STAGECOACH COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2017 EMPIRE POLO CLUB 81-800 Avenue 51, Indio, CA 92201
WELCOME TO THE CITY OF FESTIVALS! Welcome to the City of Festivals! Indio is the largest and fastest growing city in eastern Riverside County. As the original Coachella Valley city known as the “Hub of the Valley,” we are continuing our legacy as the center of housing, commerce and development in the region. Nearly 1.4 million people visit our community every year to attend the most famous music, food, and arts festivals in the world. Popular travel site, Trivago, named Indio as a rising global destination and Matador Network ranked Indio as the No. 1 city in the nation for live music. We host the Coachella Valley and Arts Festival, Indio Southwest Arts Festival, Stagecoach Country Music Festival, Indio International Tamale Festival, Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival, and California BBQ State Championship. I am also happy to announce the 2018 Tachevah music festival, previously held in Palm Springs, is coming to downtown Indio in May. Once a Union Pacific Railroad depot, the city of Indio continues to be a destination spot with a small-town feel. We take priority in preserving our local heritage, celebrating our diversity, and showcasing our art. The Coachella Valley History Museum contains the original 1909 School House, Date Museum, and the refurbished M. H. Whittier Ranch Water Tower. You can see our great murals and sculptures throughout our downtown, which celebrates our history and spirit of community. Ranked as one of the Top 20 Best Cities for Young Families in California by Nerdwallet.com, almost 90,000 people call Indio home, and we expect to reach 100,000 in population by 2020 and 170,000 by 2035. Nearly 3,000 new housing units are under construction or being planned in the next few years to accommodate this growth, and we project adding 54,000 residential units by 2035. Families are moving here because of our parks, schools, and outstanding public safety services. In fact, the Indio Police Department was recognized as one of 15 cities in the nation to serve as a model for the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. Our restaurant, retail, hotel, and healthcare service sectors are also growing. Ranked as the #1 city in California to start a business by HowToStartAnLLC. org in 2017, the first Dunkin’ Donuts and Your Pie restaurant in the Coachella Valley opened in Indio last year. A Walmart Neighborhood Market and a farm-to-table restaurant called Heirloom Craft Kitchen will be opening soon. In addition,
a new 14-screen movie theater is coming to Indio and there are new plans proposed for an exciting new project on the Indio Fashion Mall site. To accommodate millions of visitors to our city, a new Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott will be opening this year, and a Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton is currently in planning. I am also excited to welcome Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital to our downtown area, which is opening this year to serve over 135,000 children in the region. There are major infrastructure developments recently completed or planned to keep up with our growth. The new I-10 Jefferson Street interchange is now open and a Highway 111 widening and beautification project will begin this year to give our residents and visitors easier and safer access to our city. The city is working with the Coachella Valley Association of Governments to finalize the route in our community for the CV Link, which is a $76 million multi-model transportation project using the existing Whitewater River Channel that will span more than 50 miles to connect all nine cities and three tribal governments. The path, which allows pedestrians, bicyclists and low-speed electric vehicles, will create a sustainable future and provide significant economic impacts. To further promote a healthy and active lifestyle, a new five-mile hiking trail in north Indio is scheduled to open in the spring with amazing views of the city, Indio Hills, and Joshua Tree National Park. I am excited about our growth and bright future ahead. We welcome you to our beloved City of Indio and I hope you enjoy your time with us!

Attending polo as a spectator has become synonymous with the desert winter lifestyle. Each Sunday, thousands of polo fans pour into Eldorado to feel the rumble of galloping hooves as players reach speeds of more than 35 MPH – all while maintaining control of a little white ball. Polo is, in fact, a contact sport and therefore it is often described as “hockey on horseback.” Players look to score through the uprights at each end of the ten-acre field. It doesn’t take long for first-time attendees to get wrapped up in the excitement of a match as spectators get up to speed with live play-by-play commentary from resident announcer Tony Gregg. Attending a polo match is easy and everyone is welcome to attend. Guests can enjoy the polo sidelines in casual comfort by tailgating. With a few lawn chairs
and a picnic, you have your own perfect polo event. If you prefer to enjoy the spectacle of polo in style, a reservation in the Clubhouse may be more to your liking. Overlooking the main field, guests may enjoy a full-service restaurant and bar, with seating available for parties from two to 100+. The venue is also offered for special events. Eldorado Polo Club is located at 50950 Madison St. Indio between Ave 50 & 52. SUNDAY POLO TAKES PLACE EACH SUNDAY JANUARY 7 THROUGH TO APRIL 1. DESERT HISTORY
Studying the history of the desert region you find many footprints in the sand that created the desert paradise we know today. The Native American people who inhabited the desert region for centuries left their mark on early desert life, including agriculture and water conversation. Early railroad workers laid the groundwork for industry to make its way through the valley and spur the rapid growth of California. Even General George Patton left his mark, training his troops at the Desert Training Center in preparation for what would eventually lead to important victories in Africa and Europe. History is all around you in Indio.

Shields Date
Floyd and Bess Shields came to the California Desert in 1924 and started Shields Date Garden, working long and hard to build up their business and educate their customers about date culture. In the beginning, Mr. Shields would give his lectures in the garden. As the popularity of his lectures grew, Mr. Shields incorporated a slide show, then recorded his presentation in conjunction with the slide show so that the show could be run several times a day. Today, the 15-minute film "Romance and Sex Life of the Date" runs continuously during store hours, where you can still hear Mr. Shields talking about his favorite subject, the date. A testament to its roots, Indio remains synonymous with the date industry. Dates have been a staple food of the Middle East for thousands of years. They are believed to have originated from Iraq, and have been cultivated since ancient times from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt, possibly as early as 4,000 BC. In more recent times, they have found a home in the dry climate and ample sunshine of the Coachella Valley. The Indio area is host to two of the region's most famous date gardens.

Annually it attracts over one million visitors a year to its celebrations of music, culture, art, and food. The diversity shines through in the many elements of society it celebrates, from its International Tamale Festival to the State Championship BBQ Festival, there is a little something for everyone. In 1940 Riverside County purchased the present fairgrounds it now calls home. For over 70 years, the Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival has thrilled people with family fun that includes rides, parades, and shows. Today the Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival is focused on providing amazing entertainment and affordable fun to area residents. RICHARD CURTNER Richard Curtner's artwork writes epic poetry within the visual. For the past 20 years, California artist Curtner has created unique collages for thousands of clients across the country, blending his artistic talents with his passion for the written word. His word collages are created by combining thousands of cutouts of written text all pertaining to a particular theme.
His unique word collages are displayed in museums, galleries (both online and off). They are in publication in international and domestic art magazines, books, and other media. The artist's award-winning creations are prized worldwide by both private and public collectors.
He scours through hundreds of the highest quality magazines searching for colors, words, and phrases. Everything is cut out by hand with an X-Acto knife, glued together carefully, and then varnished. The end result is a distinctive form of artwork in which you can see something different every time you look at it. His works are a "green" art. All the materials come from donated magazines. "It gives the magazines a second life", Curtner explains.

ELIZABETH DUNLOP Working with a variety of artistic mediums in the early days, Elizabeth became fascinated with the high-tech and unique color qualities inherent in dichroic glass – a substance created by NASA during the 1970’s for its light diffusive and thermal diverting qualities. The panoply of interspersed colors and texture effects in dichroic glass greatly appealed to Elizabeth’s creative sensibilities as a unique and appropriate material with which to express her emerging artistic voice.
Dichroic’s interesting and distinctive properties allowed her to stack the glass in many layers to achieve significant visual depth in an essentially two dimensional piece. Her work compels you to look deeply into the piece while observing the changing hues as you move across it – engaging with glass as an organic and almost living medium.
Elizabeth utilizes dichroic glass pieces to compliment the metals, wood, and other components of her creations to interplay and come together in such a way that each piece sparkles with individuality and luminescence. Each work is different and unique with its own special light, characteristics and energy.

Linda Meadows finds inspiration for her handwrought copper jewelry from the southwest, her travels abroad and the years she spent living in Africa. Working exclusively with copper, she uses many techniques and processes. She specializes in copper acid etching, incorporating her hand drawn designs, which add texture to the finished piece. In Fold Forming, (a process she employs for her lighter pieces), the copper will move in the direction of least resistance creating unique designs. Pieces are then finished with a custom patina, metal dyes or left natural. Most of her jewelry contains no less than 8 steps from start to finish.
Her interest working with metal started at a young age, spending time at her father’s side who was a tool and die maker. Linda takes pride in the quality of her popular one-of-a-kind jewelry.

Featured Artist GUNN TRIGERE
Gunn Trigere started off life as an artist making jewelry - sterling silver, hand wrought, one of a kind. Initially she would purchase the stones that would incorporate into her designs, but later got the urge to create her own cabochons, thus being able to control the shape and the color herself. Glass was the answer to her desire. She bought a kiln, glass and all the necessary tools to start on her new venture.
This imbues her work with the subtlety and movement of watercolor, while retaining the richness and depth that is only possible with glass. However, her canvas is glass and the pigments are also glass. In order to make her image permanent it needs to be fired to 1,500 degrees F which usually takes about 20 hours. Often a piece will require two firings sometimes even three.
Now, a few years later she has taken that idea a few steps further and created what she calls “wall jewelery. An extension of her glass cabochons. The same but bigger. Big enough to hang on a wall or rest on a stand or an easel. She approaches each design as if it were a painting on canvas, overlapping colors to achieve a multitude of hues, shapes and patterns.

Within in the heart of Downtown Indio, you will find a group of volunteers that takes preserving the Coachella Valley’s history very seriously. Since 1965, The Coachella Valley History Museum (CVHM) and its army of volunteers has worked hard to collect and maintain that history for all to see. A historical campus, which contains the 1926 adobe Smiley-Tyler House, the historic 1909 Indio Schoolhouse, and the world’s only Date Museum, the history isn’t just on the walls, it’s in them. Other highlights include their Desert Submarine, a Blacksmith's shop, pioneer farming implements and the archives for the Historical Society. Also, the spacious grounds hold a variety of gardens which include a Memorial Date Garden, Japanese Garden, the Geissler Rose Garden, the Jardin del Desierto (Desert Garden) and the Liberty Tree - the oldest Cork Tree in the Coachella Valley. “The valley has such rich history,” says Rebecca Rizzo, a member of the CVHM Board of Trustees. “We want to be able to do more than just tell future generations about it, we want them to be able to see and experience it.” In some cases, that mission includes fighting back the hands of time. Recently, the museum took up the task of restoring one of the iconic pieces of the Indio skyline, the historic 1921 M.H. Whittier Ranch Water Tower, which has been housed at the museum for more than 20 years. Years of exposure to the elements had begun to take a toll on the tower, prompting the museum to embark on a massive fundraising and restoration project that began in 2015. The museum has since raised the money necessary for the capital expenses associated with the project – more than $70,000 – and completed the tedious work of restoration. The Water Tower now sits prominently in the heart of the museum campus and is visible from many directions around Indio. Phase Two of the restoration will include a professional lighting system that will enhance the beauty of the tower and provide security and this phase will be panning out in 2018. The volunteers keep the mission of the Coachella Valley Historical Society alive. They work hard each day to preserve, interpret, and share the artifacts that create a dialogue about the evolving history of the Coachella Valley and invite the public to come and tour the Coachella Valley History Museum and see the remarkable work being done. For more information on the museum, visit cvhm.org.

A UNIQUE ATTRACTION: SHIELDS DATE GARDEN Shields Date Garden is a historic date palm orchard and fascinating tourist attraction unique to Indio. To help promote the exotic, difficult-to-grow fruit, Shields Date Garden entertainingly educates guests on the cultivation of the date in a stunning setting. Also the inventor of date sugar and the date crystal, decadent date shakes and black date ice cream are popular treats sold over the counter at Shields that guests cannot pass up! Floyd and Bess Shields came to the California desert in 1924 and started Shields Date Garden, working long and hard to build up their business and educate their customers about date culture. Today, a 15-minute film, Romance and Sex Life of the Date, shows continuously during store hours, where you can still hear Mr. Shields talking about his favorite subject: the Date. In 2011, William and Lillian Vanderzalm contacted Shields Date Gardens with a wonderful opportunity. The Vanderzalm’s owned a biblical garden in Vancouver, Canada. They had recently sold the property and were looking to relocate the statues to the Palm Springs area. Shield’s horticulture and landscape team then began construction. The Garden was open on a limited basis October 2012 and fully completed October 2013. The garden path winds through their 17-acre date farm. It depicts 14 scenes and includes 23 statues that chronologies Christ’s life. The Date Gardens also feature an outdoor cafe offering breakfast and lunch, specializing in traditional American and Mexican dishes, as well as new twists on old favorites. Guests can expect to find a variety of delicious items including signature salads topped with homemade dressings, sandwiches served on homemade bread, and authentic Mexican cuisine. They understand the importance of serving fresh, high-quality food. The majority of The Cafe's seating is on the outdoor patio boasting fresh white umbrellas, ivory linen covered tables, our rose garden, date palms and mountain views - all creating an experience that feels like a vacation right here at home. After a delicious meal, enjoy a journey through a 17-acre Date Farm. Proceed at your own pace, stopping to reflect and enjoy the beauty.

BOXING OXING CHAMPION BRADLEY TO RETIRE
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Hideki Matsuyama never looks satisfied with his shots or his score, no matter how good they look. Perhaps it will take winning a major to change that. Five days after the 25-year-old Japanese star closed with a 61 to win his sec-
ond World Golf Championship, Matsuyama motored through a dampened Quail Hollow with a 7-under 64 that gave him a share of the lead with Kevin Kisner (67) in the PGA Championship. They were at 8-under 134, all but ending the hopes of Jordan Spieth to get the career Grand Slam this year. Heavy rain that suspended play Friday afternoon made Quail Hollow more
vulnerable than it has been all week, only Spieth couldn’t take advantage. He made only one birdie, finished with a bogey, and shot a 73 to finish 11 shots out of the lead. “I kind of accept the fact that I’m essentially out of this tournament pending some form of crazy stuff the next couple of days,” Spieth said. Kisner faced tougher, faster conditions in the morning and holed a 50-foot eagle putt from short of the green on the par-5 seventh hole. When his round was
over, Kisner had a five-shot lead o players from his side of the draw It didn’t look as though anyon get close. “These guys going out this aft they break 70, they’ve done a h job,” Rory McIlroy said after a put him 10 shots back. imothy Bradley Jr. sat just outside the ring inside his Indio boxing gym last year, unsure if he would ever fight again after he faced Manny Pacquiao for the third time. He had made millions as a five-time world champion. He had taken some hard punches along the way, yet had only lost twice — both times to Pacquiao — the former eight-division world champion Bradley beat in 2012. There was little left to prove. Bradley owned seven houses and had a job as a ringside television commentator. He and his wife have since opened the first of three Hawaiian-style eateries in the Coachella Valley. His financial future was secure, as was his legacy as a professional fighter. “I don’t know if I’m going to continue after this. I don’t know,” Bradley said inside his gym in April 2016, before the third part of his trilogy with Pacquiao. “Right now, I’m fighting this fight. It’s the only fight I’m thinking about. After that, then I’ll see what’s at stake and see if I’ll stick around or not.” Bradley couldn’t have known it at the time, but his eventual loss to Pacquiao, which moved his professional boxing record to 33-2-1, would be his last fight. After more than 15 months of inactivity in the ring, Bradley announced his retirement late Saturday night on Instagram.

Had he not enrolled in Rosemont High School’s summer learning program, the 13-year-old predicts he would have spent his Sacramento summer alone, sleeping in and playing video games. Instead, he took six weeks of publicly-funded classes in entrepreneurship and slam poetry. He learned how to box and picked up tips that should ease his transition to the upper grades. And he started a community project to raise awareness about racism.

COSTA MESA, Calif. - It’s been a long time since defensive tackle Brandon Mebane won a game in his hometown of Los Angeles. “Oh wow, probably like, man, like ‘02 or something like that,” Mebane said, going all the way back to his senior season at Crenshaw High School. When his stellar college career at California ended with an

0-4 record at UCLA and Southern California, and with no hope in sight of the NFL returning to his hometown, Mebane assumed he would never again play in front of friends and family. That will change Sunday, when Mebane’s Los Angeles Chargers play their first preseason game since moving north from San Diego. “It’s very exciting to be back home and playing in Los Angeles and very fun, very fun,” Me-
bane said. “I didn’t think LA would have any teams. The only teams I thought they would ever have was UCLA and USC as far
as football.” From the #1 rated NPR show, Mebane will see plenty of familiar faces, in the stands and “Wait Wait...Dont Tell Me!” on the opposing sideline with

AN AWARD WINNING CITY
It’s easy to see why over 1.4 million people flock to Indio every year. With world-renowned festivals, amazing food and views that take your breath away, the rest of the world has taken note of this Southern California paradise. Recent times have seen Indio receive some serious recognition as the place to be in California. Many cities make claim be a haven for music festivals, but Indio truly reigns supreme when it comes to national recognition. Matador Network recently named Indio as the “#1 city in the US for live music” with festivals like Coachella, Stagecoach and the International Tamale Festival, it’s no wonder Indio comes out on top. Indio steps up their game again this year by adding in Tachevah to their block party and continuing with events like the Rhythm Wine & Brews Experience. Toss in the fact that Trivago recently named Indio as a “Top Emerging Travel Destination” and a visit to Indio is a sure thing. The festivals will bring you to the city, but there’s a good chance you may find yourself quickly wanting to settle down and call

Indio home. Indio was recently named a “Top 20 Cities for Young Families in California” by nerdwallet.com and a “Top 100 Best Communities for Young People” by America’s Promise Alliance. This all adds up quickly when you see that Indio High School’s have a 95% graduation rate, which shows a true focus on the future of this vibrant community. Top it off with Indio Police Department being named as 1 of 15 law enforcement agencies in the nation as a model for the President's task force on 21st Century policing. Indio truly is a community of the future.

GALLERY HOMES BUILDING A BRIGHT FUTURE IN THE CITY OF INDIO In late December 2017, as a stunning sunset was closing another busy day of finishing touches by the Gallery Homes construction team, preparing for the Grand Opening at Gallery at Whittier Ranch in Indio; Gallery Homes Founder and CEO, Rick Hauser, reflected on his Company’s vision for the city of Indio. “After meeting with City management and hearing firsthand their progressive vision of how they are moving forward - improving the Coachella Valley’s perception of Indio, repairing and adding infrastructure, creating a positive experience for both commercial and residential developments, bringing better and higher paying jobs to the area, and expanding their already robust festival activity levels - I directed my Gallery Team to make it a top priority to bring our new Indio communities to market as quickly as possible.” Mr. Hauser went on to say, “In my 30+ years in the building industry, I can’t remember being more excited about the direction of a City, as I am with Indio. Because of this positive direction, Gallery Homes has five new Indio communities in various stages of planning and development, and we are

looking at additional development opportunities to take advantage of different aspects of the market opportunities. Our future certainly looks bright in the City of Indio.” Launched in 2001, Gallery Homes quickly became one of Southern California’s premiere home builders by building award-winning communities throughout the Southern California region. To accomplish this, Gallery searched for the finest locations in thriving communities, and built spacious homes with breathtaking designs, including bright airy interiors and exceptional customizing options. Gallery’s legendary reputation for creating beautiful neighborhoods is well-deserved. Gallery focuses on small, intimate neighborhoods which allows the Gallery Team to interact with every buyer on a first name basis. “This kind of highly personalized service accentuates our goal to make your new Gallery home uniquely your own, in every way that captures your individual dreams” says Mr. Hauser. “We build every Gallery Home as if it were our own personal home.” Gallery Homes • 951.244.7713 • GalleryHomes.Info

O ur L ady of p erpetual h elp C ATHOLIC C HURCH, S CHOOL A PART OF INDIO’S HISTORY Begun as a Franciscan Mission in 1928, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Indio acquired the status of a full parish community in 1937. That same year, the church’s pastor, Fr. Patrick Kenny, built the first church, but, by the 1950’s, the community’s expanding number of families had outgrown it. In 1960, the present church was completed and dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
EDUCATING LEADERS Seeing a need for faith-based education, the academic arm of the church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School, opened its doors in 1951. Over half of a century later, the rich tradition experienced by many of the adult residents of Indio who attended OLPH in their childhood continues to enrich the lives of the Preschool through 8th grade students attending today.
AN EXCITING FUTURE 2018 promises new and highlyanticipated developments for the church and school, including a growing computer sciences and technology program in the school curriculum and a brand new 20,000 sq. ft. Parish Center, Multi-Purpose Hall, and Preschool building. Call us to Enroll or Donate! OLPH Church: (760)347-3507 OLPH School: (760)347-3786 OLPH Preschool:(760)775-3477

Here’s proof that you can get award-winning care without ever leaving town. HEALTH CARE AS IT SHOULD BE isn’t defined by awards and rankings: It’s about making sure our patients get the best possible care. But national recognition from respected sources is definitely a reflection of our high standards and commitment to our patients. This year, we are proud to receive U.S. News & World Report’s “high performing”designation in all 9 critical categories, ranging from lung cancer surgery to hip and knee replacements. We are one of only 48 hospitals nationally that swept the table, with “top”ratings in all types of care. What’s more, we ranked #1 in the Inland Empire area! Of course, the greatest honor of all is patient satisfaction, and earning the trust of those we serve.
