GDIF offers you the latest outdoor productions from across the UK and overseas, with many performances receiving their London and UK premieres here. Each year, you, our audience tell us how much you love getting swept up in the spectacle and surprise of the events, and in 2015, we’ll be doing our utmost to deliver another memorable year: from an opening night chorus of vibrantly costumed actors to an epic evocation of the life and work of one of the world’s greatest artists, Frida Kahlo; from an incendiary and timely exploration of the power of books to a celebratory finale inspired by the Indian festival of Holi. The Festival always sets out to reinvent the everyday and encourage you to take a fresh look at the world. So dive in and feel the colour!

It gives me enormous pleasure to welcome you to this year’s Greenwich+Docklands International Festival. Every year the festival programme brings a host of new, unusual and stunning spectacles to thrill and delight our residents and visitors alike. The festival themes this year of community and shared achievement are very close to my heart. As a resident, former teacher and now as Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich I see on a daily basis how we are at our strongest and most effective when we are all working together and striving to improve life for everyone who lives here and to welcome those who visit. My professional career as a drama teacher , both in local schools and on community programmes, has made me acutely aware or the power of the arts to help us see our lives in a new light. Whether as performers or actors, live performances really can reach the parts that other arts can’t, and help us to understand the world around us. This year’s opening performance of Kori Kori promises to do just that. As it processes through the centre of Greenwich, thrilling families and children as they look forward to the weekend of festival fun and exciting visitors who come to the town in anticipation of a memorable Friday evening out, I am sure that it will make us think as much as it will entertain.

The themes of the performance resonate strongly with the sense of community that we are all striving for and that I witness on a daily basis as I have the privilege of meeting people from all walks of life here in this magnificent borough.
Presented by Periplum and Corn Exchange Newbury This spectacular, immersive performance depicts a society where reading is forbidden and firemen are employed to burn books (451 degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature at which paper burns).
This London premiere is based on the classic novel by Ray Bradbury and will feature incredible staging with moving structures, an emotionally compelling score and of course pyrotechnics. Commissioning credits page 25 This performance is Captioned and Audio Described. Headsets available at the viewing area (with deposit) Level access to performance space. Accessible toilets on site. The accessible viewing platform is sign posted or please ask a volunteer. More information at festival.org/access
This year GDIF has many highlights, as ever, and I am absolutely delighted that it builds to what promises to be an amazing crescendo. The Four Fridas, which comes with the generous support of the Arts Council of England and other sponsors, will undoubtedly be an amazing and unforgettable spectacle. It not only brings world class art to Woolwich but will hopefully inspire more world class artists to come here and create work to delight and inspire us for years to come.
Idea Store In the dystopian world of Fahrenheit 451 the government is able to impose social control on individuals through book burning. Books – which often contain controversial views and cause people to question received opinion – don’t make for a compliant public, so ‘firemen’ were charged with destroying books to ensure happier more amenable people. In this country councils are actually legally bound to provide free books for people through public libraries – of which there are seven in Tower Hamlets. Idea Stores have hundreds of thousands of books, including the largest collection of Bengali books in London, all of them with the power to change lives.
But these books have to be read. Another theme of the book is the use of technology and mass media to enforce conformity on a dumbed-down population. Fortunately for all of us there’s been no reduction here in the desire for reading with more than 2 million – and rising – visits to Idea Stores every year. Kate Pitman, Idea Store, Tower Hamlets Council
As Leader of a Council which is proud to support Arts and Culture I hope that you all have a fantastic time at the festival.
Cllr Denise Hyland Leader, Royal Borough of Greenwich

What is the relationship between ourselves as individuals and the systems which govern us? In this feat of perilous balance we see how one man is in control of a system but at the same time controlled by it – if he were to leave it, he would surely fall. A beautiful physical theatre performance as a man holds himself afloat with only a slackrope to stand on.
Water, water everywhere...and music. Two clowns try their best to stay dry and play to the crowd in this delightful mash-up of modern physical theatre moving from comic to absurd in a setting of aquatic poetry and music. There’s a small water kiosk for safety, but there’s just too much water!
A brand new, dynamic dance piece, all set to a percussion and live-mixed electronic sound world which is created and played live. Two dancers vie, test and outdo each other whilst being challenged by the musician. As the powerful soundscape builds, all the performers are drawn into an energising and ritualistic interplay between movement and music.

The Blue Nile is a local, family run Eritrean/Italian café and restaurant, harking back to Eritrea’s colonial history. Eritrea’s capital Asmara was built by pioneering Italian designers, creating wonderful modernist buildings. Many Italians moved to Asmara, and as a result the Italian and Eritrean cultures, languages and foods became completely intertwined. As we began works to our shop in Woolwich, we discovered clues to its past. This was once a sausage making shop, built in 1935 and what a large, grand butcher’s it was! We’ve lovingly uncovered all the tiles, ceiling and railings to reveal this piece of local history. The menu has a mix of Italian and Eritrean classics, from

A performance created around a specially designed bar structure, in which high energy dance and acrobatics combine with insightful observation, humour and wit in this lively and entertaining take on social anxiety and extreme behaviour.

A moving exploration of how the human body remains essential to war, even in the 21st century. Offering an intimate view of the training that prepares our soldiers for combat, the performance weaves a story of physical transformation, helping us to understand how the experience of warfare affects those that choose to put their life on the line.
A performance created around a specially designed bar structure, in which high energy dance and acrobatics combine with insightful observation, humour and wit in this lively and entertaining take on social anxiety and extreme behaviour.

In this beautiful evocation of the Icarcus myth for two male dancers, choreographer Frédéric Cellé imagines metal wings through the integration of circus, Cyr wheel into the performance. As the performers challenge gravity, they tell a timeless story of our aspiration to touch the stars.
A UK premiere, in which an indispensable characteristic of our nature is explored: survival. At last year’s Dancing City, Sharon Fridman’s previous production Hasta Donde? was a huge hit with GDIF audiences, so don’t miss this rare chance to catch an exceptional international company in this visceral and virtuosic new performance.
A new contemporary dance and physical theatre performance on a bespoke scaffolding structure, created by a team of professional artists inspired by the philosophy of Parkour. Exploring both a physical and mental landscape, this highenergy performance asks, if we don’t take leaps of faith and risk everything do we jeopardise even more?

The West End comes to the Wharf in this exuberant tap dance extravaganza, featuring a cast of glamorous dancers in playsuit costumes performing with a nostalgic soundtrack of contagious popular music from the 1950’s
Experience a mesmerising performance of the rich Maori Kapa Haka tradition in this new show, specially developed by New Zealand choreographer Corey Baker for the year of the Rugby World Cup. The performance brings together tribal footwork, Poi dancing and powerful chanting, all woven together with contemporary movement.
A powerful, sensitive and revealing look at male group dynamics, uncovering the many faces of men strength, camaraderie, vulnerability and hostility. Chameleon have been audience favourites at Dancing City in previous years with their remarkable contemporary duets, so don’t miss this new tour de force show, featuring 5 exceptional male performers.
This duet between two Catalan brothers, combines contemporary dance with the skills and language of popping, locking, breakdance, hip hop and snowboarding, to create a show without barriers or limits, whilst exploring the importance of trust and togetherness.
An award winning duet exploring the boundaries in relationships and how one slip can become a dangerous pattern. Fast, frantic, funny and poignant with glimpses of tango, flamenco and jazz, the performance delivers surprise and shock in equal measure.
In this beautiful evocation of the Icarcus myth for two male dancers, choreographer Frédéric Cellé imagines metal wings through the integration of circus, Cyr wheel into the performance. As the performers challenge gravity, they tell a timeless story of our aspiration to touch the stars.

Originally from Christchurch New Zealand, I left my home country at a young age to train to become a dancer, choreographer and director. My ambition as a director is to make exciting and engaging work that appeals to everyone and can compel all walks of life to enjoy movement. I have always believed that dance is very special and should be for all and not a luxury for the elite. My passion drives me to create work for outdoors, without the confines of a dark and sometimes scary building, inviting and welcoming people to see their own world heightened and brought to life differently through the magic of theatre. Haka Day Out is not only built through these values,

but came out of a desire to share the rich, enchanting and precious artform of the Maori people. Touring Haka Day Out in the year of the Rugby World Cup hosted here in the UK, is a dream come true, and I cannot wait to see the faces of the people as they experience the magic in front of them. This large scale theatre spectacular is inspired by the life and work of legendary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Aerial performance, contemporary dance, pyrotechnics, music, narration and giant video projections will combine in an immersive experience telling the dramatic story of one of the world’s most iconic artists. Part of Royal Greenwich Festivals
Shechter Junior Shechter Junior is all about giving opportunities to young dancers. When we started the project earlier this year it was the result of a long-held ambition to form an apprentice company. The idea was to provide opportunities for these dancers to train, work and perform both independently and alongside our company dancers and be paid for doing so, all in a professional manner to the highest quality. We wanted to provide an extremely varied experience for them to perform in all sorts of spaces, venues and countries. So, when Bradley approached us about participating in his ambitious, large scale The Four Fridas production, we jumped at the chance.
The dancers of Shechter Junior premiered in Paris in May. They will tour Europe this summer and perform alongside our company dancers at the Royal Opera House later this year. Being part of this outdoor spectacle in Woolwich for GDIF is going to be another part of that crazy ride. I’m very proud of these extraordinary dancers who have joined us from all over - UK, Norway, Israel, Denmark, France and Germany. Their intense energy and immense drive is infectious and it’s such an honour to work with them.

In recognition of Frida Kahlo’s lifelong empathy with indigenous Mexico, The Four Fridas will feature a unique and powerful preHispanic Mexican cultural tradition. For the first time ever, a group of young indigenous women from the tiny remote village of Xochiapulcho in the Sierra Puebla,
will travel to London to enact the extraordinary flight of the Voladores. In this breathtaking ceremony, a 20m wooden pole is central to an ancient, but also very much living, fertility ritual, now recognised and protected by UNESCO in its schedule of “intangible heritage”.

The Secret Princess of Severndroog
Frida Kahlo Frida Kahlo is recognised as one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century. Her work, which reflects her turbulent and colourful life, explores themes of birth, death and survival. She contracted polio in early childhood and suffered severe injuries in a traffic accident, which resulted in her regularly spending long periods in bed. Flight and the aspiration to fly is a key theme in her work and the production takes inspiration from this, recalling the quotation from her 1953 notebook, when facing possible amputation of her leg, she wrote “Feet, what need do I have of you, when I have wings to fly?”

HAVE A QUESTION? ASK A GDIF VOLUNTEER!
SUPPORT GDIF ! Keeping the Festival free is a major fundraising challenge and we’re asking you to dig deep to help us deliver another great Festival next year.
GDIF Volunteers give their time to help you get the most out of the Festival. - They will be on site at every event so look out for them in their bright yellow T-shirts! They can steer you towards the next show, set you off on one of our specially curated journeys (see pages 8 and 15) and make sure that you don’t leave the Festival without a feedback card. At some events they’ll also be inviting you to show your appreciation by giving your spare change in GDIF collection buckets.
Look out for GDIF Volunteers with collection buckets and, if you love the Festival, please give whatever you can. Or you can donate at www.justgiving.com/gdif or text GDIF15 to 70070
