WELCOME TO THE CITY OF FESTIVALS! Welcome to the City of Festivals! Indio is the largest and fastest growing city in Eastern Riverside County. We celebrate Indio’s 90th Anniversary on May 16, 2020. As the original Coachella Valley city known as the “Hub of the Valley,” we are continuing our legacy as the center of tourism, housing, and commerce in the region. Nearly 1.4 million people visit our community every year to attend among the most famous music, food, and arts festivals in the world. Matador Network ranked Indio as the No. 1 City in the Nation for Live Music, and popular travel site, Trivago, named Indio as the No. 2 Top Emerging Travel Destination. We host the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Stagecoach California’s Country Music Festival, Indio International Tamale Festival, Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival, Indio Southwest Arts Festival, and California BBQ State Championship. Once a Union Pacific Railroad depot, the City of Indio continues to be a global destination with a small-town feel. We take priority in preserving our local heritage, celebrating our diversity, and showcasing our art. The Coachella Valley History Museum contains the original 1909 School House, Date Museum, and the refurbished M. H. Whittier Ranch Water Tower. Throughout our Downtown, you can see our great murals and sculptures that celebrate our history and spirit of community. You can also watch awardwinning theater productions by Desert Theatreworks at the Indio Performing Arts Center. Indio is a year-round community and nearly 90,000 people call us home. We expect to reach 135,000 in population by 2035. More than 2,700 new housing units are under construction or being planned in the next few years to accommodate this growth, and we project adding 54,000 residential units by 2035. Families are moving here because of our parks, schools, and outstanding public safety services. In fact, the Indio Police Department was recognized as

one of 15 cities in the nation to serve as a model for the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The College of the Desert is moving forward with expanding its campus in Downtown Indio, and the opening of the John J. Benoit Detention Center will add jobs and economic growth to our City that is already known as the center for law and legal studies in the Coachella Valley. Our restaurant, retail, hotel, and healthcare service sectors are also growing. Burlington, Tractor Supply Co. and El Super grocery store opened this past year. In addition, a new Maya Cinemas movie theater and Golden Coral restaurant are coming, and there are plans proposed for the Indio Grand Marketplace (former Indio Fashion Mall) to become an outdoor lifestyle and entertainment center. To accommodate millions of visitors to our city, a new Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott opened this year and a new Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton is under construction. JFK Memorial Hospital will be undergoing major expansion and remodeling, and the Loma Linda University Children’s Health Clinic in Downtown is now open and available to serve more than 135,000 eligible children in the region. There are major infrastructure developments recently completed or planned to keep up with our growth. The Highway 111 widening and beautification project is finished and is giving our residents and visitors easier and safer access to our community. Road improvement projects through many major streets and residential neighborhoods are also underway thanks to state and federal funds as well as Measure X, which was a voter-approved 1% sales tax measure passed in 2016 for infrastructure improvements and public safety. I am excited about our growth and bright future ahead. We welcome you to our beloved City of Indio and I hope you enjoy your time with us!

CELEBRATE IN WORLDFAMOUS INDIO As Indio reaches its 90th year of incorporation, we pause to celebrate a city that has given so much to so many. As a proud son of Indio, I have watched it grow and evolve as a community, as a center of business in the valley, and as an international destination. It serves a diverse population that truly reflects the spirit of the west; always moving forward, always progressing. Our publication for this year focuses on art. The Indio Chamber of Commerce was a proud early promoter of the arts in Indio, helping to support many of the beautiful murals that adorn our city. From famous artists that bring their talents from all over the world, to the local artists that produce work everyday at the Coachella Valley Art Center, art is part of the fabric of Indio. We are proud to celebrate that tradition anew in this edition of Discover Indio. Of course, Indio still knows how to party as well! Known as the City of Festivals, Indio has become world-famous for its entertainment options. Home to the world’s best music festival, the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival rocks the desert twice every year bringing music performers and visitors from around the globe. Immediately following is the equally successful Stagecoach California’s Country Music Festival. If you’re looking for family fun, check out the

Riverside Country Fair and National Date Festival or the annual Tamale Festival. The annual Indio Powwow celebrates the culture of the desert’s native people. Don’t miss one of the best Taste events in the Valley! The 5th Annual Taste of Indio will take place at Jackalope Ranch. The BBQ State Championship & Festival is a sanctioned championship event, judged by certified KCBS (Kansas City Barbeque Society) judges with points awarded towards a coveted California State Title. The Cabazon Indio Powwow is held at the Fantasy Springs Special Events Center in Indio. Visitors can join dancers in the arena during selected times to participate in a noncompetitive inter-tribal dance. INDIO INTERNATIONAL TAMALE FESTIVAL
Created in 1992, the Indio International Tamale Festival has become an annual celebration for foodies across Southern California and beyond. The rich heritage of the tamale, consistent community support and hardworking tamale makers have created a tremendous festival. Recently, the Food Network-TV ranked the Indio International Tamale Festival in the top 10 “All-American Food Festivals” in the nation! Held annually in December, the festival is free to attend. Indio transforms into an international destination for Polo beginning in January and continuing through the start of April. KENNEL CLUB OF PALM SPRINGS DOG SHOW
The Kennel Club of Palm Springs annually hosts one of the most prestigious dog shows in the world and is considered the opening event of the dog show year in the west coast. The Bradshaw Family tradition of superintending dog shows started in 1898 with Jack Bradshaw, and continues through four generations of their family. FAMILY MOTOR COACH ASSOCIATION WESTERN AREA RALLY IN INDIO The Family Motor Coach Association’s annual Western Rally is held in January at the Riverside County Fairgrounds. This 5-day event brings nearly 20,000 visitors to Indio. With approximately 109,000 members, the FMCA is the world’s largest motorhome owners group. Participants gather to socialize, view exhbitis, attend seminars, and enjoy quality entertainment. FMCA.COM
SANDSTORM LACROSSE FESTIVAL IN INDIO
The Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival is the premier co-ed lacrosse event. This is a three-day Lacrosse Competition and is a co-ed lacrosse event power packed with competitive club teams from across North America. Teams are comprised of middle and high school players and are slated to compete on 60 fields in the 2019 event. The event is free and open to the public, and is held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. The Southwest Arts Festival is held every year at the Empire Polo Club. SWAF evolves and attracts high caliber and talented artists each year with their unique artwork. The City of Indio celebrates Arbor Day as the only Tree City USA community in the Coachella Valley. The Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival started as a festival to celebrate the end of the annual date harvest in the desert region, the major commercial dateproducing area in the Western Hemisphere. With the popularity of the date gardens, the idea was planted for the first Date Festival in 1921 to be held in Indio’s city park. In 1940, Riverside County purchased the present fairgrounds it now calls home. For over 70 years, the Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival has thrilled people with family fun that includes rides, parades, and shows. Today the Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival is focused on providing amazing entertainment and affordable fun to area residents. MTV recently declared what has been known for some time now - “Coachella has secured its place among the most well-known festivals in the world.” Held annually at the 330-acre Empire Polo Club in the beautiful Southern California desert, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is one of the most critically acclaimed music festivals in the world, six times selected by Pollstar as the “Festival of the Year” and has made Indio the No. 1 City in the United States for Live Music by Matador Network. Coachella mixes some of the most groundbreaking artists from

The Stagecoach California’s Country Music Festival takes place over three days every April at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. The annual country celebration draws the biggest names in country music. Billboard recently applauded the festival for not being “limited to the groups that have a heavy radio presence: it makes an effort to show country’s breadth and depth. Dates have been a staple food of the Middle East for thousands of years. Dating back to as early as 4,000 BC, dates have found a home in the dry climate and ample sunshine of the Coachella Valley. Indio hosts one of the region’s most famous date gardens – Shields Date Garden. Floyd and Bess Shields came to the California Desert in 1924 and started Shields Date Garden, working long and hard to build up their
business and educate their customers about date culture. In the beginning, Mr. Shields would give his lectures in the garden. As the popularity of his lectures grew, he incorporated a slide show, then recorded his presentation in conjunction with the slide show so that the show could be run several times a day. Today, the 15-minute film “Romance and Sex Life of the Date” runs continuously during store hours, where you can still hear Mr. Shields talking about his favorite subject, the date. Complete with a café, retail store and walking garden, Shields is one of the Coachella Valley’s top tourist destinations.

Other highlights include our Desert Submarine, a Blacksmith’s shop, pioneer farming implements and the archives for the Historical Society. Also, the spacious grounds hold a variety of gardens which include a Memorial Date Garden, Japanese Garden, the Geissler Rose Garden, the Jardin del Desierto (Desert Garden) and our Liberty Tree - the oldest Cork Tree in the Coachella Valley.

A museum dedicated the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians, located on the grounds of Fantasy Springs Resort Cason, gives visitors a chance to “walk in the footsteps of the ancient Cahuilla people.” It features artifact displays, hands-on exhibits, and interpretive scenes of the Native Americans who originally inhabited the Coachella Valley. Over the generations, the Cabazon Band has often faced adversity, but they remain undaunted as they shape their destiny and sustain their most honored cultural values: bound by the land as its custodians, they have rich traditions of unity, leadership and generosity.

The Empire Polo Club is a 330-acre polo club in Indio. Founded in 1987, it hosts international polo tournaments January through April each year. It has twelve polo grounds, making it one of the largest polo clubs on the West coast

Metalrevelations’ work encompasses several types of metal combinations that has produced numerous novel pieces of work throughout the Valley. Tell us about yourself and your journey to becoming a full-time artist.
INSIDE THE ARTIST STUDIO WITH
KATHLEEN SMITHSCHOOLEY Indio is at the heart of a burgeoning art renaissance in the Coachella Valley. From the ongoing Indio mural projects, to new art installations going in around the city, to the most famous music and arts festival in the world, Indio is on the international scene when it comes to the arts. The Discover Indio team recently visited with one of our local artist, Kathleen Smith-Schooley, who owns and operates Metalrevelations in Downtown Indio. The shop creates sculpture and commission pieces working with numerous architects, builders, and design professionals, as well as individual clients. 22
I was born and raised in Western Colorado and pursued my fine arts degree at CSU. Eventually, I went on to Iowa to obtain a Masters degree in Fine Art. My life and career brought me to the Coachella Valley in 1984. I initially worked out of my home studio, but eventually outgrew the space. As my career progressed, I started experimenting with metal sculpture. That pursuit allowed me to team up with a master welder and together we rented space in Indio on Jackson Street and opened shop. We later found a shop to purchase on Deglet Noor Street in Indio, 5,500 square feet that provided ample room for our pieces. My partner has retired and moved, but I still work out of our space. How would you describe the art you make? My art is a contemporary and eclectic mix of metals and other media. I use several specialty finishes on the surface to achieve the look I want. The studio produces custom doors, gates, free-
standing sculpture, and other custom items such as fireplace walls and mantles. Where do you draw inspiration from? I’ve always been inspired by the environment from very early in my career. I am an avid gardener, so I find inspiration in the things I see every day. The life inside a garden is so numerous, from plants to bugs, I find inspiration in the numerous forms they come in. Tell us how your art studio came to be in Indio. What do you like most about working here? The building we are in was a real find. It was originally part of a date processing plant built in the 1940s. I loved that it allowed me to buy a little piece of history to go along with a bigger functional space. Working in Indio has also been a joy. It has a small-town feel while also providing an industrial space with close access for myself and the people who work with me. From murals to our music and art festival, the Indio art scene has just exploded over the past two decades. How do you see the arts playing a role in shaping our community? I really appreciate the murals and art located throughout Indio. Art in public places always plays a big role in inspiring arts. Ultimately, the arts play an important part in everyone’s lives whether they realize it or not. It’s good to see the community in Indio embrace it. ELDORADO POLO CLUB – INDIO THE TOP DESTINATION FOR POLO IN THE WEST! For over 60 years, the club has offered the best conditions in the US for horses to play polo during the Winter months, Indio’s perfect daytime temperatures create an idyllic environment to host world-class polo competitions. Eldorado Polo Club, with 10 full-sized polo fields is one of the largest polo clubs in North America! Each season, players from all over the country and the world call Indio home as they compete in some of the most coveted tournaments in the US. Along with the players, come their superb equine athletes who also call the valley home at Eldorado’s onsite stabling. Up to 500 horses can be seen exercising on the club’s mile-long track during the crisp winter mornings to maintain peak physical fitness allowing them to compete in the fast-paced tournament matches that run each week January through March. 24

Although Eldorado Polo Club offers world-class levels of competition featuring many top international players, there are also Amateur Leagues as well as the Polo and Riding Academy for those looking to take up the sport. Many players have been known to take up the sport with no previous riding experience! Attending Sunday Polo has become one of the must-do activities during the desert winter months. Each Sunday, thousands of polo fans pour into Eldorado to feel the rumble of galloping hooves as players reach speeds of more than 35 MPH – all while maintaining control of a little white ball. Polo is, in fact, a contact sport and therefore it is often described as “hockey on horseback.” Players look to score through the goals at each end of the tenacre field. It doesn’t take long for first-time attendees to get wrapped up in the excitement of a match as spectators get up to speed with live play-by-play commentary from resident announcer Tony Gregg. After the match, the players gather at the onsite Cantina Restaurant & Bar which is open to the public for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner. Enjoy one of the most beautiful sunset views in the Desert from the Cantina’s field-side patio and rub shoulders with the players at the Sunday Polo After Party. Attending a polo match is easy and everyone is welcome to attend. Guests can enjoy the Sunday Polo from the sidelines in casual comfort by tailgating. With a few lawn chairs and a picnic, you have your own perfect polo event. If you prefer to enjoy the spectacle of polo in style, a reservation in the Clubhouse may be more to your liking with table service over-looking the main Sunday field. Meet the artist Heath Satow is the artist behind Indio’s newest public sculpture, “Sequitur”. Like most artists, his journey to Indio’s art scene had many stops along the way. Satow’s initial practical world experience ran concurrently with his college education by working at Clearscapes Sculpture Studio in Raleigh, NC during his studies. Immediately upon graduation he was promoted to Studio Director, overseeing design, engineering, budgeting, fabrication, and installation of all projects, including many large-scale public art pieces. After two more years of successfully running the studio, he opened his own sculpture studio in 1993. Since then, his studio has been primarily focused on creating artwork for the public. In his Los Angeles studio, Satow created works for almost twenty years while also sitting on the community board of LA’s famous Arts District (Los Angeles River Artists & Business Association). In 2018, he moved his practice to beautiful Ogden, UT where he continues to create large scale public art and has become involved in the creation of a local creative district. What inspires his art?
Inspired early in his career by Martin Puryear and Anish Kapoor, Satow is keenly in touch with the skill of craftsmanship and a singularity of materials that creates a focus on form, the importance of the object itself outside of any narrative. Satow works primarily with metals that offer a visual variety. As natural light changes, as the colors of the seasons change, even as people’s fashion changes; all these permutations are literally reflected in the work – a visual micro-anthropologic summary of the immediate area. His sculptures are never quite the same from moment to moment. The facets of the sculptural surfaces pull apart our visual surroundings, distort and reorder them in unexpected ways, creating a new interpretation of the world we usually tune out and take for granted. His intention with this work is to tune us back in.
