Conrad Schumacher Clinic at Atlanta Dressage September, 2018
by
Suzanne Dansby
When Suzanne Dansby approached Roel Theunissen recently, to inform him that her trainer and mentor, Conrad Schumacher, would be coming to Atlanta, Roel was excited about it and was interested in organizing a group of students and horses to take some lessons with him. Atlanta Dressage, home base for trainers Adam Lastowska and Roel Theunissen, is located near the end of a cul-de-sac in a quiet neighborhood of John’s Creek. The barn, filled with well-cared for horses, and the perfect footing of the arena, make for an ideal setting for a great clinic. The horses and riders were well turned-out, and were eager to work with Mr. Schumacher. A positive experience for all, the progress of the riders and their horses was very apparent from the start to the end of each, and every session! Everyone was smiling at the conclusion of their lessons. One of the biggest take-away, was that the riders discovered new exercises Mr. Schumacher introduced to them, which helped their horses to go with more impulsion and relaxation, along with improved quality of their gaits, translating into better movements....the icing on the cake!
Susanne Lauda and Roel Theunissen had some insightful comments to make about their experiences in their lessons with Mr. Schumacher:
…Since I grew up in Germany it was an interesting experience to ride with a German instructor the first time in almost 30 years. Mr. Schumacher was quite amused of my list of things that need improvement, but easily found out the bigger problems, and introduced exercises to address them. His main advice for me was to relax my shoulders more so that the contact becomes more elastic. It was reassuring to hear similar things that my regular trainer Roel Theunissen addresses, but since Mr. Schumacher used different verbiage my brain processed them also differently. The first few minutes that was a bit challenging, but since dressage is as much a matter of mental focus as it is a physical activity those grey cells need to be woken up once in a while…
Susanne Lauda
7
Mr. Schumacher started every session with asking the riders what they like to work on and follows through on those requests. Suzanne Dansby’s Zephyr is e very nice and well trained horse and Mr. Schumacher knows the horse for many years already. So he went quickly to the point and started to work on increasing engagement, suppleness and collection exercises. The horse stepped up right away to his exercises and moved nicely along improving by the stride! ….The work was refreshing, positive and most importantly very effective! (Thanks Mr. Schumacher and thanks Suzanne!) …Roel Theunissen Mr. Schumacher also emphasized the importance of the “control of the neck” through forward-riding into the bridle, from back to front, and not the other way around. He helped the riders to use their seats and legs more effectively, with clearer aids and more precision. Additionally, he talked about the importance of using a snaffle in everyday training, and, that “it is especially important to ride the younger or less educated horses in the snaffle.” It was a pleasure to bring Mr. Schumacher to conduct a clinic at Atlanta Dressage. The atmosphere there is very professional, and Roel and Adam are excellent hosts!

The 4 tempis are back on the shelf until Prix St. George. One other anomaly: the first movement after the entrance is an Extended trot on the diagonal. Near the end of the test you are asked to show a Medium on the long side. All this happens for real on the first of December. If you are new to the sport, the test changes may seem traumatic, but like breaking in a new pair of boots, pretty soon they’ll feel like home. If you’re one of those individuals whose boots always pinched no matter what, I can only recommend Advil and a glass of sherry before you show.

YOUTH CORNER
GDCTA Youth Council - Praise for 2018 Dressage4Kids and Atlanta Youth Festival Dressage 4 Kids team:
I want to take the time to thank you all for the time, resources, and effort that went into putting on such a successful TEAM Clinic and the Atlanta Youth Dressage Festival this past weekend in Conyers, GA. It was so clear to me that there was months of preparation behind the scenes that went into making this weekend interesting, interactive and educational!
This was my first TEAM Clinic with Lendon so I was unsure what to expect of it, but I am glad I had the opportunity to go because it taught me more about dressage and horsemanship than I anticipated. My goal for this clinic was to get my horse moving more forward and work on my position, which we did. But, more so, I gained a re-appreciation for the basics of riding, like the importance of square halts, the essentialness of riding proper corners, and the effectiveness of a leg aid, that I had forgotten in my drive to perfect my upper level movements like tempi changes and canter pirouettes. The importance on the fundamentals of dressage was something that Lendon worked on with all of the other riders this weekend as well, proving that regardless of the level you show, these basics will always be crucial. In addition to the clinic, I really enjoyed getting to ride my dressage test, participate in an equitation class, and reflect my knowledge on the written exam that were all part of the festival. With my show season winding down, it was a great opportunity for me and my horse to get one last ride in a show ring in. I hope in the future more people come out for the Atlanta Youth Dressage Festival and appreciate the competitive but candid show that it provides. Again, thank you D4K team and everyone with GDCTA that worked to put on this weekend, I think everyone agrees that it was an educational and enjoyable weekend (even though it was a little too wet and cold!). I look forward to getting involved with more D4K events in the near future. ~Kylie Dickinson

I attended Saturday and was so pleased. I hope that she comes back. She included the auditors by explaining why she was having the rider do something. I took away many tips for my horses.
I hope that GDCTA can host Kathy again. ~Debbie Grant, auditor This was probably one of the best clinics I’ve ever attended either as a rider or auditor. At times, it was like drinking from a fire hose (thankfully I have my videos!) but there was so much good information in each of the sessions. Kathy was firm, but kind to balance that firmness. And the feel of my mare after working on just simple movements such as the passade, was incredible! Kathy was also very encouraging, which was very helpful for those of us who lack confidence in their riding and training abilities. I’d love to train with her again, and hope she returns to our area.
~Kelli Agnew, rider Riding with Kathy was an honor--her approach to teaching builds simple movements up from the ground,
such that both horse and rider learn how each contributes to the next. Her positive style also highlights what you do well, and how those strengths can be harnessed to improve in the future. I hope GDCTA invites her back in the future. ~Abbey Dondanville, rider Kathy was instrumental in coordinating the balance and throughness for the best expression of my mare's gaits. She focused on little things such as timing of aids, and steadiness on contact, when to use half halt and when to lighten. I especially appreciated how positive she is with horse and rider. She is masterful with her longlining to help the horse understand the amount of drive and collection we are asking for. She is a treasure! ~Julie Shannon, rider/host Kathy is one of my favorite clinicians, because she is articulate and engaging, clear and concise. She comfortably weaves the fabric of the training scale throughout each rider's session whether they are at training level, Grand Prix or anything in between. She has a keen ability to teach from both the trainer's and the judge's perspective, and is accessible and enthusiastic with auditors as well. I always come away with a ton of information that I can use while training, as well as phrases that I can plagiarize when teaching my own students! ~Mary McGuire Smith, auditor This clinic was the first time that I have ridden in a GDCTA clinic and the experience was incredibly rewarding. The event was so well organized and I greatly appreciated the hospitality of the GDCTA staff and Shannondale Farms. Kathy's methods are very tangible, leaving the rider with clear take aways to practice. Her three gaits defined as "March, Trot, Canter" is a keeper! It was inspiring to see the refinements that occurred within each ride from start to finish after working with Kathy. Thanks to GDCTA, Shannondale Farms, and Kathy for a successful clinic. ~Chanda Wicker, rider
