Editorial Sophia Deasy, Aoibhín Dunleavy and Sophie Byrne Hello readers and a warm welcome to this year's final edition of the NCP. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone for their support and determination throughout this year. It began as a difficult year but now here we are looking forward to our first summer in two years with hopefully no lockdowns. As always, a big thank you to all our contributors who submitted amazing works for this issue throughout the year. We are so delighted to be able to share with you the brilliant works our talented students have to offer. We wouldn't be able to do any of this without the hard work of those in the school. We greatly appreciate all the support we have received this year from the Teachers and Staff of this school. Without their constant guidance and motivation, we wouldn't be where we are today. Also, a huge thanks should be given to Mr. Doyle for organising meetings and running the press. We are very thankful for his support, dedication and hard work always to the NCP and school community. This final issue has been a pleasure to put together and we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did. The best of luck to everyone sitting exams this week and to those sitting the leaving and junior certifications. We hope everyone has the best summer and enjoys the long break! A big thank you to everyone again and we will see you all next year 🙂 Your NCP Editorial Team - Aoibhín Dunleavy, Sophia Deasy and Sophie Byrne.

Congratulations to Mr. Falvey and his team who were the overall winners of “Neat Streets” – #instabin competition. You can see their winning TikTok video on the “Neat Streets” Instagram page. As we come to the end of this academic year, let’s prepare to enter next semester with a fresher, greener outlook. If we actively use the correct bins, recycle as much as we can in the blue bins conveniently located all around the school, we can make a BIG difference.

Education is at the heart of our society, and it is worthwhile exploring just how schools can embrace this positive change. The upcoming generation are drivers of change, Greta Thunberg representing a shining example of how youth participation is crucial to the future of our planet and a vital beacon of sustainability.

With all our days having been taken up with words like pandemic, Covid-19, lockdowns etc. it is refreshing to be finally able to look forward to attending events, going to concerts and getting back to living. With this in mind, we are delighted to welcome back Newbridge College’s annual musical after a brief hiatus. During October 2022, we will showcase our very own production of “Shrek The Musical.” For the very few on this planet who don’t know what Shrek is about, let me briefly explain. “Shrek The Musical” is based on the 2001 DreamWorks Animation film Shrek. The story a mean lord “Farquaad” exiles fairytale creatures to the swamp of a grumpy ogre “Shrek”, who must go on a quest with his trusty steed “Donkey” and rescue a princess “Fiona” for the lord in order to get his land back. “Shrek The Musical” will be guided to the stage under the capable tutelage of Mrs. O’Brien (musical director), Mr. G. Doyle (director) and Ms. Moran (producer). The all singing, dancing extravaganza promises to be a hilarious roller coaster ride. With auditions already under way, we cannot wait to take our seats for the

Huge Congratulations are due to two of our present sixth years. Julia Moore and Finnian King were selected to work with the OECD for the 2030 OECD Future of Education and Skills Student Voices on Curriculum Design campaign in December 2021. Julia and Finnian were two of 30 students selected and are currently representing Newbridge College on a global platform. Julia and Finnian’s contributions feature in the OECD Curriculum Flexibility and Autonomy Report. Both students have now been selected to speak at the 4th Global Forum Workshop on the OECD Future of Education and Skills 2030. This takes place in Israel at the end of the month. Only 2 students were selected globally to address the whole conference and Finnian and Julia were chosen. They will act as panelists with the OECD Director for the Directorate of Education and Skills - Andreas Schleicher. We are very proud of Julia and Finnian and what they have achieved. It is an incredible accomplishment. Congratulations to them both!

The Mirror and Its Lies By Eva Lyons-Doyle I looked into the mirror, l hated what I saw, I hated every imperfection, Hated every flaw. And so, I smashed the mirror, The shards fell to my feet, The shards that tried to trick me, With their lives and their deceit. I ran down to the kitchen, I ran to get the broom, To sweep up the deceitful shards, Now scattered round my room. Then I marvelled at the easiness, In which the mirror shattered, It serves as a reminder, Of how little its view mattered.
Interview with Joanna Lipska (Artist)
How did you get into art? Joanna first began drawing with a realistic eye art tutorial on Youtube and from there she started to make animations to post online, as her skill grew she gained a following of 6,000 people, who watched her animation improve. Her most popular video was ‘Sunlight fan animation’, which has almost 33,000 views! While Joanna no longer animates regularly she practices other art forms frequently. What inspires you to draw? Joanna gets her drawing inspiration mostly from the books she reads as she turns words into pictures. Lots of her art is inspired by the book series The Whitcher and one of her favorite authors Terry Prachett’s books, she takes the elements of fantasy to create images of wizards and mythical scenes. Aside from these imaginative subjects she says that generally she enjoys painting pretty things.
The NCP
What is your preferred medium? Joanna likes to mainly use coloured pencils, such as polychromos as well as acrylic paints. She has also ventured into other forms of art such as clay sculptures, alcohol markers and fineliners. What made you join the competition? Her art teacher.
What is the message of your piece? Joanna said that she personally doesn't believe all pieces have to have a message behind them, for her she aims to make them pretty, gruesome or just to be enjoyed. She said the piece that was shortlisted was made for the competition and that is its purpose. How would you describe your piece in 3 words? Chip Chop Chip How did you feel about getting all the way to the shortlist? She was happy to see her piece make it through but said she was sad to not be able to attend the tea party and award ceremony that is normally held, but was canceled due to covid restrictions. And when asked about the winning piece she said that she saw the artistic value in it and is still very proud of herself.. Joanna’s piece resided in The National Gallery for a while and will move to Crawford Gallery, Cork in the weeks coming. -Lucy Harkin and Daire Carey
This year Netflix brings us lots of binge worthy television (or whatever device you decide to stream from). Coming soon is the latest instalment of “Stranger Things”, the cult horror show packed with 80's nostalgia. But before we look too far ahead, let’s stay with our feet firmly in the present. Available to stream now and binge again and again is the critically acclaimed Heartstopper. Not only has this TV show garnered such a cult following it can no longer be called a cult following, it has also being nominated for a shortlist of numerous National Television Awards.
So let us start at the beginning. Heartstopper is a British coming-of-age romantic comedy streaming television series on Netflix, adapted from the webcomic and graphic novel of the same name by Alice Oseman. Written by Oseman herself, the series primarily tells the story of Charlie Spring (portrayed by Joe Locke), a gay schoolboy who falls in love with classmate Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), whom he sits next to in his new form. It also explores the lives of Tao (William Gao), Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell). Heartstopper is a show that isn’t only important for LGBTQ+ teens but for everyone. The show deals with issues of identity, bullying, homophobia, trans issues, family relationships, mental health etc. without ever getting too dark. Despite dealing with difficult issues that affect us all, Heartstopper at its heart is a show full of love, warmth and charm, a must see for everyone. The world would be better place if we had more shows like this. If you have already binged the show, why not use your summer to read the Heartstopper series of graphic novels or choose from a selection of Alice Oseman’s novels and novellas such as “Solitaire”, “Radio Silence” and “Nick and Charlie.” If you still wish to look ahead... Heartstopper has being given the green light for two more seasons.
