CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE By: Jeff Fishbein Chairman of the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce
As we dive headfirst into the tinsel-infused chaos that is December, I’m here with a festive message that’s chock-full of holiday cheer and a sprinkle of good-natured humor. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and by “it,” I mean the season of office parties, ugly sweaters, and enough cookies to last us until next December. Now, December isn’t just about counting down the days until you can binge-watch holiday movies in your comfiest PJs (although that’s definitely on the agenda). It’s also the perfect time to show some love to our local businesses. Forget the big-box stores – this year, let’s make it our mission to shop so local that we accidentally run into our neighbors in the checkout line. And speaking of neighbors, mark your calendars because the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce is throwing a holiday bash that will rival even the most extravagant North Pole shindigs. Picture this: twinkling lights, cheesy holiday sweaters (the cheesier, the better), and enough laughter to make Santa’s belly jealous. It’s going to be the talk of the town, and you won’t want to miss it. It is happening December 7th at the Old Town Artisan Studios. Now, looking ahead to 2024, we’ve got big plans. We’re talking world domination... or at least La Quinta domination. The Chamber is cooking up some spicy new initiatives, events that will make you say, “I can’t believe they pulled that off,” and resources that will have you wondering how you ever survived without them. Get ready for a year so epic, it’ll make 2023 look like a warm-up act. It all starts with our Annual Car Show on February 24th at the La Quinta Community Park. In conclusion, my fellow La Quinta enthusiasts, let’s sleigh this December together. May your days be merry, your cocoa be extra chocolatey, and your New Year’s resolutions be as achievable as a second helping of grandma’s famous stuffing. Cheers to you, to us, and to a December filled with laughter, joy, and enough holiday spirit to power Rudolph’s red nose for a lifetime. Jeff Fishbein is a realtor with the desert’s leading Coldwell Banker Realty. Jeff has tremendous success in helping home sellers and buyers, with a 5-star rating on Zillow.com.

La Quinta Hotel Tour
GCVCC Holiday Mixer
Hazardous Waste Collection Event
The La Quinta Historical Society will present its annual La Quinta Hotel Tour and Luncheon, which has been a holiday favorite for many years.
Get in on some festive fun at the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Holiday Mixer at Old Town Artisan Studios on Thursday, December 7, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
While you’re filling up your garage with boxes full of holiday decorations, you may come across some hazardous waste items that you’ve been meaning to dispose of.
Organized by the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce Board, guests are encouraged to get into the holiday spirit and wear their best ugly sweater. The evening will be filled with holiday activities including an ugly sweater contest, food, networking, games, raffles and more.
To help you clear out those items, Riverside County is conducting a Household Hazardous Waste Event in the south parking lot of City Hall on December 16, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
It will be held Saturday, December 9, from 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. The member cost is $60 ($70 for nonmembers). The 1400-acre federal land patent was granted to Walter Morgan in 1921. He hired architect Gordon Kaufmann in 1925 to design the hotel, and after its construction, it opened in 1926. Barbara Irwin, a La Quinta Historical Society past president, created this tour to pay homage to this historic and picturesque resort and to honor legendary film director, Frank Capra – one of La Quinta’s most celebrated residents. The tour features two distinguished guides – former La Quinta Resort manager, Judy Vossler and her daughter, Lisa Vossler Smith. For Tickets: LaQuintaHistoricalSociety.com
While you’re there, you’ll have the opportunity to check out the fully-decked halls at Old Town Artisan Studios – which has been transformed for its annual Gingerbread Lane events. Mix and mingle while being surrounded by thousands of twinkling lights and other holiday décor. Old Town Artisan Studios is located at 78046 Calle Barcelona in La Quinta. To Register for this Free Event: GCVCC.org
Bring hazardous waste items such as used oil and filters, gasoline/diesel/antifreeze/ brake fluid, paint, fluorescent tubes/bulbs, pesticides, garden chemicals, household cleaners, aerosol cans, propane, auto and household batteries, pool chlorine, electronic devices including TVs and computers, and unused medication (except controlled substances). It’s important to bring your hazardous waste to collection events like this because dangerous chemicals and toxins can enter and contaminate groundwater supplies if discarded in your regular trash service, causing illness and harming wildlife. More info: RCwaste.org/hhw 5
‘ Tis the Season to be Merry & Bright in La Quinta La Quinta Civic Center Campus One of the most magical places in La Quinta during the holidays is the La Quinta Civic Center Campus. Aside from a grand lit tree, stroll the park to enjoy colorful lights adorning the gazebo, palm trees and the bridge over the waterfall that flows into the lake, as well as lots of fun holiday decorations.

Historic Casita
LIGHTS UP LA QUINTA
for the Holidays
By: Sherry Barkas, City of La Quinta The holidays are here, and the lights on the historic casita on the southwest corner of Avenida Montezuma and Avenida Mendoza are on. Every year, when the holiday lights go on, it symbolizes the holiday season while illuminating a significant piece of La Quinta’s past. This year, the neighboring lumberyard building that ties into La Quinta’s early history is also aglow. The switch was flipped November 30 during a ceremony that included music and refreshments, and it will continue to be lit every night through the holidays. The casita was built in 1935 and is a remaining link between the Desert Club and the first homes built in the Cove – both products of developer E.S. Harry Kiener, who had purchased several thousand acres of land in the area in the early 1930s.
8
Building on a Vision La Quinta Milling and Lumber Co. was started in the 1930s by Guy Maltby to supply the building materials needed for the Desert Club and the Spanishstyle casitas for a subdivision Kiener had planned in the cove, called Santa Carmelita de Vale and marketed as Vale La Quinta. The casita was built as office space for the real estate company selling the homes and is historically known as the Palm Springs Land and Irrigation Sales Office. Kiener’s Desert Club opened Thanksgiving Day in 1937 at what is today Fritz Burns Park, and it quickly became a community hotspot with a swimming pool, restaurant, and other amenities that drew Hollywood celebrities and a venue where Kiener promoted his casitas. The lumber company offices were on the ground floor of the two-story Spanish-style building at 77895 Avenida Montezuma, and the lumberyard was behind the building. The second-floor apartment was home to Maltby and his family and then to Desert Club contractor Miles Reed Scott, his wife, and two children. “I have only fleeting impressions of my early life there, but I recall the steep stairway up the side, the balcony, the doorways that were arches, green linoleum in the kitchen, and a large Fremont Cottonwood tree that stood at the northeast front corner,” Julie Hirsch wrote in “Remembering The Desert Club,” a small book published by the La Quinta Historical Society in 1995. Construction and tourism suffered when the U.S. entered World War II following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Lumber was scarce, doubling and tripling the cost of building the casitas and delaying the construction of the homes. The delays and cost overruns panicked buyers, and Kiener’s project, which saw about 50 casitas completed, did not survive the economic impact. The lumberyard building has been home to various businesses, including a general store and post office in the 1940s and a veterinarian’s office. The building was vacant when purchased by the City in 2018 with a vision for a Cultural Campus, making the lumberyard an extension of the Museum and casita.
Planning a Cultural Campus The casita has also gone through various uses over the years. In the 1970s, it housed the Frances Hack Real Estate Company. From 1994 to 2007, the La Quinta Historical Society occupied the building. Then, in 2008, the La Quinta Museum was built around the casita, which is today used as office space for the Museum and Historical Society staff, and serves as an archive for historical data and artifacts. The Spanish Colonial-style casita has maintained its original exterior with its red Mission tile roof, overhanging eaves,
an arched double-door opening, Spanish tiles, and decorative wrought iron grilles around the windows and doors. Inside, brass doorknobs, a chandelier, and a stained glass window are among the symbols of the building’s past. Check out the lights at the casita and lumberyard every night during the holidays and visit the La Quinta Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday to learn more about the City’s early years. Mimi & Rae
Mother/Daughter Team Opens New Location in La Quinta Mimi & Rae is a unique boutique which recently opened its doors in La Quinta. The owners are a mother/daughter team – Mimi and Raechel Lawhon – who brought their second location to Old Town La Quinta following the success of their first shop in Laguna Beach. The pair didn’t just want their new store to be a retail venture, but to reflect their shared values — sustainability, sophistication, and style with a big punch of fun and camaraderie. “This location is very close to our hearts because we were able to build it from the ground up,” said Mimi Lawhon. “It is 100% the Mimi & Rae vision without limitations.” With a surge in popularity, Mimi & Rae’s beach-inspired boutique has become a hot spot for tourists looking to bring home a taste of made-in-California coastal fashion. Fueled by this demand, the decision to expand their presence to the Coachella Valley was a natural progression. “We set out to craft a boutique with old fashioned hospitality and modern styles, creating a balance between attainable and sustainability,” explained Lawhon. 14
Mimi & Rae features west coast minimalist chic women’s clothing and accessories from small batch, women-owned lines handmade. A unique sanctuary of style, Mimi & Rae exudes a feeling of joyful calm – reflecting the colors of the desert and coasts of California.
“We want you to feel good about what you wear – from our soft, cozy, handcurated fabrics to our careful selection of each brand. Nothing makes our day better than making you happy.” According to Lawhon, people are turning to small boutiques for fun, inexpensive, quality clothing made in small batches that are also sustainably, ethically and locally made. “Well known in the past for being expensive store fronts for budding designers, most boutiques are not that at all anymore,” she added.
Nestled in the heart of Old Town La Quinta, this boutique is a fusion of classic west coast vibes and contemporary minimalism. A couple of their favorite lines so far are No Less Than LA and If She Loves, and they are always looking to grow their unique sources. The beauty of their collections lies in their roots. Many of the lines Mimi & Rae carries are designed and even made in Los Angeles, and each piece is dedicated to craftsmanship and quality, providing customers authentic options. Mimi & Rae is located at 78010 Main Street, Suite 101, in La Quinta, and is open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and Sundays 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

SIGNS THAT YOUR CHILD IS Mathnasium Owners Make Math Fun FIVE STRUGGLING WITH MATH Kids fall behind in math because they in their La Quinta Learning Center Mathnasium of La Quinta is now open for business, bringing fun and effective supplementary math programs for community children in grades 2 through 12. The franchise was brought to La Quinta by Ron and Sandra Indech. The learning center, located at Washington Park Shopping Center in La Quinta, focuses solely on math and operates on the core belief that virtually any child can excel in the subject. The Mathnasium Method™, implemented at more than 900 Mathnasium centers in the U.S. and abroad, is a unique program that provides each child with a customized learning plan and personalized instruction in a way that makes sense to them. “Our students will receive the fundamental practice they need to master number facts and build an intuitive understanding of how numbers work,” said Ron Indech, owner of the Mathnasium of La Quinta franchise. “Our goal is simple: to teach math in a way that makes sense to kids. We are thrilled to be able to share the Mathnasium Method™ to support the families of the Coachella Valley.”
16
Parents are also thrilled. “Our 8-year-old loves coming to Mathnasium, and even asked if she could go every day – that’s a great feeling for us parents,” said Sarye Smith. “Ron, the owner and his team of teachers are personable, engaging and ready to help kids learn how to problem solve mathematics.” The Mathnasium experience begins with an assessment designed to pinpoint a child’s strengths and weaknesses. These results provide the foundation from which Mathnasium constructs the student’s customized learning plan. Students are taught by caring and knowledgeable instructors using the Mathnasium Method™ – a unique combination of mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques to help children really understand math. “As educators, we strive to offer Coachella Valley students a balanced math learning experience: one that fills in the gaps, keeps students on track with math taught in school, and, most importantly, makes learning math a fun and joyful experience,” Indech concluded.
lack the necessary prerequisite math skills. Below are five signs that suggest a child is struggling:
• Math grades are lagging, but student has good grades in other subjects. • Student makes comments like ‘’I’m no good at math.” • Missing key milestones: addition/ subtraction by 2nd grade; multiplication/division by 4th grade; fractions by 6th grade. • Physical signs like counting on fingers suggest poor retention of number facts. • Comments from the child’s teacher about “not working up to his or her full potential.” If a child shows any of these signs, there are several things parents can do: • Seek help from the student’s teacher. • Help the child more closely with homework. • Enroll in an after-school math program like Mathnasium.

Invigorate Your Imagination at La Quinta’s
Creation Station
By: Sherry Barkas, City of La Quinta There is a place in La Quinta where creativity and imagination are encouraged and nourished, and creators of all ages can find the help and technology needed to take their projects to the highest level envisioned. Five years ago, the City of La Quinta opened the Creation Station in partnership with the Riverside County Library System.
The Region’s First MakerSpace It was the Coachella Valley’s first MakerSpace. Since opening, advanced software and printers were added, along with several programs and classes for all ages. “This place is Santa’s workshop … where you can make a little bit of everything. It’s fun to see people learn and that they can have fun doing it,” said MakerSpace supervisor Michele McNeilly. Creation Station is inside the library, at the north end of the building, just beyond the restrooms. McNeilly has headed the program since it opened on July 30, 2018. It is a place where hobbyists and those who want to learn how to use 3D printers and other tools and technology can create items for themselves or as gifts for others at a fee that ranges from $5 to $30, which covers the cost of materials. 18
3D Printing, Sewing, Hand Tools & Beyond The program offers classes and work stations for 3D printing, laser cutting, computer aided design (CAD), electronics components and soldering, sewing, hand tools and more, with the latest technology including a 3D printer that is “top in the world” and can do up to eight colors. “We have the best technology to do 3D printing in the valley,” McNeilly said. McNeilly and Creation Station team members, technicians Will Gillespie and Chuck Mulally, are available to help anyone who comes in and they lead classes for ages 14 and older and monthly camps for younger children 7 to 13. A vacuum forming machine has also been added, which allows users to make “mass amounts of molds for chocolates, candles, soaps. You can also use it for cosplay armor,” McNeilly said.
The resin printer offers high-definition 3D printing that can be used for making a variety of items, including rings and action and mini-figures such as those used in Dungeons and Dragons. “There’s a lot of different uses. You can even use it for prototyping,” she said. “So, it’s a lot of fun new technology that we have.” Among the MakerSpace classes for ages 14 and older: • 3D printing: Classes include basics and applications; materials, machines and post-processing; and SLA (Resin) advanced 3D printing learning how to successfully print time detailed files with an SLA printer. • Sewing: From the basics to buttons, linings and zippers, and embroidery. • Cricut maker: Learn to use Cricut for vinyl and paper cutting for iron-on vinyl, elaborate cards from regular and cardstock paper, and custom stickers. • Vacuum forming: Introduction to mold making.
Themed Maker Craft events are held the first Saturday and third Thursday of the month and are geared to ages 3 to 17. Recent events have included making Super Mario Bros. Mini Pillows, which had the biggest turnout of any Maker Craft event so far and was the first time McNeilly said she ran out of kits. “We had over 70 people show up in our MakerSpace. We had no room. People were on the floor, all hands sewing little pillows. It was amazing,” she said. Another popular event was Tabletop Tavern which allowed participants to make a paper D20 dice, paint a creature mini figure, build a Dungeons & Dragons character or ask local Tabletop Tavern players questions about getting started. MakerSpace Camps, for ages 3 to 17, are held the third Saturday of every month, offering different programs as well. Fiber Arts Bootcamp, held monthly on the last Sunday, is where participants of all ages create something different every month. Classes are added or merged based on input from patrons, McNeilly said.
Medical Ahields and Krabby Patties During the pandemic, McNeilly and her team made 3D face shields for medical staff at the local hospitals. They also got creative with some YouTube videos that included Fiction Kitchen with step-by-step instructions for making popular dishes from books, TV, and movies, including Krabby Patties, which helped keep families busy with creative things to do. Annual memberships are available for ages 14 and older and are $50 per year for hobbyists; $10 per year for students and military with valid ID; and free for educators with a valid educator ID. A calendar of events can be found at PlayInLaQuinta.com/artsculture/creation-station and https://sites.google.com/view/ laquintacreationstation. Non-surgical Hemorrhoid Procedure Available in La Quinta For those who have lived with the discomforts of hemorrhoids, they can be both embarrassing and painful – but they are also very common. The Mayo Clinic reports that hemorrhoids will affect almost three out of four adults in their lifetime. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins which enlarge inside the lower rectum and can cause bleeding, itching, swelling and other unpleasant symptoms. Hemorrhoids can also be external, forming under the skin around the anus. It’s possible to have internal and external hemorrhoids at the same time. Many different factors can contribute to hemorrhoids forming, such as straining during bowel movements. If you’ve tried home remedies or over-the-counter creams and have found no relief, a hemorrhoid banding treatment could be a long-term solution for you with no surgery. Hemorrhoid banding, also called hemorrhoid ligation, is a nonsurgical procedure that can be performed in a doctor’s office. In fact, Desert Care Network’s La Quinta Medical Center Campus – located at 47647 Caleo Drive near Washington Street just south of Avenue 47 – in La Quinta that offers this minimallyinvasive technique. This method involves placing a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid. The rubber band prevents blood flow to the hemorrhoid and causes it to wither and eventually fall off on its own. This procedure is performed in just a few minutes and is an alternative to a hemorrhoidectomy – which can be painful, and may require a hospital stay of 5–10 days and additional recovery time that can range from 2–6 weeks. Dr. Michael Schwartz – who is a board-certified gastroenterologist seeing patients at Desert Care Network’s La Quinta Medical Center Campus – performs the hemorrhoid banding procedure in his La Quinta office. “Hemorrhoid banding is safe and does not involve anesthesia, which means we can do it as an outpatient procedure,” said Dr. Schwartz. “The treatment is quick, and patients experience minimal downtime.”
28
Dr. Schwartz goes on to say that he enjoys being part of the La Quinta practice. “Whether people are working or retired, our patients appreciate good healthcare and the fact that they are able to get into our office easily. We try to work people in the same week they call to make the appointment because otherwise they end up going to the Emergency Room and then still need to follow up with a Gastroenterologist.” “Our La Quinta office is a friendly place from the time the phone is answered to when patients leave our office with their prescription or after care instructions. My motto is to always give compassionate care and be available because we are in the service business which happens to be patient care,” added Dr. Schwartz. With over 28 years of practice experience and more than 20 years in clinical research of gastrointestinal pharmaceuticals, Dr. Schwartz was a principal investigator for many of the gastrointestinal drugs on the market today. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Schwartz to find out if hemorrhoid banding is an option for you, call (760) 771-1000.
