Brokerage Ohhh October, how we love you. It’s time to venture back outside, take in some of our local art culture or spend a day at one of our many beautiful parks. Invite your neighbors, make new friends, and take advantage of all that our great city has to offer. There are a myriad of adventures waiting for you here in La Quinta. The Coachella Valley has historically been shaped by a diverse artist culture. This love of art and commitment to supporting local artists can be seen in the various art galleries and at the many art shows that are held here each year. This wonderful philosophy is embraced in the City of La Quinta as well via the Art in Public Places Program. The Program helps our city acquire and maintain various art installations that are strategically located citywide for everyone to enjoy. For detailed information on the numerous exhibits you can visit the City of La Quinta’s website. Another historic area worth venturing to is Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park. It is located just 6 miles South East of Old Town La Quinta and offers a delightful day or overnight experience in the Coachella Valley. Activities include fishing, horseback riding trails, and open grass areas with barbeques for picnics and special events. The 91 individual and group campsites there make Lake Cahuilla a fantastic weekend staycation getaway as well. Additional outside fun can also be found at one of the upcoming events at our many parks here in La Quinta. For all you foodies out there, I highly recommend that you don’t miss the Street Food Cinema at La Quinta Park, October 6 from 5:30 pm -10:00 pm. There you can view pop culture films on a 50 foot screen and enjoy a variety of food truck fare. Also, in Old Town La Quinta on Sunday mornings you can visit the Certified Farmer’s Market from 8:00 am – 12:30 pm for an assortment of fresh produce, flowers, cheese, and more.

LA QUINTA FITNESS COURT Submitted by: GCVCC Staff

National Fitness Campaign (NFC) is a social enterprise dedicated to building healthy communities around the world by building world-class fitness courts in public spaces. Their goal is to provide free fitness spaces in hope of breaking down barriers to fit lifestyles and to change health outcomes. The NFC campaign for healthy lifestyles began in 1979 when Founder Mitch Menaged invented the original Fitness Court in San Francisco with the support of Wells Fargo Bank. The first courts were initially launched at Stanford University and in San Francisco. Between 1980 and 1990, National Fitness Campaign expanded to over 4,000 communities around the world. Partnerships with more than 100 corporate sponsors helped raise over $100 million in the United States, Canada and Australia. Obesity is a common, serious and costly issue throughout the world. By 2012 the obesity rate had reached an alarming 40% of American adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the prevalence of obesity affected about 93.3 million US adults in 2015 and 2016. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer that are some of the leading causes of preventable, premature death. In response to the increasing obesity rates, Mitch Menage returned and assembled a world-class team to reinvent NFC Fitness Courts for the 21st century. The NFC team includes Mark Lauren, Sam Lucente, Phil Ginsburg and Gadi Amit. The Fitness Court is a powerful way to encourage healthy 10 | GCVCC.ORG

activity and promote community wellness. With each national campaign, NFC gives back a share of their profits to selected partners in under-served communities. They believe that every individual deserves access to best-in-class facilities to improve their personal well-being. The American-made Fitness Court is an adaptable outdoor bodyweight circuit training system, crafted as civic art and designed for adults of all ages and ability levels. It is the world’s best outdoor gym, featuring high intensity seven movement circuit-training routines, challenges and classes. The new fitness court is also part of a digital community ecosystem. The Fitness Court App is designed to be a coach in your pocket, with programming and challenges that are digitally delivered through the latest technology platforms for both Apple and Android. Not only does the app act as a coach with programming and challenges, but also allows you to track results. The addition of technology turns neighborhoods, cities, and entire states into virtual and ever-expanding outdoor gyms. La Quinta has partnered with National Fitness Campaign by demonstrating that health and wellness is a priority for residents, business and tourists. The city has been selected to join hundreds of cities in bringing The Fitness Court to local parks and trails in 2018. The Fitness Course allows users to follow circuit-training system that includes seven movements: core, squat, push, lunge, pull, agility and bend. Each station also has four progressive training options: easy, medium, hard and expert. There is no cost to use the facility and the app is free in the AppStore and Google Play. The Fitness Court opening in La Quinta is being funded partially through a grant received from NFC and partially through the city’s parks equipment replacement fund. The city’s Facilities department will be maintaining this outdoor recreation site at La Quinta Park (across from La Quinta High School, corner of Blackhawk Way and Adams Street). Everyone is welcome to attend the La Quinta Fitness Court Launch Party on Saturday, October 20 at 9:00 – 10:30 am. Attendees will hear from City Leaders and NFC Founder Mitch Menage, enjoy guided orientation through the circuits and familiarization with the app, and have an opportunity to participate or watch the Mayor’s Fitness Court Challenge. Once the new fitness court is open, the City will reach out to fitness groups and contract instructors to schedule additional programming at this site. La Quinta is dedicated to free health & wellness options for all residents and visitors.

Now that you’re ready to fish, plan an upcoming weekend on the lake. Don’t forget to sit back and take in the views. Lake Cahuilla is one of the most scenic fishing spots you’ll find. Here are a few must haves for your next fishing trip to Lake Cahuilla.

TAKE A HIKE – FISHING IN LAKE CAHUILLA

Submitted By: GCVCC Staff Located on the south side of La Quinta and surrounded by the Santa Rosa Mountains you will find Lake Cahuilla. The recreation area offers many activities for an active explorer, including fishing. According to rivcoparks. org kids can get their fishing permits for just $4 and adults $6, a state fishing license is required. According to fishingnetwork.net, the lake is stocked with rainbow trout in the winter and catfish during the summer by DFW and county hatcheries. Bass, bluegill and carp can also be found in the lake. Locals report the best spot to fish is near the campgrounds where the fish tend to swim in schools. Once you get your lines in the water, you will want to make sure you have the right bait. Some have reported success using garlic bait. Garlic bait can be purchased packaged in most sporting goods stores that stock fishing gear, or you can add it to your own bait recipe. The strong smell and flavor are great for drawing in fish!

CITY MANAGER’S MESSAGE By: Frank J. Spevacek, La Quinta City Manager Greetings La Quinta residents! As we look ahead to increased activities during the upcoming holiday season, it’s a great to think about safety. Additional information about Fire Prevention Week will be available at an informational table inside City Hall October 1 through 5. Finally, CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Training Classes will be held at City Hall October 19 through 21. The program is 20 hours and is free to attend. On the business front, the City is looking to engage contractors, residents, and business owners regarding the current building permit process. A survey is currently available on the City’s website. This information will be used to develop workshops to encourage active communication, and a forum for discussion with all who are in building in the City. Finally, an update on some of the active projects around La Quinta. CLINICAL STUDY FOR NEW MEDICATION FOR PLAQUE PSORIASIS Submitted by: Dr. Timothy Jochen, board certified dermatologist and founder of Contour Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that affects approximately 7.5 million Americans. It occurs when skin cells that begin growing deep in the skin rise to the surface in a matter of days rather than in about month, as is typical. Psoriasis can cause swelling and patches of thick, red skin covered by silvery scales, as well as dry skin that is prone to cracking, pitted fingernails, and burning, itchy skin. In severe cases, pus-filled blisters could form on red patches of skin. Psoriasis can occur anywhere on the body, but it usually appears on the elbows, knees, scalp, lower back, face, palms, and soles of the feet. Some people may have psoriasis on their fingernails, toenails, genitals, or inside the mouth. Approximately 33 percent of psoriasis cases are inherited. Sometimes the condition may worsen when triggered by infection, stress, injury, smoking, cold weather, heavy alcohol consumption or certain medications. There are several types of psoriasis, but the most common is plaque psoriasis. If you or a loved one has plaque psoriasis, you have the opportunity to be considered for participation in a clincial study in the Coachella Valley this fall for a new oral medication that may help better manage your condition. This study is a Phase III study – the final step before FDA approval. This study is open to men and women 18 years and older with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. The trial will study the drug vs. placebo vs. comparator. At week 16, placebo patients will be switched to the study drug. Study participants receive free medical care for their psoriasis study visits and a small stpidend for their time and transportation. There also is an ongoing plaque psoriasis registry study that tracks the standard of care for psoriasis patients who are interested in participaing in this and qualify. The most common treatments for plaque psoriasis currently include: • Toppical steroids such as Clobetasol • Oral medications • XTRAC laser • Biologic injectables such as methotrexate and adalimumab

Eczema also is a common skin condition affecting more than 35 million Americans – 1 to 3 percent of adults and 10 to 20 percent of children. Coachella Valley adults and children 12 and older with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) can also have the opportunity to particpate in a clinical study for a new oral medication for eczema. HOW ART IMPROVES THE LIVES OF ATRISK CHILDREN & TEENS

Submitted By: Artist at Heart Staff There are numerous scientific studies that demonstrate art having a positive impact physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Visual arts, such as painting and drawing, are proven to have positive affects on youth that are facing difficult challenges in their lives. Painting can unlock communication for teens that have shut others out. “Teens who abuse substances are trying to escape feelings. That disconnects you from your body. Expressing who they are, without words, can lead to authentic connection with self. Furthermore, this allows them to make authentic connections with others.” says Kristin Wilson, MA, LPC, Director of Clinical Research at Newport Academy.

Research demonstrates that at-risk students who have access to the arts, in or out of school, tend to have: • better academic results • greater likelihood of college enrollment • increased self-esteem and resiliency • better workforce opportunities • improved emotional intelligence • more civic engagement, such as voting and volunteering • better sense of self-control • reduced depression and anxiety • better socialization • stronger sense of identity Creative arts provide pathways to positive self-expression and can be a valuable coping mechanism. Foster children are often overlooked when it comes to providing creative arts for local youth. Voices for Children is a non-profit organization that provides CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for foster children in Riverside County. VFC is working on ways to provide access to the arts for foster youth in their program. For more information about how you can sponsor art lessons or supplies for a foster child, contact Tina Escobar – Artist at Heart (760) 784-5517 or visit www. artistatheart.net

study, doing school work, and quietly begin their day sharing thoughts with their peers. Manager Edward Kabata noted that this is the daily behavior of students at his store. On to Carl’s Jr. where owner Karl Karcher and marketing chief Kelly Karcher interacted with students and community members, reminding everyone that this is a neighborhood restaurant that welcomes the students who are daily customers. Located just minutes from the school, the Karchers, like Edward at Coffee Bean, praised the students who frequent the restaurant for their responsible behavior as consumers. Each Bailey & Coffee event grew in size and this one had the largest number of students who took advantage of the opportunity to interact with the superintendent and other senior staff members from the district. DSUSD Board Member Michael Duran encouraged the planning team for Bailey & Coffee to hold a Saturday event for people not able to participate in the early morning weekday events. So it was off to Dunkin Donuts in Indio. At this event, younger children stopped by for that chocolate donut and a change to talk to their principals’ boss. Another success.

The year ended at IW Coffee in Indian Wells. The morning of a school board meeting meant that a number of staff members and community supporters stopped by to discuss issues set for that night’s agenda. The coffee house was bursting at the seams and owner Merwyn Tyer noted later that the new customers became regulars adding another benefit to the Bailey & Coffee community program. And we can’t forget bringing Bailey & Coffee to Amistad High School to partner with their already successful drive-through coffee days for parents called the Eagle Express. Superintendent Bailey joined Principal David Gustafson and his team as they handed coffee and pastries to parents and family members dropping their students off at the school. This will be the third year of Eagle Express and Bailey & Coffee will find the superintendent again handing out a cup and a thank you to the school’s supportive parents. On to this year and a chance to refill that cup of coffee. Community members are invited to again join Superintendent Scott Bailey and his team for conversation and coffee from 7:00-8:00 am at the following locations:

BAILEY & COFFEE—SECOND CUP Submitted By: DSUSD Staff

What began as a way to share a morning cup of coffee with community members, has turned into a new tradition within Desert Sands Unified School District. Partnering with coffee shops across the district, DSUSD Superintendent Scott Bailey, sits down with a cup of coffee at 7:00 am and begins chatting with students, family members, staff, and the general community. Members of local law enforcement and elected officials often attend, as well. For an hour he and his team engage in dialogue about school affairs, and take note of time that require follow-up. At the very first Bailey & Coffee in September 2017 at SIP Coffee House in Indio, a student and her mother told the superintendent about an idea the middle school girl had to help kids in Mexico following a devastating earthquake. The conversation turned into action as Nelly and her mom collected backpacks and supplies. Her efforts were so impressive that the Mexican consulate flew the two of them to a distribution site near Mexico City so that Nelly could see firsthand how her work helped so many. Next stop was Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in La Quinta where adults stopping by the location for the very first time witnessed the morning ritual of many La Quinta High School students who enjoy their breakfast while holding Bible

DOES YOUR PET NEED HEALTH INSURANCE?

Submitted By: Carrie Babij, President of Desert Insurance Solutions If you have a pet, take a moment to consider how much you would pay to save it from a life-threatening condition. If that number is so high you wouldn’t feel comfortable writing a check for it, you should learn more about pet insurance. Veterinarians can do some amazing things today with medical technology borrowed from the human world, but it comes at a cost. According to the Wall Street Journal dog ACL treatment used to cost $1,200 but new and improved plate insertion costs $4,500. And NBC recently reported on dog Jack who got laser eye surgery ($5,000) and dog Klover who had tennis balls removed from his

fins up, paddles up USAPICKLEBALLNATIONALS.COM stomach ($2,700). Klover later developed some complications which required a second surgery ($6,980). Pet insurance is health insurance for pets. It’s less expensive if the pet is young. It generally reimburses 70-90% of expenses with an annual limit of $2,500$15,000. Deductibles range from $100-$500. Like human health insurance, pet insurance provides a contracted volume discount on service prices from providers. “Sweat the big stuff” by considering high deductibles and high limits for pet insurance, and any other type of insurance for that matter. Some critics say pet insurance isn’t a great deal financially because if your pet is generally healthy you’ll end up paying more in premiums than you would have in vet bills. That’s like saying fire insurance isn’t a great deal financially because if your house is generally fire-free you’ll end up paying more in premiums than you would have gotten back in claims. Unless you are ready to self-insure, it doesn’t make sense. Pet insurance is protection against a catastrophic event…it’s not a savings account. Here’s another way to think about it... pet insurance as a bunch of people getting together to protect the welfare of all their pets. Maybe your pet won’t need it, but somebody else’s pet will. It protects against the biggest tragedy of all…when some innocent pet is euthanized because money isn’t there for an available but expensive life-saving treatment. If somebody else’s innocent pet gets saved and yours doesn’t need the pet insurance you’ve paid for, well, a lot of pet lovers think that’s okay.
