Practice the ‘fine art’ of shopping at Suwanee Day Story by Todd Renner, Suwanee Day Marketing Chair Shabby chic or traditional? Sudsy or edible? Beaded or twisted? A gift for mom or Fido? Whatever you’re looking for, the hundreds of unique hand-crafted items at the 2013 Suwanee Day festival are sure to tempt you. This year’s Suwanee Day planning committee had to be more selective than ever as the festival received almost twice the number of exhibitor applications as there are spaces. “We really feel that the quality of craftsmanship and creativity are going to be better than ever,” says Suwanee
Events Manager Amy Doherty, “The 2013 festival will offer a fabulous, eclectic array of everything handmade from soaps to signs and edibles to earrings. I can’t wait to shop myself!” Below are features on a few festival exhibitors, each of whom will be experiencing their first Suwanee Day. Metal pieces with personality Terry York enjoyed a successful career in retail for 20 years, culminating with a position as regional manager for Godiva Chocolatier. “I loved retail and retail loved me,” says the Tennessee native who, like so many others in
2009, found himself in need of a new career. York filled part of his time helping others by going into their homes and organizing their things. He came across many unused items in basements and attics; with a spark of creativity, he realized that the items could be reused and
given new life. For York, a new hobby, of sorts, was born. From his Marietta garage, with his dog, Sebastian, and cat, Simon, looking on, York creates whimsical face-like pieces out of recycled metallic items. He finds elements for his creations at Atlanta-area scrap yards, thrift stores, and gun shops. Door knobs for eyes, cookie sheets for faces, dryer vents for noses are just a few of the items he uses. Each unique creation has a one-of-a-kind personality and “seems to take on a life of its own,” says the artist. York actually names each piece; his favorite from over the years is “Miss Catherine.”’ When asked how he found

his way to Suwanee Day, York says: “I heard such good things about Suwanee Day from other artists that I decided I should apply.” He plans to bring 90 pieces to the festival and will take special orders as well. A quick visit to his website, JustMetalingAround.com, offers a sense of the variety of pieces he makes. Prices for York’s personable pieces range from $65 to $95. From fishing knots to fine art Not many people can claim artistic influences that include Canadian fishing nets and Celtic traditions. Rhonda Grover of Tizo Designs can. Grover’s father and brothers are fishermen, so at an early
age she learned how to tie knots in fishing nets while growing up in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, where the seeds of her handcrafted jewelry were sown. What started out as a hobby making jewelry seven years ago eventually worked Grover out of a full-time position in higher education. Grover and a friend began creating “hand-crafted art wear” together in Bloomington, Indiana. The name of their enterprise, Tizo Designs,
www.SuwaneeDay.com • Lots of ways to celebrate comes from a combination of their daughters’ names, Tierra and Sophie. After moving to Lawrenceville earlier this year, Grover continued making jewelry on her own. Beginning with a single strand of metal or silver, Grover creates contemporary wearable art, sometimes with a clear vision of how the piece will turn out and “sometimes,” says the artist, “I close my eyes and just let it happen.” Grover’s pieces can come to life in as little as 15-20 minutes or may require a day or two to complete. “I always try to have a service project that I’m working on,” says Grover. One of her recent projects was on behalf of Ally, a young Indiana girl who needed a heart trans-
plant. The family asked the artist if she could create a heart pendant that they could sell to help raise money to pay medical bills. Grover eagerly obliged and created the “Ally Heart” pendant, which through the direct selling efforts of Ally’s family and sales from Grover’s website, raised $35,000. Last Thanksgiving, Ally received her new heart, and the 11-year-old now has a bright future. Grover has a home studio where she creates her “shabby chic” art wear. “I’m committed to being reasonably priced for everyone,” she says. Her pieces at Suwanee Day will range from $22 to $70. To preview Grover’s work, including the Ally Heart pendant, visit tizo.biz.
How cool is that? Glen Haney of Suwanee had no idea that keeping drinks cool and stylish would become such a hot idea. In March, Haney’s wife saw a picture of a wood cabinet cooler and asked her handy husband if he could build one for her. He was sure he could, but little did he know how popular his stylish coolers would become and how quickly his side business would take off. Working out of his garage, he sketched and built his first cedar cooler per his wife’s request, along with her alma mater, Oklahoma State, logo on the front. It turned out so well that she wanted to give one to her best friend, also a Cowboy alumna, as a birth-
day gift. While delivering the gift, her friend’s mom asked if he could create one for her with an Atlanta Falcons logo on it. He did…and the business has taken off like a rocket ever since. Haney’s primary business, Titan Home Services, provides residential repairs so he

had all of the tools and craftsmanship necessary to start his part-time hobby. He uses cedar to create the coolers because “the natural flaws in the wood really bring out its character.” The entire process takes about two hours start to finish, although there is some wait time for the stain to dry. His portfolio has grown dramatically as people who see the units ask him if he can do this or do that for them. Father’s Day was huge for his new business, and he’s added lights and wheels to the initial design to accommodate both indoor and outdoor usage. Not only will this be Haney’s first Suwanee Day appearance, it’s his first festival entry ever. He plans to bring 10 or so completed
units to the event, but will have pictures of other designs and will be taking orders. The coolers range in price from $185 to $295. Haney’s designs can be previewed at cedarcoolercreations.com. He even offers free delivery to the Suwanee and Sugar Hill areas. Burlap meets sunshine Meg Stephens and her friend and co-worker ReBecca Eagleson are full-time hair stylists at Suwanee’s Genesis Salon – a job that they both love. Both women also love extending their artistic nature outside of the salon. Each had independently started her own art business: Stephens’ was called A Little Piece of Sunshine and Eagleson’s was A Burlap Boutique. Continued on Page 6

www.SuwaneeDay.com • Lots of ways to celebrate Continued from Page 5 When they joined forces, as a way to maximize artistry and take advantage of creative camaraderie, A Little Piece of Burlap was born. Their work can be described as custom and very rustic – “country glam,” according to one of their customers. The women buy old furniture at various thrift shops and yard sales, put it through a “distressing” process, and create new, functional pieces of art. Furniture pieces include small tables, bedside nightstands, and full-size dining room tables. Beyond furniture, they also create folksy wreathes that can be monogrammed and wallmounted wine bottle vases. Recently, one of the most popular items has been rustic-looking wedding signs that direct people to the reception. Both working women are married, but find time to spend three to four nights a week working at this venture. At Suwanee Day, Stephens and Eagleson will bring about 100 items, ranging in price from $35 to $50 for wreathes and $45 to $150 for distressed furniture. They also will entertain custom requests.
12 hours of nearly non-stop entertainment The 2013 Suwanee Day entertainment line-up features Irish dancers and belly dancers, rhythm and blues performers and cowboys and Indians, as well as a reptile man and parrot lady. A full day of on-stage entertainment begins at 10 a.m. and will conclude with a free concert by Fastball and a fireworks display. In addition to performances on the main stage, Western Trails will offer demonstrations in the children’s area throughout the day and Parrot Productions will provide roaming entertainment.

Suwanee unveils 9-11 ‘Remembrance’ display at Town Center Park The City of Suwanee unveiled earlier this week an artistic/historic display created to memorialize 9-11-2001. The display, created by Statesboro artist Marc Moulton, features a damaged, twisted relic from one of the World Trade Center towers, which was given to Suwanee a couple of years ago by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Since unveiling the artifact two years ago, the City has worked to determine a permanent location and create an appropriate display for the artifact, which was part of an
letters and numbers embedded into a cement pad. An inverted conical sculpture, with the lower Manhattan cityscape cut into it, stands in the middle of the pad. At night, a light-shadow impression, which offers an aerial view of the cityscape, is projected onto the pad. A sculpture professor at Georgia Southern University, Moulton has created public art projects for more than 20 years, but Remembrance is the first with such historical significance. “I’ve never done anything quite like this,” Moulton says. “I hope that it will provide a
exterior steel panel from floors 101-104 of one of the twin towers. Late last year, Suwanee’s Public Arts Commission solicited proposals and ultimately contracted with Moulton to create the permanent display, which is located at Town Center Park in a raised area near the brick outer wall along Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. In addition to the 1,628pound World Trade Center artifact, which stands to the side, the Remembrance display includes a 9-11 historical timeline with stainless steel
sense of respect and remembrance for the world-altering events it marks. And for those who weren’t born yet, I hope the display offers a little bit of the history of 9-11.”

Suwanee makes Money’s 2013 Best Places list our community through such a rigorous process and from such a prestigious publication,” says Suwanee Mayor Jimmy Burnette. “We’re excited to be recognized as the best small town in Georgia and committed to continually improving our community and the quality of life for our residents.” When asked on Facebook what they loved about living in Suwanee, several people, like Molly McCormick Berger, mentioned parks. Berger posted: “The friendly people who live here, the free concerts, Food Truck Friday, the Greenway, the parks....” Alicia Grdinich Cooper
posted: “Love our center of town and how it brings us together for music and festivals. The initiative to support art and artists is wonderful...” Suwanee has been included on Money’s list of Best Places to Live in previous years, ranking #10 in 2007 and #35 in 2009. Earlier this year Family Circle
magazine ranked Suwanee as one of the nation’s 10 Best Towns for Families and last year Kiplinger. com ranked Suwanee #3 on its list of best places to raise children. Other Georgia cities on Money’s 2013 Best Places list are Evans at #43 and Peachtree City at #48.

Money magazine has once again named the City of Suwanee one of America’s best places to live. Number 33 on Money’s 2013 list of best small towns, Suwanee is the highest-ranked community in Georgia. Money’s 2013 list of Best Places to Live focuses on towns with populations of 10,000-50,000. Starting with a database of more than 1,300 towns, the magazine considered median family income and home values; education and crime scores; qualityof-life factors such as health care, arts, and leisure; and intangibles like community spirit. “It’s great to receive national recognition for

12Stone has presence at Suwanee Day and growing impact in Gwinnett
EVERYBODY HAS a great time at Suwanee Day! That’s why 12Stone Church has been proud to be a festival sponsor for the past three years, according to Senior Pastor Kevin Myers. “We love being a part of Gwinnett County and the family fun that Suwanee Day delivers each year,” he says. You may have noticed the Everybodyhas.org window clings and billboards popping up all over Gwinnett and Hall counties. They’re 12Stone’s invitation to a seven-week Bible overview series that begins this month. “We’re focusing on the fact that everyone has a story and, when people listen to God’s story, they will hear their own,” says Myers. As the church opens more campuses northeast of Atlanta, 12Stone wants to spread the word that there is a right
location and right time for “Everybody.” With campuses currently in Lawrenceville, Hamilton Mill, Flowery Branch, and Sugarloaf, 12Stone Church serves close to 15,000 people each weekend. “Our Sugarloaf Campus currently meets at Peachtree Ridge High School, which has been a valuable partnership for us as we have been building our new campus,” says Sugarloaf Campus Pastor Scott Mawdesley. “We look forward to opening up more seats for guests and continuing to be a force for good in the Duluth/Suwanee area when we open our permanent campus in January.” Construction for this new campus can be seen as you travel the I-85 corridor across from Sugarloaf Mills. The building will house 12Stone’s Sugarloaf Campus with a 1,000-seat worship center; the John C. Maxwell Leadership
Center; and offices for Equip, a nonprofit international training organization founded by Dr. Maxwell. “Having a leadership training center attached to a church gives us the perfect setting to train leaders in ministry. It’s the same premise as a teaching hospital for residents,” explains Mawdesley. 12Stone also is in the process of expanding in the Hamilton Mill area. New construction on an 800-seat worship center on 11 acres of land adjacent to Duncan Creek Park is expected to begin in the spring. 12Stone Church’s presence in the community expands beyond its buildings. In addition to supporting several local compassion partners like Rainbow Village, Hope Clinic, Salvation Army, and local food cooperatives, 12Stone has partnered with local schools, food dis-
tributors, and the Gwinnett Braves to For locations, service times, and provide meals for thousands of families general information regarding 12Stone’s at Christmastime. vision, mission, and ministries, please “Our goal is to give ourselves away to visit 12stone.com. our community,” says Myers. “Working with local partners allows us to give more and to leverage the great systems our partners have in place.” 12Stone Church recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Named as the fastest growing church in the United States by Outreach Magazine in 2010, 12Stone exists to inspire life, share life, and give life because Jesus said: “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” John 10:10

Treat yourself to frightfully fun, spooky events
The City of Suwanee will offer fun thrills and spooky chills through its annual Halloween events. Youngsters are invited to dress in costumes and come enjoy festival games, inflatables, dance competitions, and pictures with Parker at the City’s Trek or Treat event from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, October 26, at Suwanee Creek Park. A free hot dog lunch will
be available while supplies last. This event is free and open to the public. Across town, frightful storytellers will return to Sims Lake Park when the Aurora Theatre brings Terror on the Trail to Suwanee on Friday and Saturday evenings during the last three weekends of October. Teenage zombies have charged six captive souls with dispensing tales of terror as listeners warily make their way around the park’s seven-acre lake. The Terror on the Trail website warns: “It is the season of horror and, if you dare to hear these tales, a living nightmare awaits you. Not in some cozy haunted house, but in the dark, in the woods, around a lake.” The zombies take over the
normally idyllic Sims Lake Park beginning at 7 each evening. The haunted tours last about 75 minutes. More information and tickets are available at scarystroll.com/ tot.html.

2013-15 SculpTour provides artistic take on nature, family, human body & more
Arranged as a walkable art encounter, the 2013-15 Suwanee SculpTour pieces offer artistic interpretations and reflections on a broad range of topics, from nature to the human body, from love of family to an appreciation for well-worn tools. The SculpTour exhibit is arranged as a walking tour
through and around Town Center Park. The exhibit will remain on display through March 2015. Suwanee SculpTour is part of the City’s public arts initiative. The program is coordinated by the Public Arts Commission and funded through private donations. The artists in the exhibit hail from seven different states. Several
are from Georgia with the remainder coming from Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, and Tennessee. New York City sculptor Jack Howard-Potter’s red Dancer 10, which can be seen on the edge of Town Center Park along Buford Highway, seeks to convey the motion of the body in extremely stressful and beautiful positions. In Blue Trees and Sky, Cathrin Hoskin combines ideas about the body’s landscape of veins and nerves with similar linear patterns found in nature. Human bodies aren’t the only life forms represented in this SculpTour. Two pieces, Who Let the Dogs Out? By Jim Collins and Giraffe by Jonathan Bowling, represent animals. Motion is another common theme among some of the sculptures. In Crescendo, Gregory John-

son examines how Mother Nature in motion – be it in the form of a crashing wave, a rolling cloud, or an avalanche of snow – suggests meandering circular movements. A kinetic sculpture, Phil Proctor’s Iron Canopy actually rotates as it’s blown by the wind. The 17-foot piece recognizes that life supports life – in this case, the tree is a habitat for a great owl. Relationships – be it the relationship of a couple or the connection between fine art and American subcultures such as hot-rodding or that between a musicianfather and his child – also are pondered by SculpTour artists. “Whether people see one or two pieces at a time as they visit Town Center or see all of them at once as they take the approximately one-mile walking tour,” says Economic and Community Development Director Denise
Brinson, “we hope that the accessibility of public art in Suwanee will make folks pause, reflect, connect, and maybe smile.” Pieces included in the 2013-15 SculpTour exhibit are: • Aplomb – Luke Achterberg, Lexington, Kentucky • Blue Trees and Sky – Cathrin Hoskinson, Brooklyn • Crescendo – Gregory Johnson, Cumming, Georgia • Crossing V – Christopher Newman, Chicago • Dancer 10 – Jack HowardPotter, New York City • Fay – Cecilia Lueza, St.Petersburg, Florida • Giraffe – Jonathan Bowling, Greenville, North Carolina • Iron Canopy – Phil Proctor, Atlanta • Music from My Father – Fred Ajanogha, College Park, Georgia
• Pick – Andrew T. Crawford, Atlanta • Reflection – Michael Russell, Athens, Tennessee • Ring Bound – Davis A. Whitfield IV, Mountain City, Tennessee • Vertigo – Robert Cordisco, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida • Who Let the Dogs Out? – Jim Collins, Signal Mountain, Tennessee More information about the 2013-15 SculpTour is available at www.suwanee.com/whatsnew. sculptour. Website visitors also may vote for their favorite current sculpture. At the end of each exhibit, provided funding allows, the Public Arts Commission purchases at least one sculpture to be added to Suwanee’s permanent public art collection; unique daily votes are among the factors considered in making the decision of which piece to purchase.
