I am delighted to present to you the first edition of ChopShots Documentary Film Festival Southeast Asia!

Dengan bangga saya persembahkan ke hadapan Anda edisi pertama ChopShots Documentary Film Festival Southeast Asia!

Good documentaries are intelligent reflections of changing socio-cultural realities and a powerful artistic medium to express personal perspectives and stories. Southeast Asia in its heterogeneity with its wealth of colorful tales, its fast-paced political and social transformation and its tumultuous history is a fertile playground for creative filmmakers. Nowadays, the digital revolution and affordable technology make it possible for anyone to become an independent filmmaker. However, on the international documentary scene, well-crafted documentaries of high quality from Southeast Asia are seen rarely, if at all.

This was the point of departure for Goethe-Institut’s culture and development initiative in 2009 to support the development of documentary filmmaking in Southeast Asia – in the beginning through local projects in each country. Now three years later, thanks to funding from the European Union, a regional approach has resulted in a series of training programs, seminars and workshops on different aspects of documentary filmmaking. ChopShots Documentary Film Festival Southeast Asia is the highlight of this string of activities and aims to not only celebrate talented SEA filmmakers and their latest documentaries but also to showcase successful international films from 2012 which have wowed audiences around the globe. It is also an opportunity for young up-and-coming filmmakers from Southeast Asia to meet each other, exchange the latest news on documentary and connect with international professionals from Europe and Asia. Over 50 films from 25 countries offer a diverse festival program and focus attention on a wide range of topics, from coming to terms with the past and the consequences of man’s exploitation of nature to intimate portraits of the marginalized in society. Additionally, a variety of fringe events such as panel discussions, lectures by the internationally renowned jury and an exhibition on old film theaters around Southeast Asia will complete your festival experience. Allow yourself to be mesmerized by these true stories that bring us closer together and move us to amazement, laughter and tears!

Franz Xaver Augustin Festival Director

Welcome to ChopShots!

Selamat datang di ChopShots!

We’re proud to present to you a multitude of documentary films – some of the freshest and best films from around the world, most of which have never been screened in Jakarta.

We set the focus of the festival on Southeast Asia and screen the best films from and about Southeast Asia in the International Competition, alongside some of the best recent productions from around the world. Moreover, we have put together a Southeast Asian competition for shorter films that have made their mark in the region. The films we selected tell stories about many different peoples and places; they come from Russia, China, Europe, the Americas, South Asia, Asia Pacific, and of course Southeast Asia. However, they speak a universal language not just in the way they have been made, but in terms of content as well. Many of the stories deal with hardships and suffering. Very few of them are funny, optimistic or light-hearted. They offer us a bleak outlook on the state of the world at the beginning of the 21st century: whether it is the acknowledgement that children need to leave home in order to go to school and the traditional life in the Russian Tundra is over, or whether it is a family suffering from poverty in Indonesia, these documentaries speak of reality without illusions. Obviously the levels of injustice, poverty and suffering differ and the scale is not balanced, yet the struggle is the same, David vs. Goliath, the people vs. their own governments - this is a common theme throughout many, though not all, of the films that we selected.

Yet, all is not lost! There is hope in these stories and the films never fail to entertain. The documentaries of our particular ChopShots selection take us on a journey into their particular world. We feel with the protagonists who stand up and speak out, who take their lives into their own hands and proactively seek change, hopefully for the better! Let yourselves be inspired by the stories of these extraordinary people!

DocNet Southeast Asia is proud to present the first edition of ChopShots Documentary Film Festival Southeast Asia. The Festival is the highlight of a series of activities to support documentary filmmaking in Southeast Asia and to professionalize and unite varied local initiatives to make the missing voice of the region heard.

8

The project addresses independent documentary filmmakers, producers, film schools, T V stations and other relevant stakeholders and aims to create adequate conditions for the documentary film scene. By organizing various events, the project aims to promote networking within and outside of the region, to raise awareness for documentaries from Southeast Asia and to create a market which will give new talents from the region a professional perspective.
Kicking off with a strategic seminar in Salaya, Bangkok in March 2012 to evaluate the current state of documentary in Southeast Asia, over 30 professionals and independent documentary filmmakers identified a few core issues of the region. In addition to the difficulty of finding funds, the two most pressing challenges were the lack of a supporting network among filmmakers from the region and the lack of a local audience. DocNet’s first Summer School 2012 in Manila was the first step to create a network of young filmmakers from the region to help and inspire each other and battle the loneliness of a documentary filmmaker. Now ChopShots, as a platform to showcase their films and establish connections to international professionals and festivals around the world, invites the wider public to enjoy the newest works of these filmmakers and get to know stories from neighbouring countries through the eyes of the filmmakers. Follow our activities such as the DocNet Summer School, DocNet Campus and sign up for our database of Southeast Asian documentary filmmakers.

www.docnetsoutheastasia.net Funded by the European Union About The European Union The European Union (EU) is a unique economic and political partnership between 27 European countries.

Nargis – when time stopped breathing Nargis – when time stopped breathing // Directed by The Maw Naing, Pe Maung Same // Myanmar, Germany // 2008-2012 // 90 min // Original with English subtitles

In May 2008 the cyclone 'Nargis' raged for hours in Myanmar’s Ayeyarwaddy Delta, killing 140,000 people. Seven days after the storm, young Burmese filmmakers made their way – carefully, since filming was banned by the government – to villages that had been utterly devastated, and met people who had lost everything to the cyclone. They recorded scenes that touched them to the core, moving through a world that appeared more surreal than real, where life and death seemed to coexist. “Nargis – when time stopped breathing” is the very first feature length documentary film made by Burmese filmmakers.

“Nargis – when time stopped breathing” adalah film dokumenter panjang pertama yang dibuat para pembuat film asal Burma.

International Competition Kompetisi Internasional

Thirteen heavyweights are running in competition for the award for best featurelength documentary and a prize of EUR 5,000. These films manage to dissect the social fabric of the culture they focus on with a long breath and a steady pace. The truths the filmmakers discover in their stories enlighten us about life in our age. Yes, the times they are a-changin’. But these truths go deeper than a mere rendering of facts. The stories they tell not only entertain but succeed in engaging the audience on a deeper emotional level. Whether

told with captivating cinematography, as in “The Tundra Book“, or in a seemingly relentless mode of documenting the last moments of a father’s life, as in “Ending Note – Death of a Japanese Salesman“, these films drive at a deeper truth. Werner Herzog has coined the term ecstatic truth and simultaneously reserved it exclusively for his own films. However, every well-made documentary cultivates ecstatic truth: an insight that is almost diametrically opposed to the reality of fact-checking accountants, an insight that acute knowledge of the world is only possible through the sublime.

Tondo, Beloved: To What Are the Poor Born? Tundong Magiliw: Pasaan Isinisilang Siyang Mahirap? // Directed by Jewel Maranan // the philippines // 2012 // 76 min // Original with English subtitles

Virgie’s family feeds on the fishes that lurk under the industrial ships of North Harbor in Manila's international port. Their alternatives are packs of tasteless gelatine found in the same waters. Their entertainment comes from imagining stories behind DVD inlays of Hollywood films and a tabloid article on Hillary Clinton and a rat’s ass. One morning the fish are dead, the sea is the colour of milk and the ships’ clanging is unusually bold; uncertainty is born on the same floor where they eat, blood is spilt in the same bowl where they clean fish and an old weary nation is revealed.

Jewel Maranan

The Land Beneath the Fog Negeri di Bawah Kabut // Directed by Shalahuddin Siregar // Indonesia, Germany // 2011 // 105 min // Original with English subtitles

In Genikan - a remote mountain village on the Merbabu slope in Central Java, a quiet community is facing change without understanding why it happens. Muryati and Sudardi, a farming couple in their thirties, try to understand why it rains more than during previous years. Meanwhile, 12 year old Arifin faces a different question: What does the future offer him? In the rhythm of a slow visual journey "The Land Beneath the Fog" takes an intimate look at family relations in Genikan. Describing a way of life on the brink of vanishing, this documentary offers deep insights into ‘an invisible and disenfranchised society’ struggling hard to maintain its existence.

Meanwhile in Mamelodi Meanwhile in Mamelodi // Directed by Benjamin Kahlmeyer // Germany // 2011 // 75 min // Original with English subtitles

Set against the raucous backdrop of the 2010 World Cup, "Meanwhile in Mamelodi" is a beautifully crafted portrait of a place and one family’s daily life inside it. The Mtsweni family lives in the Pretoria township Mamelodi, in the district known as E xtension 11. Their world is a ramshackle collection of corrugated tin dwellings and makeshift shops, open sewers littered with debris and red-earth rectangles filled with soccer-playing children and teens. Despite the poverty all around, Mosquito, the family’s seventeen-year-old daughter insists this is not her parents’ country. She is the face of South Africa’s future – part of “a new generation free to do all things.”

Benjamin Kahlmeyer

With or Without Me Trong hay ngoài tay em // Directed by Tran Phuong Thao, Swann Dubus // Vietnam // 2011 // 80 min // Original with English subtitles

Thi and Trung live in the gorgeous, rice-terraced mountains of Vietnam’s far northwest. Like many young men in this region on the main heroin route from Laos to China, they are addicts and HIV positive. While Thi wants to kick his habit, Trung just wants to die. "With or Without Me" is an intimate, tragicomic portrayal of two guys strung out at the edge of the map in a country struggling with drug abuse, and of their wives, families, doctors and friends trying to pull them back from the brink.

Sementara Thi ingin mengakhiri kebiasaannya, Trung hanya ingin mati." With or Without Me" adalah gambaran yang intim dan tragis-komikal tentang dua laki-laki di pinggiran peta sebuah bangsa yang berjuang melawan penyalahgunaan obat-obatan; dan tentang para istri, keluarga, dokter, dan teman yang berusaha menarik mereka dari ambang kehancuran.

Golden Slumbers Le Sommeil d'or // Directed by Davy Chou // France-Cambodia // 2011 // 96 min // Original with English subtitles

Cambodian cinema flourished in the 1960s, drawing huge crowds to theatres around the country, until the industry was destroyed by the Khmer Rouges in 1975. Of the 400 films produced, only 30 remain today. Almost all the actors were killed during the reign of Pol Pot and only a few of the directors were able to flee the country. Most of the old movie theatres of Phnom Penh have become restaurants, karaoke clubs or squats. "Golden Slumbers" resurrects the myths and legends of this lost cinema. Through survivors' stories and the search for remnants of their era in modern Phnom Penh, the film reveals the vital importance movies had for an entire generation, as well as the complex legacy they leave today's youth to inherit.

Davy Chou

Blush of Fruit Blush of Fruit // Directed by Jakeb Anhvu // Australia, Vietnam // 2012 // 93 min // Original with English subtitles

Tong Phuoc Phuc operates an orphanage in Nha Trang, central Vietnam. He persuades expectant mothers not to abort, promising them care and shelter. In return, the unwed mothers living at the orphanage must care for the many resident toddlers. After giving birth, they are free to move on, leaving their babies with Tong and his family. While praised by the country's Prime Minister and the media as a saviour of fallen women and their unwanted children, Tong's popularity and motives are overshadowed by allegations of profiteering and child neglect. This flyon-the-wall documentary gives an insight into the troubled life of the orphaned children of Nha Trang.

Jakeb Anhvu

Everyday he crosses the international border, the River Ganga, which eroded his home in mainland India when he was just four. Years later a fragile island called Char formed within the large river. Rubel’s family and many homeless people settled in this barren field controlled by border police. He dreams of going to his old school in India but reality forces him to smuggle rice and other goods to Bangladesh. While monsoon clouds announce a flood and the river swells up again, Rubel fights on: "Char may disappear but we won’t".

SEA Best Shorts Film-Film Pendek Asia Tenggara

In this section we devote ourselves entirely to the region of Southeast Asia. 21 films compete for the two awards of 3000 and 1500 Euro for Best Southeast Asian Short Film. We have loosely grouped the films together in different programs that help us bring closer the region through the prisms that define the cultural history, identity and reality of this part of the world. “Out of the Past“ showcases films that deal with memory, history and trauma from Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia. “Death and Beyond“ is an interesting look at how we deal with the loss of loved ones, how the dead still have rights to their history, their identity, their name, and the truth about their cause of death. “Man and Nature“ looks at the ever-changing ecological landscape, threats, disasters or simply life as a fisherman on the sea, something that unites all Southeast Asian countries with the exception of landlocked Laos. “People Power“, the title speaks for itself. Unfortunately our space and slots at the festival are limited and we had a multitude of films that deal with

this subject of people rising up against injustice, against their own governments, against powerful companies. We screen two films here that both come from the region. “Election Time!“ combines films from the Philippines and Indonesia that show how democracy works on the grassroots level. In “Gender Stories“ we tackle what until very recently was still taboo: the life of gay and lesbian people in Asia. Last but not least, we devote a whole program entitled “Voices from Myanmar“ to a country that only recently opened up and rid itself of draconian press and censorship laws, making documentary storytelling possible.

Above all, the aim of this section is to highlight both the shared cultural identities as well as the differences of the various Southeast Asian nations and ultimately bring them closer together in the process of sharing these engaging stories.

The Story of Ones ChuyÊ. n mO. i nhà // Directed by Pham Ngoc Lan // Vietnam // 2011 // 9 min // Original with English subtitles

"The Story of Ones" gives a face and a sense of place to the unseen and offers a personal counterpoint to the officially sanctioned. Like entering a roomful of stories, the viewer steps into an unfamiliar space guided only by the sound of the Vietnamese state radio tuning in to lifestyle programming, call-in shows and radio dramas. Portraits of daily life are layered atop the aural landscape creating questions and humorous situations and offering the viewer whole new perspectives on what once seemed normal.

Pham Ngoc Lan

Love Letter to the Soldier Surat Cinta Kepada Sang Prada // Directed by Wenda Tokomonowir // INDONESIA // 2011 // 7 min // Original with English subtitles

"Love Letter to the Soldier" is a video letter from a Papuan woman to an Indonesian soldier who was once based in her village on the PNG-Indonesian border, begging him to return to meet their three-year-old daughter: "I will continue to wait for you, Samsul. I don't care what people say." Samsul had courted Maria Goreti Mekiw, visiting her house every day and giving gifts of biscuits and milk until the two started a relationship. Back then Maria was a high school student and the TNI soldier seemed ‘polite and kind’. But instead of marrying her as Maria had expected, Samsul left when she was five months pregnant and has not been in touch since.

Wenda Tokomonowir

The war has long been over, but it lives on in the people who lived through it. The filmmakers went out to look for the traces and memories of war in the small community of Da Nang.

my navel is buried in the sea gilubong ang akon pusod sa dagat // Directed by Martha Atienza // The Philippines // 2011 // 32 min // Original with English subtitles

"my navel is buried in the sea" focuses on the fishermen and seafarers from Bantayan Island, The Philippines. The film attempts to capture the significance and mystery of the sea to the millions of Filipinos who derive their living from it, thus giving shape to a reality which is rarely seen. Life at sea is shown from various viewpoints, contrasting the fishermen to their counterparts, professional seamen. Their creative homemade diving equipment diverges from the heavy machinery used by the seafarers. Yet there are parallels which blur their differences – the extraordinary sights they witness in or on the sea, the constancy of the horizon.

Martha Atienza

"my navel is buried in the sea" adalah film dokumenter yang berpusat pada kehidupan para pelaut di Pulau Bantayan, Filipina.

Stage Entablado // Directed by Emil James Mijares // The Philippines // 2011 // 30 min // Original with English subtitles

2010 was an important election year in the Philippines. The “entablado” or stage is the politicians’ tool for gathering large crowds in a community to present their political platform. Entablado looks into the lives of people who depend on the informal economy brought about by Philippine elections and shows how poor people, in times of election, hope to earn a meagre income even for just a short period of time. Revealing the struggles of the common people amidst the glitters and promises of a political candidate's stage show, the film takes a look behind the façade of glamour.

Emil James Mijares

Retrospective: SEA Documents Restropektif: SEA Documents

Southeast Asia is known for its diversity of cultures, religions, ethnicities and its turbulent political history. However, the nations of the region do share an incredible amount of culture and history in their struggles as well as in the blossoming of independent nation states in the sense of "same same but different". Yet these shared moments or identities have so far not been in the spotlight, and intercultural exchange among ASEAN member states is only slowly heating up. So, “What do we actually know about society, history and the struggle of people in our neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia? And what binds us together?”. This retrospective takes on the challenge and attempts to change this situation. Seven must-see

documentaries from and about Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam will give some insights into seminal events of these countries’ histories, tell about conflicts and natural catastrophes that the people have gone through and portray people’s lives there. These films not only take the audience on a journey through Southeast Asia, but they also mark an important development of documentary film in each country and represent the best films that have been produced in or about these countries in recent years! Come with us on a journey through Southeast Asia and you will see it like you have never seen it before!

Thus charged, the filmmakers explore the realities behind the nationalistic slogans to reveal troubling scenes of Vietnamese life. Curator ' s Statement »“Story of Kindness” is a very rare Vietnamese film produced before Vietnam's socialist subsidy period ended in the late 1980s, but not catering to the usual official propaganda lines. Tran Van Thuy, was working within the state-controlled film system, yet he was so brave to the extent of risking his own security to make a film that forcefully pursued the truth. Although the film was produced as long as 27 years ago, it still hasn't lost its edge and relevance today, especially as the Vietnamese society is once again going through a turbulent period of transition.« Thi Nguyen for Vietnam

The Khmer Rouge ran what is regarded as one of the twentieth century’s most brutal regimes. Investigative journalist Thet Sambath is on a personal quest: he lost his own family in the Killing Fields. The film is his journey to discover not how but why they died. Curator ' s Statement »One of the most harrowing and compelling personal documentaries of our time, “Enemies of the People” sets out to expose the truth about the Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge who were behind Cambodia’s genocide. This is a riveting film that takes audiences as close to witnessing evil as they are ever likely to get.

Curator ' s Statement »"Nargis – when time stopped breathing" is the first feature length documentary film ever made by Burmese filmmakers. The poetic and aesthetic images of the film do not reveal that they had to be taken clandestinely in a zone that was closed and restricted by the Burmese military government. Although being screened in 16 international festivals, the film could only be shown in Burma in 2012, at Wathann Film Festival, where the filmmakers themselves presented the film for the first Ulrike Schaz for Myanmar time – with their real names.«

»"Nargis – when time stopped breathing" adalah film dokumenter panjang pertama hasil karya pembuat film asal Burma.

Lukas' Moment Lukas' Moment // Directed by Aryo Danusiri // Indonesia // 2005 // 60 min // Original with English subtitles

In the post-Suharto regime that has seen the growth of an emergent independence movement in West Papua, this film chronicles the drama of an indigenous people and their youth, whose cultural identity and livelihoods remain marginal to the Indonesian nation-state.

Curator ' s Statement »This film intimately depicts the very optimistic Lukas. He pursues a brighter future by investing in fisheries. But he finds many obstacles on his way. “Lukas’ Moment” doesn’t portray the stereotype of the uneducated and poor Papuan but shows his will to grow and move forward. The outstanding technical quality, the natural subject and observational approach made this film a milestone of Indonesian documentary.« Damar Ardi for Indonesia

Riles Life on the Tracks // Directed by Ditsi Carolino // The Phillipines // 2002 // 70 min // Original with English subtitles

Ditsi Carolino's powerful verite film exposes the claustrophobic world of Eddie, Pen and their five children, who live in a shanty along the railway tracks of Balic-Balic. Curator ' s Statement »Ditsi Carolino’s devotion to her craft, immersion in the environs of her subjects, and above all her compassionate gaze at society's deprived and marginalized citizens - all come together in “Riles” (made with her long-time collaborator Nana Buxani). This is her breakthrough film, made while she was on a study grant at England's National Film and Television School. It fuses both film art and socially committed filmmaking in a compelling way. Her empathy for the plight of the family depicted in “Riles” is emotionally transposed to the viewer not just to elicit sympathy, but to compel him into taking a stand or making a move in order to make a difference in the lives of the oppressed and the downtrodden.« Teddy Co for the Philippines

Ditsi Carolino

studied sociology at the University of the Philippines and documentary direction at the National Film and Television School, UK. Her graduation film "Riles Life on the Tracks" won several awards. She is now based in Manila, working on three feature-length documentary films.

Planet of Snail Planet of Snail // Directed by Yi Seung-Jun // South Korea // 2011 // 87 min // korean with English subtitles

Young-Chan often describes himself as a ‘snail’ since he has to rely only on his tactile senses, just as slowly as a snail, to communicate with others. Being unable to speak or hear, he once believed he had been singled out from the world. But an angel of a woman walks into his life. Soon-Ho, an empathetic woman who herself suffers from a spinal disability, changes his life dramatically. Being married to her, he explores the things he can neither see nor hear. Gentle and poetic, "Planet of Snail" tells a love story like no other.

An extraordinary work of both cinematic and political activism, "5 Broken Cameras" is a deeply personal, first-hand account of non-violent resistance in Bil’in, a West Bank village threatened by encroaching Israeli settlements. Shot almost entirely by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son, the film was assembled by Burnat and Israeli co-director Guy Davidi. Structured around the violent destruction of each one of Burnat’s cameras, the filmmakers’ collaboration follows one family’s evolution over five years of village turmoil.

The Filmmaker’s Journey Perjalanan Sang Pembuat Film

The world is changing and challenging what used to be our standard perspectives of the West and the East. This program will show how both tell their stories and even learn from one another. See how the economic crisis affected people's lives in Iceland, observe the unique democratic process of an election in the Philippines, and witness the journey of Indonesian lesbians discovering their place in the world or the journey of young women of Iranian descent visiting their homeland to learn about their roots. There's also the journey of Olivier Assayas, a well known French filmmaker, who follows the Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsiau-Hsien as he

returns to the cities all over Taiwan where he made his famous films. It is as bitter as a separation of a couple in the streets of Brazil and as sweet as the struggle of the Thai cheerleaders in the world competition. The past is revisited in two documentaries, one by a Vietnamese filmmaker and another one by an Australian filmmaker on the nascent media industry in East Timor. And last but not least, the personal journey of a Thai filmmaker to coming to terms with his mother’s suicide through an attempt to blend fiction and documentary. So, open your mind and enjoy the ride!

Iceland Year Zero Iceland année zéro // Directed by Sigurður Hallmar Magnússon, Armande Chollat-Namy // Czech Republic, Iceland, France // 2012 // 52 min // Original with English subtitles

In October 2008, the three main banks in Iceland collapsed, driving a nation into bankruptcy, causing thousands of people to lose their jobs, their personal savings − and their hope. How does a nation, once one of the richest and most developed countries in the capitalist world, react to total economic collapse? In a landscape where “to be rich” used to be a virtue, who is really to blame for the collapse of a far-too-fast-and-greedy banking system? Or is the decline of capitalist values maybe the best thing that could have happened to Iceland?

Mother Mother // Directed by Vorakorn Ruetaivanichkul // Thailand // 2012 // 65 min // Original with English subtitles

"Mother" is a hybrid of fiction and documentary. It is a portrait of the complicated, fragile, painful and realistic relationship between the filmmaker and his mother, who once tried to commit suicide. Ever since the incident, his family has never been the same. Attempting to understand his family, his mother and himself, the filmmaker also raises questions about society. What is a Thai family? What are its complexities? What is reality and what are the illusions of a family?

Vorakorn Ruetaivanichkul

Provincial Politics Provincial Politics // Directed by George Clipp // The Philippines // 2011 // 9 min // Original with English subtitles

Provincial politics in the Philippines are anything but straightforward. Corruption, vote buying and family ties that are a little too close are only a few of the problems when it comes to elections. In the small provincial town of Sagada, Richard Yodong runs for Deputy-Mayor. His honest approach to politics sets him apart from other politicians in town. With the camera always close by, Richard lives through election times dominated by the battling of two formerly cooperating politicians over the most powerful and lucrative position in town. Their race for mayor gives an insight into how politics works in the provinces, the lasting impact it has on the local people and why having a wedding suddenly becomes overly popular during election times.

Music Docs Rock! Music and film? The first thing that probably pops into your mind is a music video of the latest biggest pop star. But the combination of music and film has much more to offer. In the last decades music documentaries such as Scorsese’s “The Blues“ or Wadleigh’s “Woodstock - Three Days of Peace and Music“ captured social revolutions reflected through music. Whether it was simply by following an artist who represented an idea or by picturing a movement or a special music event, these films were a mirror of changing socio-cultural structures at that point in time. Following this tradition, five new music documentaries from and about Singapore,

Mongolia and Indonesia give a new perspective on Asia and its noisy identity. The films show cultural conflicts between tradition and modernity, they picture how music can be a chance to overcome grievances and give an insight into the actual social reality of these countries.

Dalam dekade terakhir, dokumenter musik seperti “The Blues“ karya Scorsese atau “Woodstock - Three Days of Peace and Music“ karya Wadleigh menangkap revolusi sosial yang tercermin lewat musik.

Don’t miss this visual sound experience and discover that behind the music there is always a story to be told.

Mongolian Bling

Screened with

Mongolian Bling // Directed by Benj Binks // Australia // 2011 // 89 min // Mongolian with English subtitles

Forget about nomads and monks! It’s hip hop that’s making Mongolia move in the 21st century. "Mongolian Bling" jumps into the thriving music scene in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, and follows stars as they rap nationwide with their bitches, cars, and jewels. But beyond this bling lies a failed democracy, and a dying ancient culture whose loss is mourned by the elders. While many artists still emulate the West, a handful are using hip hop to try and salvage their country’s failing democracy, and bringing Mongolia’s rich musical history into their modern beats and rhymes.

Benj Binks

Having travelled the world for the last 10 years, Benj has expanded on his passion for telling stories through photography, writing, and more recently film. He conceived "Mongolian Bling" in 2007 and was the main creative force in bringing it to life.

Metamorfoblus Metamorfoblus // Directed by Dosy Omar // Indonesia // 2011 // 97 min // Indonesian with English subtitles

Slank is a band of five young people with Peace, Love, Unity and Respect for Indonesia. They are expressing their dreams through the sound of drums, blaring voices and wrenching guitar sound. The film tells three stories of individual 'Slankers'. Supriyadi (Joker), from Batam, transfers the Slank-attitude of Peace to his professional life as a policeman. In Yogyakarta one Slanker and his father show how Love can change a life for the better. Last but not least, the story of a Slanker from Kupang, Timor Leste, is all about Unity and Respect.

Dosy Omar

Dosy Omar was born in 1977 in Jakarta and studied film directing with a focus on documentary at the Jakarta Institute Of Arts. He produced his first film "Dari Pisang hingga Lidah Mertua" in 1998. His documentary "Star Galaxy" was screened in 2004 at Singapore and Rotterdam film festivals.

This documentary on Venezuela’s visionary music education system introduces the audience to the “Simón Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela” and its charismatic conductor Gustavo Dudamel. The film accompanies him and four young fellow musicians from their rehearsals in Caracas, Venezuela to an ambitious performance at the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, Germany. We meet these young musicians, watch their daily lives, hear their stories, and watch them perform – but more than that, we discover that their commitment to the Youth Orchestra is an essential part of their lives.

The Southeast Asia Movie Theater Project

Proyek Gedung Bioskop Asia Tenggara

Throughout the 20th century, the stand-alone movie theater was the preeminent venue for entertainment across Southeast Asia, an important social institution and a center for the distribution of information and values. For better or worse, changing technology, socio-economic structures and social mores have led to the rapid decline of these often monumental venues. Philip Jablon documented the architecture and atmosphere of over 200 stand-alone movie theaters in Thailand, Laos and Burma. His grand vision is to document all those that are still remaining throughout Southeast Asia and to evoke thoughts about the recent past, the function of cities and the act of going to the movies in the countries of Southeast Asia. Philip Jablon graduated in Sustainable Development from Chiang Mai University and his project shows his interest in the intersection between Southeast Asian architecture, development, social history and politics.

The exhibition will be complemented by photos of the Permata Movie Cinema Theater in Indonesia by Feri Latief. His pictures of this movie theater in Yogyakarta show the building’s old magic and attraction but at the same time document first signs of the decay one year before it was closed down leaving the viewer with a feeling of nostalgia. Feri Latief is a freelance news photographer, since 2006 he has been a photo contributor for National Geographic Indonesia. His work has been published in several well known media. In 2010 he received the Jakarta Journalist Appreciation Award (A JJ). As part of this exhibition, we will also feature the documentary “Sorry, The Cinema is Closed” by Ardi Wilda Irawan which tells the story of how this very same Permata movie theater was closed down on 1 August 2010. This event represents the end of a long history of movie theatres in Yogyakarta, which at its height reached 20 movie theaters.

Sorry, The Cinema Is Closed Directed by Ardi Wilda Irawan // Indonesia // 17 min
