Welcome! See the world from a different angle and immerse yourself in London’s festival of shape-shifting, perception changing, free outdoor performance. From the top of Greenwich Park Hill you can look out on one of the most spectacular views of the capital – a city of stories. GDIF2014 invites you to experience these familiar streets and public spaces as they’re transformed with astonishing free performance from around the world.
10
From gravity-defying aerial choreography to global stories of war and peace; encounters between the living and the dead and a house turned inside out; from a pop-up desert island to a flying ship; this summer the magic of outdoor theatre will reinvent the everyday and encourage you to look at the world anew.

When the sun sets on the summer solstice, the dead rise from their graves to dance in the streets. Haitian culture looks at death in a very different way to our own. It is not a hushed-up affair of coffins and closed doors but a loud celebration of all that life has to offer, in this world and the next. At dusk, join French company Rara Woulib in conjuring the ghosts of the city’s departed for this joyous celebration. See for yourself why the dead have so much more fun than the living.

Prepare to immerse yourself in a psychedelic world in which aerialists descend from giant revolving “optical art” mobiles accompanied by electrifying live music. Enter Spanish/ Argentinean company Voalá’s fluorescent wonderland as gorgeous aerial choreography combines with the visceral thrill of sky-diving in a show in which anything is possible. Internationally renowned for their virtuosity in turning the sky into their stage, Voalá were last seen at GDIF in 2010, and in this, their latest aerial extravaganza you can expect to be swept up in an experience in which performers dive down over your head, whilst pyrotechnic effects and live music from Duchamp Pilot deliver a sensory overload. GDIF’s opening night spectaculars are legendary, so don’t miss this one! Seeing The World 2014 is the 300th anniversary of the Longitude Act, reminding us that Greenwich has been at the heart of human efforts to know our place in the universe for a very long time. Here, mariners were trained and voyages set out to explore the oceans while, up on their hill, the astronomers of the Royal Observatory studied the sky through their telescopes. New discoveries can help us to make sense of our world but they can also turn cherished ideas upside down. The great telescopes of the Royal Observatory were used to precisely map the heavens, producing reliable tables for navigators and anchoring our concepts of position and timekeeping in the reassuring forms of the Prime Meridian

I’m a producer. I make theatre on Broadway, off Broadway and in the West End. But for me, there is nothing quite as exciting as making theatre outdoors. Why should an artist’s imagination be contained in buildings? When audiences sit down in a plush red chair in a beautiful but familiar-looking proscenium theatre, the questions are: Will it be one act or two? A play or a musical? A comedy or a drama? Take audiences outside to the street, to a park, to a field - away from the formality
and Greenwich Mean Time. And yet the Observatory also houses James Bradley’s zenith telescope, used by the third Astronomer Royal to prove that the Earth, far from being the serenely immovable centre of the universe, is hurtling through space and wobbling on its axis as it goes. Both art and science have always had the power to transform the way we see the world and our place within it, and here in Greenwich they have been doing just that for centuries. Dr Marek Kukula Public Astronomer Royal Observatory Greenwich
of traditional structures, and all those paradigms fall away. Our senses are awakened and we become more open to adventurous work. The possibilities become limitless. We begin to see performance and the city in new ways. Artists are explorers. Who better to show us the city and make us see the landscape anew? Artists can take us to farflung parts of the city we’ve never investigated, or into a courtyard around the corner that we hadn’t previously noticed.
For me, outdoor theatre is so exciting then because it asks audiences and artists to step out of their usual patterns, to come together in new ways and finally to celebrate the city.

Testimonies, music and physicality fuse into a powerful, multi-disciplined song cycle performance which depicts the extraordinary stories and life changing experiences of war journalists - men and women who risk their lives in extreme circumstances. A woman sits on a bench and watches the world pass by. And what a world it is! Bench is an acrobatic performance about the dance of life and the theatre in the everyday action around us. Birdwatching 4X4 invites you to sit inside a mobile observation box on an investigative adventure through public space. Flemish choreographer Benjamin Vandewalle invites you to explore the world anew from your peep hole inside this most unusual theatre, offering an intimate view of the city around you. The combination of your roving view point and a mirrored wall (which is moved by the dancers) creates a poetic interplay between reality and optical illusion, whilst performers and members of the public move in and out of an ever-changing picture as the everyday blends with staged performance.

Love, freedom, blood, sweat and rain-storms: Frantic is an explosive and moving exploration of our relentless 21st century devotion to being busy. Combining acrobatics and dancetheatre choreographed around a bespoke structure, Frantic uses a rich physical language to pull apart its subject – the reality of a running mind and one man’s thirst for escape. Working at the meeting point between dynamic physicality and rich visual design, this is Acrojou’s second outdoor show and the directorial debut of company co-founder Jeni Barnard.

Grime tells the story of a man fighting his disillusioned way to happiness through greed, manipulation and violence. He lives with his dysfunctional family in a make-shift, haphazard shack constructed on top of a burger van. Their complicated mesh of
co-dependency, lies and deceit is all that holds them together. The performance follows the trials and tribulations of a family intent on survival in harsh times. Outside on the street you are literally and figuratively at the mercy of the elements; yes, there are codes and understood rules of engagement but there is no guarantee that they are espoused and respected in the same way by everyone else. of Hamba is a modern mystery play created by Tiata Fahodzi, Britain’s leading African theatre company. the subject or object is the more likely we are to pay attention. The Proscenium Arch of a theatre justifies our great and magical games of complicit make believe; doing so in your local park or high street demands that you justify yourself! In other words the concept of certainty has to come from within. This was our cue to buckle down and tell the story honestly, openly, enthusiastically and with integrity. Storytelling, make-believe and theatre existed long before the West End. Architecture, technology and lyricism never trump the truth: a good story, told with invention doesn’t need a huge budget to work. Now is our time to be honest and courageous and hope you are transfixed!

Pillows become clouds and beds are boats as the sheets billow above, inviting you into a world of colour, puppets and fun. Pull on your pyjamas and grab your pillow, as this will delight the young and young at heart. Commissioning credits page 26

Combining qualities of silence, anticipation, strength and spontaneous participation make this a show like no other. Pelat is a bold, honest and quirky venture by artist Joan Català, a completely unique performance combining dance, theatre and circus.
It’s 1942. London Transport Clippies from the 601 trolleybus service are having lunch between shifts. As their imaginations wander we see them journey through the challenges of Britain at War, the revolution in the female workforce and problem passengers on public transport.
In this risky undertaking, Joan Català lives in the moment, and asks the audience to share that moment with him.
Evoking the spirit of the 1940’s through music, text and dance, this new dance theatre piece recalls the role of women at times of war.

Soul-bearing Fado, a Portuguese song of longing and regret, is combined with sensual contemporary dance and exquisite fire effects to evoke the steamy magic of Lisbon’s historical Old Quarter. Nuno Silva’s career spans contemporary dance, classical opera and West End musicals. Here he draws on his Portuguese roots to tell an absorbing story of love and jealousy as the light fades, shadows fall and flames dance, creating an entrancing mystical atmosphere. What do fantasies look like when we take them to reality? Award winning performance arrives in Greenwich for its UK Premiere in a dazzling show that crosses over between dance and circus. This stunning duet from Spanish company HURyCAN explores the boundaries in relationships and how one slip can become a dangerous pattern. Fast, frantic, funny and poignant with glimpses of tango, flamenco and jazz, HURyCAN delivers surprise and shock in equal measure.

Experience the future in Time Machine. The bewildering effects of the cyclotron will make you feel giddy as you enter a purpose built time machine situated in Cutty Sark Gardens. Will we live on the moon? Will be we have phones as small as stamps? Will we still be here? The science of particle acceleration meets bizarre Dutch theatre to sweep you back to the future.

A traditional garden shed is being unpacked by two ingenious characters. And with a shed load of ideas and garden implements the duo create a contraption on the street that is overflowing with potential. Evoking the famous inventions of Heath Robinson and Rube Goldberg, this kinetic assortment of tools works together to hilarious effect. Come and see how a cup of tea, pet cat, garden rake and precise engineering combine for a stunning finale.

What is the difference between a house and a home? Award winning Metro-Boulot-Dodo in association with Wired Aerial Theatre (As The World Tipped), create an enchanting and visually stunning spectacular which unlocks the feelings that are housed in our homes. A universal story of one woman’s life unfolds through stunning aerial performances interacting with video projections on a larger than life house structure. Evoking the dreams that we invest in our houses as well as our need, at times, to escape from them, this contemporary outdoor show offers a surprising glimpse behind the front door.

My home in Bow I’ve lived in a Victorian terrace opposite Mile End
Park for over 20 years. When the first flying bomb to hit London blitzed our railway bridge, a sycamore wood grew up next door, followed by an evangelical church and now a block of flats. Since coming east with an Acme housing association artist, I’ve often strolled on the grass over the buried streets to the surviving Palm Tree pub and the Regent’s Canal.
16/17
I signed our letter to the press protesting at the
proposal to demolish Rachel Whiteread’s sculpture ‘House’. She said its ghost would linger, and so does the memory of its final householder, Sydney, (in earlier life a docker unloading sacks bursting with asbestos) who hung out protest banners refusing to leave. The Friends of Mile End Park run an annual Fair & Dog Show and campaigns such as that for the traffic-lighted safe crossing to the Park. Joan Griffiths Local Resident

Told in a unique physical style by extraordinary looking characters who have landed from another world Hamba tells us the timeless story of winning, losing and surviving.

In a first for UK street theatre we welcome artists from Libya to create a new work especially for GDIF audiences.
Over the past year I have visited Libya 6 times and created with my Libyan colleagues (by all accounts) the first ever piece of Libyan Street Theatre. The project was a partnership between the British Council and the National Theatre of Tripoli and we performed the piece ‘A Family Picnic’ in a public park in March this year. It was an incredible experience.

Child Soldier explores the themes of loss, childhood and innocence in a world where children are drawn into the realms of narcotrafficking and guerrilla warfare. recent years. The former regime didn’t support the art form and the act of going to theatre buildings to watch a play is a completely foreign idea to most people in the country. Since the revolution, as the Libyan people attempt to work out their new identity and cope with continual disruptions to daily life, it has understandably not been a priority to create a theatrical landscape or even a theatre performance. The huge majority of Libyans have little idea what the theatre is or could be- a whole generation has not experienced it. Therefore the creation of a street theatre performance, that took the theatre out to the people in their local spaces, was a vital

and timely development. It worked really well and we were all thrilled with the response.
Working with Libyan actors, designers and musicians we created the story of a family get together to celebrate the 18th birthday of the youngest son. Entirely in Arabic with local music and recognisable family dynamics the piece arrived in a Tripoli park one sunny afternoon and unpacked its tale. A relatively simple story was hugely enjoyed and understood by crowds that we struggled to keep off the ‘stage’. It was a humbling experience to see the hunger and desire for storytelling and a community experience. There is no formal theatre training in Libya and very little opportunity to act or create work. The opportunity afforded to us by the European Development Fund and the British Council to both make a show in Libya and also a residency at GDIF will have huge impact on theatre practice for the Libyan artists.

A woman sits on a bench and watches the world pass by. And what a world it is! Bench is an acrobatic performance about the dance of life and the theatre in the everyday action around us. Brides and bag ladies, fitness freaks and fantastic fantasies form a cavalcade of comedy, tragedy and poignancy, reflecting on who we are and how we interconnect. “They climb up, balance on, vault over and plummet alongside one another with ease, marked by a simple but emotionally delicate charm”

Fancy a trip to the pub for a story? Telling the tale of two very old friends, 2Faced Dance Company charts their life story recounting ups, downs and humorous tales with heartpumping action and slapstick storytelling. Supportive, competitive, strong... what does it mean to be a man? Following the success of dance duet Push as part of Dancing City in 2012, Company Chameleon returns with Hands Down, a ground-breaking dance exploration of how men interact. Using acrobatic and physical action, the hierarchy and boundaries of masculinity are charted, through highly physical yet sensitive contemporary dance which strips back the layers to reveal the dynamics of behaviour. Choreographed by learning disabled dance artist Chris Pavia, The Awakening explores the anxiety of being stranded. Four disabled and non-disabled dancers are trapped in a mesmerising ritual which has elements of a dream. As the dream unfolds, Chris’s hypnotic choreography absorbs you in a very personal world. Last seen at Dancing City with their fast-paced production of Tracking, StopGAP returns with what promises to be yet another absorbing and pioneering piece of integrated dance theatre.
I’ve had a lot of experience doing outdoor arts because I’ve performed with Stopgap Dance Company in SPUN Productions and Tracking both of which were part of GDIF. I learnt from this experience that it’s important to make dance material actually outside and not in a studio because we have to get used to the gravelly concrete floor, the sun in our eyes and the wind in our faces. And the atmosphere of the outside is different to working inside. All of these things change the way we dance. We also have to think about the audience and how they surround the performance. The dancers can be seen at all times in the outdoors because there are no wings.
From lidos to shopping centres, from parks to palaces, Big Dance is the UK’s largest festival of dance participation and performance. And now, back again after last year’s dance extravaganza, Big Dance’s signature youth event transforms Jubilee Plaza into a massive performance playground for London’s talented young dancers and youth dance companies.

In this intriguing dance performance you can choose your own soundtrack from a selection provided through a personal music system. Will your choice influence the dance? How does music affect the way we feel? For passers-by the circle of spectators seems oddly quiet, as dancers perform in silence in front of an enthralled seated audience, whilst listeners are in control of the emotional content of each performance.

Take a trip to Argentina with these intensely expressive tango duets, guaranteed to conjure up the heat and sensuous atmosphere of Buenos Aires. Following previous dance performances at Dancing City which have drawn on circus skills, this year sees a gravitydefying Catalan performance landing on the banks of the Thames.
