Karen Kelly needs just three seconds to determine the effectiveness of any exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Atlanta. “That’s how long it takes to see if it can keep kids engaged, which means it’s working,” the museum’s director of exhibits and education said. “We don’t want kids to just give it a quick look and move on. We want the exhibits to be interactive and very hands-on.” Kelly said she anticipates the museum’s most recent feature, “Sid the Science Kid: The Super-Duper Exhibit!” to grab children’s attention and not let go as they become immersed in the traveling exhibit based on the PBS Kids TV show. The exhibit, which is geared toward children who are in third grade or younger, gives visitors the opportunity to step into Sid’s enormous house and become “Science Kids.” Children will be taught the principles of science in a very interactive and fun way, as the exhibit takes what’s generally taught in school and applies it to everyday life. “This isn’t an exhibit where you’ll watch something on a screen and that will be it,” she said. “Children will have things to do throughout the exhibit and come away feeling life they’ve made something happen and accomplished something — and they’ll have a lot of fun while they’re learning.” Kids will use all five of their senses as they wander through Sid’s home, his school’s

website for exact times. Children’s Museum of Atlanta — the only educational venue of its kind in Atlanta — features educational programs and exhibits designed for young children up to age 9. Its mission is to spark imagination and inspire discovery and learning for all children through the power of play. The venue’s six permanent learning zones and complementary exhibits promote literacy, math and science through playbased exploration. “Knowing that ‘Sid the Science Kid’ is a popular television program among our visitors was one of the main reasons we wanted to bring this exhibit to Atlanta,” said Jane Turner, executive director of the Children’s Museum of Atlanta. “This interactive exhibit will allow children to engage in the power of play through entering Sid’s world like never before and immersing themselves into various elements of science.”

She’s a Puritan and speaks with an accent that has Scottish, British and Irish. I’ve never had to speak with that type of accent before and it’s hard for me as a Latino to pull off a European accent.” Rodriguez plays Abigail Williams, who is seeking forgiveness after her accusations during the Salem witch trials led to 19 lynching in Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible.” “Abigail/1702” takes place 10 years after the killings, as Abigail is seeking forgiveness and has moved to Boston. But she’s still haunted by her past as she tries to tries to return to normalcy in mainstream society. Abigail is remorseful for her role in the convictions after her claims, which may have been untrue, led to the accused paying the ultimate price for crimes they may not have committed. She has changed her name and is dedicated to helping instead of condemning. She keeps her identity hidden in her new city, where she hopes her work running a home that treats the sick will lead to forgiveness and salvation. “It’s very much a morality tale of where she is and

ANCIENT WARRIORS

Exhibit turns Fernbank into the Colosseum BY JON GALLO

Staff Correspondent

While it has been centuries since they dueled to brutal deaths, gladiators continue to remain very much alive today. Whether it has been through Russell Crowe’s “Gladiator,” Kiefer Sutherland’s “Pompeii” or the Starz series “Spartacus,” gladiators continue to draw an audience today, just as they did thousands of years ago when their fights to the death were the hottest ticket in town. Now, the sword-wielding, armor-clad warriors are coming to Atlanta as “Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum” will turn the Fernbank Museum of Natural History into the Eighth Wonder of the World from Sept. 30 through Jan. 7. “People have always drawn to them,” said Kayla Rumpfeldt, the museum’s public relations coordinator. “There is a cool cultural element behind them. They had personas and followings like professional wrestlers and they had fans like football teams have today — all to see these guys have a courageous fight to the death.” By displaying armor, helmets, weapons and archeological artwork that have been loaned from Italy, “Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum” will give visitors an up close and behind-the-scenes look at the men and women who fought for their lives and their city’s reputation. “We have real pieces of the Colosseum and how many of us can just go visit Italy and go to Rome and get a tour of the Colosseum?” Rumpfeldt said. “We have mosaic
