Keep Your Pets Active and Healthy An interview with Tania aka Desert Dog Mom What are some good sources of exercise for pets? The best exercise for dogs is the same as with people whatever your dog enjoys. Walks. Running. Bike rides. Swimming. Out here in the desert, heat is always an issue so I utilize a treadmill during the hot season. Are there differences between what you should do for your pets when they’re adults or when they’re puppies? To some extent, yes. When your dog is a puppy it is important to have engagement with your pup. Don’t just put a bowl of food down - make it an opportunity to enhance the relationship. Are there any nutritional guidelines one should follow to keep their pet active and healthy? There are so many ways to achieve proper nutrition. Some feed raw, canned, kibble, grain-free. I do a grainfree kibble with a freeze-dried raw topper. Making sure your guy is not overweight, is producing healthy stool, and isn’t feeling bogged down by his food, is my goal. How much does socializing your pet affect how active and healthy they are? I tend to focus more on “exposure” versus “socializing.” Exposing your dog to different scenarios, sounds,

scents, and environments makes for a well-balanced state-of-mind dog. What are some signs a pet can give to show you they need to be more active or change their habits? Being overweight, easily fatigued, or uninterested in what once was enticing to them are all signs that something is off-balance. Are there any safety tips you could give about keeping your pet active and healthy? Out here in the Coachella Valley it is very important to keep the temperature in mind when exercising your dog. At the end of a hot day, even after the sun has set, the asphalt can hold heat longer. Keep their paws protected and test out the temperature with your hand or your foot. And most importantly, keep them hydrated after a walk or play session. All information was provided by Tania aka Desert Dog Mom. She operates a three-week board & train program on the east end of the Valley. She is committed to training the family pet to have manners, respect, and boundaries so you can enjoy a loving and positive life together. Follow Desert Dog Mom on Facebook and Instagram to see their journey. 7

Chairman’s Message Ray Dominguez, Chairman | Lamar Outdoor Advertising Hello, La Quinta! I am very excited to serve our business community as the 2019/2020 La Quinta Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman. I have served on the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce Board for 5 years. This year holds some exciting events and advocacy work for our business community. I am looking forward to working with the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce staff, as well as the City of La Quinta, to help promote business in our Gem of the Desert. Kicking off our event season is the La Quinta State of the City and Business Awards. This event will be held on October 2nd at Embassy Suites by Hilton La Quinta Hotel & Spa, beginning with a Business Expo from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM. Registration begins at 11:00 AM and the event is scheduled to conclude at 2:00 PM. In addition to a city update, local business professionals will be recognized for professional accomplishments and significant contributions to their community. Business of the Year is among the categories honored. This annual event offers a review of economic activity from the previous year, as well as future development and significant plans to the business community. Mayor Linda Evans serves as the featured speaker for this event. You can purchase tickets at lqstateofthecity.com. Another exciting opportunity for business this year comes with the Ironman 70.3 Indian Wells La Quinta Triathlon. A letter from Alex Napier, IRONMAN Volunteer Director & Community Liaison, states that an “Athlete Perks” list is being compiled and will be sent to all athletes participating in the event. Businesses will have the opportunity to provide their logo, date range of perks offered, website, and business offering to the Ironman team to be added into their athlete guide and website. Submissions must be in by October 1st. For more information on participating in this program, contact the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce at 760.347.0676. Ray Dominguez is the Sales Manager at Lamar Outdoor Advertising. You can contact Ray for all your outdoor advertising needs at rdominguez@lamar.com or call at 760-834-9453.

City Manager’s Message

NOMINATE AN HONOREE TODAY!

By: Jon McMillen, La Quinta City Manager Hello residents of La Quinta. Heading into September, we see kids returning to school, temperatures beginning to cool down and activity all around us. Our staff is excited for what the year holds and the work we will accomplish this year. Let’s look at some of the projects going on around our city. The IRONMAN Open House Meeting will be held on Thursday, September 19 from 5 pm – 6:30 pm at the La Quinta Wellness Center. The goal of this meeting will be to inform residents of how the IRONMAN 2019 event may impact your commute come race day. The IRONMAN 70.3 Indian Wells La Quinta Race will be held on Sunday, December 8th. The race will start with a 1.2-mile swim at Lake Cahuilla, then a 56-mile bike ride passing by several La Quinta residential communities and will finish with a 13.1-mile run at the Indian Wells Golf Course. IRONMAN representatives and city staff members will be available to answer questions during this open house meeting. For more information about IRONMAN, visit www.laquintaca.gov/IRONMAN . Construction is underway in the La Quinta Village on the Complete Streets Project. This project will construct 5 new roundabouts in the La Quinta Village where pedestrians, bicycle, golf cart, and automobile traffic exists. These roundabouts will help to accommodate non-vehicular traffic. The project is focused on making roadways safer and more accessible to pedestrians, bicycles, and golf carts in the La Quinta Village. Don’t forget to sign up for alerts and stay updated on the project progress at www.lqcompletestreets.com. The SilverRock event site is set to begin construction in September. The event site sits on approximately 14 acres and will include a parking lot, and approximately 8 acres of walking paths, turf, and landscaping. The site will also include a meandering stream with lake and staging area. Construction is anticipated to be completed in March 2020. We are looking forward to an active September in La Quinta as we begin to welcome back families from their vacations, and we prepare for the return of seasonal residents. Be sure to follow us on social media and visit playinlaquinta.com as well as laquintaca.gov to keep up to date on everything going on throughout our Gem of the Desert.

Why You Don’t Want to Miss Your Estimated Tax Payments Submitted by: Michelle Sierra, Staff Accountant, Osborne Rincon CPAs Did you know that you could receive a penalty for not making payments quarterly to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or Franchise Tax Board (FTB)? Your taxes must be paid in line with your income, so if you do not withhold enough on your W-2, you may be required to make estimated tax payments each quarter. Keep in mind if you receive other sources of income such as self-employed income, interest or pensions (just to name a few), you may also be underpaying your taxes. The general rule requiring estimated tax payments to the IRS is as follows: 1. If after subtracting your withholding and credits, you expect to owe at least $1,000 in tax for 2019, and; 2. Your withholdings and credits are expected to be less than 90% of your tax shown on your 2019 return or 100% of the tax shown on your 2018 tax return. To avoid a penalty by the IRS, you have two options: 1. Make all payments by April 15 of the year you are calculating the estimates. 2. Pay four equal payments on April 15, June 15,

September 15, and January 15. If the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday, you may pay on the next business day. Failure to make the required payments timely may result in a penalty even if you receive a refund when the return is filed. California has different requirements. For the FTB, you should make estimated payments if you expect to owe at least $500 in tax for 2019 (after withholdings and credits) and your withholding and credits are to be less than the smaller of 90% tax shown for 2019 or 100% tax shown on your 2018 return. The following is the breakdown of how your estimated tax should be paid to FTB: 30% on April 15; 40% on June 15; 0% on September 15; and 30% on January 15. California requires payments to be made electronically. If at any point your estimates or extension payments exceed $20,000 or your tax liability is over $80,000, a 1% penalty on tax owed will be assessed. Do you want to be sure you are incompliance and find out more about whether or not you are required to make quarterly estimated payments? If so, contact us at Osborne Rincon CPAs at (760) 777-9805. Bryan and Darla Colbert have tried to create a way for local businesses to attract and keep new customers in our seasonal community and now they are introducing the 1Slap App in the Coachella Valley. They started itsLocal.us, LLC to answer the need for fast-paced mobile marketing to reach new and existing customers for local businesses. 81% of Americans use a Smartphone, so your business ad and offer is literally in the palm of your next customer’s hand everywhere, all the time with their new app, 1SLAP, which can be found on the App Store and Google Play. Businesses don’t need a marketing budget to use 1Slap. The goal is to make the entire process easy at a low cost. Users pay on the app and then the

business is paid when the transaction is complete in the store by scanning the users QR Code. A small 10% fee is retained by itslocal.us for the service and the business gets paid with no wait to access the money from 3rd party payment processor). Desert House and Pet Sitting Stacey Browning happily relocated to La Quinta, CA in 2016 after having spent the majority of her life in Sacramento.

the medical field, security and in-home care, Stacey decided to take a sabbatical and focus on herself and her family.

Her business offers pet and housesitting where the sitter comes to your home while you’re away doing either appointments, having a date night, going on vacation or whatever your needs are. We do days, nights, a combination of days and nights, long and short-term stays. We care for all types of pets and breeds and are available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, day or night. Our business is licensed, insured, and bonded. We also have additional services such as grocery, laundry, pharmacy pick-ups and deliveries, and any other errands you may need. Our motto is “We are here to make your life easier.”

In 2016, she embarked on a new journey and moved to La Quinta, originally with the thought of being close to family. She fell in love with the town and its surrounding mountains, year-round weather, people and smalltown feel. She says the people here are warm, friendly, happy and she enjoys the relaxed lifestyle here.

We cater to the La Quinta and Indio areas and will soon expand to the Indian Wells Community as well. We have several excellent references from our clients at Heritage Palms, Trilogy Polo Club, PGA, and The Cove Communities. Stacey has been involved with animals her whole life in one form or another, caring for her own pets (dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits, lizards, and even horses) as well as others’. It was here that she decided to embark on yet another adventure and started her own small business. Her goal is to continue doing what she is doing and expand into physical therapy for animals, along with broader security as well, which she is currently working on now. Stacey’s passion when not working is climbing mountains. She explains it as exciting, a rush of adrenaline, and a challenge. She also enjoys going to the movies, family BBQs at her brother’s house in the Cove, music from the 60’s-70’s era, table tennis, billiards, shuffleboard, cards, dice, and board games. If you would like to set up an appointment or set up a meet and greet, she can be contacted at 916-617-8333.
