As always, the Chamber of Commerce is focused on supporting and uplifting our business community, and finding new ways to encourage growth. Our local chamber is part of a larger regional chamber which has been doing some incredible things across the valley. I’d like to encourage all of you to visit our website, GCVCC. org and see all that is happening to strengthen and lift our local economy It truly is a labor of love and not possible without the involvement of countless committed hands.

For our business community, this is a busy time as we shift into a higher gear for our peak season. Staffing shortages and all-new, ever-changing practices have created challenges for all of us as we strive to deliver high quality service and keep doors open. We are so grateful for the positive support and patient kindness shown by most of our community in this time.

ANDREW DAVIS AND THE LA QUINTA 9/11 MEMORIAL Submitted by: GCVCC Staff Many things come to mind when you visit La Quinta’s Civic Center Park – the beautiful views and its numerous water features to name a few – but you may have missed the memorial that rests at the north side of the park near the La Quinta Library and Calle Tampico. This 9/11 memorial – completed in 2013 – incorporates a piece of steal from Ground Zero, and was the vision of Andrew Davis. Andrew is now 26 years old, and we spoke with him about why he was so passionate as a teenager to create this memorial in La Quinta. When Andrew was 15, he began raising money for the memorial – which took nearly 3 years from 2010 to 2013. He started this because his father was originally supposed to be on one of the fateful 9/11 flights and decided to cancel his flight last minute. He remembered watching the planes hitting the buildings and then the towers fall on the news while next to his mother as she was crying. Little did Andrew know at the time that his mother then believed his father was on the flight. Andrew wanted to have this memorial built to never forget the day our country was attacked and so many innocent lives were lost. Andrew teamed up with Robert Radi, who assisted in securing funding for the steal to be brought from New York to La Quinta as well as helped develop the design.

8

Many others were instrumental in the installation of the memorial such as Warner Boutcher (who supplied the concrete), Greg Gitters from Vintage Nursery as well as the City of La Quinta staff – who worked on the site location and agreed to do the upkeep on the memorial going forward. “The City of La Quinta does an amazing job of the memorial’s upkeep,” said Davis. “I am very proud to have been a part of having it placed at the Civic Center Campus, and am grateful for everyone’s hard work to help build this over the years.”

IN REMEMBRANCE OF 9/11: RALPH PISCITELLI Submitted by: GCVCC Staff On September 11, 2001, we were all rattled to our core – but imagine living in New York City and working near the twin towers? Ralph Piscitelli – the Marketing and Communications Chair of the Alzheimer’s Association and a member of the Board of the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce – was one of those in close proximity to the attacks that day so we asked him to share his experience. “Before I moved to the desert in 2015, I worked on Wall Street as the marketing director of a financial services firm. On 9/11, my office was three blocks from the twin towers. After the first plane hit the towers at 8:40 a.m., we evacuated our building and walked to Grand Central Station – which was 3 miles north. I then took the commuter train to my home in Westchester County. I vividly recall that as people were fleeing the area of the towers, I was seeing first responders, police and firemen running towards the burning buildings to save lives. I was about a mile from the towers when the first building collapsed. Fortunately, everyone from my firm left the area and was safe.

10

I lost several friends who worked at the World Trade Center that day. My brother-in-law worked in the second tower that was hit. He made certain that everyone from his company left their floor and led them to the freight elevator – which took them to the lobby. When they arrived in the lobby, their building was hit by the second plane. As a result of his quick and decisive actions, 45 lives were saved! He was one of the many heroes on 9/11. It’s very important that we never forget what happened on 9/11 – making sure that the younger generation is fully informed about it and that we always protect ourselves and remain safe. During the week following the attack, my phone rang constantly with friends and relatives calling to see if I was ok. Their calls and well wishes made me realize how lucky I am and how precious life is.”

IN REMEMBRANCE OF 9/11: REBECCA RIZZO Submitted by: GCVCC Staff Everyone remembers where they were when they first learned of the 9/11 attacks – and many Americans have a personal story that is connected to that somber day. Our own Rebecca Rizzo – Director of Membership for the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce – shares her personal experience. “My father – Pasqualino Anthony Rizzo – was a long-time employee of the Port Authority in New York City. At the Port Authority, they keep the region moving by air, land, rail and sea so that people and businesses of the region continue to thrive. I did not actually meet my father until after 9/11. My mom and dad were estranged, and I had lost touch with my father. The first time that I visited the 9/11 site was about a year after the attacks. I went to see my mother back east and we went to visit the memorial at Ground Zero. The eternal flame was lit and there was rubble everywhere. When I entered onto the street, there was an energetic feeling that came over me and I knew my biological father was nearby. I turned to my boyfriend, with tears in my eyes, and explained to him that my true father was near. At this point, the last time I had seen my father was when I was two years old. My father and I were reunited when my mother went on a deep dive search to uncover his location. When I spoke to my father at the age of 26, we connected for the first time in 24 years. We cried, and it was then that I found out what he had sacrificed for his family through his career at the Port Authority. He had to uncover his friends’ bodies. For months and months, he worked tirelessly at the site. Because of the hazardous matters he was in contact with at the disaster site, he was exposed to a lot of cancer-causing particles. In the years to follow, we built our relationship and it got stronger. Sadly, I had just gotten to know him when he passed away due to complications associated with 9/11. I am truly grateful for his sacrifices. I think the most important thing to remember about 9/11 is that we were all affected. And if there is one thing that 9/11 his taught me is that you need to find the things that make you happy and hold onto them if you can. I’d like to add that you can never really know the pain that the people around you are experiencing unless you talk to them. It was hard and isolating for my father to go through this. And it was difficult for our family to watch him die because of the sacrifices he made for our nation. I love you Pa, Thank you.”

THE STORY OF LA QUINTA OPENS AT LA QUINTA MUSEUM Submitted by: La Quinta Museum Staff

The La Quinta Museum is excited to welcome you to experience The Story of La Quinta in our newly expanded local history galleries! Our staff has been hard at work to bring you the photos, objects, and fun facts that illuminate the past of our City, from long before it was known as La Quinta to the present day. Newly opened on August 31, 2021, this exhibit encourages you to trace the history of the people that have shaped our corner of the Coachella Valley, from the original stewards of the land, the Cahuilla, to the homesteaders, ranchers, and dreamers looking for a desert oasis. Frequent visitors to the museum will remember our popular local history gallery right next to the museum entrance, where many residents would bring visitors and friends to learn more about our community. Our staff was inspired to expand upon that well-loved exhibit, now moved to our larger upstairs galleries, to share even more of the objects and memorabilia of the archives of the La Quinta Historical Society. Visitors will find familiar favorites, such as our desert animal diorama, featured alongside photos and artifacts that encourage us to see our history—and our part in it-- in a new way. A feature gallery will display changing mini-exhibits that highlight and focus on different aspects of The Story of La Quinta. Our opening mini-exhibit will feature objects from the Kennedy Family Collection, generously donated to the La Quinta Historical Society, that give us a glimpse into the ranch life of this influential La Quinta family.

20

As always, La Quinta Museum complements our local history with enriching traveling and in-house curated cultural exhibits. Currently, in partnership with Exhibit Envoy, we are pleased to present Beauty and the Beast: California Wildflowers and Climate Change through November 13, 2021. This exhibit features exquisite photographs of California’s wildflowers, bringing awareness to the beauty of the Golden State – as well as to the dangers facing our natural habitats from climate change. All geographic regions of California are highlighted in this stunning show, from the high alpine “rock gardens” above 11,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada Mountains to Death Valley National Park’s below-sealevel environment. Beauty and the Beast: California Wildflowers and Climate Change, an exhibition by Rob Badger and Nita Winter, originated at the San Francisco Public Library and is traveled by Exhibit Envoy. The La Quinta Museum is open Tuesday- Saturday, 10am-4pm, and admission and programs are always free. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!
