While we have all now adapted to a new(ish) way of doing things, I want to let you know that our businesses and restaurants do still need you. In-person events are coming back and we would love to see you all safely enjoy the fun and vibrant lifestyle La Quinta offers this season. Concerts in the park at the new Silverrock Events site are a fantastic night out under the desert sky. Pick up a to-go order and join us on the lawn!

FUL

As a community, La Quinta showed up and helped our small businesses keep their doors open and helped their staffs keep their livelihoods. You did that!

In March of last year when our state implemented stay-at-home orders, I got on the phone and started calling all our La Quinta small businesses to ask how they were handling the news and what the Chamber of Commerce could do to help. More than anything, they wanted people to know they were still open and to keep shopping/dining/ordering in whatever way they could.

Hello, neighbors!

EN SE D & IN

Regionally, we have major sporting events starting soon, including the BNP Paribas this month and the Ironman challenge in December. These and other nationally known events like our La Quinta Arts Celebration provide a wonderful boost to our local economy - but you, our locals, are the heart of our community and keep us thriving. We appreciate you and we need you just as much as we did 18 months ago. Thank you all for being such great neighbors! Elisa Guerrero is a lifelong Coachella Valley resident and alumnus of La Quinta High School class of 2000. She and her husband are the owners of Village Peddler Bike Rental in La Quinta and take great pride in showcasing the area to the thousands of tourists they meet each year. She lives in La Quinta with her husband and two small children.

MORE TO LOVE ABOUT LA QUINTA: MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR THESE POPULAR OUTINGS Submitted by: GCVCC and City of La Quinta Staff La Quinta is known for its picturesque scenery, and there are a number of ways to get out and enjoy the surroundings of our beautiful community in the upcoming winter months. From honoring those who’ve served our great nation on Veterans Day to being entertained by live music and beer tastings, La Quinta offers a broad range of events you’ll want to be sure to put on your calendar. Veterans Day A Time to Honor Our Veterans – Veterans Acknowledgement Ceremony Thursday, November 11th 9 a.m. The event will feature live musical performances, speeches by dignitaries and a visit to the Veterans Acknowledgment Monuments. This event will be streamed live on the city of La Quinta’s Facebook page. Veterans Acknowledgement Monuments by Artist William Ware Two Veterans Acknowledgement Monuments at Civic Center Park were created to recognize the brave men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces. The monuments feature bronze panels engraved with names, ranks, dates of service, and military branches of La Quinta residents who were also honored at the City’s Veterans Acknowledgement Ceremony. There are currently over 150 veteran names engraved on the panels. The Veteran Recognition Program collects, preserves, and recognizes the sacrifice and valiant efforts of American military service members by engraving their name, rank, and years of service onto the Veterans Acknowledgement Monuments at the Civic Center Campus. General Requirements for nomination: 1. Served our country in active duty 2. Honorable separation from service (please attach DD214 form, Honorable Discharge Certificate, or equivalent showing active service and honorable separation) 3. Residency Requirements a. ACTIVE MILITARY from 1953 and EARLIER must have been a past or current resident of La Quinta (no minimum years) b. OPEN AIR NOT-TO-MISS HAPPENINGS IN OLD TOWN LA QUINTA Submitted by: GCVCC and Old Town La Quinta Staff If you’re looking for ways to enjoy the spectacular beauty showcased in La Quinta this season, Old Town La Quinta has some signature open-air events that you won’t want to miss. Art on Main Street returns for the 2021-22 season, with over 70 new and returning artists featuring their artwork at the shows. Art on Main Director, Shelley Glickstein, comments that “artists have spent a lot of time in their studios over the past 18 months while so many shows were cancelled. Many have developed new styles, explored new design processes, and are very excited about returning to the marketplace.” Art on Main Street is a unique event in the Coachella Valley – showcasing local and Southern California artists with only a few traveling in from neighboring states. Even so, the inspiration for their art is surprisingly international. To travel the world on a Saturday afternoon, just walk down Old Town’s charming Main Street during an art show. Enjoy reconnecting with artists and friends as you explore paintings, jewelry, mixed media, photography, ceramics, glass, woodwork, textiles, sculptures and more at Art on Main Street. The City of La Quinta is the Premier Sponsor. Admission, parking and entertainment are free.

Another popular event featured in Old Town La Quinta is the Certified Farmers’ Market – which returns every Sunday with new hours but the same dedication to fresh food and healthy living as in past seasons. Since 2009, this farmers’ market has offered both residents and visitors a taste of SoCal’s superior small family farm fruits and vegetables as well as prepared foods from the kitchens of the most creative culinary entrepreneurs in the Coachella Valley. This season, watch for the additions of Nava Nosh gourmet bagels and wellness consultations from Feet Envy Reflexology – just to name a few. The new hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., will accommodate the leisurely vibe on Sunday mornings while giving new rotating pop-up restaurants a chance to offer customers a bite of lunch. The Certified Farmers’ Market will be held every Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and is located at 78-100 Main Street in La Quinta. CONTOUR DERMATOLOGY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF SERVICE

Submitted by: Contour Dermatology Staff From one office in Palm Springs in 2001, with one staff member, to three offices valley wide, a staff of nearly 70 and plans to expand to Loma Linda late this year, Timothy Jochen, MD, founder of Contour Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center, shares his excitement as the practice celebrates 20 years of service to the valley. Why did you choose the Coachella Valley? I grew up in Lansing, Michigan and couldn’t wait to move away. My medical training took me all over the country – New York, Louisiana and California. I fell in love with California. From the minute I came to the desert, the doctors in the valley would refer to me. It is a very supportive, warm, welcoming community. What’s your business style? I am a master delegator. I’ve hired a team of very bright people. I’m great at keeping the tasks that only I can do and delegating the rest. If you allow people to use their talents to make the practice better, they develop a passion for what they do, and that can really make a difference.

20

What’s the secret ingredient to Contour’s success? The culture we have developed with our core values and commitment to education is one of the main reasons I believe we are successful. I would say the business secret is that I’m obsessed with what makes people beautiful. I’ve studied it and can systematically evaluate a face quickly to determine what will help. And I like to get to know my patients. It’s important to have a connection with a person you’re working with because beauty and skin are very personal. What is your vision for Contour Dermatology? Our mission is to help cure people of skin disease and make them look beautiful and feel beautiful. Feeling beautiful also includes making patients feel special, appreciated and having a comfortable space for them to relax in. My dream would be to have a chain of Contours nationwide. That’s one of the things I’d love to develop. Visit contourderm.com for more information.

This is known as the SALT limit. In a high-income state like California, this has resulted in the loss of a deduction and an increase in federal tax. However, there is good news with the recent passage of AB 150 for members of pass-thru entities, such as S corporations, LLC’s and partnerships. AB 150 created a work-around for the current $10,000 SALT limit. This bill permits an elective tax that allows taxes related to the pass-thru income to be paid at the entity level. This means owners will be able to bypass the SALT cap limit. Qualified owners must consent to the entity making the election to pay the elective tax. The rate of the tax to be paid is 9.3% of the owner’s share of net income. Not all owners need to make the election. The benefit of making the election is that the tax paid reduces the federal K-1 taxable income, and the amount of tax paid is a credit on the personal state tax return to offset state income tax. The credit is a nonrefundable credit against California income tax. If the credit exceeds the tax liability, the excess credit can be carried forward for up to five years. The FTB will be issuing more guidance as to the method of election and forms to file to make the payment of tax. For federal income tax purposes, there will only be a reduction of 2021 K-1 income if the payment of tax is made before the end of 2021. This means that prior to year-end, the entity will have to estimate pass-thru income and each member will have to determine their share of allocated income – then notify the entity to make the tax payment on their behalf. Note: the amount of payment that is permitted is 9.3% of the allocated K-1 income. Actions that should be considered at this time include: 1) Determine projected pass-thru income for 2021; 2) If an election will be made, it may be possible to reduce other tax payments to the state by Form 540-

es or withholding of state taxes through wages; and 3) Prepare 2021 tax projections to determine if AB 150 will be of benefit to you. As noted, the FTB will be issuing more information as to the method to make the election and forms for the payment of the tax. AB 150 has the potential to be very beneficial to owners of pass-thru entities when the right course of action is followed. Bruce Legawiec, CPA, is a partner with Osborne Rincon. ANNUAL NOTICE OF CHANGE Submitted by: Randy Foulds of Foulds Health Insurance Agency Change is inevitable. For health insurance, this is the season of change. First up for those of you who have a Medicare Part D drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan, you will soon receive your Annual Notice of Change if you have not already. This comprehensive document will advise you if your premium, pharmacy network, co-pays or any other significant costs are changing. Review it carefully and, if you are comfortable with the plan going forward, you do not need to do anything. Your plan enrollment automatically renews and carries over to the next year. For Medicare Part A and B, changes in the premium and deductible amounts are normally announced in midNovember but these changes are usually fairly small. Watch for your Social security notice and the notice of Part B premium change. You can also view these notices online at SSA.gov if you set up a My SSA account.

For individual plan enrollees, premium and coverage changes will be coming shortly, both from Covered CA and from your private insurer. If your plan premium adjusts and you want to compare it to other plans available, your best bet is to log into your Covered CA account, or use their “shop and compare” tool. Again, if you do nothing, your plan rolls over to the next year. As long as you pay your premium, you should not need to re-enroll. For those covered by group insurance through an employer, your renewal date may differ. But its always a good idea to know exactly what your deadline is. Your employer can best answer that question for you. This is provided for informational purposes only and is not intended to substitute for professional advice.
