Welcome to the City of Festivals!
Indio is the 30th fastest growing city in America. As the original Coachella Valley city known as the “Hub of the Valley,” we are continuing our legacy as the center of housing, commerce and development in the region.
Nearly 1.4 million people visit our community every year to attend the most famous music, food, and arts festivals in the world. Popular travel site, Trivago, named Indio as a rising global destination and Matador Network ranked Indio as the No. 1 City in the Nation for Live Music. We host the Coachella Valley and Arts Festival, Indio Southwest Arts Festival, Stagecoach Country Music Festival, Indio International Tamale Festival, Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival, and California BBQ State Championship. Once a Union Pacific Railroad depot, the city of Indio continues to be a destination spot with a small-town feel. We take priority in preserving our local heritage, celebrating our diversity, and showcasing our art. The Coachella Valley History Museum contains the original 1909 School House, Date Museum, and the refurbished M. H. Whittier Ranch Water Tower. You can see our great murals and sculptures throughout our downtown, which celebrates our history and spirit of community. See amazing artwork at the Coachella Valley Art Center and watch spectacular musicals and shows at the Indio Performing Arts Center – both of which are also located in downtown Indio. Ranked as one of the Top 20 Best Cities for Young Families in California by Nerdwallet.com, almost 90,000 people call Indio home, and we expect to reach 100,000 in population by 2020 and 135,000 by 2035. More than 3,500 new housing units are under construction or being planned in the next few years to accommodate this growth, and we project adding 54,000 residential units by 2035. Families are moving here because of our parks, schools, and outstanding public safety services. In fact, the Indio Police Department was recognized as one of fifteen cities in the nation to serve as a model for the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. Our restaurant, retail, hotel, and healthcare service sectors are also growing. A Walmart Neighborhood Market and a farm-to-table restaurant called Heirloom Craft Kitchen opened in 2018. In addition, a new 12-screen movie theater is coming and there are new plans proposed at the former Indio Fashion Mall site – now known as Indio Grand Marketplace. To accommodate millions of visitors to our city, a new Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott will be opening and a Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton just broke ground. I am also excited to welcome Loma Linda University Children’s Health Clinic to our downtown area, which is now open to serve over 135,000 children in the region. There are major infrastructure developments recently completed or planned to keep up with our growth. The new I-10 Jefferson Street interchange is now open and a Highway 111 widening and beautification project is underway to give our residents and visitors easier and safer access to our city. The city is working with the Coachella Valley Association of Governments to finalize the route in our community for the CV Link, which is a $76 million multi-modal transportation project using the existing Whitewater River Channel that will span more than 50 miles to connect all nine cities and three tribal governments. The path, which allows pedestrians, bicyclists and low-speed electric vehicles, will create a sustainable future and provide significant economic impacts. To further promote a healthy and active lifestyle, a new five-mile hiking trail in north Indio is scheduled to open in the spring with amazing views of the city, Indio Hills, and Joshua Tree National Park. The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians is a federally recognized Indian tribe with approximately 1,610 acres of reservation land in the Coachella Valley. Several parks and preserves can be founded throughout the valley to admire and learn from. DESERT ADVENTURES Desert Adventures has been entertaining visitors and locals for over 25 years. Their signature tour is the worldfamous San Andreas Fault Tour, which is three hours long. They will take you to a private Metate Ranch, where you will enter into the fault zone and see a twisted and tortured landscape unlike any other in our desert. Along the way, you will visit a natural palm oasis, a recreated Cahuilla Indian Village, and see some spectacular canyons. You will learn about desert plants, animals, Indians, pioneers, geology, and history. They also offer tours to the Indian Canyons in Palm Springs, as well as Painted Canyons in the Mecca Hills. Indian Canyons is home to one of the largest palm oasis in North America. The painted canyons are a geological wonder. You will also have a chance to drive through the valley’s vast agricultural area. Additional tours include the Windmills to Whitewater tour that takes you out to the wind turbines, where you will learn about how they operate and get a look at a couple of solar installations. It is an easy destination for anyone looking to quickly escape the city life and become immersed in unparalleled views and all the outdoor activities available. One of the world’s largest inland seas and lowest spots on earth at -227 below sea level, Salton Sea was recreated in 1905 when high spring flooding on the Colorado River crashed the canal gates leading into the developing Imperial Valley. For the next 18 months, the entire volume of the Colorado River rushed downward into the Salton Trough. By the time engineers were finally able to stop the breaching water in 1907, the Salton Sea had been born at 45-miles long and 20-miles wide – equaling about 130 miles of shoreline. Salton Sea State Recreation Area covers 14 miles of the northeastern shore and has long been a popular site for campers, boaters and anglers. Varner Harbor within the SRA provides easy access to the sea for boating and water skiing. LIFE IN AN INDIAN VILLAGE CIRCA 1700 MARYANN’S BAKERY Nestled among the architecture of Old Town Indio and adorning the walls along the historic Route 99 corridor, you will find some of Indio’s grandest expressions of art and culture. The Indio Mural Project was originally launched by the Chamber of Commerce, an effort to highlight the unique downtown district. Since then, the program has evolved into an expression of the history of Indio, an ongoing conversation of culture played out on giant concrete canvases. The Indio Mural Project chronicles the Coachella Valley’s path to prosperity and growth, journeying from the early times of our indigenous native people, to the modern evolution of technology and mass transit. The murals are a must-see attraction for visitors in the city. The City of Indio kicks off the holiday season with a tree lighting ceremony. Located between City Hall and the Indio Public Library, come light the giant Christmas tree. There will be carolers from local schools, holiday story time, and of course, a visit from Santa! Admission is free.

KENNEL CLUB OF PALM SPRINGS DOG SHOW The Kennel Club of Palm Springs annually hosts one of the most prestigious dog shows in the world and is considered the opening event of the dog show year in the west coast. RIVERSIDE COUNTY FAIR & NATIONAL DATE FESTIVAL IN INDIO The Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival started as a festival to celebrate the end of the annual date harvest in the desert region, the major commercial date-producing area in the Western Hemisphere. With the popularity of the date gardens, the idea was planted for the first Date Festival in 1921 to be held in Indio’s city park. In 1940, Riverside County purchased the present fairgrounds it now calls home. A testament to its roots, Indio remains synonymous with the date industry. Dates have been a staple food of the Middle East for thousands of years. Dating back to as early as 4,000 BC, dates have found a home in the dry climate and ample sunshine of the Coachella Valley. Indio hosts one of the region’s most famous date gardens – Shields Date Garden. Floyd and Bess Shields came to the California
Desert in 1924 and started Shields Date Garden, working long and hard to build up their business and educate their customers about date culture. In the beginning, Mr. Shields would give his lectures in the garden. As the popularity of his lectures grew, he incorporated a slide show, then recorded his presentation in conjunction with the slide show so that the show could be run several times a day. Today, the 15-minute film “Romance and Sex Life of the Date” runs continuously during store hours, where you can still hear Mr. Shields talking about his favorite subject, the date. Complete with a café, retail store and walking garden, Shields is one of the Coachella Valley’s top tourist destinations.

A museum dedicated the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians, located on the grounds of Fantasy Springs Resort Cason, gives visitors a chance to “walk in the footsteps of the ancient Cahuilla people.” It features artifact displays, hands-on exhibits, and interpretive scenes of the Native Americans who originally inhabited the Coachella Valley. ach November, large trucks and trailers carrying superb equine athletes from across the US descend upon Indio to compete in some of the most exciting and competitive polo in the country. A great sense of community fills the air at Eldorado as the club becomes home to more than 500 horses preparing for competition. In the crisp early hours of

the morning, the mile-long track is packed with groups of horses trotting to reach peak physical fitness for tournament matches taking place January through March. The club boasts more than ten regulation grass fields, a stick and ball field, practice hitting cage, exercise track, and onsite stabling making it one of the largest polo clubs in the country. Eldorado Polo Club offers varying levels of competition for players of all abilities. The peak levels of competition feature many top international players. There is also the Pro Pool amateur league as well as the Polo and Riding Academy for those looking to take up the sport. Many players have been known to take up the sport with no previous riding experience! Attending polo as a spectator has become synonymous with the desert winter lifestyle. Each Sunday, thousands of polo fans pour into Eldorado to feel the rumble of
galloping hooves as players reach speeds of more than 35 MPH – all while maintaining control of a little white ball. Polo is, in fact, a contact sport and therefore it is often described as “hockey on horseback.” Players look to score through the uprights at each end of the ten-acre field. It doesn’t take long for first-time attendees to get wrapped up in the excitement of a match as spectators get up to speed with live play-by-play commentary from resident announcer Tony Gregg. Attending a polo match is easy and everyone is welcome to attend. Guests can enjoy the polo sidelines in casual comfort by tailgating. With a few lawn chairs and a picnic, you have your own perfect polo event. If you prefer to enjoy the spectacle of polo in style, a reservation in the Clubhouse may be more to your liking. Overlooking the main field, guests may enjoy a full-service restaurant and bar, with seating available for parties from two to 100+. The venue is also offered for special events.

I
n 1991 Microsoft released Dos 5.0, Terminator 2: Judgment Day was a box office hit, and Natalie Cole won a Grammy for Unforgettable. Little did foodies know that in 1991 Brandon, Nathan and Melina, “The Kids,” were going to satisfy our growling stomachs and #foodgram posts for years to come. That same year The Kid’s Business, better known as TKB, started when the three siblings took their mom Athena’s unforgettable recipes and went house-to-house with friends in the neighborhood selling a healthier alternative to storebought cookie dough. What started as a side project to help The Kids raise money to buy Christmas presents quickly grew into more. With the popularity of their cookies, the business grew and they eventually became a wholesale supplier for retailers across the country. TKB supplies three major grocery store chains and operate their own production facility located on Golf Center Parkway in Indio California. From the cookie business they expanded and opened the retail side by sandwiching cheeses, spreads, and meats between layers of fresh bread. Bam! A deli and local favorite came to be. Almost 30 years later, The Kids have grown the family cookie-dough company into one of the most successful delis in America.

Let’s be honest, the sandwich might be the perfect food. Quick to make, portable, can range in size from small to giant, and can be as simple or as elaborate as the stomach desires. So what makes TKB Deli & Bakery so unique? The fabulous food, atmosphere and family environment (some fun banter included) are something everyone should experience. In 2014, they received a well-deserved accreditation from Yelp.com: #4 Rated Restaurant in America. One year later on January 22, 2015 they learned that TKB Bakery & Deli was fourth on Yelp’s Top 100 Places To Eat Before You Die list. It was only a short time prior to receiving these accolades that Melina even started paying attention to Yelp. “I started seeing all these people come into the business—people who weren’t from Indio. It’s not that hard to tell. So we started asking them, ‘How did you hear about us?’ Time and time again they said ‘Yelp.’” That is when she started paying attention and seemingly overnight, the deli transformed from a local eatery to a nationally recognized culinary hotspot. Every sandwich they make, how they train staff, and the way they speak to customers—having five stars on Yelp became central to their business. However, long before Yelp was the place to find amazing dining spots, they made sure the customer was central to their business. They set up our deli in a way that no employee ever has their back to our customers. The customer is the focus. They watch everything we do. When they first opened the production facility in 2001, the deli side accounted for about half of the business… now the deli does five times as much business as the wholesale side. The cookies are amazing and worth the buy if you find them in your store, but have you checked out the deli menu? Look for the asterisk* to find the
best selling sammies, like The Trump, Pesto Chicken Ranch Club, and the Chicken Chipotle—which has just the right amount of spice. loyd and Bess Shields came to the California desert in 1924 and started Shields Date Garden, working long and hard to build up their business and educate their customers about date culture. Today, a 15-minute film, Romance and Sex Life of the Date, shows continuously during store hours, where you can still hear Mr. Shields talking about his favorite subject: the Date. In 2011, William and Lillian Vanderzalm contacted Shields Date Gardens with a wonderful opportunity. The
Vanderzalm’s owned a biblical garden in Vancouver, Canada. They had recently sold the property and were looking to relocate the statues to the Palm Springs area. Shield’s horticulture and landscape team then began construction. The Garden was open on a limited basis October 2012 and fully completed October 2013. The garden path winds through their 17-acre date farm. It depicts 14 scenes and includes 23 statues that chronologies Christ’s life. The Date Gardens also feature an outdoor cafe offering breakfast and lunch, specializing in traditional American and Mexican dishes, as well as new twists on old favorites. Guests can expect to find a variety of delicious items including signature salads topped with homemade dressings, sandwiches served on homemade bread, and authentic Mexican cuisine. They understand the importance of serving fresh, high-quality food.
The majority of The Cafe's seating is on the outdoor patio boasting fresh white umbrellas, ivory linen covered tables, our rose garden, date palms and mountain views - all creating an experience that feels like a vacation right here at home. COACHELLA VALLEY HISTORY MUSEUM In the heart of Downtown Indio, you will find a group of volunteers that take preserving the Coachella Valley’s history very seriously. Since 1965, The Coachella Valley History Museum (CVHM) and its army of volunteers has worked hard to collect and maintain that history for all to see.
CVHM IS ON THE MOVE
A
historic campus, which contains the 1926 adobe Smiley-Tyler House, the historic 1909 Indio Schoolhouse, and the world’s only Date Museum, the history isn’t just on the walls, it’s in them. Other highlights include their Desert Submarine, a Blacksmith's shop, pioneer farming implements and the archives for the Historical Society. Also, the spacious grounds hold a variety of gardens which include a Memorial Date Garden, Japanese Garden, the Geissler Rose Garden, the Jardin del Desierto (Desert Garden) and the Liberty Tree - the oldest Cork Tree in the Coachella Valley. “The valley has such rich history,” says Rebecca Rizzo, a member of the CVHM Board of Trustees. “We want to be able to do more than just tell
future generations about it, we want them to be able to see and experience it.” During the last year, the museum has continued to improve. Thanks to a CCHE grant, Goldenvoice, The GFWC-Woman's Club of Indio, the City of Indio and many supporters, donors and volunteers the museum has embarked on a $150,000 campus improvement project. The project will be completed by the end of 2018 and it will include bringing their public bathrooms into ADA compliance. They are creating a beautiful venue for both public and private events where they can share their amazing museum with the entire valley. In this way, the museum hopes to continue to be a part of everyone's history. Their gardens, nostalgic buildings, and beautiful outdoor lighting will make your special day even more magical. EXPLORE HISTORIC INDIO Indio’s rich background provides many unique, significant locations to explore to discover and learn more about the city’s unique history. SMILEY-TYLER HOUSE The "Smiley Place" was the private residence of Doctor and Mrs. Smiley which also housed his medical practice. Visit this historical location to learn their amazing story and how the Smiley-Tyler families enriched the history of this historical property. THE CALIFORNIA DATE HISTORY MUSEUM The date palm is one of civilization's oldest cultivated crop. The people of Egypt, Babylonia and Arabia have cultivated the plant for over 5,000 years. From the introduction of the date palm to the Coachella Valley in 1900, this exhibit explores the history of this industry from its Middle Eastern origins, to the horticulturists who brought the date successfully to California and the essential workers who harvested this fruit of the desert. Just outside the Museum, a working date grove features the variety of dates produced in the Coachella Valley. 1909 INDIO SCHOOLHOUSE The 1909 Indio Schoolhouse, Indio's third school, was built with the help of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Its craftsmanship resembles many of the early train depots. This gem was originally located on Oasis and Bliss Avenue then transferred to the old Roosevelt School grounds and finally relocated to the Museum campus in 1999. This is definitely a trip back in time! PIONEER HALL Hosting the rotating artwork of local artist each month, Pioneer Hall was renovated in 2012 with the help of the Indio Sunrise Rotary Club and the Woman's Club of Indio, to showcase the talents of local artists. THE OUTDOOR GALLERY Available land and water brought people to the Coachella Valley to grow fruits, vegetables and hay over 100 years ago before there were any automobiles or air conditioners. Paying homage to the pioneers, cultivators, railroad workers and blacksmiths, this array of tools, structures and equipment are on display to give a sense of how this valley was being transformed to pave the way for the 21st century. THE GARDENS The Gardens of the Museum offer a variety of plant species that thrive in the desert.
