MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON Submitted by: Eric Mosser, La Quinta Chamber of Commerce Chair

Have you seen or heard any of the recent “Shop Local” ads put out by the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce? They are doing a great job of sharing this message on radio ads and social media posts. If you’d like to share your efforts to shop locally, use #cvshoplocal on your social media posts. The Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce has been working hard for our community, and we are looking forward to the year ahead. Best of luck with your New Year’s Resolutions! LY My second New Year’s Resolution is to share the benefits of shopping local with everyone in La Quinta. Perhaps I’m biting off more than I can chew, but for the past year I’ve been thinking a lot about how consciously shopping locally benefits our city. As mentioned in my last article as many as $68 of every $100 spent in La Quinta stays in La Quinta, and a portion of those dollars are improving the health and wealth of our city. I love our city, and I can only imagine how much better it could be if we each did our part to consciously choose to shop local, eat local, and obtain our services from local vendors.

How are your New Year’s Resolutions holding up? Seems like the most common resolutions I make every year are health and wealth focused. Year after year I’m looking to exercise more, lose weight, spend less, improve my diet, and so on. This year I’ve got two resolutions. The first is something similar to years past. Specifically, I’m avoiding processed food for the month of January. I’m giving myself a boost of health, by eliminating processed foods, with an on-going plan to marginally reduce my processed food intake.

THE COACHELLA VALLEY’S ONLY PGA TOUR EVENT RETURNS TO LA QUINTA JANUARY 19-23 Submitted by: GCVCC Staff The 2022 American Express™ – the only PGA TOUR event featured in this region of Southern California – will return to La Quinta January 19-23, welcoming tournament host and World Hall of Famer, Phil Mickelson, among 156 professionals and 156 amateur golfers playing at PGA WEST’s Stadium Course and Nicklaus Tournament Course, and La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta. The American Express is the first PGA TOUR regular season event in the continental U.S. each year, and kicks off the TOUR’s West Coast swing. As part of this year’s tournament, the American Express has also announced that iconic Los Angeles pop rock band, Maroon 5, and heralded American country musician and songwriter, Brad Paisley, will comprise the musical lineup for its 2022 Concert Series – which is held following golf play on January 21 and 22 on the PGA WEST Stadium Course driving range. The tournament’s Concert Series returns for its fifth year (since 2017) and enhances the overall tournamentweek fan experience by packaging popular musical entertainment with great local food and many of the world’s best golfers to create a festival-style atmosphere. All ticket options for the 2022 American Express are currently on sale at the tournament’s official website, TheAMEXgolf.com. Grounds tickets for Friday’s second round and Saturday’s third round are $125 for each day, and include admission to the golf tournament and postround concert.

8

An upgraded ‘Champions Club’ ticket for the concert days – which entitles patrons to experience the PGA TOUR golf action while enjoying a hosted breakfast, lunch, snack and full bar in the Champions Club, preferred parking and exclusive concert viewing access near the stage – is $350 for each day. All ticket holders have access to Casamigos Club 18’s open-air venue located on the 18th green, where they can sip Casamigos cocktails, enjoy lunch and watch some of the world’s best players from some spectacular seats. Another fan experience of note is that all ticket holders have access to the Michelob Ultra Beers Fore Birdies venue located on one of the most iconic holes played during the PGA TOUR season – the par-3 17th on the Pete Dye Stadium course known as ‘Alcatraz.’ Aside from the amazing views – any time a pro birdies, beers are discounted. In accordance with the tournament’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols, it is anticipated that all spectators of The American Express are to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, or proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of one’s entry into the tournament. More detailed information will be provided closer to the tournament. Since its inception in 1960 as the Palm Springs Golf Classic, Riverside County’s PGA TOUR event has generated over $63 million for non-profit organizations dedicated to supporting Coachella Valley residents. For tickets, safety updates and other information, go to TheAMEXgolf.com.

LA QUINTA COUNTRY CLUB, 50 YEARS OF TOURNAMENT PLAY Submitted by: GCVCC Staff Every year, we welcome thousands into La Quinta, our Gem of the Desert, to experience world class golf. One of the courses the American Express plays on is at La Quinta Country Club, where this year, we celebrate 50 years of tournament play. We had a chance to talk with Kurt Burmeister, General Manager and COO at La Quinta Country Club, as well as his staff, to learn more about what makes this piece of golf paradise so special. Let’s look at some defining moments and a bit of history of golf at La Quinta Country Club. In 1958, Roy Crummer, Col. Courtney Turner, John Elsbach, and Chicago Attorney Leonard Ettelson purchased the La Quinta Hotel and 1,000 acres of land around it. They set aside 130 acres of that land and created what they said would be “A country club that will be unequaled in the Coachella Valley.” The course was designed by architect Lawrence M. Hughes featuring tree-lined fairways, lakes, bunkers and gently rolling terrain. When it first opened, you could play 7,200 yards with holes as long as 535 yards and some as short as 160 yards. On Saturday, November 15th, 1959 the new 18-hole championship golf course was opened for play at the La Quinta Hotel. Twenty-eight Charter Members, political representatives and entertainers attended the opening ceremony. The first round was played by none other than Bing Crosby, Phil Harris, Ed Crowley, John Raitt, Randolph Scott, and a comedian named Bob Hope. A year later on October 23, 1960, sitting President of the United State of America, Dwight D. Eisenhower, flew in on Marin One and dedicated La Quinta Country Club. He was the first President to tee it up at the Bob Hope Classic. The fairways of La Quinta Country Club have been a virtual walk of fame. The elite of Hollywood, Presidents,

10

Monarchs, and the King – Arnold Palmer - have matched their wits and talents with these famous 18 holes. One of the most memorable events happened during this tournament in 2017 when little known Saskatchewan, Canada native Adam Hadwin shot 59 in the third round of The American Express at La Quinta Country Club. This score matched the tournament record set by David Duval in the 1999 event at PGA West’s Arnold Palmer Private course. Adam earned a rare place in history for both himself and the La Quinta Country Club when he became only the fourth PGA Tour player ever to shoot 59 on a par-72 golf course, setting a new course record for the legendary Club. His performance included 13 birdies and no bogeys, but Hadwin needed to scramble for par at La Quinta’s tough 412-yard 18th in order to secure this epic milestone. “As this is my first season at La Quinta Country Club, I feel very fortunate to be part of the tournament. Having grown up less than an hour away, I ventured to the desert many times to experience the tournament firsthand. The longevity of this tournament is unique for the PGA Tour. The local charitable impact this tournament provides is astonishing. The fact that La Quinta Country Club will celebrate 50 years as being a tournament course is humbling. Many celebrity and golf greats have walked these fairways and putted these greens. This will be a very special milestone for LQCC and its members!”, said General Manager and COO Kurt Burmeister. “I would like to thank LQCC’s 20-year Golf Course Superintendent Tim Putnam for his commitment to superior playing conditions. LQCC has the reputation of always being in excellent shape. Due to excellent Fall growing conditions, this year will be no exception. If the weather cooperates, you can expect some low scores from these elite players.” Learn more about La Quinta Country Club at lqcc.org.

RANDY DUNCAN, A STAPLE OF LA QUINTA GOLF Submitted by: GCVCC Staff January in La Quinta is synonymous with golf. We find our ways onto the courses and get a chance to experience world class golf and views. Many who golf in La Quinta will know Randy Duncan, PGA who is the General Manager at SilverRock Resort. Spending the past 17 years working at SilverRock Resort, Randy has become a staple of the community. We had a chance to talk to Randy a bit about himself, golf and what makes him love La Quinta. Can you let us know a little bit about yourself? I am the youngest of five kids. I was born in Cincinnati Ohio, moved to Dallas, Texas when I was 9, then our family moved to Northern California when I was 12. I attended San Diego State University and graduated in 1992 with a BA in Finance and have lived in the Coachella Valley since 1992. I am the proud father of 2 children, both of whom attended La Quinta High School. My eldest son, Paden Duncan, is in his senior year at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and recently commissioned to be a Navy Pilot. My youngest daughter Ella Duncan is a senior at La Quinta High School and is currently applying for colleges. I love adventures and the outdoors including hiking, mountain biking, off-road & on road motorcycles, fishing, swimming, tennis, triathlons, and pickle ball. I also recently competed in the 2019 Ironman La Quinta/Indian Wells. Can you let us know about your history with golf? I always played team sports growing up as a kid but discovered golf in high school. I instantly fell in love with golf partly because of the individuality of the sport and all that golf offers, and partly because our home course in high school was Pebble Beach Golf Links. Getting to play golf courses like Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, and Cypress Point in high school was an easy way to fall in love with golf. After high school, I went on to play D1 Golf at San Diego State University. After graduation, I moved to the Coachella Valley in 1992 to pursue a career playing golf professionally. I got a job working at the

Mountain/Dunes Course at La Quinta Hotel, really for golf privileges and to have a place to work on my game. Unfortunately, I quickly realized how hard it was to play golf for a living and decided the professional golfer path was not going to work out for me. Fortunately, I found working at a golf course was really fun. I had a great experience working at La Quinta Hotel and for Landmark Golf (the Vossler Family) and decided to focus on a career in the golf business as a golf professional. I became the Head Pro at the Mountain/Dunes Course at the age of 26 and went on to work at the Westin Mission Hills and Heritage Palms. I was offered the General Manager’s Position at SilverRock in the summer of 2004 and have been a member of the PGA of America for 25 years. What do you like about working at SilverRock? After 17 years, I still feel so very fortunate to come to work every day and call SilverRock my office. Besides having the best office in the Coachella Valley, I really enjoy wearing so many different hats daily. One day I am touring the golf course with my superintendent talking about agronomy practices, the next day I’m working with our Chef on Menus and the next I’m working on revenue management with our controller. It has been extremely rewarding and exciting to see SilverRock evolve and grow over the years. Now that construction is well underway for 2 luxury hotels, a permanent clubhouse, conference center and branded residences, the best of SilverRock is yet to come. I have enjoyed being part of SilverRock from the very beginning and I look forward to being part of the next chapter. Is there anything you would like to add? I am extremely proud of the entire team effort everyone has put in to making SilverRock so successful. Starting with the tremendous support we have had from the City of La Quinta, City Manager, and City Council Members to all my Department Heads who make SilverRock successful and of course to the entire Staff at SilverRock. Anyone who has been part of SilverRock should be very proud. For more information about SilverRock Resort, visit silverrock.org.

CONTOUR DERMATOLOGY CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY AT DAY OF BEAUTY. MAKES $10,000 DONATION TO COACHELLA VALLEY HORSE RESCUE Submitted by: Contour Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center Staff Contour Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center celebrated its 20th Anniversary in early December with a Day of Beauty event benefitting the Coachella Valley Horse Rescue and Come Back Ranch Animal Sanctuary. It was a festive, well-attended event with guests enjoying cosmetic treatments, watching live demonstrations of cosmetic procedures and toasting to Contour’s 20 years of serving the Coachella Valley. Attendees also had the opportunity to meet Oreo Cookie, the rescue’s mascot pony, who delighted all who met her.

Contour’s tradition is to give back to the community by supporting a local charity at these events. Dr. Jochen and Executive Director Lee Erwin made a generous $10,000 donation to benefit the Coachella Valley Horse Rescue and Come Back Ranch Animal Sanctuary. The contribution will help save horses – 80 horses have been rescued to date – and contribute toward the non-profit’s community programs, including “Horsinalities” kids camps, community outreach and a veteran’s program, which has helped nearly 50 veterans.

“I moved here for the Southern California lifestyle and am so grateful to have developed a thriving practice here with three Coachella Valley locations,” said Dr. Timothy Jochen. “It’s been an amazing 20 years with support from referring physicians, the community and the chamber. We are continuing to grow and are adding an office in Loma Linda by spring and expanding our Palm Springs office.”

For volunteer or more information about the programs and services of Coachella Valley Horse Rescue and their new animal sanctuary, visit cvhorserescue.org. For more information about Contour Dermatology, visit contourderm.com.

Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Emily Falappino presented the practice with a certificate of recognition on the two-decade milestone, along with certificates from Congressman Raul Ruiz, State Senator Melissa Melendez, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors and a proclamation from the City of Rancho Mirage.
