LAQUINTA CHAM
1950A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER
The September 2022 edition of The La Quinta Gem featured an article on a proposed wave park development in La Quinta. This article was included in The La Quinta Gem as a paid editorial piece by the developer. We received a lot of feedback about this piece from you – the La Quinta community. First and foremost, it’s important that you know that The La Quinta Gem is an independently-published community magazine produced by the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce. We strive to feature articles, news and updates for your benefit. The City of La Quinta proudly sponsors a section of the magazine fea turing City-specific programs as well as a message from the City Manager’s office. Additionally, we source articles from our local business community to help deliver information we hope you’ll find useful. Our recent feature on the wave park was in tended to be educational. In lieu of featur ing this information as an advertisement, we elected to use a Q&A approach in an advertorial format to address some of the questions that have been circulating about this proposed project. The Board of the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce and our publishing team all want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank you for sharing your points of view on this topic.
The Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce (GCVCC) was created in 2016 in cooperation with the former Coachella, La Quinta, Cathedral City and Indio Chambers, along with the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians and Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians. It enhances and significantly improves the way businesses interact with each other and the community in the entire Coachella Valley. As a Regional Chamber, the GCVCC delivers services and benefits to its members on a scope not seen before in the area.

Celebrate La
Submitted by: GCVCC StaffFor longtime La Quinta residents, it may seem hard to believe that our beloved community is celebrating 40 years of cityhood. Most of La Quinta’s growth as a city has happened in the past two decades. For many years, La Quinta’s commercial corridor was made up of just two shopping centers on Washington and Highway 111.
New stores and restaurants have filled out the Highway 111 stretch between Washington and Jefferson Streets as well as the La Quinta Village area, and the additions of SilverRock Resort, the La Quinta Civic Center Campus, the La Quinta Museum, the Wellness Center and the La Quinta Skate Park have brought new recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
The La Quinta State of the City, Business Awards and Expo will celebrate the City’s 40th Anniversary in a big way, including fireworks, a live band and a “taste” of La Quinta. It’s happening Thursday, October 6th, at the La Quinta Resort & Club – where it all began.
The La Quinta Hotel: An Elite Retreat
La Quinta started as a private getaway for Hollywood legends like Greta Garbo and Clark Gable with the inception of the La Quinta Hotel in 1926 (now the exclusive La Quinta Resort & Club). For decades, the rich and famous escaped to La Quinta’s secluded hotel and casitas, and in 1982, the City of La Quinta officially incorporated.
Soon the secret was out, and those seeking year-round sunshine, scenic hiking and biking trails and great golf made their way to La Quinta. The City’s leaders put thoughtful planning into the development of the community, ensuring the natural beauty was preserved
while being balanced with necessary facilities and services. Historic roots are blended with modern conveniences and varied recreation – all framed by the picturesque surroundings – of which the Santa Rosa Mountains are the crowning jewel. Perhaps that’s why La Quinta so aptly earned the moniker, “The Gem of the Desert.”
40th Anniversary Celebration for All Ages
The Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the City of La Quinta, is hosting the La Quinta State of the City, Business Awards and Expo. This extraordinary 40-year celebration will be held on Thursday, October 6th, at the La Quinta Resort & Club, beginning at 4:30pm with registration, the business expo and a Taste of La Quinta food experience – featuring five unique food stations created by the resort chefs.
The State of the City presentation will be held from 6:00-7:30pm, offering a review of economic activity from the previous year, as well as future development plans significant to the business community. The La Quinta Mayor and City Council will be the featured speakers for this event. In addition to an update from the City, local business professionals will be recognized for professional accomplishments and significant contributions to their community. Among the categories honored will be Business of the Year.
The grand finale will include a live music by The Refills and fireworks from 7:30-8:30pm.
This event generally sells out, so review your ticket options by going to GCVCC.org. Contact the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber at 760.347.0676 for more information.
XPARK GRAND OPENING
Submitted by: GCVCC StaffIn the skateboarding culture, it was not uncommon in the 1970’s and 80’s to hear whispers of the famed Pipeline Skatepark in Upland California where it’s innovative design gave a Zen like practice to some of the most artful skateboarders in Southern California history. The ‘combi bowl’ being one of the first of its kind as well as satisfying all skate levels, was both innovation and a move forward to inclusivity to skateboarders of all ages and experience.
Fast forward to our very own skate park in La Quinta inspired by that very place, adding in cutting edge modern design that satisfies skateboarders of all levels and ages. A powerful unified experience for all ages that share in the love of skate boarding. La Quinta tapped Los Angeles-based Spohn Ranch Skateparks, which has created municipal skateparks across the country, has newly completed landscaping that includes natural and artificial turn used at standing and resting areas.
Located on the South East corner of Dune Palms Road and Blackhawk Way, features of the 31,000-square-foot venue include an on-site pro shop, a concrete pump track course for multiple disciplines, and a trio of bowls designed to satisfy all skate levels — including the massive combi-bowl created as an homage to Pipeline Skatepark.
What has been created with the concrete pump track is a looping racetrack which holds various moguls, bumps, berms, turns — which can be used for all styles of wheels, and is also touted as the largest concrete pump track
course in the state, if not the nation. The inspiration by it’s stand alone innovative design that harks a classic skating destination yet keeps a modern and current structure that will appeal to generations to come.
Housing the 1,400-square-foot pro shop offers rentals and also a robust retail component, along with the ability to re pair boards and bikes, and it also includes a concessions area.
With the park taking great statewide notice, it was visited by the iconic Tony Hawk himself, giving it his seal of approval upon slicing through the parks features, sharing a grin and an excitable thumbs up. Along with Hawk, the legendary local himself Eddie Elguera gave the XPark a spin a few times and with the same cunning moves that made him a champion, finishing a set with an almost ethereal smile accompanied by his approval in a thumbs up. Any skateboarder can tell you that the seal of approval from both Hawk and Elguera equates into a place where champions are made.
Sustainability has always been a primer in the Coachella Valley, and a “board yard” has been installed to allow participants to leave portions of skateboards no longer useable, a concept brought over from the skate park at La Quinta Park.
XPark promises to be one of the most thrilling and one of a kind destinations for so many skate boarders and those immersed in a culture that promotes unity and skill and welcomes all. Don’t miss the grand opening celebration, starting with a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 22, at the XPark. Best trick contests, pro demonstrations, and more are planned.
More details to come. Check the website, www.laquintaxpark.com, for updates.

OTHER CITY UPDATES
November 8 is Election Day
In addition to Mayor and Council candidates, La Quinta residents are voting on whether to phase out and permanently ban non-hosted short-term vacation rentals in the City by December 31, 2024, except in exempted areas. Measure A is a ballot initiative submitted by a group of residents affiliated with an organization called “Neigh bors for Neighborhoods,” or N4N. In accordance with state elections law, the City Council took official action to oppose the ballot initiative, which, if passed, would mean
a loss of general fund revenues estimated to be at least $6 million annually. This loss of revenue would impact the funding of services paid by the City from general fund rev enues, including law enforcement, roadwork, landscaping and other capital improvements. More information about Measure A can be found in this edition of The Gem, and on the City’s website, www.laquintaca.gov/measurea.
