This is it… this is why we live here in La Quinta. The heat has lifted and “winter like” temperate weather has finally arrived. We can finally hike, bike, golf, play tennis and pickle ball without the threat of heat exhaustion. This is the most magical time of the year in La Quinta.
Did you know Irving Berlin is said to have written “White Christmas” while relaxing by the pool at the La Quinta Resort in December of 1937? The song was later recorded by Bing Crosby and released on December 24, 1941 – and it went on to become a huge hit. Bing, a golf enthusiast, was enamored with our beautiful desert scape as well. He often broadcast his radio show from Palm Springs; and later went on to develop the Blue Skies Village in Rancho Mirage – the name an homage to another of his award-winning songs. Elvis Presley penned his own version of “White Christmas” here amidst the palm trees and blazing sun.
Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland, both regulars in the Palm Springs socialite scene, brought “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to life on the silver screen in “Meet Me in St. Louis.” While Mel Torme and Nat King Cole (then a resident of what is now Vista Las Palmas and regular performer at the Chi Chi in Palm Springs) made “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” a true classic.
Gene Autry, known for his desert cowboy movies, created and sang several children’s holiday classics. The success of “Here Comes Santa Clause” (which he wrote) prompted Autry to then record “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Classic and timeless, I can’t imagine a family holiday celebration without them. It just goes to show how rich, in history and musical collaboration, our great Valley is.
On that note, let’s all ring in the holidays with a few fun local events that are sure to get you into the spirit. The weather is beautiful this December, so come on out to hear a few of the classic holiday songs written right here at the City of La Quinta’s “Tree Lighting” on December 2nd.
Also, don’t miss taking a leisurely stroll to the “Farmers Market” in Old Town (Sundays - closed on Christmas Day), or peruse some creations at the “Art on Main” on December 10th.

Paint Your Own Pottery
Create custom holiday gifts by painting your own pottery at Old Town Artisan Studios. There is a large inventory of pottery options with a vast selection of pieces from Santa mugs to ceramic ornaments. All materials are supplied so simply choose your item, paint your unique design with underglazes and pick it up in 7-10 business days once it is done being fired in the kiln. Available Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last seating at 3:30. Call ahead if making reservations for parties of 4 or more people. All ages are welcome, but adult supervision is required for ages 12 and under. Cost is determined per piece, with most items being in the $15-$20 range.

Creation Station Gingerbread Contest
Local youth are encouraged to enter the 3rd Annual Creation Station Gingerbread Contest by December 12 for the chance to win prizes in the following age divisions: Beginning Builder – ages 7 and under; Junior Builder – ages 8 to 17; and Master Builder – ages 18 and older. Categories include Traditional Gingerbread Houses, Fictional Inspired Gingerbread, Famous Landmarks and Works of Art. Creation Station is La Quinta’s MakerSpace program in partnership with the City of La Quinta and the Riverside County Library System. This program is located inside of the La Quinta Public Library and is for hobbyists, students and educators. Email contest forms and photos to lqmakerspace@laquintaca. gov. Kitchen Pail Welcome Kit
SB 1383 establishes targets to achieve a 75 percent reduction of the statewide disposal of organic waste by 2025. Organic waste includes both food waste and other green waste, such as yard trimmings. Effective January 1, 2022, all California residences and businesses will be required to separate organic waste from other trash and non-organic recyclables participating in an organics collection program. Burrtec is working with its cities including La Quinta to provide programs for residents and businesses to comply with the requirements of this legislation in 2022. Gingerbread Lane
Each year, Old Town Artisan Studios converts their 3-acre art campus into Gingerbread Lane – a winter wonderland with dazzling displays, trimmed garland, twinkling lights, and a marquee 17-foot tree next to the signature Holiday Cottage.
From the moment guests walk through the gates, they enter a magical world of gingerbread delights. This special event features gingerbread cookies and hot cider in the culinary area, cookie decorating and clay ornament painting in the craft section, and scheduled performances by local community groups.

The Holiday Cottage is decked out for families to visit and take photos. All day, activities are scheduled to keep attendees entertained. Live performances include seasonal music, dancing and more by youth organizations from the Coachella Valley.
Gingerbread Lane has been the dream and brainchild of Old Town Artisan Studios founder, Victory Grund.
“The mission for this family event is to bring back the joy of giving through the holidays by creating handmade gifts for family and friends,” said Grund. “When a person of any age creates a gift by hand for loved ones, it becomes a treasure that grows more valuable with each passing year. The personal expression gives meaning to each piece of art.”
This magical event will be held select Saturdays this month: December 3rd, 10th & 17th. Festivities will be held from 126pm. The event is free and open to the public.

What You’ll Find at Gingerbread Lane
Meet Santa and Mrs. Claus
Come see Santa and Mrs. Claus each Saturday. Santa will be available for photos inside his cottage and to hear Christmas wishes. Mrs. Claus will be sharing holiday stories, demonstrate how to decorate gingerbread cookies, and many other exciting activities during the event.
Art Activities
Artists of all ages and levels can paint handmade clay gingerbread ornaments. These clay creations are made onsite in the ceramics studio by volunteers. Children can also make art on artist easels and paint a rock to add to the Inspirational Rock Stream at Old Town Artisan Studios.
Gingerbread Cookie Decorating
Get into the holiday spirit by decorating freshbaked gingerbread cookies made by La Quinta High School’s Culinary Department students. Complimentary hot apple cider will also be available to enjoy, as well.
Live Musical Performances
Old Town Artisan Studios comes alive with a variety of guest performances by Coachella Valley youth. Among this year’s talent will include Time 2 Twirl, Natasha Terrell, Coachella Acapella, Party of 4, Dance Dimensions, Desert Recreation District Ballet Dancers and many more.

Happy holidays!
As we roll toward the end of 2022, we do so with a variety of holiday-themed events the whole family can enjoy.
But first is the return of the IRONMAN 70.3-mile triathlon on Sunday, December 4, which brings thousands of athletes, their families and supporters to La Quinta for the one-day event.
The race takes place from 7 a.m. to about 3:30 p.m., starting with a 1.2-mile swim at Lake Cahuilla. From there, athletes bike 56 miles through La Quinta, Thermal then on to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, where they finish with a 13.1-mile run through the Indian Wells Golf Resort and tennis garden. Cyclists will be using the same route as 2021.
Businesses will be open as usual.

CITY UPDATES
Jefferson Street / Highway 111 Intersection
Improvements
The City of La Quinta and City of Indio are partnering on this road rehabilitation project at the Highway 111 and Jefferson Street intersection. Construction is scheduled to begin in December, after IRONMAN, and be completed by end of the year. Indio is the lead agency on this project with jurisdiction over a larger area of the intersection. The entire stretch of Jefferson Street is scheduled for slurry and seal in the spring.
Moon River Drive Pavement Rehabilitation
About 800 feet of Moon River Drive, from Avenue 50 to the Desert Sands Unified School District right-of-way, is scheduled for a major overhaul to include pulverization of existing roadway, overlay and striping. The work will be done December 19-30 when the schools are closed for winter break.
Blackhawk Way Crosswalk
Reconstruction of the asphalt crosswalk between the La Quinta High School and La Quinta Park with concrete pavement will include the curb ramps and sidewalk to bring to current code, relocating the current rapid flash beacons onto compliant traffic signal poles and replacing the in-roadway warning lights system. The work will be done December 1930 when the high school is closed for winter break.
Landscape Renovation Improvement
The landscape renovation contractor will be starting the Desert Club, Sierra Del Rey and Marbella developments around the first of December.
Dune Palms Bridge
Construction is scheduled to start in January on the allweather bridge at Dune Palms Road, over the stormwater channel, with expected completion in November 2024. Dune Palms will remain open during construction and a bypass lane will be constructed so the bridge can be built one half at a time.

La Quinta Baking Company Now Serving Dinner 5 Nights a Week
La Quinta Baking Company is a European-inspired bistro located at the southwest corner of Washington Street and Highway 111. Known for serving breakfast and lunch in La Quinta for decades, the restaurant has now expanded to offer dinner and happy hour five nights per week from Tuesday through Saturday.
Using authentic French recipes, La Quinta Baking Company makes fresh-baked breads, breakfast pastries and desserts in-house by highly-skilled pastry chefs and bakers. All are made from scratch at the crack of dawn daily. “We’re constantly told there is no place in the desert you will find more authentic French croissants,” said Kim Gower, owner of La Quinta Baking Company.
Kim and her husband, Mark, had always dreamed of owning a restaurant, so when the opportunity to purchase La Quinta Baking Company captured their attention, the couple made the move to La Quinta from Orange County to acquire this popular bistro that has been a cornerstone of the community and beloved by countless customers for over 30 years.
The Gowers expanded the restaurant space, adding 1,600 square feet of additional seating plus a full bar with a largescreen TV. This made the move to offering happy hour and dinner service a no-brainer, so they began opening from 3:30 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday in September of this year. “Our dinner service has been really well received so far,” Mark added. “And we have happy hour discounts from 3:30-5:30 so people can come and hang out at our bar, enjoying drinks and some of our popular starters like French Dip Sliders, Shrimp Scampi, Bruschetta and our flatbreads.”

Local Skateboarder with Memorial
X Park Grand Opening Honors
MEADOWS Remembering Local Skateboarder JOHN
Landscaping and construction of La Quinta’s competition level extreme sports complex are completed and on Saturday, October 22, the City held a community grand opening celebration at the X Park.
The $4.6 million facility with pro shop, three bowls, pump and modern street tracks and more is situated on the southeast corner of Dune Palms Road and Westward Ho Drive, across from the high school.
The ceremony was also an opportunity to remember La Quinta High School graduate, John Meadows, whose impact on the lives he touched through his passion for skateboarding continues long after his death on February 16, 2015, at age 22.
John’s family and friends have kept his memory alive by leaving broken skateboard pieces and other small mementos at La Quinta Park, where he loved to skate.
Now, at the north end of the X Park is a permanent memorial to John that includes a bronze plaque dedicated to “our concrete angel,” in front of the “board yard” where skaters can discard broken pieces of skateboards.
“While this informal memorial at La Quinta Park is very special, the City wanted to erect a more permanent memorial in John’s honor here at the X Park,” Mayor Linda Evans said during the grand opening celebration.
“We hope the memorial serves as a reminder of an exceptional person who was passionate about helping others, being everyone’s best friend, and making himself unforgettable,” Evans said.
A Mother’s Gratitude for a Memorial Honoring Her Son
The memorial lets John’s mother, Farah Ortega-Choate, a teacher at La Quinta Middle School, know her son is not forgotten.
“As a mother, your greatest fear is that something will happen to one of your children,” Ortega-Choate said.
When that does happen, your new greatest fear is that your child will be forgotten, she said.
“It has been a little over seven years and eight months since my son, John Meadows, was called home and gained his wings. It has been my fear every day since I received the tragic news that his memory, his legacy would be forgotten,” Ortega-Choate said.
The memorial at La Quinta Park has been a “beautiful tribute that I have witnessed grow over the years,” she said.
“On behalf of myself, my son Brandon (Meadows), my parents and family, thank you for continuing to keep John noticed,” Ortega-Choate said.
The 31,000-square-foot X Park was designed by Spohn Ranch based on input from skaters and BMXers of all ages who live in La Quinta and neighboring communities.
The park is managed by Action Park Alliance, with experienced staff on site at all times.

The Story of in La Quinta
In 2018, IRONMAN, a Wanda Sports Holdings company, announced the addition of the IRONMAN® 70.3® Indian Wells-La Quinta triathlon in Southern California. While there were traffic issues that caused La Quinta residents some headaches in its first year, there have been a number of improvements including advanced communications about the traffic plan and road closures. This year, signage began as early as mid-November to inform drivers about road closures that will happen when IRONMAN returns to La Quinta on Sunday, December 4. In addition, a system for news and alerts has been set up and can be accessed by texting ‘IWLQ’ to 888-777. A community helpline is also available by calling (760) 610-6765.

Why La Quinta?
According to race director, Danial James, the IRONMAN team was interested in bringing a race to La Quinta because of the unique experience offered in this community. They began talks with Indian Wells and La Quinta, and were excited to learn that the interest was mutual.
“La Quinta is an active lifestyle city that attracts top athletes in many sports,” said Linda Evans, Mayor of La Quinta. “We are thrilled to host triathletes of the IRONMAN 70.3 and share the energy of La Quinta with them.”
The IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon held locally begins with a 1.2-mile swim in Lake Cahuilla. The 56-mile single-loop bike course route will then take athletes on rural roads. Finally, a two-loop 13.1mile run traverses from the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens over to the Indian Wells Golf Resort.
“Lake Cahuilla, through our partnership with the Coachella Valley Water District and Riverside County Parks, is often ranked as one of our more
popular lake swims on the circuit,” explained James. “Additionally, the mountain vistas that our bike course provides are unparalleled, as are the streets lined with date palms. When you ride 56 miles on a bike, these inspiring views matter.”
Since the race began, James added that the City of La Quinta has been an invaluable partner in producing what they consider to be one of their premier races in North America.
Benefits to the Community
While there are a few traffic inconveniences the day of the event, La Quinta does receive benefits by hosting a race of this magnitude in the community.
“IRONMAN is one of more than 200 world-class events held here throughout the year,” said Joyce Kiehl, director of communications for Visit Greater Palm Springs. “These events not only help shape community identity, but also support our local restaurants and businesses.”
James adds, “We appreciate that over the years, the local community has embraced the event by continuing to show their support for athletes looking to extend their racing seasons closer to the end of the year.”

Michelle’s Swim & Denim Washington Park Spotlight:
A new shop on the scene in the Washington Park shopping center brings a hip and stylish selection of swimwear, denim and more to La Quinta – making it a great stop on your quest for the perfect gifts when you are doing your holiday shopping.
Owner Michelle Cicalese had been selling swimwear online for years. Then she had a small location in Indio that allowed her to warehouse her inventory, and she saw shoppers by appointment only. She evolved to begin selling children’s swimwear – and as her following grew –it became clear she needed a boutique to showcase her vision.
She opened Michelle’s Swim & Denim in June 2022, selecting a retail space near Trader Joe’s, Fresh Juice Bar and other businesses she knew were a draw to that area.
“I felt La Quinta is the next big area of tourism,” explained Cicalese. “It’s located near tennis events, concerts and golf. Plus, it’s not far from my home so I can be closer to my family.”
Cicalese has been in the desert for 24 years, moving out from a small town in Wisconsin. After following her dream
of always wanting to live in California, it’s not surprising that beachwear featuring a number of California brands is one of her specialties.
Michelle’s carries a good selection of matching “mommy and me” swimwear including identical flip flops for moms and their little ones. The store also has plus size swimwear, men’s swim trunks, designer floral prints from Columbia, and a quality brand from Australia called Sea Folly -- which has more modest styles which appeal to different ages.
“We’re seeing a lot of reversible swimsuits, and some that are embroidered with a lot of detail work,” added Cicalese. “We are one of the few stores in Southern California that carries hot brands like Agua Bendita and Maaji, as well as flip flops that have arch support called Archies.”
Beyond swimwear, Michelle’s features Z Supply – which makes soft pajamas and lounge wear – with holiday and winter styles now arriving. She also has embroidered denim including brands like Joe’s and Driftwood along with a big selection of Havianas and Malvados flip flops.
