Live Well - a Clinic and a Philosophy Submitted by: Live Well Clinic Staff The Live Well Clinic provides comprehensive healthcare for individuals, understanding the body’s innate ability to heal itself through natural and intuitive methods. Their practitioners deliver common-sense, nourishing, non-toxic therapies to help patients - young and old - reach their maximum level of wellness. Therapies that are integral to current day naturopathic medicine in the US date back to the 1700s in Europe. Institutions in the United States started popping up as long ago as the early 1800s. There were many influential contributors, publications, and brick and mortar institutions established over the next century that focused on non-invasive therapies and shared discontent with the “heroic” medicine of the age that mainly used treatments of bloodletting and mercury administration. In 1844, the American Institute of Homeopathy became the first national medical s ociety in the US. Two years later, the American Medical Association was founded in response to the successful growth of homeopathy and by 1855 had added a clause that any practicing physician would lose their license if they consulted with a homeopath. This political move, based on greed and without regard to the wellbeing of the patients, almost single-handedly strangled the lifeline to current day naturopathic medicine in the US. By 1901, a German immigrant named Aloysia Stroebele (known in historical texts as Louisa Lust), a well-established practitioner of naturopathic medicine in the U.S., married Dr. Benedict Lust, who had been commissioned to bring his teachings to the U.S. His teachings focused on healthy lifestyle and hydrotherapy. Louisa had studied the “nature cure” methods of Rikli and Kuhne in London and continued her

studies at Columbia University once in the U.S. Together, the couple are considered to have been a significant driving force of naturopathic medicine in the U.S. This was reinforced by the work of Henry Lindlahr, who believed in the healing power of nature, removed obstacles to cure, and synthesized what he believed to be the best practices thus far from the “nature cure” approach. This contradicted the medical model of symptoms suppression. He proposed five categories 1) return to nature (food as medicine, identify food reactions, maintain healthy working conditions, rest and relaxation), 2) elemental remedies (hydrotherapy, fresh air, light, electricity), 3) chemical therapies (herbs and homeopathy), 4) mechanical rem edies (osteopathy, massage, manual manipulation). Diseases cannot be pinpointed to just one variable. By the time disease has developed, many variables have come into play. For this reason, the holistic approach of naturopathic medicine excels in treating chronic disease and helps to move the individual to a better state of wellness in general. Fortunately, naturopathic medicine not only survived, but it is also flourishing. This has been driven by patient preference and discontent with the medical care they are receiving. Naturopathic physicians today learn therapies mentioned above, as well as pharmacology, counseling, and minor surgery, incorporating advancements in medicine, scientific technology, and cutting edge therapies to provide care that treats the whole person, not just a disease. If you would like to make an appointment with a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) at the Live Well Clinic, please call 760-771-5970 or vi sit their website at https://livewellclinic.org/.

IRONMAN: A Locals Journey Submitted by: GCVCC Staff

On December 8th, triathletes from around the world will come to La Quinta for IRONMAN 70.3 Indian WellsLa Quinta. The IRONMAN 70.3 is a 1.2-mile swim, 56mile bike and 13.1 mile run triathlon. This event offers 40 qualifying spots to the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Taup, New Zealand. We talked with the Salton Sea Triathlon Club to learn about triathletes in our area running in this year’s event. The Salton Sea Triathlon Club was created to promote triathlons in the Coachella Valley and Southern California community, while fostering a sense of camaraderie, fun, and a healthy lifestyle. The group’s focus is as a Triathlon Club, but you quickly see a familystyle bond among the members that extends beyond the sport. Through the club, they are provided with opportunities to meet fellow athletes and find training buddies through social networks and weekly group training events.

8

We spoke with Alex Napier, the Volunteer Director and Community Liaison for IRONMAN 70.3 Indian WellsLa Quinta. “This is my first year in this role. Last year, I was a volunteer for the event.” The role she has taken on is focused on education. “I’ve been working with the cities to help educate the community on the impact of the race has on the Coachella Valley. While there are many positives: it’s a healthy lifestyle event, brings in triathletes and their families from around the world, it’s a place for volunteers to give back and be part of something larger than themselves, and the Ironman Foundation provides grant funding to local school clubs, teams and charities; we’re also focused on sharing the updated bicycle route map and detour plans with everyone. “ A strong group of volunteers from around the Coachella Valley help make this event happen. Napier told us that volunteers from Palm Springs to Coachella, and as far away as Twentynine Palms come together to help support the event. The volunteers help with the behind-the-scenes work that creates a seamless event for the triathletes to be a part of. The volunteers are vital because of the extensive number of triathletes participating in the event. Napier told us that last year’s event sold out at 3,000 triathletes - nearly 2,400 of which dove in at the start of the race. Napier was captain of the Salton Sea Triathlon Club’s volunteer team in 2018, which had about 20 local members racing, with an additional 50 volunteering at what they call the infamous “Aid Station 1” on the run course.

“Our athletes all had a ball, but I think the volunteers I worked with had more fun that day,” Napier says. The Salton Sea Triathlon Club has approximately 150 members, and this year Napier expects to have about 10-20 triathletes from La Quinta in their group. She reminded us that there are still many other triathletes around the valley, and their motivation to race is varied. “While many are racing against themselves to “beat yesterday”, there is a small percentage who are vying to be the best in their age group, and possibly the world,” said Napier. “Winners of age groups, divided into 5-year increments, earn the opportunity to race at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. There are only a few slots available to the World Championship race in every group, and competition for them is fierce.” Casta Estela Flores, a supporter of the Salton Sea Triathlon Club, knows first-hand about the diverse nature of the competitors participating in the event. Her husband Jose, who is involved with the Triathlon, is one of the athletes that has used the event for much more than competition. As a teenager, Jose joined the Red Cross and participated in acuático races in his native country, El Salvador. Older now, and facing some health challenges, he started cycling and participating in race events with a group of friends three years ago. He joined the Triathlon Club two years ago, wanting to get back into the water and race again to fulfill a dream of doing the IRONMAN 70.3 when he reached 50 years old. He was able to fulfill his dream here at home and improve his health in the process. His wife says Jose is now healthy and full of life, and ready to do his first full IRONMAN next year. Stories like Jose’s are not uncommon in IRONMAN. Napier told of a racer who was the last triathlete to finish the course. The sun was setting, she was exhausted but determined to finish. The Salton Sea Triathlon Club stayed at their post on the run course, singing, dancing and cheering her to the finish line!

When it comes to IRONMAN, all types of people come out to race for all different reasons. Napier hopes people look closely at who the triathletes swimming, riding, and running through their community are, they might spot a neighbor or friend. For more information about the Salton Sea Triathlon Club and how you can get involved, visit www. saltonseatriathlonclub.com. Don’t miss the community meeting held at the La Quinta Wellness Center on Thursday, November 14th from 5:00pm to 6:30pm. City Manager’s Message By: Jon McMillen, La Quinta City Manager As we step into the holiday season, our city continues to work throughout the city for our residents. This work will be on full display in November and the coming months. The La Quinta Village Complete Streets Project work within the roadways is anticipated to be completed by Thanksgiving. The contractor will then begin construction on the sidewalks along Calle Tampico, to allow for improved traffic flow during the season. Stage 2 of the project will begin in January 2020 at the Avenue 52 and Bermudas roundabout. You can sign up for alerts and stay updated on the project progress by texting LAQUINTAVILLAGE to 22828. The Eisenhower Retention Basin construction continues along Eisenhower Drive. The contractor is building a storm drain pipe and catch basins on Eisenhower Drive. This project is anticipated to complete construction in December 2019. The La Quinta Landscape Renovation Improvement Project in La Quinta Highlands is Phase 4 of the Measure G funded La Quinta Landscape Renovation Project. The project entails converting approximately 81,000 square feet of parkway along Fred waring Drive and Adams Street and the La Vistas Drive median to the Desert Oasis plant palette. Construction is underway and the contractor is installing plants, trees, gravel, and cobble on Fred Waring and Las Vistas Drive and is anticipated to be completed by January 2020. The Cove Public Restroom and Trailhead Improvements include installing a prefabricated restroom facility, trail entrance signs, seating, shade, and a water fountain next to the current parking lot on the east end of Calle Tecate. The project is anticipated to start construction in late this month. The Calle Tecate Parking Lot Improvements Project will construct a 40-space parking lot on the south side of Calle Tecate near the existing trailhead to alleviate on-street parking concerns. Don’t forget to sign up for Nixle. Nixle keeps you up-to-date with relevant information from your local public safety departments & schools. Sign up for alerts by texting your zip code (92253) to 888777. The Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony will be held at La Quinta City Hall on November 11, from 9 AM to 10:30 AM. The Veteran Recognition Program collects, preserves, and recognizes the sacrifice and valiant efforts of American Military Service Members by engraving their name, rank,

14

and years of service onto the Veterans Acknowledgement Sculpture. Also, be sure to save the date for our Tree Lighting event. It will be held on December 6 from 6 PM to 9 PM at Civic Center Park. Make sure to take a look at our beautiful IRONMAN Street Banners throughout La Quinta welcoming all of the Triathletes to this year’s IRONMAN on December 8th. Let’s not forget to take a moment and remember all our brave Veterans during the month of November. Most importantly, let’s honor them by exercising our right to vote on November 5th. I’m looking forward to seeing you all out and about in our Gem of the Desert.

SilverRock Resort

Opening After Overseeding We are very excited about the reopening of the Arnold Palmer Classic Course at SilverRock Resort on November 5, 2019 after overseeding. Upon reopening on November 5th, all golf carts will be restricted to Cart Paths Only up to Thanksgiving Week. This is to protect the newly planted rye grass that is still fragile and susceptible to damage from golf carts. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Also, on November 5th, the restaurant and patio dining area will reopen for breakfast and lunch as well as the driving range. Construction Update Pre-construction on the 2 luxury hotels have begun with mass grading complete on the Pendry hotel site and near completion on the Montage hotel site. Despite all the busy activity, the course and restaurant will be open year round with minimal disruption to the operation. Expect some rerouting of golf cart traffic at times but nothing that will impact golf play significantly. The golf shop, cart barn and parking have been relocated to the south side of #2 tee box. Follow signs as you enter SilverRock Way to the new parking location. There will be minimal auto parking near the Ahmanson Ranch House for the restaurant. However, there will be a golf cart shuttle running on a daily basis from the new parking location to the restaurant if no parking is available near the Ahmanson Ranch House. Walk the Rock SilverRock continues the popular Walk the Rock program this season. Golfers are able to walk and play golf starting at 3:00 p.m.. La Quinta Residents with valid La Quinta Resident Cards will pay $25 and juniors (under the age of 17) will pay $10. Non La Quinta Residents will pay $40. Please contact the golf shop for reservations or questions. 760-777-8884. PAID ADVERTISEMENT

Chapelli’s How do you steer an ostrich? So, a couple walks into our bar last night and sits down the only two remaining chairs left. They are younger than the other two couples. Let me just say they have more than a “few” tattoos and are a little less conservative than the other people at the bar. I do know that everyone at the bar is “regulars” and thinks this should make for an interesting evening. After the customary whos who, where do you live, what do you do, conversations, I remembered a previous conversation I had with this guy about growing up around elephants as a kid, so I asked him about it. That’s about when the whole conversation took a new direction. I mean, do you know anyone who has an elephant? So, the younger man that I shall name Brett (as in Brett Michaels) takes this opportunity to tell everyone about elephants and leopards and then begins to talk about how much he hates monkeys and how nasty they are. I am sitting back watching the other people’s interest in this conversation and it’s a riot! At one point in the conversation, he looks quickly up at me and asks, “Do you know how to steer an ostrich?”

He was totally dead serious!! I was taken back and said…like those big ugly birds? Heck, horses scare me to death, why would I know anything about a big scary bird! So no, I have no idea. The seemingly very proper woman sitting next to him suddenly speaks up and says…I love watching those crazy camel and ostrich races at the Date festival! Now I’m dying laughing thinking this would be the last place this woman would go but what the heck, ya never know. So, it turns out “Brett” used to be a camel jockey and raced ostriches also. He then begins to tell everyone that you hold a broom out over the eye which “I guess’ make the ostrich run in that direction. So, I am quickly running out of room so if there is a moral to this story, here it is. If your ever at an ostrich race and the birds break free, quickly run to the nearest janitor's closet and grab a broom, then run behind this scary animal, hold the broom over one eye and steer that beast back to the corral. I wish you all good luck with that cause personally, if I ever go watch a race and they get out, FUGGETABOTIT, I’m headed the opposite direction as those birds. I’ve seen Jurassic Park…it doesn’t end well! Have a great day and stop by! You never know what you’ll learn for other people. John S. Reynolds Chapellisrestaurant.com Sponsored Content

Your Perfect Optical Options Submitted by: GCVCC Staff Having the right contact lenses and glasses can really help a person stand out. The right selection can help create the perfect look, as well as prevent health risks associated with wearing the wrong items. We sat down with Perspective Optometry for advice on how to choose the correct glasses and contacts for you. Can you tell us a little bit about Perspective Optometry? Here at Perspective, we are all about the intersection of art and science in eyecare and eyewear. A person’s vision is a very unique and personal experience. We aim to provide the union of the subjective view of a person and the objective science, to ensure each person’s visual needs are uniquely met. This approach also carries over to our eyewear selection and ophthalmic lens offerings. What are some tips for choosing the perfect glasses? Well this is the fun part, because frame styling and selection is all about that intersection of art and science. There are so many amazing options in eyewear that bring together fashion and function. Working with an optician gives you added insight on how your spectacle lenses will play with your beautiful new frame, and how to ensure your vision is the clearest possible for your prescription. Some quick tips: 1. Ensure the lenses and prescription work well with the frame. Your certified optician can help guide you through this process. 2. Aim for a good technical fit. Are the eyes nicely centered? Is the frame not touching the face in too many spots? Does the bridge fit nicely on the nose? 3. Look for frames that help to compliment your face shape, keeping in mind aspects of facial structure and prominent features. Glasses are a very personal experience and become an extension of who you are and how you present yourself to the world. 4. Make sure you are comfortable with the materials of the frame. A key area to look at is the bridge - are you comfortable with nose pads? Would a keyhole bridge be advantageous? You also want to think about weight, allergies, and other aspects of how the frame and its materials will interact with your look. 5. Don’t be afraid to try things on! Sometimes you’ll be surprised at how subtle a bold frame can end up looking 24

on the face. Everybody has a unique size and shape and it’s important to get comfort and function from your glasses. The best fit is a pair that ultimately makes you feel good, looks good on you, and helps you to see the world more clearly. Are contacts sometimes better for someone than glasses? There is a place for both corrective eyewear options for many patients. Ultimately, the answer is determined by the individual needs and lifestyle of the wearer. We always recommend for full-time contact lens wearers to ensure they have a backup pair, to give the eyes an opportunity to rest from their contacts and to have a good pair of sunglasses to protect the eyes and surrounding area from harmful UV rays. For most contact wearers, there is also a need for glasses. The same for people that wear glasses, when prescription allows its nice to have the option of a contact lens for special occasions such as travel, sports, etc. With daily contacts there are many options now available. Are there any potential health hazards from wearing the wrong type of contacts or glasses? Wearing the wrong prescription can, in some cases, negatively impact vision. Especially with contact lenses, proper care and replacement is essential to ensure your overall eye health remains in good condition. Are glasses or contacts better for athletics? This depends on the individual. Different prescriptions can pose different challenges in either contacts or sports goggles. For the active sport enthusiast, we have sport-specific solutions that address their use case, for instance optimized tints for golf or cycling. For folks who are not able to gain optimal correction in contact lenses, we also offer sports goggles. The latest innovation in contact lenses includes photochromic technology to help in softening the glare from the sun. We like to take the time to ensure we know what the patient is doing and recommend the best solution for their use case or lifestyle. What are some common misconceptions about glasses and contacts? That all are created equal. There is a wide range of

quality and materials out there. We think it’s all about value. There’s a place for all sorts of eyewear in the world and in each patients day-to-day. With glasses, finding the right fit is critical and this can be very hard to do without trying things on. For contacts, there is a common misconception that they are mostly alike. Many patients do not realize that the materials and breathability of the eye can, especially over long-term use, cause serious implications on the eye’s health. Annual contact assessments help to ensure your eyes remain unaffected by regular usage and that your cleaning care routine is working well for the combination of the contact lenses and solutions you are using. Is there anything you would like to add? We’re happy to be here to serve the La Quinta and Coachella Valley community, and especially proud to be a member of the local Chamber of Commerce. There are a lot of small businesses like us out here and we are proud to be a part of that community and provide a unique and curated experience in eyecare.
