordering your drink, don’t forget to pick a couple small plates that might pair perfectly. Green bean fries, grilled artichoke, and asiago mac-and-cheese are some local favorites. Just around the corner in Old Town La Quinta is Old Town Tavern where you can enjoy happy hour Wednesday through Monday from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Tavern snacks like tacos, chicken wings, or wedge salads are available for $6. Draft beer is available at $2 off regular price and all house wines are $4. Old Town Tavern has something for everyone, including a dog-friendly patio. Staycation vibes Been too busy to get away for the weekend or plan your next vacation? Then you need a drink. A great alternative is a staycation, where you can enjoy a vacation-like experience without venturing too far from home. Skip right to drinks at sunset without needing to pack any bags. Casa Mendoza is a casual Mexican restaurant & cantina offering favorite dishes and margaritas by the glass or pitcher. Instead of traveling to Cancun or Puerto Vallarta, head just outside of Old Town to Casa Mendoza. The restaurant recently renovated and expanded the inside dining space to allow more guests to join them for food & drinks—or just drinks. The Mendoza Margarita comes in all shapes and sizes, including skinny. Looking for a little spice? Try the jalapeño margarita made with tequila, freshly crushed 8 | GCVCC.ORG

jalapeños, homemade margarita mix, and fresh lime juice. Don’t like the kick of jalapeños, get the cucumber margarita instead! Thousands of guests stay at La Quinta Resort & Club every year—but here’s a little secret: you don’t need a room reservation to enjoy the feelgood cuisine and fine dining options. Famed for its award-winning tamales, Adobe Grill offers authentic Mexican dining. Let their talented bartenders craft you a signature margarita from one of more than 100 tequilas. Feeling fancy? Then enjoy locally sourced products and top-shelf liquor at Morgan’s in The Desert. Skip dessert but enjoy something sweet. You can get a well-made classic cocktail like an old fashioned or Manhattan. You can also indulge in the delicious Key Lime Pie cocktail served up with a graham cracker rim or the deviously delicious Thin Mint cocktail made with Godiva chocolate served on the rocks. Date Night Everyone needs a date night. Plan a night out with someone you love—S.O., husband/wife, sibling(s), and friend(s)—or treat yourself. One of the great things about having perfect weather through fall, winter and spring is dining al fresco. Take in brilliant stars and fresh air while enjoying a few drinks and cheers to good health & joy. Lavender Bistro has several seating options for their guests: the main dining room, their ‘award-winning patio’ filled with hundreds of sparkling lights or the fireside lounge. Looking for lighter fare, visit their lively fireside lounge where happy hour and live music is offered nightly from 4:00 pm to close. Love vino? Enjoy your favorite bottle of wine while you dine without a corkage fee every Sunday in the main dining room and on the outside patio. If you want to save your own bottles for the holidays, plan your night out for Tuesday when you can enjoy half price on bottles of wine. The newly remodeled eatery, La Quinta Cliffhouse Grill & Bar, has remained a Coachella Valley favorite for upscale casual dining since it first opened its doors. Whether you are looking to celebrate a special occasion, stop in for a weekday dinner, or post up at the bar, the food and warm atmosphere makes La Quinta Cliffouse the perfect date night option. Draft and Bottle beer options will keep anyone hoppy. Ask for the wine list to see all the options that range from house wine by the glass to a flute of Dom Pérignon 2009 Brute Champagne. Late Night After a great evening out, sometimes you’re not ready for the fun to end. If you are closer to The Cove, La Quinta Breweries Old Town Taproom offers their award-winning craft beers (check out their website for the current tap list, www.laquintabrewing.com), but also domestic bottle beer, cider, and wine. Open late night and conveniently located near Highway 111 for easy Taxi/Uber/Lyft rides is The Beer Hunter. A recent count shows they offer almost 200 craft brews, bottled beers, as well as sour and fruit beers. Handcrafted cocktails and wine are also available from 11:00 am to 2:00 am every day. Try one or try them all—just don’t try to do it all in one night. Somewhere in La Quinta you will find your new favorite watering hole or maybe discover a new drink at your go-to bar. Cheers!

PHYSICAL FITNESS IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Submitted By: Robert Puentes, Nubells Physical Fitness is often in the news today, and at the top of people’s minds as exercise trends come and go. Looking across our recent history however, reveals it is not a new concern. After WWII, many Americans were concerned that the popularity of the television was causing our youth to become out of shape. President John F. Kennedy showed his commitment to improving the health of the nation by creating the President’s Council on Physical Fitness, which still exists today and has counted Bud Wilkinson, Stan Musial, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Michele Obama among its leaders. Kennedy started requiring schools to implement physical fitness programs and created the US Physical Fitness Program. Around that same time bodybuilders and the “muscle beach” crowd created gyms filled with free weights and the “health club” was born. As technology improved, machines, cables, and cardio machines were introduced to the fitness business. Those machines would eventually become big business, with rows of ellipticals, treadmills, stair masters, rowing machines and more lining the floors of major gyms. Today, one cannot drive down a busy street without seeing a health club, gym, CrossFit, or yoga studio. With all these gyms, are we really in better shape? More importantly, are we healthier than we were 50 years ago? Sadly, forgotten in the gym craze is that working out is only one piece of the puzzle when striving for health and fitness. Proper nutrition, quality sleep, and stress reduction are just as important, if not more, than physical exercise. Our busy lifestyles and the availability

of high-fat, high-carbohydrate junk food on every corner has caused many Americans to be overweight. According to the CDC, in 1980, one state had an obesity rate over 20%. Thirty years later, only one state had an obesity rate below 20%. That is a shocking statistic, one that shows there is more to having a healthy community than just a proliferation of gyms. Striving for physical exercise and proper nutrition requires discipline and education. Based on many years of training and 21 years in the Marines, it is my opinion that the vast majority of people will benefit from a well thought out progressive resistance weight training program 3-4 times per week with some type of cardiovascular training. Physical training should also compliment a quality diet consisting of clean protein, healthy fats, and moderate complex carbohydrates. Fitness is as important as it has ever been. As our knowledge of health and well-being continues to increase, we need to be sure we are taking an approach to fitness that encompasses all aspects of keeping our body healthy and strong. Robert Puentes is a retired US Marine Gunnery Sgt and lifelong weightlifter, fitness and nutrition enthusiast. Robert is the creator and founder of the high protein Gorilla Cookie Company, which can be found online at thegorillacookie.com. He is also a distributor, coach, and researcher for Nubells, a modern, new, ergonomic dumbbell system. “Gunny” can be reached at 760.409.3778, or at puentesrc@gmail.com. Semper Fi.

Imagine sitting at a Thanksgiving dinner table piled high with the most delicious, nutritious food imaginable, but when the servings are distributed, your plate remains empty. This is the reality for millions of people in California whose budget does not allow for daily, nutritious foods let alone holiday feasts – ironic for the state which provides the nation with the vast majority of its fresh produce. Many community members live at or below the Federal definition of poverty. For a variety of reasons, income goes to housing, utilities, medical bills and other expenses, making it difficult to afford food. Fortunately, for those who qualify, the SNAP program (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), called CalFresh, helps bridge the gap. Every week at each one of the Certified Farmers’ Markets of Coachella Valley including Old Town La Quinta, CalFresh customers use their federal nutrition incentives, distributed in wooden tokens to purchase food and may also receive up to $10 in “FINI Market Match” tokens for fresh produce purchased directly from the farmers. “WIC” families can also redeem the nutrition currency provided through their program at the Farmers Markets. This includes the monthly Fruit and Veggie Checks and a $10-for-$10 cash match when they purchase “Market Buck” tokens. Thanks to the Certified Farmers’ Market for bringing economic support to small family farmers and for nourishing Coachella Valley residents. Old Town La Quinta is a proud sponsor of the Farmers’ Market and wishes a Happy Thanksgiving to all. PAINTING AND THE AGING MIND Submitted by: Tina Escobar, Artist at Heart

Engaging the mind in creative artistic activities may help protect neurons from dying and stimulate new growth. Numerous studies show painting can reduce anxiety and depression which are often symptoms of chronic diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Further research demonstrates the creativity and imagination of older adults can bloom later in life, helping them achieve unique and unrealized potentials, even while suffering from Alzheimer’s or other chronic diseases. One Mayo Clinic study shows painting, drawing and sculpting in old age lowers the risk of developing the first signs of dementia by 73%. Dr. Clare Walton, Research Manager at Alzheimer’s Society, says “Although this study looks at mild cognitive impairment rather than dementia, it does add to previous evidence that keeping your brain active during life with arts, crafts and social activities might reduce the risk of developing memory problems. Neural research demonstrates that training in visual art production enhances functional connectivity of the brain, strengthening the resiliency of the aging mind. • • • • • • • • • • •

A few of the many benefits of painting include: provides a sense of control reduces depression and anxiety reduces stress assists in socialization encourages playfulness and a sense of humor improves cognition stronger sense of identity increases self-esteem relaxation Painting is an expressive medium that can create new pathways to communication.

I recently had the opportunity to paint with a group of Alzheimer’s patients and their care partners. The pinnacle moment was when one the participants said, “as soon as I started painting I was 5 years old.” He didn’t feel like he was five, in that moment he was once again a small child filled with wonder and joy. It warms my heart to have been part of making that moment happen. You don’t need to have Alzheimer’s to enjoy all the benefits of painting. Painting benefits children and people of all ages in many ways. ANNUAL ELECTION VS OPEN ENROLLMENT

Submitted By: Randy Foulds of Foulds & Feldmann Health Insurance Agency In years past, we used two terms, Annual Election Period (AEP) and Open Enrollment Period (OEP), to describe the same thing. Both referred to the Fall time period, October 15 – December 7, when Medicare beneficiaries could make changes to their Advantage plans or prescription drug plans. For 2019 plan enrollment, all that will change again. This year, the AEP fall time period remains the same, October 15 – December 7. But, Medicare has now added a second time period, January 1 – March 31 to be known as Open Enrollment Period (OEP). Let’s look at how the two periods are different.

CHANGE YOUR CLOCK AND BATTERIES Submitted By: DK Systems

Most people do not think about their smoke detectors. It’s easy to forget about them until they begin chirping. With Daylight Saving Time ending Sunday, November 4th, in addition to changing your clocks, change the batteries in your smoke detectors. Smoke detectors typically last about 8-10 years, with regular maintenance of dusting and changing batteries. Without proper maintenance, they become problematic and need to be replaced earlier. Properly working smoke detectors offer early warning of fire, allowing people time to escape to safety. If you have smoke detectors connected to your alarm system, contact your provider for service. Do not rely on worn-out or outdated devices to protect your loved ones. Smoke detectors are not the only life saving device to be concerned about. You should also check and replace the battery on carbon monoxide detectors. •

Smoke Alarm Statistics provided by www.nfpa.org:

The death rate per 100 reported home fires was more than twice as high in homes that did not have any working smoke alarms compared to the rate in homes with working smoke alarms (1.18 deaths vs. 0.53 deaths per 100 fires).

In fires in which the smoke alarms were present but did not operate, almost half (46%) of the smoke alarms had missing or disconnected batteries.

Dead batteries caused one-quarter (24%) of the smoke alarm failures.

DK Systems is here to help. If you would like to schedule service to replace your smoke detector batteries, please call them at 760-360-4793. 22 | GCVCC.ORG

During AEP, you can do any of the following: enroll in an Advantage plan for the first time; change from one Advantage plan to another; disenroll from an Advantage plan and return to traditional Medicare; enroll in a prescription drug plan for the first time; change from one drug plan to another; or drop your drug plan coverage. You are allowed to change your enrollment as many times as you like during this period, with the last change made before December 7 being the plan that will effective January 1. During the new OEP, you will be allowed to only make one change. That change can only be one of the following: change from one Advantage plan to another; or drop your Advantage plan and return to traditional Medicare. Note that you cannot use the new OEP to enroll in an Advantage plan for the first time. It simply is an opportunity to change your existing plan. Neither the AEP nor the OEP affect Medicare Supplements. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Supplement, the AEP and the OEP do not affect your supplement plan at all. But, you may have a drug plan (Part D) that you will want to review. That can only be done during the AEP, October 15 – December 7, not the OEP. MAKE A LIST, CHECK IT TWICE! SIX TOP HOLIDAY TAX TIPS Submitted By: Sofia P. Hinojosa, CPA, Osborne Rincon CPAs

With the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s easy to forget about tax deadlines on the horizon. With these tips, get ahead of your planning before time runs out. 1. Check Your Charities Since the standard deduction has been increased, you may no longer receive a tax benefit for making a contribution to your favorite charity. The deduction for single filers increased from $6,350 in 2017 to $12,000 in 2018; for married couples filing jointly, it’s moved from $12,700 to $24,000. Rather than making small yearly contributions, you can double-up and make a larger contribution this year (and every other year moving forward) to make sure you get over these limits and take full advantage of your deductions. 2. Make Certain of Medical Expenses In 2018, you still can take advantage of deducting medical expenses in excess of 7.5% of AGI, rather than 10%. Therefore, you may want to consider paying all your medical expenses by 12/31, rather than waiting until January 2019. 3. Balance Your Bills For business owners, it’s always a good idea to get bills paid by year-end to take advantage of the deduction and decrease your taxable income. At the same time, you may want to postpone collecting on any contracts drawn in late December, so you can defer that income until 2019. 4. Get Your Affairs in Order Have you considered a living trust, last will and/or medical directive? These are all important topics to discuss with family, and to have in place in case tragedy were to suddenly strike. Talk to your attorney and/or CPA about your needs and how they can help create these documents for you now to protect your assets in the future. 5. Make a Business Plan If you’re a business owner, have you thought about what will happen to your business when you’re gone? Will your spouse or children inherit it? If so, are they trained to take over for you? Or, will they sell it and leave the proceeds to your family, or your favorite charity? 6. Settle Your Student Loans If you have outstanding student loans and have not maxed out on the $2,500 ‘above-the-line’ deduction for interest paid, consider using some of your holiday cash to make a final payment before the year is over. To start planning your tax strategy for 2019 and beyond, contact us today! Sofia Hinojosa graduated from University of San Diego with a Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy in 2007. She received her CPA designation in 2010. For more information contact Osborne Rincon CPAs at 760-777-9805 or visit them online at OsborneRincon.com.

A STRONG HOUSING MARKET IS AT THE NEXUS OF A HEALTHY ECONOMY Submitted By: Donna Ambrose, REALTOR®, Keller Williams Realty, La Quinta

The longest running bull market on record, strong employment and savvy local planning is helping drive home sales and prices higher. With renewed finances and optimism, home buyers are capitalizing on the opportunity to buy their dream vacation and retirement homes and for many, the city of La Quinta is at the top of the list. Since January, Coachella Valley home sales and prices on average have increased, and the city of La Quinta is among those in the Valley seeing high single and double-digit monthly year-over-year increases. Perhaps another key factor for the increased attraction is the good work being done to promote and expand our local business community. Tourism and hospitality are the area’s principal industries and the City of La Quinta and vicinity is ground zero for some of the Coachella Valley’s most entertaining and lucrative events. Annually, these events lure hundreds of thousands of top talent, celebrities, athletes, and spectators from every corner of the world. Throughout the season, local restaurants, shops, and resorts are filled with eager patrons, and happy business owners. The City of La Quinta and our Chamber of Commerce has done a fine job of leveraging these opportunities to help build our community. As a La Quinta resident, I can attest that our City is well-managed and maintained by its government leaders, and by a staff that is bright, innovative and passionate about serving. The City’s public infrastructure is robust, and law enforcement keeps its businesses and neighborhoods feeling safe and secure. What’s more, the beautification and cleanliness of places like Old Town La Quinta offers residents and visitors a welcome gathering spot to commune, shop, eat and entertain. The city’s Civic Center with its Library and Wellness Center is an oasis of beauty, education and well-being. It’s easy to speculate that for the foreseeable future, the housing market will continue to see financial benefits enjoyed by home buyers and sellers due to a strong local and national economy. Donna Ambrose is delighted to have joined the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce. A business owner and former economic development business leader, for thirty-years, she has been called upon to create and restructure businesses and government programs. An avid real estate enthusiast, she was a practicing REALTOR® in WA State for 10 years, before moving to Trilogy at La Quinta, two-years ago. Understanding full well, the dynamics of rapidly changing markets and industry, and not one to overlook a challenge, Donna has innovated a new real estate business strategy that fits neatly in between the cold and impersonal algorithms of companies like Zillow and ‘i-Buyers, and that of, ‘real estate-asusual.’ She knows from experience, “that one-size-fits-all” business does not work when dealing with matters of finance and the heart. So, Donna designed her real estate services to best achieve the personal goals of customers. Specifically, she provides them a menu of services, flexible commission options, superior marketing, and proprietary direct to target-market networks. Donna believes to succeed today, you must adapt services to your customers, be willing to adjust quickly to change and offer superior quality. SHOP LOCAL – ONLINE!

Submitted By: Kelly Edgar of LuLaRoe with Kelly Ann With the holidays fast approaching, shopping online is becoming an increasingly viable option for everyone on your holiday gift giving list. There are numerous advantages to shopping local businesses online and with the busy lifestyle that most of us lead, why not take the stress out of shopping? Shopping local stores online is convenient especially as we approach the holidays and here are seven reasons why. 1. Support local small businesses by taking advantage of website shopping any time of the day. 2. For busy parents, you do not have to load the kids in the car or find a babysitter. 3. For working professionals, after a long day at the office you can shop from home or wherever you are.

3. Service - after all of your hard work, you don’t want to be handling dishes, food, clean up, etc. Be sure that the venue you select has a reputation for stellar service and a style that is congruent with your event. For example, you would not necessarily want a stuffy, formal service for a BBQ-style event, just as you would not want a casual service for a black-tie dinner. If possible, dine in the venue you are considering to see how the staff makes you feel and their level of interaction and professionalism.

EVENT PLANNING MADE EASY

Submitted By: Cindy Burreson, Renaissance Indian Wells Resort & Spa Have you ever attempted to plan an event or party and worried that you may be missing some key elements? Here is a quick cheat sheet for the next time you are in charge of planning, to make you look like a pro: 1.

Venue - select a venue that lends itself to the overall theme or formality of your event. Keep in mind weather elements and always plan a backup space if you select an outdoor venue. Also, be sure that you have a diagram of the space with the configuration you envision to make sure that it will be suitable for your needs.

2. Food and Beverage - planning menus for a group can be challenging especially in the day of “dietary restrictions.” Heed the advice of the Chef at your venue who has the experience and can recommend items that may be more universally enjoyed as well as what works for different times of the day and seasons. With regard to the bar, there are several options for bar offerings from a hosted bar (you pay) to a cash bar (guests pay) to hosting only certain items such as beer and wine or a signature cocktail, or no bar service at all. When selecting your bar options, take into consideration both cost and liability.

4. Theme/Design - if this is not your forte, rest assured there are many experts who have made design their profession. If you want to take on the task, you can create design simply with a color theme, food selections, florals or décor. Be consistent with patterns, textures and styles to create cohesion. If you still are uncomfortable with the process, leave it to the experts! Event professionals have years of experience and ideas, and we do the work while giving you all the credit! Above all, have FUN! Cindy Burreson is a Senior Catering Sales Executive at Renaissance Indian Wells Resort & Spa. She can be reached at 760.773.4697. SOLUTIONS FOR SCARS

Submitted By: Dr. Timothy Jochen, board certified dermatologist and founder of Contour Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center Cuts, scrapes, burns, trauma brought about by surgery, acne and other skin conditions, even pregnancy can contribute to the formation of scars. Some may be easy to conceal or are so minor only time is required for them to mostly disappear. But other scars can result in disfigurement and are not so readily disguised. The goal of treating a scar is not only to make it look better, but to make it so no one can tell you ever had a scar. Many factors determine a scar’s appearance and ultimately its treatment. Degree of severity of the initial wound or cut and its location matter, as do age, heredity, gender and ethnicity. Sometimes a single method is effective. Other times a combination of treatments is necessary to achieve optimum results. Acne Scars Many people who have been bothered by acne scars for years are excited to know there is hope for a smoother, more even complexion again. Solutions like dermabrasion, microneedling and a variety of laser resurfacing therapies can work wonders. Minor surgical techniques can be performed to elevate deeper scars while filler injections plump skin depressions. Usually a combination of treatments works best for acne scars. Burn Scars Laser therapies, microneedling, prescription and non-prescription antibiotic creams are just a few of the methods we use to improve the appearance of red and raised scars left in the wake of a burn injury. Hypopigmented or White Scars A thin white scar is the result of natural healing and a reduction of melanin, the substance responsible for pigmentation of the skin. This type of scar is one of the most difficult to reverse. Silicone sheeting, surgical grafting, microneedling, treatment with an Excimer Laser, and even a revolutionary approach involving the use of Latisse (yes the product that makes your eyelashes grow) in combination with other therapies such as fractional lasers are all methods that can help a hypopigmented scar. Keloid and Other Raised Scars When healing is overaggressive and an abundance of collagen is produced, a raised scar results. If it extends beyond the original injury, it is known as a keloid scar. These irregularly shaped, hard and rubbery textured scars range in color from pink to red and brown. Itchy and painful, they can grow quite large, be rather unsightly and even impede movement. Typically they occur after surgery or an accident, but have been known to appear spontaneously or as the result of some minor inflammation like acne or a burn or even after a piercing in people who are susceptible to this formation.
