Downtown Duluth
One Year Later by Chris McGahee
Last Fall Festival, Downtown Duluth was in the midst of construction. This year is no different, although a great deal of visible progress has been made. Parsons Alley is built, and now tenants are working hard to place their businesses in some of the new buildings, as well as the buildings that were saved. Maple Street Biscuit hopes to have the old City Hall and Baptist Church building open and serving their famous biscuits by the time of Fall Festival. Noona Steak and Oysters and Good Word Brew Pub and Public House are also working hard to be open. Personify and Simply Done Donuts are already open and, of course, Dreamland BBQ is as good as ever. New to the historic side of Main Street is the Downtown Sandwich Shoppe. Main Street is also the site of yet another new retail
building; this one filling in the hole between Pure Taqueria and Red Clay Music Foundry. Last year Proctor Square was red clay as land was cleared to prepare for the District at Duluth residential and retail mixed-use project. The first residential units will be ready to occupy the first day of Fall Festival. Old parking spots behind City Hall have new homes rising out of what was once industrial land. With all the change, Duluth remains true to its heritage, keeping its timeless buildings while constructing new ones with an understanding of the past that built it. As always enjoy Fall Festival, a Duluth tradition! We invite you and your family to experience the first of fall amongst the oldest and newest buildings in Duluth. Visit your favorite shops and try the new ones!
We care for Duluth. Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth traces its roots to a single community hospital. And while we’re known for our legacy of care and compassion, today, we’re one of the leading hospitals in Atlanta. From our groundbreaking Concussion Institute to our innovative use of robotic surgery, we’re pushing the boundaries of technology and setting the pace of health care in north Atlanta and throughout the state. Because progress never stops, and neither do we. This is Gwinnett Medical Center. This is now. GMC-Duluth is located on Howell Ferry Road between Pleasant Hill Road and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

35th Annual
Welcome to the 35th Duluth Fall Festival It is our privilege as Co-Chairs to welcome you to the 2017 Award-Winning Duluth Fall Festival. Our adopted home has made us both welcome, in large measure because of our involvement with the Festival. For those wanting to be involved in our community there is no better way than to join the almost 400 volunteers that make this event happen. For all who have volunteered their time, talents, and energy over the years, we salute you! To the City of Duluth staff that contributes mightily to the Festival’s success, and to our wonderful sponsors, we can’t say “Thank you” enough! To the folks who attend our Festival, we thank you also, and look forward to seeing you here. We have one huge request - PLEASE UTILIZE OUR air-conditioned MOTOR COACHES! The pickup lots are located at Mason Elementary, Chattahoochee Elementary, and Duluth Middle School. The purpose of the Festival is to promote the general welfare and beautification of Downtown Duluth and to unite the citizens to work together for the common good. Over the years, the Festival has been responsible for more improvements in Downtown Duluth than we can possibly list, and has certainly fulfilled its purpose. Duluth is a special place and a unique community that we are both proud to call home. Annette McIntosh and K.J. “Kelly” Kelkenberg 2017 Co-Chairpersons Duluth Fall Festival
About the Cover Sunshine, our mascot, embodies the spirit and excitement of the Duluth Fall Festival. Sunshine is portrayed by Jean Harrivel, a Festival volunteer since 2005. Although she seems like a tiny Southern Belle, Jean grew up in Michigan, moving to Georgia in 1988. She leads the Sunshine Committee recognizing volunteer events, such as birthdays, etc. Jean is a staff member at Perimeter Church, and volunteers in numerous civic groups. She feels volunteering is important because you get to know more people, you make things better, and you gain so much more than you give. 2017

PaRadE At 10 a.m. Saturday morning, the largest parade in Gwinnett County (with about 3,000 participants) kicks off the Duluth Fall Festival. Come early to get a good spot, and be sure to bring a bag to catch candy thrown along the route! The Parade starts on Main Street (near Coleman Middle School), continues to Highway 120, turns south on Buford Highway and ends at BB&T Bank. Once you are settled, get ready to celebrate the wonderful people, schools, organizations, and businesses that make Duluth everyone’s perfect hometown. The Parade includes classic cars, award-winning marching bands and orchestras, martial arts groups, scouts, Santa Claus, and much more!

Grand Marshal: Georgia Swarm Grand Marshal of the Parade is the World Champion Georgia Swarm Lacrosse team. The Swarm brought Georgia its first professional sporting championship in nearly 22 years. Honorary Grand Marshal of the Parade is Rev. Nancy Yancey, Chief Executive Officer of Rainbow Village, Duluth. Rainbow Village is a nonprofit that transforms the lives of homeless families, having broken the cycle of homelessness, poverty and domestic violence for more than 1200 people. Rainbow Village transitions 30 families at-a-time from being homeless to living in beautiful apartments. While living on
campus, the families work toward their goal of living independently. Their children are wrapped in love by mentors who sharpen both their educational skills and moral-compasses. Five years after moving on from Rainbow Village, more than 85 percent of families who complete this program remain self-sufficient. Much of the success of Rainbow Village is due to Nancy Yancey. She has shown unwavering dedication and commitment since the very beginning. Nancy has led the organization from its early days operating a single duplex, through the recent completion of the $8.8 million, seven-building campus. Duluth Fall Festival is honoring Nancy for all that she has done for these families, and also for bringing her wonderful program here to Downtown Duluth. Nancy is retiring at the end of this year and will certainly be missed. However, she has left such a well-run organization, we are confident that her leadership will live on. You can learn more about this remarkable, life-restoring program at www.rainbowvillage.org.

A Partnership:
duluth Fall Festival and the City of duluth The 35th Annual Duluth Fall Festival (DFF) is another chapter in a long and impressive story about volunteerism and partnership. For more than 30 years, the Festival has worked tirelessly to raise money for projects in downtown Duluth. As we work to make our historic downtown Duluth a destination for locals and visitors, we realize the strong and significant impact the Festival has had on this quest. The City of Duluth is on a mission to bring amenities and services that are attractive to young professionals. By making downtown Duluth a destination, we are building a culture of
sustainability—future leaders for our city as well as economic vibrancy for downtown merchants. A city that invests in its infrastructure is the best way to attract new businesses and industry to the community. A strong downtown is the heartbeat of a city, and its success trickles across the city limits like a pebble thrown in a pond. A city that invests in its own infrastructure is the best way to attract new businesses and industry to the community. Because the mission of the Festival is to give back to downtown improvements, the City of Duluth has been able to implement

unique and attractive amenities that are enjoyed by all ages. Some of the projects that the DFF has funded include The Duluth Festival Center and Stage, parking lots, Parson’s Alley plaza amenities (such as the boardwalk and signage), Red Clay Music Foundry signage, equipment for Public Works, and much more. The partnership between the Duluth Fall Festival and the City of Duluth works because it is collaborative. The DFF Executive Committee listens to the City’s needs and helps us complete projects that have laid the foundation for a destination downtown.
As I speak across the state, many people are surprised to learn that the Festival is comprised of more than 400 volunteers and is operated in conjunction with the City. The Festival has become one of the premier festivals in the southeast and we are very proud of its success. Our partnership has made a significant difference in downtown Duluth because we share the same vision for our city. Thank you, Duluth Fall Festival! Nancy Harris Mayor of Duluth

n the early years, any vendor who applied to the Duluth Fall Festival was accepted, including commercial businesses. As applications for arts and crafts vendors increased, commercial applications were rejected. Then, in 1997, a volunteer suggested that we allow a few commercial booths, but at higher fees—thus, our Sponsor program was born. Since then, levels of sponsorship have been developed. Starting at $250, each level, up to $10,000, has increased perks. The total amount donated by the 160+ sponsors averages about $160,000 per Festival. All Festival proceeds go toward the beautification and improvement of Downtown Duluth. During its 35 years, the Festival has donated more than $2.5 million dollars to the City for this purpose. We appreciate and say “Thank You” to all of our sponsors, who were instrumental in making this possible.

THE DREAMKEEPERS
HISTORIC DULUTH MOSAIC The beautiful new “Historic Duluth” mosaic in Parsons Alley was created by local artist Jennifer Freeman and commissioned by Duluth Fall Festival. Her concentration is in large-scale mosaics and the public art sector. Jennifer has won numerous awards, and has her work dis-
fine-art shows. She and her husband, Dr. Scott Henderson, have lived in Chicago and Minneapolis, as well as Atlanta, and have three children. Three years ago, the couple moved into one of the historic houses in Downtown Duluth and they now say that Duluth is really home!
played in many surrounding cities. Jennifer began her career in the business world, and, for 20 years, owned a successful travel agency. She began working in mosaics using broken china. In 2004, she studied classical mosaics in Italy and exhibited in
In 2017, Downtown Duluth acquired another sculpture in its public art collection when “The Dream Keepers,” by Duluth artist and Festival v o l u nt e e r , Kathy Andrews Fincher, was installed on the Town Green. It is one of the largest public artworks of children in the United States. Kathy’s original painting of “The Dream Keepers,” a message of hope following the events of 9/11, is part of President George
W. Bush’s permanent art collection. The children in the artwork were translated into life-sized bronze figures by renowned sculptor, Martin Dawe.
Setting the stage for this amazing display, the Festival Committee funded the antique brick-columned wall that encases a glass American flag.

As always, we will be broadcasting college football games under the tent, so don’t worry about missing your favorite team.
With more than 50 food booths, you are certain to find many treats to please your palate. You’ll find a wide variety of food, including pierogis, gyros, fried ‘gator and BBQ. The Fall Festival’s own concession stand features hotdogs and our famous “Big Pickles.”
On Saturday morning, Walter Reeves, the Georgia Gardener, will answer your gardening questions in person between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. See you in Man's Corner at the Duluth Fall Festival!

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL T-SHIRT AND CONCERT Each year, the Festival T-shirt color is a surprise. Due to the T-shirtʼs popularity, many volunteers and sponsors alike join the Festival ranks just to get a shirt. This yearʼs shirt was unveiled at the Festival Concert on September 23rd that featured Departure, a Journey Tribute Band. For the first few years, Tom Martin, then of Citizenʼs Bank, donated all of the volunteer T-shirts.
