MAKING A CITY OPENS AT LA QUINTA MUSEUM Submitted by: Sharla Fox / Museum Director

The La Quinta Museum welcomes you to learn about of the grassroots movement that turned a small corner of the desert into the official City of La Quinta in our new exhibit, Making a City.

Cahuilla, to the explorers, homesteaders, ranchers, and dreamers looking for a desert oasis. Visitors will enjoy a diorama of desert wildlife, vintage photos of ranch and resort life, examples of Cahuilla basketry, and more.

As the 1980s began, the small community known as La Quinta was facing considerable growth, coupled with a lack of services. A determined group of residents decided to band together and take action to have a voice in the fate of their community—and the rest is our City’s history. On May 1, 1982, La Quinta was officially incorporated, and now, forty years later, we take a look back at the challenges and rewards of civic engagement, and the difference that individuals with big ideas can make when they work together. Making a City, the 40th Anniversary exhibit in our local history focus gallery, recounts the events of 1982 in the words of the City’s first mayor, Fred Wolff. Visitors will experience the Incorporation of the City through photos, memorabilia, newspapers, and video featuring Kay Wolff reminiscing on the movement that started in her living room.

As always, La Quinta Museum complements our local history with enriching cultural exhibits. Currently we are pleased to present The Ranges Between: The Desert Art of Eric Merrell through May 21, 2022 The exhibit features the works created by desert master Eric Merrell, during his Artist Residency with the Mojave National Preserve Artist Foundation; and Nocturnes, a short film about the artist’s approach and dedication to painting night. Of these works, Merrell comments: “All of the pieces in this series seek to portray the singular experience I had while completing my residency in the Mojave National Preserve, and the work embodies the calm timelessness that was felt while spending time there… The enveloping silence leads easily to introspection, and awareness of how small we are in this landscape.”

Making a City is a special feature in the context of the larger history told in The Story of La Quinta in our upstairs galleries. Exhibiting objects from the archives of the La Quinta Historical Society, the local history galleries explore the stories of those that have shaped the City, from the original stewards of the land, the

CUNARD’S SANDBAR, A STAPLE OF LA QUINTA Submitted by: GCVCC Staff As we celebrate the 40th birthday of La Quinta, we also have a chance to celebrate 40 years of one of the longesttenured restaurants in the Gem of the Desert. Cunard’s Sandbar has a rich long history here in La Quinta, but its full history goes back even further. The building was built in the 1950s and was originally a laundromat. From there it was turned into various beer bars until the 1970’s when it became the La Quinta Tropics which even included a hitching post for horses. In the early 1980’s it became Freddy’s Sandbar which was a common hangout for a local motorcycle gang. In 1982, the location was purchased by Bob Cunard and became Cunard’s Sandbar. Upon purchasing the location, Mr. Cunard closed the location down for 3 months and remodeled it to begin its 40-year run as one of the favorite spots here in La Quinta. This year, Cunard’s Sandbar is celebrating its 40th season alongside the City of La Quinta. And in that time, Bob Cunard has become well versed in the restaurant and business game. He is the former owner of the Abobe Garden Hotel and Irongate Restaurant in Palm Desert as well as the Prevue in Rancho Mirage. He also owned and operated restaurants in San Rafael, Tiburon as well as the famous Duke Kahanamoku’s in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Mr. Cunard spoke on why he loves having a business in La Quinta. “It’s a wonderful place. I was involved in the original inception of the city. The city has been good for La Quinta and progressive. Fortunate to have great people on the council and our mayor. It’s a good place to raise your kids.” Want to know a bit more about what you can find at Cunard’s Sandbar? Main Dining Room The Sandbar main dining room includes four intimate booths and a scattering of tables, warmly lit by candlelight, with framed seascapes decorating the walls. Bar In the cozy bar, dinner is served at tables and at the bar. The atmosphere is energized, and the two large stainedglass windows cast a reflection on the gleaming white grand piano as talented entertainers take your requests. Patio The outdoor patio is dappled with white lights, a beautiful hanging stained glass, and a chandelier that is warmed by a New Mexico-style adobe fireplace. It is a great area for private parties, weddings, and corporate events. Wine Cellar Dining Room The romantic Wine Cellar dining room offers quieter seating, with views of our award-winning wine collection, as well as the outdoor patio. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR HOME PRICES IN LA QUINTA? Submitted by: Jeff Fishbein, Coldwell Banker Realty Here in the Coachella Valley, we have seen a steady rise in home prices over the past few years. This price surge is the result of more active buyers in the market than there are homes listed for sale. This mismatch between supply and demand means that housing affordability will be an increasingly important consideration for buyers. The main cause is an influx of buyers from surrounding areas that are looking for more affordable homes with more amenities than they can afford in their current metropolitan areas. In 2021 the Coachella Valley saw a 20.2% appreciation rate and La Quinta saw a 34.3% increase year over year. In 2022, most experts are forecasting continued price increases, just at a slower pace. During this same time, rents have risen by 13.6%, so making the decision to buy versus rent may give buyers the opportunity to purchase a home before prices increase further. By locking in a monthly mortgage payment now, owners can avoid the future projected rent increases. The good news for prospective buyers is you can rest assured that your investment in your home will be an asset that increases in value over time which boosts your long-term wealth gain through equity. Thus, purchasing a home may be the relatively more affordable housing option for many at this time. If you are hoping to buy a home today in La Quinta’s highly competitive market, it’s extremely important to make your offer stand out. If you’ve gotten advice from someone who’s purchased a home before, know that what has worked in the past may not ring true any longer. Today’s buyers shouldn’t shop for a home and expect to negotiate a lower sales price. If you’ve found

20

your dream home, you need to be realistic about today’s housing market. Most listings will receive multiple offers, above asking price, very soon after they are placed on the market. So, today’s asking price often represents the floor of the negotiation rather than the ceiling. Another thing to consider is that today’s interest rates still give buyers a great opportunity to buy. Many buyers ask, how will the current interest rates affect me? Let’s put it in perspective, even though rates today have climbed back into the 4% range, they are still incredibly competitive. Based on historical data from Freddie Mac, today’s rate is still lower than the average interest rate in each of the past five decades. So, buying now still makes sense. Although, experts expect the rates to continue to rise. Thus, the longer you wait, the more it will cost per month to borrow the same amount of money to buy the same home which decreases your purchase power. Being educated and informed on the homebuying process will help you to make the best possible decision about when to purchase a home. The bottom line is that even if more sellers were to list their homes this season, it will still be a highly competitive market. Be ready to act quickly when you find the right home for you. Jeff Fishbein is a REALTOR with the desert’s leading Coldwell Banker Realty. Jeff has tremendous success in helping home sellers and buyers with a 5 Star rating on Zillow.com. Jeff’s motto is “NOT the BIGGEST Realtor, but the BEST!” Jeff is also very active in La Quinta, serving as the past Chairman of the GCV La Quinta Chamber of Commerce and currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Regional GCVCC Board of Directors.

THREE TYPES OF DENTAL COVERAGE Submitted by: Randy Foulds, Foulds & Feldmann Insurance Agency

If you are offered dental insurance through your work, you might have a choice of PPO or HMO. But if you get dental coverage on your own, there is usually a third option. Dental discount plans. Dental insurance is not what it used to be. Many PPO plans have waiting periods for services, and maximum coverage amounts that don’t seem to cover a lot of services. HMO plans may not have a waiting period or a maximum coverage amount but they often don’t cover major services or orthodontics.

Your Local Medicare Experts. But dont just take our word for it.

Anthem named Foulds Health Insurance one of the top agencies in California!

Dental PPO is what most people remember as their legacy dental insurance plans. An in-network dentist provides preventive and major services for a set co-pay amount. When you enroll individually, major services usually have a waiting period as long as 12 months. This may be waived if you had previous coverage and enroll with little or no gap between ending and starting the new coverage. There is usually an annual maximum amount of coverage, often as low as $1,000. Dental HMO plans typically have no waiting period for services, and also no maximum on coverage. But the amount you pay for anything beyond basic checkups can be a large percentage of the cost and common services such as crowns are barely covered if at all. Dental discount plans are a good option for many. These plans can be used immediately, with no waiting period. The monthly or annual premiums are low, and discounts off list prices are offered on all the most common services including crowns. Like a PPO or HMO, you must use dentists who have agreed to the terms of that plan and are considered in-network. All plans offer online provider directories or even an app for you to search form dentists in your area. Just like health insurance, dental insurance is never one size fits all, so read the limits and exclusions of each plan offer carefully, and know what costs to expect when you visit your dentist.
